Abstract:Permanent magnet spherical actuators (PMSAs) become a hot research topic due to their characteristic of realizing multidegree-of-freedom rotation within a single joint. The magnet pattern, as the core component in the PMSA, has a significant influence on the spherical actuator performance. In this article, a novel unidirectional alternating magnet topology (UAMT) is proposed for spherical actuators. Different from the conventional magnet patterns, the UAMT adequately utilizes the rotor space and presents identical polarity along the longitude direction while alternating polarity along the latitude direction. Consequently, the UAMT can offer several advantages. First, it can provide a large magnetomotive force to the spherical actuator. Second, it helps to reduce the magnetic reluctance of the spherical actuator. Third, it can decrease the interpole flux leakage. These advantages can increase the magnetic flux density, which helps to improve the performance of the spherical actuator. The structure diagram and the working principle of the proposed spherical actuator with UAMT are presented. In addition, analytical models of the 3-D magnetic field generated by the UAMT are derived. Then, the numerical computations are carried out to validate the magnetic field analytical models. Furthermore, the magnetic flux density generated by the proposed UAMT is compared with that of the conventional magnet pattern. A research prototype of the proposed UAMT and the experimental platform are developed. Measurement experiments on the triaxial components of the magnetic flux density along the rotor spherical surface are conducted. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed UAMT effectively reduces the magnetic reluctance and the interpole flux leakage, and enhances the magnetic flux density of the spherical actuator.
