Abstract:The papers in this special section focus on emerging computational intelligent techniques for decision making with Big Data in uncertain environments. Decision making in a big-data environment poses many challenges because of the high dimensional, heterogeneous, complex, unstructured, and unpredictable characteristics of the data which often suffer from different kinds of uncertainty. The uncertainty in the data may arise due to many factors including missing values, imprecise measurements, changes in process characteristics during the data generation period, lack of appropriate monitoring of data measurement process to name a few. Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems usually generate a large amount of unstructured and heterogeneous data demanding specialized techniques for data analytics. Thus, decision making in such an environment poses significant challenges and often demands new and innovative design techniques and algorithms for decision making.

Abstract:The articles in this special section focus on computational intelligence for big social data analytics. In the eras of social connectedness and social colonization, people are becoming increasingly enthusiastic about interacting, sharing, and collaborating through online collaborative media. In recent years, this collective intelligence has spread to many different areas, with particular focus on fields related to everyday life such as commerce, tourism, education, and health, causing the size of the Social Web to expand exponentially. The distillation of knowledge from such a large amount of unstructured information, however, is an extremely difficult task, as the contents of today's Web are perfectly suitable for human consumption, but remain hardly understandable to machines. Big social data analysis grows out of this need and combines multiple disciplines such as social network analysis, multimedia management, social media analytics, trend discovery, and opinion mining.

Abstract:The papers in this special issue provide a highly exciting opportunity to explore the interdisciplinary nature of the management of Internet of Things (IoT) and big data analytics. Both IoT and big data keep making headlines everywhere, drawing a large amount of research interest, a fast expanding universe of applications, and highlighting unprecedented challenges. On one hand, the IoT has been generating widespread research interest across a variety of technical areas, including the sensor network management, data communication, temporal and spatial data analysis, and visualization. On the other hand, big data are providing innovative solutions addressing the challenges posed by data volume, velocity, variety, and veracity, known as the 4Vs. Instead of being overwhelmed by these issues, researchers and scholars are making significant progress in generating value out of big data. One such effort is to exploit the synergies between IoT and big data, so that both have increased impact. This issue is designed to present innovative ideas and emerging solutions in this new interdisciplinary area.

Abstract:Internet of Things (IoT) is increasingly common in our society and daily life, with applications ranging from personal devices (e.g., wearable devices such as Google Smartwatches) to smart home (e.g., smart TVs and Amazon Echo) to smart city/grid (e.g., unmanned aerial and/or ground vehicles), as well as in battlefield settings (e.g., Internet of Battlefield / Military Things). One corresponding trend associated with the increase in IoT devices, in terms of both number and diversity, is a significant increase in the volume, velocity, variety, variability, and value of the generated and resultant data (i.e., 5Vs of big data).

Abstract:The rapid development of real-time Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) applications including green infrastructure, smart grids, smart city, intelligent transport networks, etc. enables green communication between tens of billions of end devices such as wearable devices and sensors. As a result, a tremendous amount of data is generated from massively distributed sources, which require computational intelligence techniques to fulfill high computing and communication demand that frequently exceeds energy consumption. Many emerging IIoT applications including remote surgery, machine monitoring and control, fault detection, and healthcare generate delay-sensitive tasks, which require timely processing with minimum delay. Besides, according to the energy consumption formulation, the required energy consumption for processing real-time tasks on remote computing devices should be the accumulation of data transmission time, transmission power, and processing capacity. Thereby, the energy emission rate can be controlled by balancing the trade-off between the transmission power and transmission time. IIoT covers a broad domain of real-time IIoT applications and refers to the combination of IoT technologies and computational intelligence techniques for processing real-time data with minimum delay. In addition, energy-efficient communication and computation of the real-time IIoT applications target to increase efficiency, automation, and productivity.

Abstract:With growing attention from both academia and industry, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), comprised of a multitude of connected devices, is supposed to monitor, collect, exchange, analyze, and instantly act on information to intelligently change the industrial device’s behavior or the industrial environment (e.g., autonomous reaction to unexpected changes in production by effectively detecting failures and triggering maintenance processes). Toward this goal, the convergence of sensor networks, cloud computing, and big data in IIoT is recently identified as an essential component. Specifically, to capture various data in IIoT, sensor networks are deployed. Meanwhile, to store and process data powerfully in IIoT, cloud computing platforms are developed. Moreover, to glean valuable findings from the massive data in IIoT, big data analytics tools are utilized. However, to integrate sensor networks, cloud computing, and big data in IIoT in a robust way, there are a lot of tough issues to be solved with respect to various aspects (e.g., framework, greenness, security, quality of service, etc.).

Abstract:To react to the drastic developments in Big Data, the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (IEEE CIS) has taken several measures, including setting up the First IEEE Symposium on Computational Intelligence in Big Data, which is going to be held within the SSCI 2014 in December 2014 in Florida, USA, and revising the name of the Technical Committee on Data Mining to expand its scope to cover Big Data Analytics. This special issue of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine is one in a series of reactions of the IEEE CIS to the boom in Big Data Analytics research that aims to publish selected research articles presenting most recent advances and discussing challenges and opportunities in the application of CI techniques to Big Data. After a peer-review procedure, two papers have been selected from 12 manuscripts submitted to the Special Issue to be present in this Special Issue, representing the highest quality work on CI techniques in understanding Big Data challenges. Both papers are briefly summarized. Both papers are of review nature discussing the opportunities and promises of CI techniques along with challenges. They have raised more questions than answers, which is actually the aim of this Special Issue to trigger a wider range of interests in the CI community.

It has been widely recognized that our daily lives will be fundamentally improved with various IoT applications in environmental surveillance, healthcare, agriculture, public security, supply chain management, etc. Building on these successes and recent advances in information and communication technologies, IoT will develop toward largescale and ubiquitous directions, imposing increasingly higher requirements on safety, reliability, security, energy efficiency, performance, robustness, and cost efficiency. This introduces many unprecedented challenging issues across the disciplines of embedded system, manufacturing, telecommunication, computing, sensing, software engineering, data management, and analysis. Abstract:Nowadays, a new intelligence structure known as the Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) comes into play. Broadly speaking, AIoT is a fusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) in practical applications. It applies AI to the edge and gives devices the ability to understand the data, observe the environment around them, and decide what to do best. However, the link among cloud, edge, blockchain, 5G, and AI poses many challenges that call for collaborative approaches and rethinking of the entire architecture, communication, and processing to meet requirements in latency, reliability, and so on. Abstract:In the 6G era, with the hyper-connectivity among humans and everything, we are anticipating Internet of Things (IoT) applications in various fields, including smart city, smart factory, smart home, smart grid, e-health, and smart transportation, accompanied by new services with rich experiences, such as truly immersive VR/AR/MR (XR), high-fidelity mobile hologram, and digital twins. However, in order to facilitate these emerging IoT applications, we have to investigate the collaboration among different network entities to achieve joint optimization under heterogeneous communication, caching, and computing resources. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) based approaches have been attracting great interest in empowering computer systems. Since the centralized learning approaches face many challenges in terms of scalability, some collaborative learning approaches, such as federated learning and multi-agent systems, have been investigated recently to reduce networking overhead and improve learning efficiency. Based on refined AI technologies, collaborative intelligence can achieve better decisions by aggregating knowledge and enabling efficient coordination among multiple agents with a light communication overhead. It is envisioned that the collaborative intelligence is the enabler for collaborative IoT systems.

Abstract:The pervasive nature of big data technologies as witnessed in industry services and everyday life has given rise to an emergent, data-focused economy stemming from many aspects of industrial applications. The richness and vastness of these services are creating unprecedented research opportunities in a number of industrial fields including public health, urban studies, economics, finance, social science, and geography. We are moving towards the era of Big Data Services, which are deployed in a multi-scale complex distributed architecture. These services can be formed a high-level computational intelligence based on emerging analytical techniques such as big data analytics and web analytics. In this context, computational intelligence employs software tools from advanced analytics disciplines such as data mining, predictive analytics, and machine learning. At the same time, it becomes increasingly important to anticipate technical and practical challenges and to identify best practices learned through experience. Abstract:AI/machine learning has demonstrated significant success in transforming massive and complex data sets into highly accurate knowledge as outcomes, greatly facilitating analysis, intelligence, decision making, and automation across a number of diverse systems. Through integration with advances in data processing, computing, and networking technologies, AI/machine learning is capable of providing a viable means for carrying out big modeling and intelligence and has achieved significant success in a number of fields. However, in order to achieve an AI-enabled Internet of Dependable and Controllable Things, AI/machine learning in Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems must overcome significant challenges and exceptional requirements for connectivity, latency, scalability, accessibility, security, and resiliency that IoT systems pose. Thus, the seamless integration of AI/machine learning into IoT systems creates tremendous opportunities for new research and necessitates interdisciplinary efforts to address these challenges.
