Abstract:Understanding the mechanism of trophic transfer of heavy metal through the aquatic food web is critical to ecological exposure risk assessments in mangrove ecosystems. Zhanjiang Mangrove National Nature Reserve (ZMNNR) is the largest and biologically richest mangrove reserve in China, but has been exposed to heavy metal pollutants caused by the progressive industrialization and urbanization. We collected a variety of aquatic consumers, and primary producers, as well as sediments from the ZMNNR and analyzed them for heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) concentrations, and for both δ13C and δ15N values to establish the trophic levels. The trophic magnification factors (TMF) of Cd, Cu and Zn are 0.19 (p < 0.01), 0.07 (p < 0.01) and 0.33 (p < 0.05), respectively, indicating significant biodilution in a simplified food web composed of bivalves, crustaceans and fish. There are also potential tendencies of biodilution for Cr, Ni and Pb. Comparison of heavy metals in representative fish and shrimp in the ZMNNR with those in worldwide mangroves indicate a low risk level for aquatic consumers in our ecosystem. Quantitative source tracking is conducted based on principal component analysis and cluster analysis, which indicate that Cr, Ni and Pb are mainly originated from natural geological processes, Cu and Zn from shrimp farming and agriculture activities, and Cd from the deposition of aerosol released by regional metal smelting industry.
Trophic transfer of TiO2 nanoparticles from daphnia to zebrafish in a simplified freshwater food chain

Abstract:The rapid development of nanotechnology and the corresponding increase in the use of manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs) in commercial products have led to concerns about the health risks and environmental impacts of such nanosized materials. One of the most significant and currently not well-understood risks is their potential transfer and magnification in food webs. To address this concern, a simplified model of a freshwater food chain including a low trophic level organism (daphnia, Daphnia magna) and a high trophic level organism (zebrafish, Danio rerio) was established. Our results provide the first direct evidence that nanoscale TiO2 particles (nTiO2) can transfer from D. magna to D. rerio by dietary exposure. However, no biomagnifications of nTiO2 was observed in this simplified food chain because the values of the biomagnification factors (BMF) in this study (0.024 and 0.009) were all less than one. Compared to the dietary intake, D. rerio could accumulate nTiO2 by aqueous exposure with high bioaccumulation factors (BCFs) of 25.38 and 181.38 for 0.1 and 1.0mgL−1 exposure groups, respectively. Nevertheless, higher body burden of nTiO2 in the dietary exposure groups than that in the aqueous exposure groups demonstrated that dietary intake may constitute a major route of potential nanomaterial exposure for a higher trophic level of aquatic organisms. This study represents the first examination of the potential food chain transfer and biomagnification of nTiO2 in an aquatic ecosystem.
Spatial distribution, temporal variations and source of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in Taihu Lake, China

Abstract:The detrimental impacts of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) on the ecosystem and organisms have aroused great public concerns. However, the information on their concentration in the real aquatic environment is still limited, hindering the rational evaluation of their potential hazards. In this study, water samples from Taihu Lake were collected in June and November 2023, to investigate the spatial distribution and temporal variations of TiO2NPs. Using phosphorylated Fe3O4 particles based magnetic solid phase extraction and ICP-MS determination, high concentrations of TiO2NPs were detected in the western and northern regions of Taihu Lake. These areas contribute to 83 % of the total runoff into the lake. Total Ti levels were typically higher in November than in June, but no marked seasonal difference was observed for TiO2NPs. Different shapes of TiO2NPs with both smooth and rough surfaces were observed in the surface water. To further distinguish whether these TiO2NPs were sourced from the natural background or anthropogenic sources, the ratios of Ti to other rare elements including Nb were calculated. In November, the Ti/Nb ratios at most sampling sites were significantly higher than those in June, indicating that a large amount of engineered TiO2NPs are discharged into Taihu Lake during the summer and autumn seasons. Our study contributes to the understanding of contamination levels, spatial distribution, and temporal variation of TiO2NPs in lake systems, and provides valuable data for their further risk assessment.
Fate of TiO 2 Nanoparticles Entering Sewage Treatment Plants and Bioaccumulation in Fi Sh in the Receiving Streams

Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can be important point sources for the discharge of engineered nanomaterials to natural surface waters. In this study, we investigated the fate of nano-TiO2 in two full scale WWTPs and their receiving streams in northern China (i.e., the Binhe and Minxin rivers, which flow to the Xiaohe River). High resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses indicated that Ti in colloids present in the WWTP effluents and receiving streams originated mainly from engineered nano-TiO2. Most of the nano-TiO2 (74–85%) in the influent sewage was removed by the activated sludge, but significant concentrations (27–43μg/L Ti) remained associated with colloids in the effluents. Surprisingly, the total concentration of Ti in the receiving river streams was higher (52–86μg/L), indicating the importance of other sources such as urban runoff. These relatively high Ti concentrations are unlikely to originate from natural sources since they are significantly higher than those in the nearby Yuqiao Reservoir (<5μg/L), representing regional background levels. Consistently, Ti levels in fish collected from the Xiaohe River (including muscle and other tissues) were significantly higher than those of fish from the reservoir. Overall, TiO2 releases through WWTP effluents and other sources (including runoff) are contributing to the relatively high observed concentrations of suspended Ti in the Xiaohe River, which results in accumulation in edible fish tissue.

Abstract:The increasing production of nano-TiO 2 has attracted extensive concerns about the ecological consequence and health risk of these compounds in natural ecosystem. However, little is known about its toxicity on zooplankton, especially its possibility to access to the food chain via dietary exposure. To address this concern, the toxic and cumulative effects of nano-TiO 2 on an aquatic food chain were explored through two trophic levels independently or jointly including producer and consumer. The results revealed that exposure to suspensions of nanomaterials had negative effects on both producers and consumers. Specifically, nanoparticles reduced the density of algal cells in a concentration-dependent way, and hatching life expectancy, average lifespan, net reproductive rate, and population intrinsic growth rate of rotifers decreased significantly with the concentration of nanomaterials increased ( P 1. Exposure concentration, exposure time and their interactions play a strong part in the accumulation of nanoparticles in algae and rotifers. Overall, the present findings confirmed that nano-TiO 2 was deleterious to plankton, posing a significant environmental threat to aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:The occurrence of titanium dioxide nanoparticle (TNP), an emerging contaminant, in Taihu Lake of China was investigated. Ti was present at a concentration of 224 ± 59 μg/L in the water samples collected from a water source in east Taihu Lake. Approximately 0.19% of the Ti-containing matter was at the nano-scale. Scanning Electron Microscope analysis verified the existence of Ti-containing components, such as TiOx and FeTiOx. Furthermore, Ti K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy was used to detect the phase composition of nano-scaled Ti-containing matter. The spectra showed the three characteristic peaks of TiO2 in the samples, suggesting the occurrence of TNP in Taihu Lake. A least-squares linear combination fitting analysis indicated that the TNP concentration in the water source was ~0.77 μg/L in water and ~0.85 μg/g-dry in sediment. The removal performance of the TNP at a full-scale conventional drinking water treatment plant indicated that ~61% of TNP was removed via coagulation/sediment, sand filtration, and disinfection/clear water reservoir. The coagulation/sediment process accounted for approximately 70% of the total removed TNP. The finished water contained ~ 0.30 μg/L TNP. This study is the first that reported the presence and transport of TNP in a full-scale drinking water treatment system.

Trophic transfer potential of nTiO2, nZnO, and triclosan in an algae-algae eating fish food chain

Abstract:Little is known about the trophic transfer of nanoparticles and personal care products via dietary exposure in an algae-algae eating fish food chain. The bioaccumulation of nano-TiO2 (P25 - nTiO2), nano-ZnO (nZnO), and triclosan (TCS) in eight different combinations were explored in this study through algae, Asterococcus superbus, to fish, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri. Results found the bioaccumulation of TCS changed with algal biomass, while the bioaccumulation of Ti and Zn varied with the amount of lipids and proteins in algal cells. In algae, Ti was in the form of nTiO2 and Zn in the form of zinc ion. Due to dietary exposure, Ti and Zn quantity in fish was closely related to that in algae. The quantity of Ti and Zn in algae and fish exposed to the interaction of nTiO2 * nZnO* TCS was higher than that in other treatments. The uptake of Ti and Zn in algae exposed to the interaction of nTiO2 * nZnO had been inhibited, and the corresponding fish also had less Ti and Zn in their tissues. nTiO2-containing treatments had higher Ti proportion in muscle than gill in fish. Treatment nZnO had the most Zn in gill, whereas nZnO * TCS-containing treatments had higher Zn proportion in gut than other tissues. No observation of TCS in fish in all treatments suggested the removal and metabolism of TCS might be induced by tissue recovery and acclimation. This is the first report on trophic transfer of mixed nanoparticles and personal care product in an algae-algae eating fish two-stage food chain.
Toxicity and Bioaccumulation of TiO2 Nanoparticle Aggregates in Daphnia Magna.

Abstract:Little is known about the potential ecotoxicity of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) to aquatic organisms. To carefully address this issue, we conducted a comprehensive toxicity assessment, including modified acute (72h) and chronic (21d) toxicity tests as well as nTiO2 accumulation analysis using Daphnia magna as a model organism. We found that nTiO2 exerted minimal toxicity to daphnia within the traditional 48h exposure time, but caused high toxicity when the exposure time was extended to 72h. This demonstrated that exposure duration may be a contributing factor in NP-mediated toxicity. Moreover, upon chronic exposure to nTiO2 for 21d, daphnia displayed severe growth retardation and mortality, as well as reproductive defects. Interestingly, a significant amount of nTiO2 was found accumulated in daphnia. However, these daphnia displayed difficulty in eliminating nTiO2 from their body, presenting increased bioconcentration factor (BCF) values. This high level of bioaccumulation may interfere with food intake and ultimately affect growth and reproduction. In summary, long-term exposure of aquatic organisms to nTiO2 may alter the growing status of these organisms at both individual and population levels, posing risks to aquatic ecosystems.
TiO2 Nanoparticles Enhanced Bioaccumulation and Toxic Performance of PAHs Via Trophic Transfer

Abstract:Engineering nanoparticles (NPs) could act as accumulator and carrier of co-contaminants, affecting their fate and toxicity in environments. However, the effects of NPs on the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of co-contaminants through the food chain and the ensuing effects on higher predators are unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2) on the trophic transfer of phenanthrene (Phe) from prey Artemia salina to predator Scophthalmus maximus. We also evaluated the ensuing toxic performance of Phe in S. maximus after been transferred from A. salina in the presence and absence of nTiO2. The presence of nTiO2 significantly (p < 0.05) increased Phe accumulation in A. salina with higher bioconcentration factor (BCF) up to 90.9 than that of 38.6 in Phe exposure along. After trophic transfer, nTiO2 (1 mg/L) also promoted the bioaccumulation of Phe (1 μg/L) in predator S. maximus from 4.17 mg/kg to 7.85 mg/kg (dry weight). However, nTiO2 did not enhance the trophic transfer of Phe from A. salina to S. maximus since the biological magnification factor (BMF) decreased from 0.13 to 0.08. Nevertheless, the nTiO2-enhanced bioaccumulation of Phe did enhance Phe toxicity performance in predator S. maximus after trophic transfer, showing significant (p < 0.05) growth inhibition and changes of nutrient status in the predator, compared to those of the control. Further physio-biochemical investigations suggested that oxidative stress and inhibition of digestive functions might explain the growth inhibition in treatment with nTiO2 + Phe. This study demonstrates the first evidence that NP-enhanced bioaccumulation and toxic performance of co-existing pollutants across trophic transfer, which poses potential risks to marine ecosystems, and ultimately human health by seafood consumption.
Endocytosis, intracellular fate, accumulation, and agglomeration of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in the rainbow trout liver cell line RTL-W1

Abstract:There is increasing evidence that titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) present in water or diet can be taken up by fish and accumulate in internal organs including the liver. However, their further fate in the organ is unknown. This study provides new insights into the interaction, uptake mechanism, intracellular trafficking, and fate of TiO2 NPs (Aeroxide® P25) in fish liver parenchymal cells (RTL-W1) in vitro using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) as complementary analytical techniques. The results demonstrate that following their uptake via caveolae-mediated endocytosis, TiO2 NPs were trafficked through different intracellular compartments including early endosomes, multivesicular bodies, and late endosomes/endo-lysosomes, and eventually concentrated inside multilamellar vesicles. TEM and spICP-MS results provide evidence that uptake was nano-specific. Only NPs/NP agglomerates of a specific size range (~ 30-100 nm) were endocytosed; larger agglomerates were excluded from uptake and remained located in the extracellular space/exposure medium. NP number and mass inside cells increased linearly with time and was associated with an increase in particle diameter suggesting intracellular agglomeration/aggregation. No alterations in the expression of genes regulated by the redox balance-sensitive transcription factor Nrf-2 including superoxide dismutase, glutamyl cysteine ligase, glutathione synthetase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione S-transferase were observed. This shows that, despite the high intracellular NP burden (~ 3.9 × 102 ng Ti/mg protein after 24 h) and NP-interaction with mitochondria, cellular redox homeostasis was not significantly affected. This study contributes to a better mechanistic understanding of in vitro particokinetics as well as the potential fate and effects of TiO2 NPs in fish liver cells.

Abstract:The bioaccumulation and depuration of TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) by zebrafish via the dietary exposure following the OECD Test Guideline 305 (OECD TG305) was evaluated using particle size- and number concentration-resolved analysis based on single-particle ICP-MS (spICP-MS). We found that using enzymatic digestion without H2O2 or excessive heating can recover 84.0 ± 4.0% and 94.5 ± 3.5% of TiO2NP mass and number concentrations from fish tissue, respectively, without altering the size distribution of parent TiO2NPs. OECD TG305 can allow for the evaluation of bioaccumulation and depuration of TiO2NPs by fish based on the particle mass and number dose metrics. The toxicokinetic modeling can reasonably describe the mass- and number-based measurement data with the derived absorption efficiency α at ~0.2, depuration rate at ~0.5 d-1, and kinetic biomagnification factor (BMFk) at ~0.007 comparable with available data. The mass concentration- and number concentration-based bioaccumulation metrics including body burdens are correlated for TiO2NPs that remained nano-sized in vivo and exhibited marginal physicochemical alterations upon uptake by fish. The result indicates that the traditional mass concentration metric may be used to represent the fish bioaccumulation potential for chemically inert NPs like TiO2.

Seasonal distributions of Ti-containing NPs in the main tributaries of the Tamsuei River Basin in northern Taiwan

Abstract:This study aimed to characterize seasonal variations in Ti-containing nanoparticles in the Tamsuei River Basin, situated in northern Taiwan, using sp-ICPMS. The highest particulate mass concentrations were present in the Dahan River, 0.80 − 1.64 ng/mL and 5.65 − 9.94 ng/mL in the dry and wet seasons, respectively, whereas the lowest concentrations were observed in the Xindian River, 0.05 − 0.31 ng/mL and 0.34 − 1.92 ng/mL in the dry and wet seasons, respectively. The highest particulate number concentrations were found in the Keelung River, 170 × 103 − 231 × 103 part./mL in the dry season and 1,372 × 103 − 4,110 × 103 part./mL in the wet season, while the lowest ones presented in the Xindian River. Notably, both particulate mass and number concentrations were significantly elevated during the wet season compared with the dry season, exhibiting a general increase from upstream to downstream. Moreover, a higher proportion of Ti in particulate form was observed in all samples during the wet season. The most frequent sizes for particles present in the samples of the Dahan River were larger during the dry season, 60 − 72 nm, in contrast to the wet season, 38 − 52 nm. These findings suggest that local geology and land use patterns may contribute to variations in Ti-containing nanoparticle concentration distributions among different rivers, particularly during the wet season.

Abstract:Quantitative characterization of nanoparticles (NPs) in marine shellfish is critical to understanding the risks of bio-accumulation. Based on single particle (sp)ICP-MS and electron microscopy, a standardized protocol was developed to extract Ag, Au, and indigenous Ti-containing NPs from mussels. The optimal parameters are: dry sample extraction with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH), 5% (v/v) final concentration of TMAH, extraction at 25 ℃ for 12 h, and separation by centrifugation (3000 rpm for 5 min). The particle number recoveries of spiked Ag and Au NPs were 88 ± 0.9% and 95 ± 1.1%, respectively, while Ti-containing NPs had a particle number concentration of 8.2 × 106 particles/mg and an average size of 70 nm in tested mussels. Furthermore, titanium oxide NPs, including rutile, anatase, and Magnéli phases (TixO2x-1) were found ubiquitously in 10 shellfish based on the optimal method. The particle number concentrations and average sizes of the Ti-containing NPs were 2.1 × 106–8.4 × 106 particles/mg and 70–80 nm, respectively. These Ti-containing NPs, such as TiO2, accounted for about half of the Ti mass in shellfish, indicating that marine shellfish may be a significant sink for Ti-containing NPs.

Abstract:The recent increase in nanomaterial usage has led to concerns surrounding its health risks and environmental impact. The food chain is an important pathway for high-trophic-level organisms absorbing and enriching nanomaterials. Our study therefore simulated nanometer titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) transfer along a 2-step food chain, from the unicellular alga Scenedesmus obliquus to the water flea Daphnia magna. We also explored the effect of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) on nano-TiO2 bioavailability. A suspension of 10 mg/L nano-TiO2 was optimally dispersed in aqueous solutions by 5 mg/L SDBS. After 72 h, S. obliquus growth was not significantly affected by 10 mg/L nano-TiO2, 5 mg/L SDBS and their mixed suspension. SDBS not only improved nano-TiO2 stability in water, but also increased its uptake in S. obliquus and enhanced its accumulation in D. magna. Our study suggests that nano-TiO2 is mildly toxic to S. obliquus, and can be transferred along the aquatic food chain with a biomagnification effect.

Abstract:The wide application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has inevitably led to their release into the natural aquatic environment. Natural organic matter (NOM) is ubiquitous and would influence the fate and effects of these nanoparticles in such aquatic environments. Here we demonstrate that NOM plays an important role in the bioaccumulation kinetics and tissue distribution of AgNPs in zebrafish. In the presence of humic acid and fulvic acid, the uptake rates of AgNPs decreased while the depuration rates of AgNPs increased. As a result, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of AgNPs in the entire body of the zebrafish was reduced. AgNPs were mainly taken up by the zebrafish via oral ingestion and were greatly accumulated in the liver, intestine and gill. In the intestine, NOM effectively inhibited the AgNPs from penetrating the cell membranes into internal tissues and also suppressed the disintegration and dissolution of AgNPs in gastrointestinal fluid, thereby decreasing the absorption of Ag by zebrafish. This research underlines the significance of incorporating the effects of NOM into predictive models for accurately assessing the toxicity and ecological risks of nanoparticles in natural aquatic environments.
Isotopic fractionation of particulate organic matter and its biogeochemical implication in the littoral zone of Lake Taihu, China

Abstract:Signatures of stable isotope ratios have previously been used to trace the source and transport of particulate organic matter (POM) in freshwater and marine ecosystems. In this study, water columns were collected at 22 sites in the littoral zone of Lake Taihu in 2014 to investigate the distribution and concentration of nutrients and the stable isotope signatures of POM, and their potential interrelation. Generally, mean concentration of nitrogen forms (NH4+-N) showed substantial variation, probably because they had received large amounts of wastewater from various local industrial enterprises. Source analysis by stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios showed that the main POM sources were phytoplankton. Contrasting correlations were obtained between δ15N and N concentrations in effluent river mouths when compared with influent river mouths. In effluent river mouths, there was a significant positive correlation between δ15N and nitrogen concentration (total nitrogen and ammonia-nitrogen), in contrast with the negative correlation in influent river mouths. According to these results, more factors should be taken into consideration when stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes of POM are used to assess the feeding relationship between consumers and prey, as well as the energy flow pathways that support the lake pelagic food webs.

Abstract:In this study, we collected 56 species of fishery organisms (including fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, gastropods, and bivalves) from four seasonal survey cruises at the Dachen fishery grounds. We measured the concentrations of seven heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, As, and Hg) in these fisheries organisms. We determined their trophic levels using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope techniques. We analyzed the characteristics of heavy metal transfer in the food chain. The results showed significant differences in heavy metal concentrations among different species. Among all biological groups, bivalves and gastropods exhibited higher levels of heavy metal enrichment than other biological groups, while fish had the lowest levels of heavy metal enrichment. Heavy metals exhibited different patterns of nutritional transfer in the food chain. While Hg showed a biomagnification phenomenon in the food chain, it was not significant. Cd, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, and As exhibited a trend of biodilution with increasing nutritional levels, except for As, which showed no significant correlation with δ 15 N.

Tio2 Nanoparticles In The Marine Environment: Enhancing Bioconcentration, While Limiting Biotransformation Of Arsenic In The Mussel Perna Viridis

Abstract:The increasing use of nanoscale TiO2 particles (nTiO(2)) and their subsequent leakage into aquatic environments poses a threat to the ecosystem. One major concern is that nTiO(2) may alter the environmental behaviors of arsenic (As) and disrupt the equilibrium of As accumulation and speciation in organisms. In this study, we investigated the effects of nTiO(2) on the bioaccumulation and biotransformation of As(V) in the mussel Perna viridis. Exposure to nTiO(2) significantly increased As accumulation in mussels. Our As speciation analysis demonstrated that nTiO(2) treatment increased the proportion of inorganic As and reduced that of organic As, displaying inhibitory effects on the methylation and detoxification of inorganic As in mussels. Analysis of enzyme systems related to As metabolism in mussels demonstrated that nTiO(2) might limit the methylation of inorganic As by suppressing the GST activity and GSH content. The strong adsorption capacity and weak desorption rate of As by nTiO(2), which could result in the disruption of As distribution and decrease of the amount of As involved in biotransformation, might serve as another mechanism to the limition on As methylation in mussels. Moreover, exposure to nTiO(2) disturbed the osmotic adjustment system in mussels by reducing arsenobetaine and Na+-K+-ATPase activity, resulting in enhanced toxicity of As after coexposure. The findings indicate, for the first time, that nTiO(2) can block the transformation and detoxification of As in mussels, which would increase the risk of As to marine animals and even humans via the food chain, and may disrupt the biogeochemical cycle of As in natural environments.
Sediment prokaryote communities in different sites of eutrophic Lake Taihu and their interactions with environmental factors

Abstract:To investigate the temporal variation of the sediment prokaryote communities and their relation with the rapid increase of algae population in Taihu, a shallow eutrophic freshwater Lake, water and surface sediments were sampled from seven sites in different stages of algal bloom. The physicochemical characterization revealed positive correlations among the nutrient (N, P) parameters in the water and sediments, as well as TN/TP ratio 30.79 in average in water and 0.13 in sediments, demonstrating that P content was the limit factor for bloom in Taihu and sediment was an important nutrient resource for the water body. T-RFLP analysis of 16S rRNA genes revealed a diversity decrease of sediment prokaryotic communities along the bloom. The bacterial communities in sediments were more sensitive and shaped by the temporal changes, while archaea were more sensitive to the trophic level. The pyrosequencing data showed clear spatial and temporal changes in diversity of sediment bacteria. Betaproteobacteria was the most abundant group in all the samples, following by Delta-, Gama- and Alpha-proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chlorobi, Chloroflexi etc. At the genus level, Thiobacillus and Sulfuricurvum were the most dominant groups in the sediments, and the increase of Thiobacillus abundance in February might be used as bioindicator for the subsequent bloom. In addition, NO3−-N was evidenced to be the main factor to regulate the bacterial community structure in the sediments. These results offered some novel and important data for the evaluation and predict the algal bloom in Taihu and can be reference for other shallow fresh water lakes.

Abstract:Fish are important food sources for humans, and the availability of appropriate amount of trace elements (TEs) plays a crucial role in fish growth. Currently, due to large volumes of sewage discharge, high levels of certain elements are present in aquatic environments, and these elements accumulate in fish and potentially affect human health. In this study, the distribution and bioaccumulation capacity of trace elements in six dominant fish species from Chaohu Lake (China) were analyzed. The results showed that the bioaccumulation capacity of fish for Zn was greater than other TEs. And the source of the TEs in the fish were explored along with the concentration of the TEs in the aquatic environment, which indicated that TEs in fish were mainly obtained through ingestion and indirectly affected by the industrial activities in the basin. Additionally, stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes were used to classify the trophic levels and explore the biological magnification of TEs of the fish. It was found that Sb and Sr showed biomagnification with the increase of trophic level of fish. Based on the above analyses, the environmental biogeochemical cycle model of TEs in the lake was distinguished and established, which can offer valuable insights for sustainable fishery management in the downstream Yangtze River Delta ecosystem.
