Abstract:Thermal expansion phenomena are of both engineering and fundamental interest. The conventional theory of thermal expansion of solids considers anharmonic phonon effects but largely neglects other kind of elementary excitations. A recent experiment reported a negative thermal expansion (NTE) of a two-dimensional magnet CrBr3 at low-temperatures. Our first-principles calculations, if only the effects of atomic vibrations are considered, predict a low-temperature NTE but lower by several orders of magnitude than experimental data. We propose magnetic excitations (magnons) as another important contributor to the NTE. We extend the theory of thermal expansion by including the contribution from magnons to Helmholtz free energy. First-principles calculations based on this theory confirm the dominate role of magnons in the negative thermal expansion of CrBr3 as well as in other two-dimensional magnets.

Abstract:The transition-metal based Laves phase materials represent an extended family of alloys with rich and fascinating physical properties. In this work, we have investigated the negative thermal expansion and magnetocaloric effect in arc-melted and melt-spun Fe 2 Hf 1- x Ti x ( x = 0.15, 0.27, 0.30, 0.33, 0.36, 0.40) alloys. For x = 0.30 - 0.40, two hexagonal phases with different compositions share the same P 6 3 /mmc lattice symmetry, but have slightly different lattice parameters. The saturation magnetization and Curie temperature both follow a decreasing trend with the average unit-cell volume. For Fe 2 Hf 0.6 Ti 0.4 melt spinning improves the saturation magnetization from 48.7 to 59.6 Am 2 /kg and the magnetic entropy change from 0.46 to 0.54 J/kgK at a magnetic field change of 2 T. These enhanced values are attributed to an improved homogeneity caused by a suppression of phase segregation during rapid solidification. We have utilized neutron powder diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy to illustrate the correlation between the magnetic order and the negative thermal expansion in single-phase Fe 2 Hf 0.85 Ti 0.15 . The magnetic moments of Fe align below 400 K in the a-b plane and a moment change for the Fe atoms is responsible for the large volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion of -25 × 10 -6 K -1 over a wide temperature range of 300 - 400 K.

Abstract:By virtue of the unique advantages of compensating and controlling thermal expansion, negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials have attracted great attention and have gained rapid development in the last two decades. The history of NTE can be traced back to the discovery of magnetic Invar alloy in 1897. Due to the complexity and variability of magnetism, studies on the magnetic NTE materials, including the discovery of new materials, the controllable thermal expansion, and the origin of magnetic NTE, have never stopped for more than one century. In this review, we will summarize the progress in the magnetic NTE materials from the prototype Invar alloys to the recently discovered materials such as Mn-based antiperovskites, Laves phases, La(Fe,Si)13, Mn3Ge, R2Fe17, R(Fe,V)12, and R2Fe14B (R = rare earth elements). Based on the variable magnetic transition types, the magnetic NTE materials are reviewed in detail from magnetic and crystal structures, NTE properties, and mechanisms. The main mechanisms of the NTE of magnetic materials are summarized for the first time, including order-to-disorder transition, the change of local moment, metamagnetic transition, short-range magnetic ordering, structural phase transition, and the coexistence of magnetic phases. The NTE properties of magnetic materials can be controlled by adjusting magnetic exchange interaction via the methods of chemical substitution, nanocrystallization, external field, and interstitial atoms. More importantly, by enhancing the negative contribution of the magnetic transition to thermal expansion, the new magnetic NTE materials can be found from the normal positive thermal expansion materials. This review will be helpful for the design of novel magnetic NTE materials, the control of thermal expansion properties, and the understandings of magnetic NTE mechanisms.

Abstract:Zero thermal expansion (ZTE) with a negligible coefficient of thermal expansion av of 2.4 ppm K−1 in a broad temperature range is achieved owing to the significant contribution of interstitial C into a Hf–Ta–Fe magnet. The corresponding mechanism of tuning normal positive thermal expansion into intriguingly ZTE via enhanced magnetoelastic coupling during magnetic transition is clarified by comprehensive property measurements, direct observation of magnetic transition, and theoretical calculations. Zero‐thermal‐expansion (ZTE) alloys, as dimensionally stable materials, are urgently required in many fields, particularly in highly advanced modern industries. In this study, high‐performance ZTE with a negligible coefficient of thermal expansion av as small as 2.4 ppm K−1 in a broad temperature range of 85–245 K is discovered in Hf0.85Ta0.15Fe2C0.01 magnet. It is demonstrated that the addition of trace interstitial atom C into Ta‐substituted Hf0.85Ta0.15Fe2 exhibits significant capability to tune the normal positive thermal expansion into high‐performance ZTE via enhanced magnetoelastic coupling in stabilized ferromagnetic structure. Moreover, direct observation of the magnetic transition between ferromagnetic and triangular antiferromagnetic states via Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, along with corresponding theoretical calculations, further uncovers the manipulation mechanism of ZTE and negative thermal expansion. A convenient and effective method to optimize thermal expansion and achieve ZTE with interstitial C addition may result in broadened applications based on the strong correlation between the magnetic properties and crystal structure.

Abstract:The negative thermal expansion (NTE) behavior provides us an opportunity to design materials with controllable coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). In this letter, we report a tunable isotropic thermal expansion in the cubic (Sc1−xZrx)F3+δ over a wide temperature and CTE range (αl = −4.0 to+ 16.8 × 10−6 K−1, 298–648 K). The thermal expansion can be well adjusted from strong negative to zero, and finally to large positive. Intriguingly, isotropic zero thermal expansion (αl = 2.6 × 10−7 K−1, 298–648 K) has been observed in the composition of (Sc0.8Zr0.2)F3+δ. The controllable thermal expansion in (Sc1−xZrx)F3+δ is correlated to the local structural distortion. Interestingly, the ordered magnetic behavior has been found in the zero thermal expansion compound of (Sc0.8Zr0.2)F3+δ at room temperature, which presumably correlates with the unpaired electron of the lower chemical valence of Zr cation. The present study provides a useful reference to control the thermal expansion and explore the multi-functionalization for NTE materials.

Abstract:The effects of Ta substitution on the phase transition have been studied in Hf1-xTaxFe1.98 (x=0.125, 0.13, 0.135) alloys with kagome-type lattice. Increased Ta substitution leads into the reduced metamagnetic transition temperature (Tt). The nature of such phase transition is also changed from second-order type to the weak first-order one, suggested by the gradually observed hysteresis. The magnetic entropy change (ΔS) is meanwhile enhanced from 3.04 Jkg-1K-1 to 3.4 Jkg-1K-1. Such enhanced magnetocaloric effects are strongly correlated with the enhanced magneto-elastic effect, which is further confirmed by the maximized saturation magnetostriction (λs//) of ∼1700 ppm near the Tt of Hf0.865Ta0.135Fe1.98 alloy. The concurrence of maximized ΔSmax and λs// suggests the strong magneto-elastic coupling during phase transition and the high linear co-efficiency of negative thermal expansion can be triggered in Fe-deficient Hf0.865Ta0.135Fe1.98 alloy.

Abstract:Most solids expand when they are heated, but a property known as negative thermal expansion has been observed in a number of materials, including the oxide ZrW2O8 (ref. 1) and the framework material ZnxCd1−x(CN)2 (refs 2,3). This unusual behaviour can be understood in terms of low-energy phonons1,2,3,4,5,6, while the colossal values of both positive and negative thermal expansion recently observed in another framework material, Ag3[Co(CN)6], have been explained in terms of the geometric flexibility of its metal–cyanide–metal linkages7. Thermal expansion can also be stopped in some magnetic transition metal alloys below their magnetic ordering temperature, a phenomenon known as the Invar effect8,9, and the possibility of exploiting materials with tuneable positive or negative thermal expansion in industrial applications has led to intense interest in both the Invar effect and negative thermal expansion. Here we report the results of thermal expansion experiments on three magnetic nanocrystals—CuO, MnF2 and NiO—and find evidence for negative thermal expansion in both CuO and MnF2 below their magnetic ordering temperatures, but not in NiO. Larger particles of CuO and MnF2 also show prominent magnetostriction (that is, they change shape in response to an applied magnetic field), which results in significantly reduced thermal expansion below their magnetic ordering temperatures; this behaviour is not observed in NiO. We propose that the negative thermal expansion effect in CuO (which is four times larger than that observed in ZrW2O8) and MnF2 is a general property of nanoparticles in which there is strong coupling between magnetism and the crystal lattice.

Abstract:Negative thermal expansion materials can solve the challenge of mismatched coefficients of thermal expansion of components in precision instruments, thereby improving the thermal shock resistance of devices. The adjustment of negative thermal expansion performance can improve the universality of its application. In this work, tunable thermal expansion has been achieved in Hf1−xTaxFe2 kagome magnets via magnetic phase competition. The transition from ferromagnetism to antiferromagnetism results in a sharp volume shrinkage of Hf0.83Ta0.17Fe2 within a narrow temperature range of 190–230 K, which limits its practical application. As the Ta content decreases, the ferromagnetic ground state becomes more robust and eventually suppresses the antiferromagnetism completely, achieving a negative thermal expansion in Hf0.88Ta0.12Fe2 caused by the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition over a wide temperature region and containing room temperature (αV = −37.63 × 10−6 K−1, 250–350 K). This work realizes the regulation of negative thermal expansion through magnetic phase competition, which provides guidance for the regulation of thermal expansion of magnetic materials in the future.

Abstract:We characterize perovskite TiF_3, a material which displays significant negative thermal expansion at elevated temperatures above its cubic-to-rhombohedral structural phase transition at 330 K. We find the optical response favors an insulating state in both structural phases, which we show can be produced in density functional theory calculations only through the introduction of an on-site Coulomb repulsion. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility data gives a S=1/2 local moment per Ti+3 ion and an antiferromagnetic exchange coupling. Together, these results show that TiF_3 is a strongly correlated electron system, a fact which constrains possible mechanisms of strong negative thermal expansion in the Sc_1-xTi_xF3 system. We consider the relative strength of the Jahn-Teller and electric dipole interactions in driving the structural transition.

Abstract:Metallic materials that exhibit negligible thermal expansion or zero thermal expansion (ZTE) have great merit for practical applications, but these materials are rare and their thermal expansions are difficult to control. Here, we successfully tailored the thermal expansion behaviors from strongly but abruptly negative to zero over wide temperature ranges in a series of (Gd,R)(Co,Fe)2 (R = Dy, Ho, Er) intermetallic compounds by tuning the composition to bring the first-order magnetic phase transition to second-order. Interestingly, an unusual isotropic ZTE property with a coefficient of thermal expansion of α l = 0.16(0) × 10-6 K-1 was achieved in cubic Gd0.25Dy0.75Co1.93Fe0.07 (GDCF) in the temperature range of 10-275 K. The short-wavelength neutron powder diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and magnetic measurement studies evidence that this ZTE behavior was ascribed to the rare-earth-moment-dominated spontaneous volume magnetostriction, which can be controlled by an adjustable magnetic phase transition. The present work extends the scope of the ZTE family and provides an effective approach to exploring ZTE materials, such as by adjusting the magnetism or ferroelectricity-related phase transition in the family of functional materials.
Giant Negative Electrocaloric Effect Induced by Domain Transition in the Strained Ferroelectric Thin Film

Abstract:Electrocaloric effect (ECE) of ferroelectric materials is highly dependent on the domain transition with temperature. The effect of domain transition on the ECE of PbTiO3 (PTO) ferroelectric thin films subjected to different mismatch strains is investigated by a phase field model based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation. The simulation results demonstrate that there exists a multiple-to-single domain transition induced by temperature in the PTO thin film. The domain transition occurs at a temperature that is much lower than Curie temperature, resulting in a giant negative ECE in the strained ferroelectric thin film. Furthermore, the domain transition temperature and the corresponding negative ECE can be tuned by the magnitude of mismatch strain. The present study suggests an effective way to obtain a giant negative ECE, by domain transitions in the strained ferroelectric thin film.

Abstract:Due to the advantage of invariable length with temperatures, zero thermal expansion (ZTE) materials are intriguing but very rare especially for the metals based compounds. Here, we report a ZTE in the magnetic intermetallic compounds of Tb(Co,Fe)(2) over a wide temperature range (123-307 K). A negligible coefficient of thermal expansion (alpha(1) = 0.48 X 10(-6) K-1) has been. found in Tb(Co1.9Fe0.1). Tb(Co,Fe)(2) exhibits ferrimagnetic structure, in which the moments of Th and Co/Fe are antiparallel alignment along the c axis. The intriguing ZTE property of Tb(Co,Fe)(2) is formed due to the balance between the negative contribution from the Tb magnetic moment induced spontaneous magnetostriction and the positive role from the normal lattice expansion. The present ZTE intermetallic compounds are also featured by the advantages of wide temperature range, high electrical conductivity, and relatively high thermal conductivity.
Negative Thermal Expansion over a Wide Temperature Range in Fe-Doped MnNiGe Composites

Abstract:Fe-doped MnNiGe alloys were successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction. Giant negative thermal expansion (NTE) behaviors with the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of -285.23 × 10-6 K-1 (192-305 K) and -1167.09 × 10-6 K-1 (246-305 K) have been obtained in Mn0.90Fe0.10NiGe and MnNi0.90Fe0.10Ge, respectively. Furthermore, these materials were combined with Cu in order to control the NTE properties. The results indicate that the absolute value of CTE gradually decreases with increasing Cu contents. In Mn0.92Fe0.08NiGe/x%Cu, the CTE gradually changes from -64.92 × 10-6 K-1 (125-274 K) to -4.73 × 10-6 K-1 (173-229 K) with increasing value of x from 15 to 70. The magnetic measurements reveal that the NTE behaviors in this work are strongly correlated with the process of the magnetic phase transition and the introduction of Fe atoms could also change the spiral anti-ferromagnetic (s-AFM) state into ferromagnetic (FM) state at low temperature. Our study launches a new candidate for controlling thermal expansion properties of metal matrix materials which could have potential application in variable temperature environment.

Abstract:The rare physical property of zero thermal expansion (ZTE) is intriguing because neither expansion nor contraction occurs with temperature fluctuations. Most ZTE, however, occurs below room temperature. It is a great challenge to achieve isotropic ZTE at high temperatures. Here we report the unconventional isotropic ZTE in the cubic (Sc1-xMx)F3 (M = Ga, Fe) over a wide temperature range (linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), αl = 2.34 × 10(-7) K(-1), 300-900 K). Such a broad temperature range with a considerably negligible CTE has rarely been documented. The present ZTE property has been designed using the introduction of local distortions in the macroscopic cubic lattice by heterogeneous cation substitution for the Sc site. Even though the macroscopic crystallographic structure of (Sc0.85Ga0.05Fe0.1)F3 adheres to the cubic system (Pm3̅m) according to the results of X-ray diffraction, the local structure exhibits a slight rhombohedral distortion. This is confirmed by pair distribution function analysis of synchrotron radiation X-ray total scattering. This local distortion may weaken the contribution from the transverse thermal vibration of fluorine atoms to negative thermal expansion, and thus may presumably be responsible for the ZTE. In addition, the present ZTE compounds of (Sc1-xMx)F3 can be functionalized to exhibit high-Tc ferromagnetism and a narrow-gap semiconductor feature. The present study shows the possibility of obtaining ZTE materials with multifunctionality in future work.

Abstract:Magnetism-induced negative thermal expansion (NTE) observed in inverse perovskite antiferromagnets Mn3AN (A=Zn, Ga, etc.) is theoretically studied by a classical spin model with competing bond-length-dependent exchange interactions. We numerically reproduce the crystal-volume expansion upon cooling triggered by a non-coplanar antiferromagnetic order and show that the expansion occurs so as to maximize an energy gain of the nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. This mechanism is not specific to inverse perovskite magnets and might also be expected in magnets with other crystal structures. We propose other candidate crystal structures that might exhibit NTE through this mechanism.

Abstract:Recent experimental work has revealed that the unusually strong, isotropic structural negative thermal expansion in cubic perovskite ionic insulator ScF3 occurs in excited states above a ground state tuned very near a structural quantum phase transition, posing a question of fundamental interest as to whether this special circumstance is related to the anomalous behavior. To test this hypothesis, we report an elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering study of a second system Hg2I2 also tuned near a structural quantum phase transition while retaining stoichiometric composition and high crystallinity. We find similar behavior and significant negative thermal expansion below 100 K for dimensions along the body-centered-tetragonal c axis, bolstering the connection between negative thermal expansion and zero-temperature structural transitions. We identify the common traits between these systems and propose a set of materials design principles that can guide discovery of new materials exhibiting negative thermal expansion.

Ultrathin nanosheets of TiTe(2-x)I(x) solid solutions, which are a new class of inorganic two-dimensional magnetic material, exhibit negative magnetoresistance with a value of up to -85%, due to the spin-dependent scattering effects of local Ti(3+) 3d(1) moments that are antiferromagnetically coupled. Moreover, TiTe(2-x)I(x) serials show unique transport behaviors with continuous evolution from metallic to semiconducting states. We anticipate that anionic doping will be a powerful tool for optimizing the intrinsic physical properties of two-dimensional transition metal chalcogenide system.

Abstract:Abstract Negative thermal expansion (NTE) is an intriguing property, which is generally triggered by a single NTE mechanism. In this work, an enhanced NTE ( α v = −32.9 × 10 −6 K −1 , Δ T = 175 K) is achieved in YbMn 2 Ge 2 intermetallic compound to be caused by a dual effect of magnetism and valence transition. In YbMn 2 Ge 2 , the Mn sublattice that forms the antiferromagnetic structure induces the magnetovolume effect, which contributes to the NTE below the Néel temperature (525 K). Concomitantly, the valence state of Yb increases from 2.40 to 2.82 in the temperature range of 300–700 K, which simultaneously causes the contraction of the unit cell volume due to smaller volume of Yb 3+ than that of Yb 2+ . As a result, such combined effect gives rise to an enhanced NTE. The present study not only sheds light on the peculiar NTE mechanism of YbMn 2 Ge 2 , but also indicates the dual effect as a possible promising method to produce enhanced NTE materials.

Abstract:AbstractStudies of negative magnetoresistance in novel materials have recently been in the forefront of spintronic research. Here, we report an experimental observation of the temperature dependent negative magnetoresistance in Bi2Te3 topological insulator (TI) nanowires at ultralow temperatures (20 mK). We find a crossover from negative to positive magnetoresistance while increasing temperature under longitudinal magnetic field. We observe a large negative magnetoresistance which reaches −22% at 8 T. The interplay between negative and positive magnetoresistance can be understood in terms of the competition between dephasing and spin-orbit scattering time scales. Based on the first-principles calculations within a density functional theory framework, we demonstrate that disorder (substitutional) by Ga+ ion milling process, which is used to fabricate nanowires, induces local magnetic moments in Bi2Te3 crystal that can lead to spin-dependent scattering of surface and bulk electrons. These experimental findings show a significant advance in the nanoscale spintronics applications based on longitudinal magnetoresistance in TIs. Our experimental results of large negative longitudinal magnetoresistance in 3D TIs further indicate that axial anomaly is a universal phenomenon in generic 3D metals.
