Abstract:Polymeric membranes have been applied in industrial gas separations for decades. Competing technologies, such as cryogenic distillation and sorption processes, require the gases to be either condensed or thermally regenerated from the sorbents. In contrast, membrane gas separation does not involve phase transition, representing the potential for a more energy efficient and eco-friendly separation process. However, the overall energy consumption by membrane gas separation is highly dependent on the quality of the membrane employed for the separation process. With the goal of reducing the energy input needed for creating the transmembrane pressure difference, numerous bulk polymers have been investigated. However, less effort has been devoted to processing polymers into ultrathin membranes and investigating their gas permeation properties, which can be quite different from their bulk counterparts. This review summarizes recent advances in fabricating ultrathin gas-selective polymeric membranes. Several classes of ultrathin polymeric membranes are highlighted: microporous polymers, facilitated transport polymeric membranes, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and Layer-by-Layer (LbL) deposited polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs), polyamides and other commercial polymers. The application of gas-selective polymeric membranes beyond gas separation is also included as a meaningful extension to this review.
Molecular‐Sieving Membrane by Partitioning the Channels in Ultrafiltration Membrane by in Situ Polymerization

Abstract:Commercial ultrafiltration membranes have proliferated globally for water treatment. However, their pore sizes are too large to sieve gases. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) feature well-developed microporosity yet are difficult to be fabricated into membranes. Herein, we report a strategy to prepare molecular-sieving membranes by partitioning the mesoscopic channels in water ultrafiltration membrane (PSU) into ultra-micropores by space-confined polymerization of multi-functionalized rigid building units. Nine CMP@PSU membranes were obtained, and their separation performance for H2 /CO2 , H2 /N2 , and H2 /CH4 pairs surpass the Robeson upper bound and rival against the best of those reported membranes. Furthermore, highly crosslinked skeletons inside the channels result in the structural robustness and transfer into the excellent aging resistance of the CMP@PSU. This strategy may shed light on the design and fabrication of high-performance polymeric gas separation membranes.

Abstract:Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs), with an interconnected microporous network, high surface area, and structural diversity, have attracted great interest in developing diverse materials for various applications in the fields of environmental remediation, gas and liquid separation, sensors, and energy. Solution-processable PIMs can be transformed into various robust functional materials, including films, membranes, coatings, and fibers, that can be applied to address different industrial challenges. Since the first PIM synthesis, great strides have been made in expanding the structural diversity of PIMs by designing fine-tuned PIMs for various applications. This review provides a general overview of PIMs, from their synthesis to their involvement in state-of-the-art applications such as water and air filtration, gas and liquid separation, catalysis, sensing, and energy applications, during the last decade. Several PIMs have exhibited outstanding performance in oil adsorption, gas separation, and catalysis. In this context, PIMs' functionality and porosity are key parameters that must be controlled to tailor PIMs for broader applications. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive overview of PIMs from chemistry to applications and highlights the challenges and prospects of the next generation of PIM-based functional materials that will open new avenues for adsorption, gas separation, and filtration applications. Abstract:Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are a new type of polymer material with unique microporous structure and have been widely applied in gas separation. In recent years, PIMs have also experienced rapid growth in liquid separation and purification; however, so far, no review is reported on the application of PIMs in this field. This paper reports a comprehensive and critical review on the recent research progress of PIMs in the application of liquid separation and purification including membrane separation and adsorption. First, the structural characteristics and synthesis methods of PIMs are briefly described. Subsequently, their applications in membrane separation are described in detail, including pervaporation (removal of organics from water, dehydration of solvents, and separation of organic mixtures), nanofiltration (dye rejection), and adsorption (dyes, organic contaminants, metal ions, oil/water separation, and enantiomeric separation). The effect of material structure and modification on the separation performance is emphasized, and possible new research directions are mentioned. Finally, the application of PIMs in liquid separation and purification is prospected. In conclusion, PIMs exhibit excellent separation efficiency and stable operation characteristics in liquid separation and purification, and they have attractive and broad development prospects. More valuable applications remain to be developed.

Abstract:The adsorption and transport of molecules or ions in the confined space of microporous materials often reveal properties not seen in either dense bulk or microporous materials. The unexpected behavior of confined polymers motivates their application in advanced technologies. While the majority of microporous materials consist of network/framework-type strong intermolecular connections, making the processing and roll-to-roll fabrication of these materials particularly challenging, there exists a special category of microporous polymers that are amorphous and can be solution-processed. They feature relatively weak intermolecular bond strength, low long-range order, and large free-volume elements due to frustrated polymer chain motion. However, it remains elusive to design and synthesize solution-processable amorphous microporous organic polymers for those working in the field of membrane separations and electrochemistry. The application of membranes derived from these polymers in processes beyond gas separations is also overlooked. Thus, we review the synthetic strategies toward solution-processable amorphous microporous organic polymers (SAMOPs), with a particular focus on the characteristics and the monomer/polymer structural features of each reaction. Computation-based materials design, including computational tools are introduced that can reveal the monomer/polymer rigidity, polymer chain packing, thereby the generation of free volume elements, and the pore architecture, to facilitate the design and identification of desirable polymers. On-polymer modification methodology that can afford standing-alone membranes with functional groups for applications beyond gas separation, especially targeting membrane-based electrochemical devices are subsequently covered. The molecular transport/ion in the sub-1-nm space provided by solution-processable amorphous microporous organic polymers are presented and the wide range application of membranes derived from these polymers is demonstrated. Finally, challenges, perspectives, and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract:Novel types of microporous material are required for chemoselective adsorptions, separations and heterogeneous catalysis. This concept article describes recent research directed towards the synthesis of polymeric materials that possess microporosity that is intrinsic to their molecular structures. These polymers (PIMs) can exhibit analogous behaviour to that of conventional microporous materials, but, in addition, may be processed into convenient forms for use as membranes. The excellent performance of these membranes for gas separation and pervaporation illustrates the unique character of PIMs and suggests immediate technological applications.

Abstract:Microporous organic polymers (MOPs) are ideal candidates for designing highly efficient and precise molecular sieving separation membranes due to their exceptional porosity, rigid pore structure, pore size designability, and ease of functionalization. These materials encompass COFs, POCs, PAFs, PIMs, CMPs, and HCPs. However, the path to utilizing MOPs as separation membrane applications has encountered obstacles. Several studies have been conducted to fully exploit the exceptional properties of these polymers. The better application of MOPs materials should be considered in terms of material design and synthesis, membrane formation, and membrane task-specific applications. This review objectively reclassifies MOPs materials based on the latest research and material ordering and provides a systematic summary of MOPs material synthesis and design, MOPs-based membrane fabrication difficulties, and current novel MOPs-based membrane design. Additionally, it introduces in detail the preparation of different types of MOPs-based membranes. The applications of MOPs-based membranes in separation applications are also thoroughly summarized. Finally, this review summarizes the challenges of current MOPs-based membrane development, proposes future opportunities and potential applications in the separation and purification field.

Abstract:<p>Polyamide membranes dominate the membrane industry; yet in their use they have a fundamental challenge to break through the upper bound due to an uncontrollable, excessive crosslinking degree. A novel trend is the development of microporous polymeric membranes with rigidly intrinsic pores for rapid and precise molecular separation. Advanced microporous organic polymers (MOPs), divided into crystalline (e.g., COFs) and amorphous (e.g., PIMs, PAFs, CMPs, POCs, HCPs, etc.) catalogues, have proven promising in the development of molecular sieving membranes. Different from traditional polymers with dynamic microporosity, MOPs have sturdy and well-defined pore architectures due to a significant reduction of segmental chain motion, enabled by molecular-level design of the void-forming elements. MOPs have swiftly evolved as a promising alternative to conventional materials due to their intriguing inherent attributes, including robust organic backbone, persistent porosity, and high surface area. This review commences with the introduction of the MOP categories and elucidates their critical characteristics and advantages for membrane fabrication. In addition, recent breakthroughs on ultrahigh permeability MOP-based membranes based on molecular-level design approaches are highlighted, aiming at an in-depth understanding of the structure-function correlation of MOP membranes. Furthermore, a summary of applying MOP membranes for rapid molecular separations such as gas separation, water treatment, separation in a solvent phase, pervaporation, and fuel cells is outlined. Finally, a concise conclusion, current limitations as well as future opportunities and directions on the developments and applications of MOP membranes are presented.</p>

Abstract:High-performance polymers have been concomitant with advanced technology for half a century. With the advancement of synthetic chemistry, the recent development of high-performance polymers has provided superior properties and enabled wide applications. This article reviews recent research progress in aromatic high-performance polymers. Particularly, we focus on the synthesis and processing of polyimides, as well as the application in gas separation membranes. We begin with a brief introduction to highlight important history and physiochemical characteristics of polyimides. Then, we review the various synthesis methods, followed by recent advances for improving processability. Finally, we evaluate the use of high-performance polymers in gas separation membranes with focus given to the key issues of plasticization and aging. Overall, the information presented herein provides an up-to-date overview of high-performance polymers, polyimides particularly, and serves as a guide for further research involving the applications in membrane technologies.

Abstract:Membrane materials with excellent selectivity and high permeability are the key for high-efficiency membrane separation. New-type porous materials have developed as ideal building blocks for molecular sieving membranes due to their inherent properties, such as permanent porosity, high surface area, structural diversity and low mass transfer barriers. In actual industrial promotion and separation applications, porous materials need to be combined with substrates to prepare porous composite membranes. In order to reduce costs and increase processing flexibility, the combination of organic polymer substrates and porous materials has received more attentions. The multifunctional design strategy of the membrane material and membrane structure of porous composite membranes based on the organic subatrates is the key to realize the further improvement of mass transfer. In this review, we focus on the organic matrix porous composite membrane based on the participation of inorganic-organic hybrid materials and organic-organic composite materials, and conduct an in-depth discussion on the transport mechanism of porous composite membranes, and highlight diverse structural control strategies from the perspectives of macrostructural design and microstructural regulation of membrane structures. Finally, the applications of porous composite membrane based on organic substrate in precise molecular sieving are summarized, and the future opportunities and challenges in this field are discussed briefly.

Abstract:Membrane separation technology plays a pivotal role in modern industry and scientific research. The key to developing and improving membrane separation processes lies in designing and fabricating customized porous membranes with specific physical parameters, including pore diameter, porosity, pore size distribution, pore length (membrane thickness), pore geometry, and pore connectivity. Polymeric porous membranes with vertically‐penetrative‐pores (PPMVs) represent a distinct category among the available membranes due to their unique characteristics such as short transport path, small trans‐membrane resistance, and simple pore geometry, as compared to other porous membranes with sponge‐like channels. In practical applications, PPMVs offer several advantages, including achieving higher flux rates, facilitating easier unidirectional transport, and enabling harmless biological extraction. Moreover, PPMVs can serve as ideal model systems for theoretical investigations on the fundamental mechanisms of separation and transport in academic research. With substantial advancements in fabrication technologies and application fields of PPMVs in recent years, it warrants a comprehensive perspective. In this mini‐review, we provide an overview of widely used fabrication methods for PPMVs, discuss their primary applications, and address the existing challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:Membrane technology for gas separation and purification has unique economic and environmental advantages over conventional purification processes. Carbon molecular sieve membranes (CMSMs) have a higher gas permeability, selectivity, chemical resistance, and better thermal stability than polymer membranes, and have therefore received more attention. CMSMs are commonly fabricated by the pyrolysis of polymer precursors such as polyimides, resins, cellulose and polyetherimide. The reported fabrication process and gas separation performance of CMSMs made from various precursors are summarized and discussed. Both the chemical and physical structures of the precursor membranes affect the carbon structures and gas separation performances of the resulting CMSMs. Overall, the gas separation performance of CMSMs has been significantly improved in the last 20 years, and their possible commercial use is not far away. An in-depth understanding of this progress on CMSMs should provide researchers from different fields an understanding of how to promote their fabrication and applications.

Abstract:This review discusses the state of the art on the synthesis, functionalization and emerging applications of mesoporous silica materials. Mesoporous silica materials can be synthesized as membranes or powders with controlled pore size and geometry depending on the synthesis conditions. Mesoporous membranes are generally grown on porous supports by solvent evaporation or hydrothermal synthesis techniques. Synthesis of powdered mesoporous silica materials with controlled pore sizes in the range 2–30nm and various different pore geometries has been an active area of research over last 15years. Functionalization of the pore channels of ordered mesoporous silica with organic groups provides new opportunities for fine-tuning the chemical, physical, mechanical, and dielectric properties of these intriguing materials. This has led to an interest in application of these materials as separation membranes for the removal of environmental pollutants, e.g. greenhouse CO2 emissions, and the separation of bioethanol from water; heterogeneous catalysts; adsorbents for removal of environmental pollutants, such as Hg; as well as other advanced nanotechnological applications.

Abstract:Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are a unique class of porous organic materials, which are constructed with π-conjugation structures leading to intrinsic micropores. The CMPs properties such as high surface area, intrinsic and rich micropores, interlocking and rigid structure, extensive π-conjugation and tunable band-gap, chemical and thermal stability, together with tailored functionalities, contribute to its abundant potential for application in fields such as photocatalysis, optoelectronics, energy storage, and chemical sensors. Recently, CMPs have gained importance in the field of membranes for chemical separation. In this review, we briefly discuss the historical development of CMPs, followed by a detailed description of the progress in state-of-the-art design, preparation, and application of CMPs in membranes. Additionally, we provide inference on the future prospects of CMPs as membranes.

Abstract:Membrane-based Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIMs) are promising candidates for energy-efficient industrial gas separations, especially for the separation of carbon dioxide over methane (CO2/CH4) and carbon dioxide over nitrogen (CO2/N2) for natural gas/biogas upgrading and carbon capture from flue gases, respectively. Compared to other separation techniques, membrane separations offer potential energy and cost savings. Ultra-permeable PIM-based polymers are currently leading the trade-off between permeability and selectivity for gas separations, particularly in CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2. These membranes show a significant improvement in performance and fall within a linear correlation on benchmark Robeson plots, which are parallel to, but significantly above, the CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 Robeson upper bounds. This improvement is expected to enhance the credibility of polymer membranes for CO2 separations and stimulate further research in polymer science and applied engineering to develop membrane systems for these CO2 separations, which are critical to energy and environmental sustainability. This review aims to highlight the state-of-the-art strategies employed to enhance gas separation performances in PIM-based membranes while also mitigating aging effects. These strategies include chemical post-modification, crosslinking, UV and thermal treatment of PIM, as well as the incorporation of nanofillers in the polymeric matrix.

Abstract:Novel dibenzodioxane-containing dianhydride (MMBMDA) and diamine (FDBDA and MMBDA) monomers with sterically hindered contortion sites and pendent fluorene or trimethylbenzene moieties were prepared using 4-methylcatechol as a major reactant. High temperature polycondensation of these monomers and 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) enabled the synthesis of intrinsically microporous polyimides (PIM-PI) with adequately high molecular weights. The surface area, fractional free volume, and d-spacing of these PIM-PIs were 385–543 m2 g-1, 0.179-0.212, and 0.672-0.683 nm, respectively, following the order of MMBMDA-FDBDA > MMBMDA-MMBDA > 6FDA-FDBDA > 6FDA-MMBDA. Moreover, the high rigidity of MMBMDA-based PIM-PIs induced the formation of ultramicropores (<0.7 nm), which enhanced their gas-sieving capability. The PIM-PIs developed in this study showed favorable O2/N2, CO2/N2, and CO2/CH4 separation performances because of their rigid, sterically hindered and contorted architectures. In particular, MMBMDA-FDBDA exhibited comparable gas separation performances to the benchmark PIM-1 membrane.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials constructed by polynuclear metal clusters and organic linkers. In recent years, research efforts have been switching from fundamental studies of MOFs to the exploration of engineered forms of MOFs for specific applications. Particularly, MOF-based membranes have been extensively studied for challenging molecular separations. The design of high-quality MOF membranes with highly efficient separation performance requires controllable manipulation and functionalization of MOF structures. In-situ modification and post-synthetic modification (PSM) are two efficient ways to manipulate MOF structures. Comparing these two approaches, PSM is more appealing as it allows for the functionalization of diverse MOFs, while the in-situ modification is limited to a restricted set of MOF candidates. This review focuses on recent advances in the post-synthetic modification of MOFs and their membranes for enhanced molecular separation applications. Different categories of post-synthetic modification methods are summarized. Representative examples of post-synthetically modified polycrystalline MOF membranes and MOF composite membranes are discussed. Furthermore, the significant contributions of post-synthetic modification to the enhanced molecular separation performance of MOF membranes are highlighted. Last but not least, challenges and opportunities for bringing MOF membranes from the laboratory scale to practical separation applications are presented to guide the future development of MOF membranes with industrially attractive molecular separation performance.

Abstract:Membrane separation is an energy-saving technology for carbon capture. However, it is subjected to permeability-selectivity trade-off limitation. Although chemical functionalization is proposed to boost separation efficiency, controlling sorption-diffusion process remains extremely challenging. In this study, a facile, controllable, and versatile chemical vapor amination strategy is reported to simultaneously tune gas sorption and diffusion in polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM)-based membranes for improving carbon capture performance. Through simple exposure in amine vapors under mild conditions, nucleophilic substitution of amines toward ether and halogen groups induce grafting, ring-opening, terminal replacement, chain-scission, and crosslinking of PIM-1, thereby underpinning CO2-philicity and tailoring passageway. The prepared CO2-philic membranes exhibit substantially improved CO2/N-2 selectivity over 30.8, about 226% as that of original one, accompanied by high CO2 permeability of 2590 Barrer, which can surpass the trade-off upper bound of polymer membranes. Post-modification of PIM-1 and simultaneously in situ synthesis of porous polymer networks into PIM-1 matrix to enhance CO2 separation performance

Abstract:Post-modification of the chemical structures can be used to tailor the properties of polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1), which shows promise for application of PIM-1 gas separation membrane. Methane sulfonic acid (MSA) is capable of hydrolyzing and crosslinking nitrile groups of PIM-1 to form carboxylic acid-contained and triazine groups crosslinked PIM-1 (cPIM-1), and simultaneously catalyze in situ synthesis of porous polymer networks (PPNs) in PIM-1 matrix. These reactions were carried out at the same time by a one-step method. Characterization of hydrolysis and crosslinking process of nitrile groups in PIM-1 was performed by ATR, XPS, solubility, and 1H NMR analysis. MSA catalyzed synthetic approach of PPNs includes the trimerization of three acetyl groups and involves a coupled process of polymerization and membrane architecture formation. Finally, the process of crosslinking and hydrolysis can provide enhanced gas pair selectivity of PIM-1 membrane (cPIM-1) while the gas permeability of the membranes (cPIM-1/PPNs) can be increased by the incorporation of PPNs microstructure networks. As a result, the optimal cPIM-1/PPNs showed Roberson's 2008 upper bound separation performance for CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2. The cPIM-1/PPN2-3% membrane demonstrated the best CO2 comprehensive separation performance with the permeability of almost 11511 Barrer, with ideal selectivity of 24.3 and 22.2 for CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 respectively. Furthermore, the cPIM-1/PPNs membranes show excellent anti-aging properties. This indicates that MSA-catalyzed hydrolysis, crosslinking and in situ synthesis PPNs can effectively adjust the topological structure of PIM-1 membrane for CO2 separation.

An Atomistic Simulation Study on POC/PIM Mixed-Matrix Membranes for Gas Separation

Abstract:Although high flux membranes are indispensable to membrane-based gas separation technologies, enhancing membrane permeability proves to be difficult due to the trade-off between permeability and gas selectivity. Mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) is a promising route to break this limitation. Nevertheless, in sharp contrast to a myriad of experimental studies, only a few simulation studies on MMMs are available. In this work, we describe a molecular dynamics simulation scheme to model MMMs, including membrane construction through cyclic annealing and gas permeation simulation through a constant pressure difference setup. MMMs based on a typical porous organic cage (CC3) and a typical polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) are probed. It is shown that discrete CC3 molecules mixed in PIM-1 afford no permeability enhancement, as the introduction of discrete CC3 changes neither the packing structure nor the gas movement mechanism. The presence of CC3 crystals in MMMs can promote gas permeability with a minor selectivity compromise by virtue of high gas diffusivities in CC3 crystals and high gas adsorption in PIM-1. In addition, perturbed packing of PIM-1 chains near an extremely flat CC3 surface gives rise to modestly large pores in the interface, which favors gas permeation. These understandings obtained from molecular models are useful for the rational design of advanced mixed-matrix membranes.
