Abstract:In most chemical plants, it is hard to utilize/recycle the high-salinity wastewater containing chloride and sulfate because the separation of them is rarely cheap and waste-free. Herein, an efficient separation process was proposed via the complexation and the extraction of ZnXn(n-2)-. Because of the characteristics of different ions, halide ions exhibited regular complexation properties and extraction ratios. The extraction efficiencies of all halides were enhanced owing to the formation of ZnXn(n-2)-. More interestingly, 82.6% of F-, 88.6% of Br- and 99.6% of I- could be selectively extracted even in chloride-riched solution with a limited Zn2+ dosage and only about 16.3% of chloride was extracted at the same time. High selectivity would promise wide applications, such as removing fluoride ions from electrolyte solutions, recovering bromide and iodide ions from brine resources, and separating different halide ions, etc. As the model, the extraction of chloride was investigated to reveal the key factors and the mechanism. The extraction efficiency increased with increases in the phase volume ratio and the zinc/chloride molar ratio. After a two-stage counter-current extraction, the concentration of Cl in the raffinate could be reduced from 100 g/L to 10 g/L. Chloride was mainly extracted as ZnCl3-, as predicted by theoretical calculations and confirmed experimentally.
