Abstract:Background: In this work, we demonstrate the pratical application of machine learning in analyzing patient health exams to predict hypertension risk. Hypertension is one of the leading modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases in China. Methodologies: The study cohort included 2,241 hypertension patients and randomly selected 2,000 normal subjects (age > 40, 49% female, 51% male) having health exam between 2010 and 2014 from the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, one of the top 20 largest hospitals in China. We analyzed hypertension risks in three steps. First, we determined which lab test results are significantly associated with hypertension using student t-test. Second, we predicted hypertension patients using deep-learning neural network. Third, we proposed a predictive risk score to estimate how long a subject would be diagnosed with hypertension following the health exam. Results: We identified 34 health exam lab tests which have significant associations with hypertension (Figure 1). The classification models achieved a prediction test accuracy of 99.9% and a positive predictive value of 97% with 10-fold cross-validation. The risk score clearly shows the separation of future hypertension diagnosis (p-value < 10 -6 ) in Figure 1. Discussion and Conclusions: Our work shows that health exam lab test could effectively help data scientists to develop novel predictive models and identifyfuture hypertension risk. Since the analysis only uses lab exam data, which is affordable and frequently collected, we believe that our model and findings could be further validated and improved in other cohorts, e.g, in the United States.
