Abstract:Insufficient penile erection to facilitate vaginal penetration is a medical condition referred to as erectile dysfunction (ED). By the year 2025, the number of ED cases across the world is expected to reach 322 million. There are numerous publications and studies in the field of ED over the past decades. Our aim is to comprehensively analyze the global scientific outputs of ED research and show the trends and hotspots in ED research. Data of publications were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection. We used CiteSpace IV and Excel 2016 to analyze literature information, including journals, countries/regions, institutes, authors, citation reports, and research frontiers. Until October 26, 2018, a total of 8880 papers in ED research were identified as published between 2008 and 2018. Journal of Sexual Medicine published the most articles. The United States contributed the most publications and occupied leading positions in H-index value and the number of ESI top papers. Maggi M owned the highest co-citations. The keyword "Oxidative stress" ranked first in the research front-line. The amount of articles published in ED research has been stable from 2008 to 2018. The United States showed enormous progress in ED research, and is still the dominant country. Oxidative stress, vardenafil, and late-onset hypogonadism were the latest research frontiers and should be paid more attention.

Abstract:Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent condition affecting over 150 million men worldwide. While there is a wealth of publications and research in the field of ED, there is a noticeable scarcity of bibliometric analyses of the literature on this topic. This study aims to analyze the scientific activity and research trends related to ED. We conducted a comprehensive search of the Scopus database to identify potentially relevant studies on ED published from 1841 to November 12, 2022. We used the primary keywords "erectile dysfunction" or "impotence" for the search. Several software tools were employed for data calculation and visualization. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear correlation statistical test were used. The main outcomes of interest included the number of publications, year of publication, document type, country of origin, affiliated organizations, and journals of publication. Our search revealed a total of 30,634 publications with a cumulative 657,894 citations in the field of ED literature over the past 18 decades. "Original Article" emerged as the most common document type, accounting for 22,292 records. The United States stood out as the most prolific country, contributing 8809 publications (25% of the total). The University of California in the United States led in research output with 581 publications. Notably, the 'Journal of Sexual Medicine' was the leading publication source, with 1715 publications associated with it. Clinicians and experts in sexual medicine should take authorship trends into account when they review ED articles to improve patient care. A primary strength of our study is that it presents a comprehensive bibliometric review of ED reports spanning 18 decades. Results are limited to ED literature published in the sexual medicine journals and the urology analyzed. The publication volume on ED literature witnessed a substantial increase from 1975 to 2022. The findings from this bibliometric analysis provide valuable insights into research hotspots and emerging trends in the field of ED, which can aid researchers in gaining a better understanding of this topic.

[Status quo of ED-related studies in China: A bibliometric analysis]

Abstract:Objective: To summarize and visualize the status quo, future hotspots and development trend of ED-related researches in China through bibliometric analysis. Methods: We searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) and the database of Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) for ED-related studies published in China from January 1, 2010 to August 14, 2023. Using the CiteSpace and VOSviewer softwares, we bibliometrically analyzed and visualized the related journals, regions, institutions, authors, key words, co-citations and other indexes of the identified studies. Results: A total of 2,465 ED-related studies were retrieved, with an increasing number of publications year by year, relatively more in the southeast region, with Sun Yat-sen University ranking the first in the number of published articles (n = 169), LIU Jihong (n = 73), WANG Tao (n = 71) and JIANG Rui (n = 49) as the top three prolific core authors. The first two Chinese journals with the most ED-related publications were Chinese Journal of Andrology (n = 320) and Journal of Sexual Medicine (n = 128), and the latter was also the mostly cited (n = 5 060). Keyword co-occurrence analysis showed that the highest-frequency Chinese terms included impotence, anxiety, andrology, expert consensus, experience of famous doctors, acupuncture, Earthworm protein (Chinese) and hypertension, and the English terms included erectile dysfunction, apoptosis, inflammation, fibrosis, risk and women. Conclusion: Recent years have wit-nessed a rapid development in ED-related studies in China, with the risk factors and patho-genic mechanisms of ED as hot topics. PDE5 inhibitors and adipose-derived stem cells for the treatment of ED have attracted long and continuous attention and will remain an important target of future research.

Abstract:This paper investigates the trends in erectile dysfunction research by integrating individual keywords such as COVID-19, mental health, psychiatry, and drug use. The study spans a six-year period from September 21, 2017, to September 21, 2023, and utilizes resources from the National Library of Medicine. For instance, the quantity of relevant documents is determined using the Google search engine. A custom date range can be set on the browser via tools, and the search is limited to the nih.gov site domain. The phrase-site search command used is executed with "erectile dysfunction" COVID-19 site:nih.gov. The result revealed that from Sept 2021 to 2022, research on COVID-19 and erectile dysfunction spiked. However, the previous year saw a rise in studies linking drugs or mental health with erectile dysfunction. Meanwhile, psychiatry-focused publications have consistently grown. The time-series trends of erectile dysfunction linked to COVID-19 are substantiated by a comprehensive literature review.

Abstract:ObjectivesTo identify the cooperation of authors, countries, institutions and explore the hot topics’ prospects regarding research of prostate diseases and erectile dysfunction (ED).MethodsPublications on research of prostate diseases and ED were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Bibliometric analyses were performed using VOSviewer and CiteSpace software. Network maps were generated to evaluate the collaborations between different authors, countries, institutions, and keywords.ResultsA total of 2,599 articles related to study of prostate diseases and ED were identified. We observed gradually increasing in the number of publications from 1998 to 2016, and the trend was to be relatively stable in the past 3 years. Journal of Sexual Medicine (243 papers) owned the highest number of publications and Journal of Urology was the most co-cited journal. Mulhall John P (52 papers) was the top most productive authors and Mcvary Kebin T with the largest numbers of citations (1,589 co-citations) during the past decades. There were active collaborations among the top authors. The USA was the leading contributor in this field with 1,078 papers. Active cooperation between countries and between institutions was observed. The main hot topics included matters related to erectile dysfunction, prostate cancer, quality-of-life, radical prostatectomy, sexual function, and BPH.ConclusionBibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the development of scientific literature, allowing relevant authors and research teams to recognize the current research status in this field and at the same time provide a reference for formulating future research directions.

Abstract:The incidence of premature ejaculation (PE) has been on the rise over the years. Thus, significant research efforts have been directed toward understanding the pathogenesis and hence treatment of PE. Here, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the worldwide trends in research outputs in the field of PE. This study investigated the universal findings of previous PE studies and the trending issues surrounding the condition. We employed the Web of Science Core Collection for data collection. The Excel (2016) and CiteSpace IV were used for information analysis. The information was categorized using journal names, institutions, research frontiers, citation reports, regions/countries, and authors. A sum of 886 publications concerning PE between 2008 and 2018 were identified as of July 6, 2019. The highest number of publications was identified in the Journal of Sexual Medicine published. The United States of America (USA) had the highest number of publications and H-index value. The highest co-citations were from Waldinger MD. The most common keyword was ‘drug treatment’. A steady pattern was observed for PE publications done between the period of 2008–2018. Thus, the USA is at the forefront of research on PE research. The interesting advanced research frontiers were drug treatment, circumcision, and sertraline.

Abstract:Background: The incidence of prostate cancer (PC) has increased in recent years. Erectile dysfunction (ED) after prostate cancer treatment has aroused extensive attention. Bibliometric analysis was designed to investigate a systematic understanding of developments between PC and ED during the past 20 years. Methods: Literatures on PC and ED were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database (WoSCC). By using the VOS viewer and CiteSpace software to analysis the metrics of bibliometric literature, such as number of articles, journals, countries, institutions, authors, keywords and associated information. The number of publications per year was statistically analysed and plotted thorough Microsoft Office. In addition, Pajek software was used to adjust the visual map. Results: A total of 2332 screened articles were included in the analysis. The Journal of Sexual Medicine, ranking first among the analysed journals, published 235 articles. The United States and Canada were leaders in PC and ED research. There is a need to strengthen inter-agency cooperation in this area of research on a global scale. Mulhall JP, as the most prolific author in this area of research, published 80 articles. And Rosen RC was the author with the most co-citated (693 co-citated). The main research focus on the prevention, treatment and management of ED after PC treatment in this field through the keyword analysis. Conclusions: Research on PC and ED is expected to expand further worldwide. We found ED, as new sustainable treatment modalities, scientific postoperative management and psychological interventions for patients, may become the research hotspots and should be closely concerned in this study.

Abstract:Background: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus-induced erectile dysfunction (DMED) has recently increased, which has prompted numerous DMED studies. Here, we conduct a bibliometric analysis of relevant literature in the field of DMED and to discuss the research hotspots and future development directions. Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection database was searched for literature on DMED, and literature characterization including the number of articles, journals, countries/regions, institutions, authors, keywords, and other information was performed using VOS viewer and CiteSpace software. In addition, Pajek software was used for visual map adjustment, and GraphPad Prism was used to generate line graphs. Results: A total of 804 articles concerning DMED were included in this study. The Journal of Sexual Medicine issued the most documents(92 articles). The United States and China were in the leading position in the field of DMED research, and cross-institutional collaboration on DMED research worldwide needs to be further strengthened. Ryu JK were the authors with the highest number of documents issued (22 articles) while Bivalacqua TJ was the author with the most co-citated(249 co-citated). The keywords analysis shows that the main research hotspots in the field of DMED were mechanism discussions and disease treatment and management. Conclusions: Global research on DMED is expected to increase further. The investigation of the mechanism of DMED and the exploration of new therapeutic means and targets are the focus of future research.

Abstract:Introduction: Diabetic erectile dysfunction (DMED) refers to erectile dysfunction secondary to diabetes. Erectile dysfunction is characterized by a persistent inability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient to permit satisfactory sexual activity. Methods: Based on the Web of Science core collection database, we firstly analyzed the quantity and quality of publications in the field of DMED, secondly profiled the publishing groups in terms of country, institution, author's publication and cooperation network, and finally sorted out and summarized the hot topics of research. Results: From 2001 to 2022, a total of 1,403 articles relating to this topic were published in 359 journals. They represent the global research status, potential hotspots, and future research directions. The number of DMED-related publications and citations has steadily increased over the few past decades. Academic institutions from Europe and the United States have played a leading role in DMED research. The country, institution, journal, and author with the most publications were the United States (294), INHA University (39), the Journal of Sexual Medicine (156), and Ryu, Ji-Kan (29), respectively. The most common keywords were erectile dysfunction (796), men (256), diabetes (254), diabetes mellitus (239), prevalence (180), corpus cavernosum (171), dysfunction (155), mellitus (154), nitric-oxide synthase (153), and expression (140). The main keyword-based research topics and hotspots in the DMED field were oral sildenafil, smooth muscle relaxation, nitric oxide synthase, gene therapy, metabolic syndrome, cavernous nerve injury, stem cell, and penile prosthesis. Discussion: The terms oral sildenafil, smooth muscle relaxation, nitric oxide synthase, gene therapy, metabolic syndrome, cavernous nerve injury, stem cell, and penile prosthesis will be at the forefront of DMED-related research.

Abstract:Background: The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has brought indelible harms to the world and aroused great concern worldwide. This paper aims to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on sexual function using bibliometrics, and summarize research hotspots in this field. Methods: Relevant publications concerning the impact of COVID-19 on sexual function in the Web of Science collection database (WoSCC) between January 1, 2020 and March 12, 2022 were screened and analyzed by bibliometric analysis using the visualization software CiteSpace and VOSviewer. Results: Of the 1,054 publications screened, the United States (US) contributed the most (398/37.8%), followed by the United Kingdom (UK) (119/11.3%). Among all institutions, the University of Toronto in Canada enjoyed the largest number of publications (30), and Johns Hopkins University in the US enjoyed the highest frequency of citation (235). The journal INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH AND PUBLIC HEALTH published the largest number of studies in this field (31), and the most-cited journal was LANCET . "Chow, Eric," "Ong, Jason J," and "Stephenson, Rob" tied for first place in publications (8), and "Fish, Jessica N." enjoyed the highest number of citations (99). Burstness analysis of references and keywords showed that the developing research trends in this field mainly focused on "sexual transmission" and "angiotensin converting-enzyme 2 (ACE2)" during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: The impact of COVID-19 on sexual function remains an urgent concern at present, and the management of sexual health during the pandemic needs to be further improved. More frequent and deeper cooperation between countries and institutions is required in future. Meanwhile, searching for more evidence on whether COVID-19 can achieve sexual transmission and the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the impact of COVID-19 on sexual function remains a focus of research in the coming years.

Global research trends in sexual health care: A bibliometric and visualized study

Abstract:No Patient or Public Contribution, because the relevant data of this article comes from the literature database. Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the trends and research status of sexual healthcare. Methods: We searched the Web of Science database for relevant articles concerning sexual healthcare, published between 2009 and 31 December 2022. Data collected include: the number of publications, authors, journals, countries, institutions, keywords. VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used to conduct the bibliometric study and visualise the analysis. Results: A total of 1450 publications were included. The number of publications on sexual healthcare shows a fluctuating upward trend, and a stable core group of authors has been formed. The Journal of Clinical Nursing published the most articles on sexual healthcare (140 publications). The United States of America published the most articles (723, 49.86%). The research institution with the highest number of publications is the University of São Paulo. According to the keyword, timeline view and prominence mapping analysis, we believe that 'Female sexual health', 'HIV', 'LGBT' and 'Sexual Healthcare Services' may be new research hotspots in the field of sexual healthcare. Conclusion: This study describes the research status of sexual healthcare research over the past 14 years. The findings of this study can provide helpful reference and guidance for the development trend and research direction of sexual healthcare.

Abstract:Bibliometric analyses serve to identify influential articles that have shaped medical practice and fostered new research ideas. Over the past decade, research in andrology has witnessed exponential growth, with an increasing number of academic publications, collaborations, and research innovations. However, there is a lack of literature that has identified the top-cited andrology articles. We conducted a bibliometric analysis to identify the top 1000 citations in andrology journals, with a focus on the top funding agencies, authors, institutions, countries/regions, and journals. To perform this analysis, we identified the top-cited articles in andrology journals as indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection. From 2013 through 2022, we found a total of 9827 articles published in andrology journals. The top publishers included "Andrology," the "Asian Journal of Andrology," and "Andrologia." The top affiliations contributing to research include the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (269 publications), Egyptian Knowledge Bank (EKB) (265), and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (202). Funding was primarily provided by notable agencies such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China (905 grants), United States Department of Health Human Services (321), and National Institutes of Health (NIH USA) (317). The present bibliometric analysis highlights andrology research from 2013 through 2022, offering key insights into leading contributors, influential authors, prominent funding sources, and major trends in the field.

Abstract:The treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) using penile prosthesis implantation (PPI) has recently garnered significant interest, but reports of bibliometric analyses of studies on PPI have yet to appear. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to use visualization techniques to statistically and qualitatively assess the state of knowledge, current research topics, and trends in this field. The Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-E) from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) was searched for publications about PPI from the inception of the database to 2023. VOSviewer (version 1.6.19), CiteSpace (version 6.2. R2), and Excel (version 2021) were used for the data analysis. The results show a total of 1015 original articles and reviews on PPI published over this nearly 50 years, with an increasing trend in the number of studies published each year. The United States is the country with the most published studies ( n = 578). Mayo Clinic is the organization with the most publications overall ( n = 46). The Journal of Sexual Medicine has the most publications ( n = 184). The most prolific author is Wilson, Steven K ( n = 31). The most commonly used terms were erectile dysfunction ( n = 509), penile prosthesis ( n = 332), implantation ( n = 207), satisfaction ( n = 201), surgery ( n = 200), infection ( n = 134), outcomes ( n = 128), Peyronie's disease ( n = 121), men ( n = 115), and experience ( n = 109). Current research focuses on four main areas: complications of PPI, the current status of inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP), the use of PPI in radical prostatectomy and Peyronie's disease populations, and patient satisfaction after PPI. Improving patient satisfaction with PPI through improved mechanical design and surgical techniques is a key concern for future research.

Epidemiological Changes of ED Patients: Investigations in 11 Chinese Cities During the Past 5 Years

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the epidemiological changes of erectile dysfunction (ED) patients in the past five years.METHODS:In 2003 and 2008, we conducted two questionnaire investigations on the epidemiological changes of ED outpatients in 11 Chinese cities in such aspects as age, disease course, ED severity, smoking and drinking habits, accompanying hypertension, diabetes and coronary heart disease (CHD), and sexual intercourse satisfaction.RESULTS:According to the valid copies of the questionnaire collected (808 in 2003 and 858 in 2008), the age pattern of the ED patients hardly changed in the past five years, over 60% aged 30 - 50 years. Compared with the results obtained in 2003, the second investigation showed obvious increases in the following numbers of the ED patients: by 13% in those with longer disease courses (5 - 10 yr), from 24.1 to 42.9% in those with moderate ED, from 20.4 to 29.9% in those with severe ED, by at least 10% in those with smoking and drinking habits, from 11.5 to 16.2% in those with hypertension, from 9.4 to 13.5% in those with diabetes, and from 57.6 to 73.3% in those without sexual satisfaction, while the number of those with CHD did not change significantly.CONCLUSION:Increased unhealthy living habits and erectile function impairing diseases have added to the incidence and severity of ED. There is still much work to be done in the prevention and early treatment of ED.
Research trends of prostatitis over past 20 years: A bibliometric analysis

Abstract:In the past two decades, thousands of documents in the field of prostatitis have been published. This bibliometric analysis aimed to assess the characteristics, hotspots and frontiers trend of global scientific output on prostatitis. With the trend of moderate growth, altogether 2,423 papers were reviewed. The leading role of the United States in global prostatitis research was obvious, while China had developed rapidly in recent years. Queen's University and JOURNAL OF UROLOGY were the most prolific affiliation and journal respectively. Nickel, J. C made the greatest contribution to the field of prostatitis. Five hotspots have been confirmed: (a) male infertility associated with prostatitis and the molecular mechanisms; (b) diagnosis and treatment of prostatitis; (c) inflammation, pain and bladder irritation symptoms; (d) relationship between chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer; (e) epidemiology, complications of prostatitis and improvement of acupuncture. This bibliometric analysis reveals that the international cooperation was becoming more and more close. Hotspot analysis shows that the molecular mechanism of prostatitis will be a hotspot in the future, mainly focussing on inflammatory immunity and oxidative stress.

Abstract:The treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) has been revolutionized during the last 2 decades with several treatment options now available. Most of these treatments are associated with high efficacy rates and favourable safety profiles. A MEDLINE search was undertaken to evaluate all currently available data on treatment modalities for ED. Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil) are currently the first-choice treatment option for ED by most physicians and patients. In addition, several new PDE5 inhibitors are candidates to enter the market in forthcoming years (avanafil, udenafil, SLx-2101, mirodenafil [SK3530]). However, obvious pharmacokinetic differences that result in a faster time-to-onset, longer half-life time and better safety profile are required for these drugs to be considered a truly better option for patients. Other molecules in development include selective dopamine, glutamate, serotonin and melanocortin receptor agonists, guanylate cyclase activators, rho-kinase inhibitors and hexarelin analogues, while the first trials on gene therapy and tissue engineering for reconstruction of corporal tissue are under way. Patients must be aware of all treatment options since no ideal treatment exists. It is expected that the availability of drugs with different mechanisms of action will allow physicians to offer more personalized medicine to their patients in the future. The development and adaptation of a patient-centred care model in sexual medicine will increase the efficacy and safety of current and future treatments.

Abstract:Objectives: We aimed to analyze the trend change of the most popular Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibitors (PDE5i) over time and geography by using Google Trends (GT) data in 10 years period and COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods: GT is able to generate a "line-graph", showing how interest has increased or decreased over a period within specific territories. The search values for specific terms are indexed as relative search volume (RSV), which is presented on a scale from 0-100. Avarage annual percentage change (AAPC) and RSV were analyzed to evaluate gain or loss of interest in trends. Search terms were generated for Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved PDE5i; tadalafil, sildenafil, vardenafil, avanafil, and their most-used brand names. The data was within "worldwide" from 1 January 2010, to 31 December 2020, using the ''global'' query category. Results: The overall interest in PDE5i has doubled. Sildenafil has become the most trend PDE5i of today with a regular increase (AAPC: 0.016, p < 0.01). Although the search trend of tadalafil remained almost constant until 2014, the rate of increase in the last 6 years raised and tadalafil has become the 2nd most popular PDE5i recently (AAPC: 0.007, p < 0.01). For vardenafil there has been a decreased interest (AAPC: -0.009, p < 0.01). There is no significant change in avanafil trend (AAPC: 0.000, p: 0.5). All PDE5i interest on GT decreased notably from February to June 2020. But after June, search trends reached the level before the COVID-19 period in a month. Conclusions: These findings show us, with its increasing prevalence, erectile dysfunction (ED) has become a major public health problem. People from different geographies search the internet for ED treatment options. Patients should be informed that ED may be the first sign of many comorbid diseases, and patients with ED should be referred to a health institution for diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract:Significant scientific advances during the past 3 decades have deepened our understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of penile erection. A critical evaluation of the current state of knowledge is essential to provide perspective for future research and development of new therapies.To develop an evidence-based, state-of-the-art consensus report on the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction (ED).Consensus process over a period of 16 months, representing the opinions of 12 experts from seven countries.Expert opinion was based on the grading of scientific and evidence-based medical literature, internal committee discussion, public presentation, and debate.ED occurs from multifaceted, complex mechanisms that can involve disruptions in neural, vascular, and hormonal signaling. Research on central neural regulation of penile erection is progressing rapidly with the identification of key neurotransmitters and the association of neural structures with both spinal and supraspinal pathways that regulate sexual function. In parallel to advances in cardiovascular physiology, the most extensive efforts in the physiology of penile erection have focused on elucidating mechanisms that regulate the functions of the endothelium and vascular smooth muscle of the corpus cavernosum. Major health concerns such as atherosclerosis, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) have become well integrated into the investigation of ED.Despite the efficacy of current therapies, they remain insufficient to address growing patient populations, such as those with diabetes and MetS. In addition, increasing awareness of the adverse side effects of commonly prescribed medications on sexual function provides a rationale for developing new treatment strategies that minimize the likelihood of causing sexual dysfunction. Many basic questions with regard to erectile function remain unanswered and further laboratory and clinical studies are necessary.

Abstract:Vascular endothelial is considered to be a key factor in the pathogenesis of erectile dysfunction (ED). The purpose is to reveal the research trend of the field of ED and vascular endothelium. In addition, the goal is to discover the role and mechanism of vascular endothelium in ED. Bibliometrics and visualization methods based on CiteSpace were selected. We conducted the co-authorship analysis of countries, institutions and authors, co-occurrence analysis of keywords, and co-citation analysis of literature and authors through CiteSpace 6.1.R3. 1431 articles from Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) were included in the analysis from 1991 to 2022. We found some influential and cutting-edge nodes in each map, including countries, institutions, authors, articles, etc. Stem cell, therapy, oxidative stress, cavernous nerve injury, radical prostatectomy, fibrosis, erectile function, mesenchymal stem cell, and apoptosis may be hot keywords. In conclusion, the efficacy and mechanisms of stem cells and their derivatives in the treatment of diabetes (DM) ED and cavernous nerve injury (CNI) ED are the future research trends. Stem cells therapy for ED is a hot spot in this field, which side notes that stem cells may work mainly through improving endothelial function. Vascular endothelial cells and VEGF may repair nerve and cavernous smooth muscle directly or indirectly, and finally polish up erectile function.

Abstract:Introduction: The bibliometric analysis aims to identify research trends in estrogen receptor (ERs) and progesterone receptor (PRs) in prostate cancer (PCa), and also discuss the hotspots and directions of this field. Methods: 835 publications were sourced from the Web of Science database (WOS) from 2003 to 2022. Citespace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix were used for the bibliometric analysis. Results: The number of published publications increased in early years, but declined in the last 5 years. The United States was the leading country in citations, publications, and top institutions. Prostate and Karolinska Institutet were the most publications of journal and institution, respectively. Jan-Ake Gustafsson was the most influential author based on the number of citations/publications. The most cited paper was "Estrogen receptors and human disease" by Deroo BJ, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. The most frequently used keywords were PCa (n = 499), gene-expression (n = 291), androgen receptor (AR) (n = 263), and ER (n = 341), while ERb (n = 219) and ERa (n = 215) further emphasized the importance of ER. Conclusions: This study provides useful guidance that ERa antagonists, ERb agonists, and the combination of estrogen with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) will potentially serve as a new treatment strategy for PCa. Another interesting topic is relationships between PCa and the function and mechanism of action of PRs subtypes. The outcome will assist scholars in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the current status and trends in the field, and provide inspiration for future research.
