Abstract:A narrow-band-gap molecular acceptor, IPIC-4Cl, featuring an indacenobis(dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]pyrrol) (INP) core with 2-butyl-1-octyl side chains and chlorinated (dicyanomethylidene)-indan-1-one (IC) as electron-accepting end group, has been rationally designed as nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) for organic solar cells (OSCs). The impact of chlorination on the acceptor unit is revealed by a comparison study with two counterpart NFAs bearing a fluorinated or nonhalogenated IC unit. The synergetic photophysical and morphological analyses reveal that PBDB-T:IPIC-4Cl blend possesses efficient exciton dissociation and charge collection integrated with higher crystallinity and optimized phase separation. Consequently, the OSCs constructed by PBDB-T:IPIC-4Cl obtain a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.4% with an extremely low energy loss of 0.51 eV. Abstract:The development of organic solar cells (OSCs) based on non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) is a potential way to conquer the dilemma of OSCs based on fullerene derivatives acceptors (FM). In this article, four promising NFAs, two excellent polymers and eight donor/acceptor (D/A) interfaces based on NFAs and polymers are theoretically investigated using DFT and TD-DFT. Geometric structures, electronic and optical absorption properties of NFAs and polymers were studied in details. By calculating the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) levels, exciton binding energies, optical absorptions and analyzing density-of-states (DOS) and charge difference density (CDD), the roles of NFAs (or polymers) in the FMO energy levels and optical absorptions of D/A interfaces were revealed, and the relationship between exciton binding energy and characteristic of charge separation was uncovered. The obtained charge separation/recombination rates of D/A interfaces prove that all designed D/A interfaces have great potentials for application in OSCs, and this work of optical absorption of D/A interfaces under external electric fields offers a considerable method for tuning the performance of OSC device. We hope our investigation can provide a useful guideline for enhancing the performance of OSCs.

Abstract:Great progress in organic solar cells (OSCs) has been recently achieved owing to the advent of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). Indeed, low-bandgap NFAs ranging from 1.3 to 1.6 eV with broad absorption and easily tunable energy levels can utilize more solar radiation and maintain a small voltage loss when paired with suitable donors. Efficient OSCs are dependent on the good compatibility between donor and acceptor materials, active layer morphology control, and device engineering. In this review, we summarize some design and synthesis strategies for NFAs, achieving low bandgap and high power conversion efficiency. We also propose solutions toward innovative materials and device engineering to advance the development and applications of OSCs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Near-Infrared Electron Acceptors with Unfused Architecture for Efficient Organic Solar Cells.

Abstract:The absorption of nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) at near-infrared (NIR) regions is crucial for obtaining high current densities in organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, two narrow-band gap NFAs with unfused backbones possessing broad (600-900 nm) and strong absorption are developed by the conjugation of a benzothiadiazole core to halogenated end groups through a cyclopentadithiophene bridge. Compared with the fluorinated counterpart BCDT-4F, the chlorinated NFA BCDT-4Cl shows stronger J-aggregation and closer molecular packing, leading to an optimized blend morphology when paired with the polymer donor, PBDB-T. Thus, an obvious improvement in external quantum efficiency response was obtained for BCDT-4Cl-based OSCs, presenting a higher efficiency of 12.10% than those (9.65%) based on BCDT-4F. This work provides a design strategy for NIR acceptors in the combination of electron-deficient core and halogenated terminal in unfused backbones, which results in not only fine-tuning the optoelectronic properties but also simplifying the synthetic complexities of molecules.

Abstract:Two new non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have been synthesized for organic solar cell (OSC) applications. Isatin related weak electron withdrawing moieties were coupled with indacenodithiophene to give new NFAs with elevated energy levels, especially the LUMO levels. The NFAs were designed to pair with wide band-gap donor polymers for reducing energy loss (E-loss) and therefore achieving high open circuit voltages (V-oc) in organic solar cells. The OSC devices with the new NFAs as acceptors showed the V-oc as high as 1.18 V. The high open circuit voltages were achieved via small E-loss.

Abstract:Three low-bandgap nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) IDTO-T-4F, IDTO-Se-4F, and IDTO-TT-4F with extended conjugation length are designed and synthesized. Various pi-spacers, thiophene, selenophene, and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene are incorporated to extend the conjugated length and enhance the backbone planarity via noncovalent O center dot center dot center dotS or O center dot center dot center dot Se interactions. These NFAs exhibit strong light absorption in the range of 600-900 nm with narrow bandgaps between 1.38 and 1.45 eV. By blending with a wide-bandgap donor material PBDB-T, organic solar cells (OSCs) based on these NFAs all yield high efficiency over 10% with low energy losses ranging from 0.52 to 0.59 eV. Importantly, as a result of relatively high lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level, large hole and electron mobility in blend film, and low charge carrier recombination loss, optimized devices based on IDTO-T-4F exhibit a large open-circuit voltage of 0.864 V, a high short-circuit current density of 20.12 mA cm(-2), and a notable fill factor of 72.7%, leading to an impressive efficiency of 12.62%, which represents the best performance for NFA OSCs using noncovalent interactions in acceptor molecule design. The results indicate that optimizing the conjugation length and backbone planarity via intramolecular noncovalent O center dot center dot center dotS or O center dot center dot center dot Se interactions is a useful strategy for NFA materials invention toward high-performance solar cells.

Abstract:Two cheliforrn non-fullerene acceptors, DTPC-IC and DTPC-DFIC, based on a highly electron-rich core, dithienopicenocarbazole (DTPC), are synthesized, showing ultra-narrow bandgaps (as low as 1.21 eV). The two-dimensional nitrogen-containing conjugated DTPC possesses strong electron-donating Capability, which induces intense intramolecular charge transfer and intermolecular pi-pi stacking hi derived acceptors. The solar cell based on DTPC-DFIC and a spectrally complementary polymer donor, PTB7-Th, showed a high power conversion efficiency of 10.21% and an extremely low energy loss of 045 eV, which is the lowest among reported efficient OSCs.

Abstract:It is challenging to afford both high-performance and low-energy loss (E loss) organic solar cells (OSCs) based on near-infrared (NIR) non-fused ring electron acceptors (NFREAs) with ultra-narrow bandgap. Herein, three simple NFREAs (C6OT-4F, C6EDOT-4F and PDOT-4F) with absorption up to 1000 nm are developed by using alkoxy substituted thiophene derivatives core connected to fluorinated 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone (DFIC) terminals through 4H-cyclopenta[1,2-b:5,4-b’]dithiophene (CPDT) bridge. It is found that fine tuning central thiophene derivatives can surprisingly lead to different photoelectric properties and the device performances. Compared with C6EDOT-4F and PDOT-4F, C6OT-4F shows a blue-shifted absorption and an elevated LUMO level, which is beneficial for boosting V oc. As a result, optimal devices based on PTB7-Th:C6OT-4F achieve a preferable efficiency of 9.83% with a low E loss of 0.47 eV, which is the lowest E loss among the NFREA-based OSCs with PCE >9% and optoelectronic response over 1000 nm. This work portrays the design concept of ultra-narrow bandgap NFREAs for efficient OSCs as well as low energy loss and exploration of semitransparent photoelectric devices.

Abstract:Nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) have contributed significantly to the progress of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, most NFAs feature a large fused-ring backbone, which usually requires a tedious multiple-step synthesis, and are not applicable to commercial applications. An alternative strategy is to develop nonfused NFAs, which possess synthetic simplicity and facile tunability in optoelectronic properties and solid-state microstructures. In this work, we report two nonfused NFAs, BTCIC and BTCIC-4Cl, based on an A-D-A'-D-A architecture, which possess the same electron-deficient benzothiadiazole central core but different electron-withdrawing terminal groups. The optical properties, energy levels, and molecular crystallinities were finely tuned by changing the terminal groups. Moreover, a decent power conversion efficiency of 9.3 and 10.5% has been achieved by BTCIC and BTCIC-4Cl, respectively, by blending them with an appropriate polymer donor. These results demonstrate the potential of A-D-A'-D-A type nonfused NFAs for high-performance OSCs. Further development of nonfused NFAs will be very fruitful by employing appropriate building blocks and via side-chain optimizations.

Abstract:Non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) with near-infrared (NIR) absorption show promising advantages in organic solar cells (OSCs). However, only a few NFAs can extend the absorption spectra over 1000 nm, and their photovoltaic performance has been unsatisfactory so far. To address this issue, three new NFAs, namely, 6-IFIC, 6-IF2F, and 6-IF4F, were synthesized by simultaneously introducing π-bridge units and different end groups. The π-bridge unit enlarges the conjugation and planarizes the molecular geometry, leading to intense absorption in the NIR range. The asymmetric configuration provides a large dipole moment, enhances the intermolecular interaction, and tunes the miscibility, consequently being beneficial for achieving a favorable morphology in OSCs. When blended with a donor polymer PTB7-Th, the 6-IF2F-based OSC yields the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.20%, which is among the highest PCEs based on NFAs with absorption over 1000 nm. More importantly, the absorption of the blend film provides a transparency window in the visible range from 400 and 650 nm. Therefore, the semitransparent OSCs based on these three NFAs can achieve over 28% average visible transmittance.

Abstract:One-dimensional ladder-type nonfullerene electron acceptors (NFAs) with large fused ring cores have been widely used in highly efficient organic solar cells (OSCs). Recent studies have demonstrated that small molecule acceptors with three-dimensional (3D) structures may exhibit low energy loss, and hence can lead to improved OSC performance. In this study, a new 3D NFA (99CZ-8F) with a 9,9′-bicarbazole backbone was designed, synthesized, and characterized, where two linear A-D-A architectures were linked by a single N–N bond. 99CZ-8F showed strong absorption in the range of 500–800 nm in the solid state, which is complementary to the absorption of the donor material PM6. After regulating the morphology of the active layer via binary solvent mixture, the optimized device exhibited a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.6 ± 0.1%, which is among the best reported values for 3D nonfullerene electron acceptor based OSCs.

Abstract:Solution processable thin-film organic solar cells (TFOSCs) have attracted a lot of research attention in the past few decades, in the search for low-cost, flexible, and portable solar panels. In light of this, tremendous progress has been made in terms of improving materials design, device architecture, and ease of device fabrication processes. The choice of the donor and acceptor materials in the preparation of a polymer blend bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar absorber medium is of great importance to the overall performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). The limitation in tuning the energy band structures of fullerene molecules poses significant challenges to the progress in BHJ organic solar cells. In an attempt to cater to the challenges, small-molecule non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) came into the OSC research space with the possibility of altering the optoelectronic properties of the polymer molecules that bring OSCs closer to the realization of full-scale commercialization. This review discusses the role of NFAs in improving film morphology and reducing energy loss in TFOSCs. The recent development in engineering non-fullerene acceptors for solar energy conversion is presented and discussed in terms of reducing energy loss, improving solar cell performances.

Abstract:The photovoltaic properties and energy loss of organic solar cells (OSCs) based on non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) are highly dependent on their molecular structures and morphologies. Herein, three NFAs, named Fʹ-2Cl, Fʹ-NCl and Fʹ-N2Cl with different end groups, are designed and synthesized by adopting π-extension and chlorination modifications. As a result, a favorable morphology is achieved in PM6:Fʹ-N2Cl based OSC and this system obtains the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.13% with a Jsc of 20.31 mA cm–2, an Voc of 0.927 V and a FF of 74.68%. Extending the conjugation of the end group narrows the molecular bandgaps and enabled a lower Eloss of 0.686 and 0.706 eV with nonradiative recombination losses of as low as 0.207 and 0.203 eV in Fʹ-NCl and Fʹ-N2Cl based devices, respectively. This work provides an efficient strategy to optimize the molecular structures of non-fullerene acceptors and further improve the properties of OSCs.

Abstract:The photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSC) has been compromised by the large energy losses. Non-radiative recombination energy losses (ΔE3) are the major factor in the energy loss but can be modulated by rational molecular design. Herein, three new non-fullerene acceptors (NFA), BTIC-4CN, BTIC-γ-2CN, and BTIC-γ-4CN were synthesized by the substitution of benzonitrile or benzodinitrile groups on the end groups. The photovoltaic performances were investigated by blending each acceptor with the complementary D18 donor polymer. Among them, BTIC-γ-2CN based devices exhibited the best PCE of 16.03% with a low non-radiative recombination energy loss of 0.191 eV. Ternary devices with NFAs of BTIC-γ-2CN and Y6 achieve an impressive high PCE of 17.61%. This good photovoltaic performance is attributed to the improved light absorption ability, optimized film morphology, and reduced non-radiative recombination loss. This work reveals the significance of substituting aryl nitrile groups on the end groups to simultaneously improve the photovoltaic performance with low nonradiative recombination losses.

Abstract:The design of narrow band gap (NBG) donors or acceptors and their application in organic solar cells (OSCs) are of great importance in the conversion of solar photons to electrons. Limited by the inevitable energy loss from the optical band gap of the photovoltaic material to the open-circuit voltage of the OSC device, the improvement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of NBG-based OSCs faces great challenges. A novel acceptor-donor-acceptor structured non-fullerene acceptor is reported with an ultra-narrow band gap of 1.24 eV, which was achieved by an enhanced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect. In the OSC device, despite a low energy loss of 0.509 eV, an impressive short-circuit current density of 25.3 mA cm-2 is still recorded, which is the highest value for all OSC devices. The high 10.9 % PCE of the NBG-based OSC demonstrates that the design and application of ultra-narrow materials have the potential to further improve the PCE of OSC devices.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have experienced rapid development and achieved significant breakthroughs in power conversion efficiencies owing to the emergence of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) with ladder-type multiple fused ring structures. However, the high synthetic complexity and production cost of multiple fused ring NFAs hinder the commercial prospects of OSCs. In this context, the development of non-fused ring acceptors (NFRAs) with simple structures and facile synthesis has been proposed. In this mini review, we summarize the important progress in this field spanning from molecular design strategies to structure-performance relationships. Ultimately, with the aim of realizing the practical application of NFRAs in OSCs, we discuss the current challenges and future directions in terms of achieving high performance and low synthetic complexity simultaneously. These discussions provide valuable insights into the development of new NFRAs.

Abstract:To reduce energy loss, planar acceptors with high LUMO levels were synthesized for wide-band-gap-polymer solar cells. A PCE of 4.05% was obtained with an active layer thickness of 35 nm and a transmittance of 76.1%.
