Three-dimensional Porous G-C3n4 for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:Herein, this work constructs a three-dimensional porous graphitic carbon nitride assembled by highly crystalline and ultrathin nanosheets (3D g-C3N4NS). 3D g-C3N4NS could directly split pure water into H-2 and O-2 with high evolution rate up to 101.4 and 49.1 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) under visible light, respectively, approximately 11.8 and 5.1 times higher than bulk g-C3N4 and g-C3N4NS. Besides, it achieves a notable apparent quantum yield of 1.4% at 420 nm, significantly superior to previously reported Pt/g-C3N4. The efficient activity of 3D g-C3N4NS is mainly attributed to its 3D interconnected open-framework, assembled by highly crystalline ultrathin nanosheet unit, provides a pathway for faster charge carrier transport. Moreover, benefitting from its 3D structure for preventing agglomeration of nanosheets, 3D g-C3N4NS is stable for more than 100 h of overall water splitting reaction.
Synthesis of a Cu2O/Carbon Film/NiCoB‐Grpahene Oxide Heterostructure As Photocathode for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:AbstractPhotoelectrochemical cells (PECs) for water splitting offer a promising way to convert solar energy into chemical energy. The electron transfer rate and surface‐catalyzed ability toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) play key roles in the efficiency of PEC water splitting. In this work, a photocathode based on a Cu2O/Carbon film/NiCoB‐graphene oxide (Cu2O/C/NiCoB−GO) heterostructure is fabricated. The thickness‐controllable carbon film served as the electron transport and protective layer with favorable optical properties. The NiCoB‐GO amorphous catalyst displays efficient performance towards HER in neutral condition. The optimized photocathode shows a PEC‐HER performance with a photocurrent density of −2.9 mA/cm2 at 0 V vs. RHE, and it also presents better stability than bare Cu2O. This work provides a novel heterostructure photocathode for promoting solar‐driven PEC water splitting efficiently.
Bimetallic Pd/Co Embedded in Two-Dimensional Carbon-Nitride for Z-Scheme Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Two-dimensional s-triazine-based graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) material with a band gap of 3.18 eV has emerged as a promising photocatalyst for water splitting. Here, we propose a Z-scheme photocatalyst by embedding Pd(OH)(2)- and Co(OH)(2)-groups in different parts of g-CN simultaneously. Density functional theory calculations show that it extends solar light absorption of g-CN into visible and infrared regions, realizes efficient charge separation, and can catalyze water splitting to produce O-2 and H-2, respectively. The staggered band alignment meets the requirement of the Z-scheme. Importantly, ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the photogenerated hole evolution accords with anticipation for subsequent water-splitting reactions. The computed Gibbs-free energy and overpotentials confirm the feasibility of hydrogen evolution reactions on the Co-centered fragment and oxygen evolution reactions on the Pd-centered fragment, respectively. It is expected that this new Z-scheme model designed on a single material platform may provide an alternative way for achieving efficient photodriven water splitting.
Water-Assisted Ions in Situ Intercalation for Porous Polymeric Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanosheets with Superior Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Performance

Abstract:Two-dimension layered polymeric carbon nitride possessing unique electronic structure and high specific surface area exhibits immense potentials for visible light driven photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production by the decomposition of water molecules. Herein, porous polymeric carbon nitride nanosheets were obtained by lithium chloride ions in situ intercalating bulk materials in thermal polycondensation process and followed by liquid exfoliation in water. The porous nanosheets show two-dimension layered structure with the thickness of 2-3 nm, a high density in-plane pores with 2-3 nm diameter, a higher surface area (186.3 m(2)g(-1)), enlarged bandgap (by 0.16 eV), prolonged charge carrier lifetime, enhanced electronic transport ability, increased charge carrier density and improved photocurrent responses, which could significantly give rise to photocatalytic activity. The results highlight the crucial role of 2D porous structure, high specific surface area and unique electronic structure on the photocatalytic performance of polymeric carbon nitride materials. Abstract:Development of a simple and stable photocatalyst for overall water splitting is a promising avenue for solar energy conversion. Here, carbon nitride nanosheets (CN) panel decorated with in situ formed (111) facets-oriented Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been prepared by vapor-deposition polymerization (VDP) followed with easy immersion technique. Benefiting from the enhanced visible light absorption, surface plasmon resonance effect of AuNPs, rapid transportation and separation of charge carriers, as well as better aligned valence band levels, the as-obtained photocatalyst shows effective overall water splitting with stoichiometric H2 and O2 evolution even without any sacrificial agent, distinct from the half-reaction of Pt decorated CN. This work opens up a brand-new route for facet self-selective growth of metal on the two-dimensional conjugated carbon nitride materials, which has been demonstrated to be effective for the artificial photosynthesis applications.
Large‐Size, Porous, Ultrathin NiCoP Nanosheets for Efficient Electro/Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Porous ultrathin 2D catalysts are attracting great attention in the field of electro/photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and overall water splitting. Herein, a universal pH‐controlled wet‐chemical strategy is reported followed by thermal and phosphorization treatment to prepare large‐size, porous and ultrathin bimetallic phosphide (NiCoP) nanosheets, in which graphene oxide is adopted as a template to determine the size of products. The thickness of the resultant NiCoP nanosheets ranges from 3.5 to 12.8 nm via delicately adjusting pH from 7.8 to 8.5. The thickness‐dependent electrocatalytic performance is evidenced experimentally and explained by computational studies. The prepared large‐size ultrathin NiCoP nanosheets show excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for overall water splitting, with low overpotentials of 34.3 mV for HER and 245.0 mV for oxygen evolution reaction, respectively, at 10 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the NiCoP nanosheets exhibit superior photocatalytic HER performance, achieving a high HER rate of 238.2 mmol h−1 g−1 in combination with commonly used photocatalyst CdS, which is far superior to that of Pt/CdS (81.7 mmol h−1 g−1). All these results demonstrate large‐size porous ultrathin NiCoP nanosheets as an efficient and multifunctional electro/photocatalyst for water splitting.

Abstract:Photocatalytic overall water splitting can be achieved using Z-scheme systems that mimic natural photosynthesis by combining dissimilar semiconductors in series. However, coupling well-suited H 2 - and O 2 -evolving components remains challenging. Here, we fabricate a Z-scheme system for photocatalytic overall water splitting based on boron-doped, nitrogen-deficient carbon nitride two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets. We prepare ultrathin carbon nitride nanosheets with varying levels of boron dopants and nitrogen defects, which leads to nanosheets that can act as either H 2 - or O 2 -evolving photocatalysts. Using an electrostatic self-assembly strategy, the nanosheets are coupled to obtain a 2D/2D polymeric heterostructure. Owing to their ultrathin nanostructures, strong interfacial interaction and staggered band alignment, a Z-scheme route for efficient charge-carrier separation and transfer is realized. The obtained heterostructure achieves stoichiometric H 2 and O 2 evolution in the presence of Pt and Co(OH) 2 co-catalysts, and the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency reaches 1.16% under one-sun illumination.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis provides a sustainable way to solve the problems of energy crisis and environmental pollution. As a typical visible-light-response organic semiconductor photocatalyst, however, bulk carbon nitride suffers from poor photoreactivity due to the quick recombination of electron–hole pairs, low specific surface area, and weak light absorption property, which severely hampers its practical applications. This review summarizes the recent progresses of carbon nitride based photocatalysis for water splitting to produce hydrogen gas (H 2 ) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). The strategies to improve the photoreactivity of carbon nitride from the aspects of the charge separation and light absorption are highlighted, which include cocatalysts modification, morphological control, crystallinity enhancement, element doping, semiconductor coupling, and surface functionalization. At last, the remaining challenges are analyzed, and the future developments of carbon nitride for photocatalytic water splitting were prospected.

Abstract:Graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) based heterostrutures has attracted intensive attention due to their prominent photocatalytic performance. Here, we explore the g-C3N4/SnS2 coupling effect on the electronic structures and optical absorption of the proposed g-C3N4/SnS2 heterostructure through performing extensive hybrid functional calculations. The obtained geometric structure, band structures, band edge positions and optical absorptions clearly reveal that the g-C3N4 monolayer weakly couples to SnS2 sheet, and forms a typical van der Waals heterojunction. The g-C3N4/SnS2 heterostructure can effectively harvest visible light, and its valence band maximum and conduction band minimum locate in energetically favorable positions for both water oxidation and reduction reactions. Remarkably, the charge transfer from the g-C3N4 monolayer to SnS2 sheet leads to the built-in interface polarized electric field, which is desirable for the photogenerated carrier separation. The built-in interface polarized electric field as well as the nice band edge alignment implys that the g-C3N4/SnS2 heterostructure is a promising g-C3N4 based water splitting photocatalyst with good performance.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting is a cost-effective way to convert sustainable solar energy into chemical energy. Among various photocatalytic systems, coupling the H2- and O2- evolving photocatalysts has been widely used in photocatalytic water splitting. However, due to the close spatial distance between surface electrons and surface holes, this heterogeneous material easily catalyzes the unwanted reverse reaction, limiting the solar energy conversion efficiency. Here we present a carbon nitride nanosheet (CNN) homojunction which possesses electrons-enriched region and holes-enriched region induced by the interfacial internal electric field. The reverse reactions are significantly suppressed by benefiting from the spatial separation of the oxidation (+2.21 V) and reduction (-1.19 V) regions. The homojunction exhibits efficient photocatalytic activity for H2 and O2 evolution (1270.5 and 36.0 lmol h-1) with the scavenger. Meanwhile, the solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of overall water splitting was improved to 0.14%. This research provides a new way for semiconductor design in solar energy conversion applications.

Abstract:The key challenge of the photocatalytic technology is to discover a low-cost photocatalyst with the functions of efficient sunlight utilization and high charge separation rate for application in the field of renewable energy generation. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has spurred worldwide attention due to its abundance of raw materials, superior visible-light response activity, facile synthetic strategy, chemical stability, and a unique layered structure. In the past decade, the combination of g-C3N4 and organic compounds became a research hotspot because of its low cost, adjustable solar light absorption band and stable crystal structures. In this review, (1) the latest developments in the morphology control of g-C3N4 as a photocatalyst including nanorods, nanotubes, nanosheets, nanospheres, porous structures and other different tunable nanostructures, are systematically studied. (2) The incorporation strategies of g-C3N4 with various organic compounds including recently reported organic molecules, polymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the aim of improving the overall photocatalytic performance are discussed in detail. (3) We theoretically present applications in water splitting, CO2 reduction, pollutant degradation and environmental disinfection. Finally, the research challenges and prospects of organic compound composited g-C3N4 towards hydrogen evolution through water splitting are proposed.

Abstract:Semiconductor-based photocatalysis is considered to be an attractive way for solving the worldwide energy shortage and environmental pollution issues. Since the pioneering work in 2009 on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) for visible-light photocatalytic water splitting, g-C3N4 -based photocatalysis has become a very hot research topic. This review summarizes the recent progress regarding the design and preparation of g-C3N4 -based photocatalysts, including the fabrication and nanostructure design of pristine g-C3N4 , bandgap engineering through atomic-level doping and molecular-level modification, and the preparation of g-C3N4 -based semiconductor composites. Also, the photo-catalytic applications of g-C3N4 -based photocatalysts in the fields of water splitting, CO2 reduction, pollutant degradation, organic syntheses, and bacterial disinfection are reviewed, with emphasis on photocatalysis promoted by carbon materials, non-noble-metal cocatalysts, and Z-scheme heterojunctions. Finally, the concluding remarks are presented and some perspectives regarding the future development of g-C3N4 -based photocatalysts are highlighted.
Potassium Doped and Nitrogen Defect Modified Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Boosted Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Abstract:Controlling the structure of semiconductors to tailor are physicochemical and photoelectronic structure features. Graphitic carbon nitride has triggered a new impetus in the field of photocatalysis. However, the rapid recombination of charge carriers limited its photocatalytic activity. Herein, we demonstrate that potassium doped and nitrogen defects into graphitic carbon nitride (KCNx) framework are favorable for visible light harvesting, charge separation and have highly efficient photocatalytic behavior for water splitting. It exhibits a high hydrogen evolution activity of 59.9 mmol.g-1.h-1 (66.6 times much higher than that of pristine g-C3N4), and remarkable apparent quantum efficiency of 57.17 nm at 420 nm. The superior photocatalytic performance of the KCNx sample was observed due to the less recombination rate of photogenerated electron and hole, and enhanced conductivity, which was proven by photoelectrochemical and PL. The results revealed that defect and element doped graphitic carbon nitride and thus leads to better efficiency for water splitting than the pristine carbon nitride.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting using semiconductors is considered as one of the most promising green technologies to solve energy crises and environmental issues by converting solar energy into hydrogen fuel. The development of visible-light-responsive and highly efficient photocatalyst is the key issue in in the field of photocatalytic study. Polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has gained tremendous research interest owing to its visible-light responsivity, excellent thermal and chemical stability, easy synthesis and low cost. However, g-C3N4 prepared with thermal polymerization method has low specific surface area, high recombination probability of photogenerated electron and hole, as well as limited utilization of visible light, which inhibit its performance in photocatalytic conversions. Realizing its large-scale application in photocatalysis requires advances in improving its activity with controllable strategies. This review briefly summarizes the recent advances in designing g-C3N4-based photocatalysts with boosted activity for hydrogen production from water splitting reaction.

Abstract:Z-scheme photocatalysts encouraged by natural photosynthesis have received increasing attention for pure water splitting. However, there have been only a few instances of effective Z-scheme nanosystems utilizing nonmetal photocatalysts for both water reduction and oxidation. In this study, we used carbon nitride (CN), metallic NixP, and crystalline red phosphorus (RP) to build a solid-state Z-scheme photocatalytic system, which worked as reduction sites, an electron mediator, and oxidation sites, respectively. The light absorption capability up to similar to 600 nm enabled the photocatalyst to realize water splitting under broad-spectrum illumination. Detailed analysis suggested that the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate was apparently enhanced on account of effective spatial separation of light-induced charges owing to the intimate contact between the NixP mediator and photocatalyst components as well as the suitable energy band alignment. Meanwhile, hydrogen peroxide instead of oxygen was generated from water oxidation, which can solve the separation and safety issues of the synchronized production of hydrogen and oxygen and thus facilitated the feasible application of photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Abstract:Despite of suitable band structures for harvesting solar light and driving water redox reactions, polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) has suffered from poor charge transfer ability and sluggish surface reaction kinetics, which limit its photocatalytic activity for water splitting. Herein, atomically dispersed Zn-coordinated three-dimensional (3D) sponge-like PCN (Zn-PCN) is synthesized through a novel intermediate coordination strategy. Advanced characterizations and theoretical calculations well evidence that Zn single atoms are coordinated and stabilized on PCN in the form of Zn-N6 configuration featured with an electron-deficient state. Such an electronic configuration has been demonstrated contributive to promoted electron excitation, accelerated charge separation and transfer as well as reduced water redox barriers. Further benefited from the abundant surface active sites derived from the 3D porous structure, Zn-PCN realizes visible-light photocatalysis for overall water splitting with H2 and O2 simultaneously evolved at a stoichiometric ratio of 2:1. This work brings new insights into the design of novel single-atom photocatalysts by deepening the understanding of electronic configurations and reactive sites favorable to excellent photocatalysis for water splitting and related solar energy conversion reactions.

Abstract:Rational design of photocatalyst with efficient performance in water splitting is highly desired for solar energy utilization. In this work, a simple and facile strategy was developed to synthesize Mo doped graphic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) by a two-step thermal treatment process. As obtained product exhibits sheet-like morphology with porous structure, and the formation mechanism could be ascribed to the exfoliation effect in thermal environment. Photocatalytic property investigation reveals that Mo doped g-C3N4 nanosheets present greatly improved hydrogen evolution rate of 1.6 mmol g−1 h−1 under visible light, which is about 9.4 times higher than that of pristine g-C3N4. The improved performance could be well attributed to its enhanced visible light absorption, well suppressed carrier recombination and greatly increased specific surface area. Accordingly, our work provides a promising and straight forward way to develop advanced photocatalyst with high efficiency for renewable energy generation.
