Abstract:Exiting strategies for 3D shape-changing structures are constrained by either the complicated fabrication process or the harsh demands of active materials. Facile preparation of 3D shape-changing structures with an extremely simple approach based on the elastomeric polymer still remains a challenging topic. Here, we report a fast digital patterning of surface topography of a single-layer elastomeric polymer toward 3D shape-changing structures. The surface topography features digitally engraved grooves by a laser engraver on a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) sheet, which is surface oxidized by the UV-ozone treatment. The resulting engraved PDMS sheets exhibit programmable shape-changing behaviors to form various 3D structures under the action of organic solvent. Experimental and numerical studies reveal the fundamental aspects of surface topography-guided 3D shape-changing structures. Demonstrations of this concept in developing various complex 3D shape-changing structures illustrate the simplicity and effectiveness of our approach, thereby creating engineering opportunities in a wide range of applications such as actuators and soft robots.
Reconfigurable and Orthogonal Stiffness‐structure Patterning of Dynamically Crosslinked Amphigels

Abstract:Abstract Patterning diversified properties and surface structure of polymer materials are of great importance toward their potential in biology, optics, and electronics. However, achieving both the patternability of stiffness and microstructure in a reconfigurable manner remains challenging. Here, we prepare amphigels crosslinked by dynamic disulfide bonds, which can be reversibly swollen by immiscible water or liquid paraffin. In the paraffingel form, the materials exhibited a high modulus of 130 MPa due to densified hydrogen bonds. Whereas swollen by water, the modulus fell over two orders of magnitude owing to the destruction of the hydrogen bonds. Via regionalized swelling of the solvents, well‐controlled and rewritable soft/stiff mechanical patterns can be created. On the other hand, the dynamic exchange of the disulfide crosslinking enables mechanophoto patterning to fabricate sophisticated macrogeometries and microstructures. The reconfigurable stiffness‐structure patterning can be manipulated orthogonally, which will create more application opportunities beyond conventional hydrogels and organogels.

Abstract:A diselenide bond, as a dynamic covalent bond, is a versatile tool to construct smart interfaces, which can respond to visible light. In this work, we used microcontact printing (μCP) to construct diselenide patterns on quartz substrates. Fluorescent patterns were obtained on the modified surfaces via the visible-light-induced diselenide metathesis reaction, which allowed the patterning process to be fast, dynamically erasable, and compatible with different fluorescent molecules including rhodamine B and boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) used in this work. A variety of analytical methods offered comprehensive evidence for the success of the printing of diselenides here. We further printed diselenide and disulfide intersecting stripes on one single quartz substrate layer by layer and introduced rhodamine B and BODIPY to obtain a multicolored pattern simultaneously. By taking advantage of their responsiveness to different wavelengths, the composite pattern of disulfides and diselenides could be erased by two stepwise stages. The fluorescent images of the modified substrate showed a good agreement with the pattern of the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) stamp, indicating the methodology with a potential application for information storage.

Abstract:Spatially heterogeneous distribution of active components is key to the diverse shape‐morphing behaviors of biological species and their associated functions. Artificial morphing materials employing similar strategies have widened the design space for advanced functional devices. Typically, the spatial heterogeneity is introduced during the material synthesis/fabrication step and cannot be altered afterward. An approach that allows spatio‐selective programming of crystallinity in a shape‐memory polymer (SMP) by a digital photothermal effect is reported. The light‐patternable crystallinity affects greatly the shape morphing behavior. Consequently, a pre‐stretched 2D film with spatial heterogeneity in crystallinity can morph with time into designable 3D permanent shapes, achieving the 4D transformation. This approach utilizes a reprocessible thermoplastic SMP (polylactide) and the programming relies on a physical phase transformation (crystallization) instead of chemical heterogeneity. This allows repeated erasing and reprogramming using the same material, suggesting a versatile and sustainable means for manufacturing advanced morphing devices.

Abstract:Patterning polymeric materials with controllable microstructures can meet diversified requirements and realize promising applications. Exploring micro‐/nano‐pattern methodology offers possibilities for future techniques, however, the self‐organized growth of polymeric materials has some limitations and the development of direct and noncontact patterning processes is still challenging. In this work, the study presents a facile strategy for endowing polymers with spatially regulated microstructures by direct photo‐printing, which incorporates both advantages of typical top‐down and bottom‐up approaches. By employing the photodimerization of anthracene‐containing semi‐crystallized polymers, the gradient crosslinking results in a mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients between the crosslinked surface and the uncrosslinked bottom layer. After heating treatment, constrained by the crosslinked surface, the uncrosslinked bottom polymer of the molten state in the exposed region tends to flow and migrate toward the unexposed region, similar to a volcanic eruption, which accurately determines the height and morphology of pattern. Besides, the well‐defined patterns can controllably grow upon thermal treatment due to phase transformation and migration. The versatility of the proposed strategy not only provides a brand‐new reliable platform to pattern functional materials with photo‐regulated and reversible microstructures, but also promotes the development of smart materials that can find applications in information safety, reversible microfluidics, and electronic devices.
Ultra‐Fast Fabrication of Mechanical‐Water‐Responsive Color‐Changing Photonic Crystals Elastomers and 3D Complex Devices

Abstract:This study communicates a novel approach to fabricating photonic elastomers using photonic ink infused with SiNPs. The resulting elastomers demonstrate responsive color changes under mechanical stress and upon water interaction. The fabrication of macroscopic photonic crystal devices with complex geometries is precisely controlled via a DLP‐based 3D printing technique. The traditional fabrication of opal‐structured photonic crystals is constrained by the rate of solvent evaporation, a process that is not only time‐consuming but also labor‐intensive. This study introduces a paradigm shift by incorporating silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) with high zeta potentials and hydrogen bonding capabilities into an elastomeric matrix, resulting in a novel non‐close‐packed structure. This innovation circumvents the limitations of conventional methods by enabling the rapid formation of photonic inks (PI) into vibrant and luminous photonic elastomers (PEs) within seconds. These PEs demonstrate remarkable mechanochromic properties, exhibiting dynamic color changes across the visible spectrum in response to tensile and compressive deformations. Furthermore, the presence of hydroxyl groups endows the PEs with superior water‐responsiveness, which can be finely tuned through the ink formulation. The elimination of solvent evaporation dependency facilitates the fabrication of macroscopic photonic crystal devices with complex geometries using digital light processing (DLP)‐based 3D printing. This approach ensures exceptional optical performance and high customization potential. The resulting PEs hold significant promise for applications in smart wearables, soft robotics, and advanced human‐machine interface technologies.

Abstract:Elastomers with high aspect ratio surface patterns are a promising class of materials for designing soft machines in the future. Here, a facile method for fabricating surface patterns on polyurethane elastomer by subtly utilizing the Poisson effect and gradient photocrosslinking is demonstrated. By applying uniaxial tensile strains, the aspect ratio of the surface patterns can be optionally manipulated. At prestretched state, the pattern on the polyurethane elastomer can be readily constructed through compressive stress, resulting from the gradient photocrosslinking via selective photodimerization of an anthracene-functionalized polyurethane elastomer (referred to as ANPU). The macromolecular aggregation structures during stretching deformation significantly contribute to the fabrication of high aspect ratio surface patterns. The insightful finite element analysis well demonstrates that the magnitude and distribution of internal stress in the ANPU elastomer can be regulated by selectively gradient crosslinking, leading to polymer chains migrate from the exposed region to the unexposed region, thereby generating a diverse array of surface patterns. Additionally, the periodic surface patterns exhibit tunable structural color according to the different stretching states and are fully reversible over multiple cycles, opening up avenues for diverse applications such as smart displays, stretchable strain sensors, and anticounterfeiting devices. A straightforward yet powerful strategy to fabricate micropatterns with high aspect ratio on polyurethane elastomers is developed by spatially regulating the photodimerization and the distribution of internal stress. Abstract:Cephalopods can change their color and patterns by activating the skin chromatophores for camouflage. However, in the man-made soft material systems, it is greatly challenging to fabricate the color-change structure in the desired patterns and shapes. Herein, we employ a multi-material microgel direct ink writing (DIW) printing method to make mechanochromic double network hydrogels in arbitrary shapes. We prepare the microparticles by grinding the freeze-dried polyelectrolyte hydrogel and immobilize the microparticles in the precursor solution to produce the printing ink. The polyelectrolyte microgels contain mechanophores as the cross-linkers. We adjust the rheological and printing properties of the microgel ink by tailoring the grinding time of freeze-dried hydrogels and microgel concentration. The multi-material DIW 3D printing technique is utilized to fabricate various 3D hydrogel structures which could change into a colorful pattern in response to applied force. The microgel printing strategy shows great potential in the fabrication of the mechanochromic device with arbitrary patterns and shapes.

Abstract:Shape memory behavior was applied here as a new approach for developing the latent photopatterned morphologies in two/three dimension (2D/3D) on the modified poly(styrene-block-butadiene-block-styrene) (SBS). By attaching anthracene groups onto the SBS chains, the elastomer frozen in the deformed state was photopatterned via the photodimerization of anthracene. Upon thermal treatment, shape memory process could effectively develop the latent photopatterning induced 2D-2D and 2D-3D shape transformation. Due to the reversible dimerization of anthracene, the photoinduced patterns and the shape conformation could be erased and redeveloped for multiple times.

Abstract:A photocleavable terpolymer hydrogel cross-linked with o-nitrobenzyl derivative cross-linker is shown to be capable of self-shaping without losing its physical integrity and robustness due to spontaneous asymmetric swelling of network caused by UV-light-induced gradient cleavage of chemical cross-linkages. The continuum model and finite element method are used to elucidate the curling mechanism underlying. Remarkably, based on the self-changing principle, the photosensitive hydrogels can be developed as photoprinting soft and wet platforms onto which specific 3D characters and images are faithfully duplicated in macro/microscale without contact by UV light irradiation under the cover of customized photomasks. Importantly, a quick response (QR) code is accurately printed on the photoactive hydrogel for the first time. Scanning QR code with a smartphone can quickly connect to a web page. This photoactive hydrogel is promising to be a new printing or recording material.

Abstract:<p>An electrospray photolithographic patterning (EPP) process that integrates advantages of electrospray (ES) and digital light processing (DLP) for maskless fabrication of 3D porous microstructures is proposed here. First, monodisperse microparticles with controllable particle size produced by ES are deposited on a substrate to form a photoresist layer. Second, DLP exposure of the photoresist layer selectively irradiates the microparticles to form a desired pattern with complexity. Third, the repetitive steps of deposition and exposure enable layer‐by‐layer construction of a green part with embedded 3D patterns of irradiation. Finally, the irradiated microparticles are removed from the green part to form 3D particulate microstructures. With this process, freeform patterning of multiple micro‐electro‐mechanical system elements with controlled porosity, involving microfluidic channels, stamps, and power‐free pressure sensors is successfully demonstrated. The EPP process has a great technical potential for freeform and high‐throughput fabrication of multi‐layered porous microstructures in versatile applications such as micromixers, porous stamping, and microsensors.</p>

Abstract:Controlled surface patterns are useful in a wide range of applications including flexible electronics, elastomeric optics, fluidic channels, surface engineering, measurement technique, biological templates, stamps, and sensors. In this work, we report on the controlled formation of surface patterns in metal films deposited on elasticity-gradient polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates. Because of the temperature gradient during the curing process, the PDMS substrate in each sample successively changes from a purely liquid state at one side to a purely elastic state at the opposite side. It is found that surface folds appear in the liquid or viscous PDMS region while wrinkles form in the elastic region. In the transition region from the liquid to elastic PDMS, a nested pattern (i.e., the coexisting of folds and wrinkles) can be observed. The folding wave is triggered by the intrinsic stress during the film deposition and its wavelength is independent of the film thickness. The wrinkling wave is induced by the thermal compression after deposition and its wavelength is proportional to the film thickness. The report in this work could promote better understanding of the effect of substrate elasticity on the surface patterns and fabrication of such patterns (folds and wrinkles) by tuning the substrate property.
Micropatterning of Block Copolymer Solutions

Abstract:Submicron patterns of block copolymers were generated using an elastomeric mold against solutions of block copolymers. To prevent the swelling of the elastomeric mold by the solvent used in the block copolymer solution, a thin layer of amorphous fluorinated polymer was coated on the surface of the mold. The comparison of patterns generated using an unmodified mold with those generated using a modified mold is also reported. Coupled with their microphase separation at nanometer scale, these block copolymer patterns can be applied in nanofabrication as nanotemplates.

Abstract:Pattern technology plays an important role in the generation of microstructures with different functionalities and morphologies. In this report, a straightforward and versatile strategy is presented for spatially regulating the growth of a microstructure on a surface by the photodimerization of maleimide (MI). Upon exposure of ultraviolet (UV) light, photodimerization of MI in a film comprising furan-grafted polymer and bismaleimide (BMI) produces a chemical gradient, which can drive the diffusion of BMI from the unexposed to the exposed region and from the bottom to the surface, resulting in the growth of micropatterns. Sequential crosslinking induced by the Diels-Alder reaction between MI and furan maintains the stability of pattern shape. Theoretical modeling with reaction-diffusion equations reveal that as photodimerization moves the system far from thermodynamic equilibrium, the formation of a chemical potential gradient requires the redistribution of matter, resulting in the formation of topographies. Directional molecular motion induced by UV light can generate complex morphology, and produce materials with unique optical functions, such as charming-ordered gratings. This straightforward method of fabricating micropatterns by photodimerization-induced diffusion is successfully applied to patterned curved surfaces, microfluidic channels and encapsulation of integrated light emitting diode chips.

Abstract:Direct photopatterning is a powerful strategy for patterning colloidal quantum dots (QDs) for their integration in various electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, ultraviolet (UV) exposure required for QD patterning, especially those with short wavelength (e.g., deep UV light), can degrade the photo-, and electroluminescence, and other properties of patterned QDs. Here we develop a photosensitizer-assisted approach for direct photopatterning of QDs with h-line (centered at 405 nm) UV light and better preservation of their luminescent properties. This approach uses a photosensitizer that can absorb the h-line UV light and transfer the energy to activate bisazide-based crosslinkers via Dexter energy transfer. Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) reconfigurable patterns with dynamic morphologies enable the on-demand control of surface properties, such as optical, wetting, and adhesive properties, to achieve smart surfaces. Here, a simple yet general strategy is developed for fabricating 3D patterns with reversible wrinkles on the surface, in which a Diels-Alder (D-A) reaction in the top layer, which consists of a reversible cross-linked polymer network composed of a furan-containing copolymer (PSFB) and bismaleimide (BMI), can be spatially controlled by the photodimerization of BMI. When a photomask is used during irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) light, selective photodimerization of the maleimide leads to the diffusion of maleimide from the unexposed region to the exposed region, resulting in the generation of a diffused relief pattern. By controlling the reversible D-A reaction at different temperatures, orthogonal wrinkles can be sequentially and reversibly generated or erased in both the exposed and unexposed regions on the surface. Theoretical modeling with boundary effects reveals that the orientation of the wrinkle in the exposed region is perpendicular to the boundary, whereas the wrinkle in the unexposed region is parallel to the boundary. This strategy, based on a photocontrolled D-A reaction, provides an important and robust alternative for fabricating 3D patterned surfaces with dynamic topographies.

Abstract:The development of controlled patterning of phage (viruses) could expand opportunities for both fundamental studies and creating various materials platforms. Inducing the elastomeric instability of PDMS film provides a non-lithographic, tuneable, controlled method for generating micro/nanoscale wrinkle patterns. Phage display has emerged as a powerful method for selecting peptides that possess enhanced selectivity and binding affinity toward a variety of targets. In this report, we demonstrate the non-lithographic patterning of phage-displayed peptides with wrinkled elastomers. Our results show that the phage-displayed peptides can be patterned on specific locations in controlled and tuneable ways, be transferred to other substrates and induce the self-assembly of hybrid materials. We anticipate that these results could open up exciting opportunities in fundamental studies and in applications ranging from sensors, hybrid materials, self-assembly, surface and interface, to micro/nanoelectronics.
Photo‐Polymerization Induced Hierarchical Pattern Via Self‐Wrinkling

Abstract:Hierarchical patterns are widely found on the biological skins in nature and can provide unique functions to surfaces such as wettability, optical, and adhesive properties. Herein, a facile and robust strategy to generate the self‐wrinkling pattern on the surface of the photo‐curing coating is proposed, which comprises a crosslinking monomer, photoinitiator, and fluorinated copolymer as additive. The fluorinated copolymer, which contains fluorocarbon chains possessing low surface‐energy, tertiary amine as coinitiator, and anthracene in the side chain, can self‐assemble to the top layer for constructing the gradient photo‐crosslinking system. Upon the irradiation of ultraviolet (UV) light, the mismatch of shrinkage caused by the gradient photo‐crosslinking leads to the formation of wrinkles, the morphology of which can be regulated by monomer proportion, the content of fluorinated copolymer, and the thickness of the film. Taking the spatiotemporal advantages of light, the hierarchical patterns of wrinkle are generated by programmed exposure with photomask, which has potential applications in anti‐counterfeiting and encapsulation of light‐emitting diode (LED) chip for displaying. This strategy provides a rapid and universal alternative method to fabricate a hierarchical pattern of the surface.
