Abstract:Dopamine is a kind of biological neurotransmitter.In aqueous solution,it can be oxidized by dissolved oxygen and undergoes an oxidation-crosslinking reaction,forming a composite layer of polydopamine that strongly attaches to a substrate.Based on the characteristics of dopamine,in recent years,membrane technology researchers have performed surface modification via the self-polymerization-composite of dopamine on solid basement-membranes.Besides,the polydopamine composite layer with high reactivity offers a platform for further surface modification and functionalization.In this paper,research progress on modification and functionalization of membrane surface using dopamine was reviewed,the application fields included ultra/micro filtration,biomedical membranes and pervaporation film,etc.

Abstract:A superaerophobic-hydrophobic Janus membrane is fabricated by single-sided polydopamine/polyethyleneimine codeposition. The Janus membrane significantly promotes fine bubble generation and gas/liquid mass transfer. Its application is exemplified by highly efficient dopamine oxidization and enzymatic CO2 hydration. Polydopamine-Coated Nanofibrous Mats As A Versatile Platform for Producing Porous Functional Membranes

Abstract:In this work, polydopamine-coated electrospun polystyrene (PS) nanofibrous mats were successfully prepared by simply immersing the PS mats into dopamine alkaline Tris buffer solution for 24 h. The successful growth of polydopamine (Pdop) was confirmed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The thickness of the Pdop layer was about 20 nm observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The wetting behavior was changed tremendously into superhydrophilicity. Combining the unique characteristics of Pdop as active secondary reaction sites and electrospun mat as a flexible porous support, this hierarchically structured nanofibrous mat can serve as a useful platform for developing porous functional membranes. As demonstrated, oil/water separation and molecule gating membranes were fabricated by using the Michael reaction of Pdop coating with undecanethiol (UT) or 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA), respectively. As an oil/water separation membrane, the long alkyl chains of UT anchored on the membrane surface increased the contact angle (CA) of water distinctly, and water was blockaded completely while oil smoothly passed through the membrane. Similarly, a molecule gating membrane was constructed based on the pH-induced deprotonation of the carboxyl group of MUA, and its permeation selectivity was confirmed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) with an electrochemical probe. Moreover, the reductive property of the Pdop coating was also utilized to facilely introduce various metal nanoparticles into membrane systems for potential applications, for example, a silver nanoparticle-decorated membrane can be used as an effective antibacterial film as confirmed by the modified Kirby-Bauer method. All performed experiments demonstrate that polydopamine-coated nanofibrous mats can serve as a versatile platform for producing porous functional membranes.

Abstract:Polydopamine (PDA) coating offers an environmentally friendly and facile method to modulate membrane surface properties. However, the oxidation of dopamine process by air normally needs a long time and forms uneven PDA coatings, which limit the applications of PDA. Herein, we proposed a strategy to promote the fast deposition of PDA triggered by carbon quantum dots (CQDs) under visible light irradiation. The reactive oxygen species generated by CQDs enhance the covalent polymerization and deposition rate of dopamine, thus, forming a uniform and smooth nanofiltration membrane surface. Under the optimized conditions, the PDA coating triggered by CQDs endows the membrane with superior dye rejection of methyl blue (99.7%) and water flux of 24.4 L m-2 h-1 at 0.6 MPa. Moreover, the membrane exhibits great potential in selective separation between dye and salt, the separation factor of methyl blue /NaCl can be 199.8. This work provides an efficient strategy to construct smooth PDA coatings with a fast deposition rate, which is beneficial to tailor loose nanofiltration membrane surfaces for wide applications.
Fast Polydopamine Coating on Reverse Osmosis Membrane: Process Investigation and Membrane Performance Study.

Abstract:We report a novel membrane surface modification method using a fast polydopamine coating (fPDAc) strategy. Specifically, NaIO4 was introduced in the coating process to accelerate the polydopamine deposition rate. Surface properties and separation performances of fPDAc-coated reverse osmosis membranes were characterized and compared to those obtained using the conventional slow polydopamine coating (sPDAc) strategy. Quartz crystal microbalance measurements showed greatly increased polydopamine deposition rate using the fPDAc method, resulting in a reduction of 97% coating time to reach an areal mass of 2000 ng/cm2. Both fPDAc and sPDAc enhanced the surface hydrophilicity and reduced the membrane surface charge. At relatively low areal mass deposition (<1000 ng/cm2), fPDAc-coated membranes showed improved NaCl rejection together with only mild loss of pure water flux. Nevertheless, this rejection enhancement effect was not noticeable when extensive polydopamine coating was applied due to the undesirable cake-enhanced concentration polarization effect. The extensive polydopamine coating was further accompanied with severe loss of membrane permeability, suggesting that shorter coating time (e.g., 4 min) is preferred using the fPDAc method. Our study provides a more rapid and effective membrane surface coating method compared to the conventional sPDAc method.
Preparation of Janus membrane based on biomimetic polydopamine interface regulation and superhydrophobic attapulgite spraying for on-demand oil-water emulsion separation

Abstract:Here, we report a Janus membrane constructed using a sustainable regenerated cellulose (RC) membrane as matrix, based on biomimetic polydopamine (PDA) interface regulation and superhydrophobic attapulgite (SOATP) spraying. The dual-action PDA was reasonably interfacially-regulated by high temperature-induced self-polymerization to construct a superhydrophilic surface with PDA layer/particle hierarchical structures, which strengthened the interfacial interactions between the organic RC substrate and inorganic SOATP. Subsequently, SOATP was sprayed on the bottom surface of membrane via a simple spraying method to obtain a superhydrophobic surface. The resulting /SOATP Janus membrane exhibited a superhydrophilic top surface and superhydrophobic bottom surface, with excellent separation efficiency (>99%) and acceptable permeation flux toward different types of emulsions. The membrane also showed good renewability, excellent environmental durability and structural stability. The facile and versatile interface regulation and spraying techniques, as well as the environmentally friendly and economical raw materials, were used, which makes the Janus membrane a promising solution for a range of applications in the field of oil-water separation.

Abstract:A facile and versatile approach for the preparation of antifouling and antimicrobial polymer membranes has been developed on the basis of bioinspired polydopamine (PDA) in this work. It is well-known that a tightly adherent PDA layer can be generated over a wide range of material surfaces through a simple dip-coating process in dopamine aqueous solution. The resulting PDA coating is prone to be further surface-tailored and functionalized via secondary treatments because of its robust reactivity. Herein, a typical hydrophobic polypropylene (PP) porous membrane was first coated with a PDA layer and then further modified by poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) via multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions between PVP and PDA. Data of water contact angle measurements showed that hydrophilicity and wettability of the membranes were significantly improved after introducing PDA and PVP layers. Both permeation fluxes and antifouling properties of the modified membranes were enhanced as evaluated in oil/water emulsion filtration, protein filtration, and adsorption tests. Furthermore, the modified membranes showed remarkable antimicrobial activity after iodine complexation with the PVP layer. The PVP layer immobilized on the membrane had satisfying long-term stability and durability because of the strong noncovalent forces between PVP and PDA coating. The strategy of material surface modification reported here is substrate-independent, and applicable to a broad range of materials and geometries, which allows effective development of materials with novel functional coatings based on the mussel-inspired surface chemistry.

Abstract:Polyarylene sulfide sulfone membrane was surface-modified by coating with polydopamine to improve its hydrophilic property and permeation performance, and owing to its favorable solvent resistance, it could be applied in the filtration of organic wastewater. The change in the morphology and chemical properties was ascertained by SEM and FTIR, which suggested that polydopamine was adsorbed at the polyarylene sulfide sulfone (PASS) membrane. It was confirmed that the hydrophilic property of PASS membrane was enhanced through water contact angle measurement. Moreover, it possessed an improved flux compared with the pristine PASS membrane even after high temperature and organic solvent treatment.

Abstract:The demand for highly efficient and multifunctional membranes in various separation processes is increasing. Recently, mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) has provided a promising way to meet these requirements because of its surface-adhesive property and film-forming ability. However, traditional PDA coatings usually suffer from the disadvantages of nonuniformity, incompactness, and instability, leading to poor molecular separation and service performance. Herein, uniform, compact, and robust PDA coatings were fabricated on an ultrafiltration substrate via a reasonable screening of oxidants for the oxidized self-polymerization of dopamine. The as-prepared PDA coatings were nanoporous (0.56 ± 0.04 and 0.93 ± 0.04 nm) with a thickness of ∼75 nm, which endows the composite membranes with a high solute rejection and solvent permeability during molecular separation. They are useful in organic solvent nanofiltration because of their superior structural stability. Moreover, the composite membranes can be used for recycling the nanometer catalyst from organic solvents for the first time, which has significantly broadened the potential applications of these mussel-inspired coatings for versatile separation processes.
Rapid Co-Deposition of Dopamine and Polyethyleneimine Triggered by CuSO4/H2O2 Oxidation to Fabricate Nanofiltration Membranes with High Selectivity and Antifouling Ability

Abstract:Membrane surface properties play important roles in the separation performance and fouling behavior during the membrane-based water treatment processes. Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) layer with abundant functional groups can endow the membrane surface with increased hydrophilicity as well as extraordinary versatility and creative potential for further functionalization toward specific applications. However, the slow deposition rate still limits its application in membrane modification. In this study, rapid deposition of the PDA layer on the surface of the polysulfone membrane was realized by catalytic oxidation using CuSO4/H2O2. Meanwhile, polyethyleneimine (PEI) was introduced to co-deposit with PDA to obtain a hydrophilic, uniform, and electroneutral separation layer for the nanofiltration membrane. An optimized stoichiometry of modifiers and oxidants was obtained by UV-vis absorbance measurement. The membrane surface properties including surface morphology, roughness, chemical element compositions, wettability, and charge behavior before and after modification were characterized through various techniques. The optimized PDA/PEI modified membrane (a-Cu(15)-PDA/PEI) possessed higher MgCl2/NaCl and dye/salt selectivities as well as improved anti-fouling performance compared to the commercial NF-270 membrane. Furthermore, the Gaussian simulation combined with XPS analysis illustrated that the introduction of Cu2+/H2O2 accelerated the dopamine oxidation and facilitated the formation of CO quinoid structures, thus providing more reactive sites for the Schiff base reaction in the PDA/PEI co-deposition process. The results from this study provide theoretical foundations for improving nanofiltration membrane performances by PDA/PEI modification.
A Facile Approach to Construct Hierarchical Dense Membranes Via Polydopamine for Enhanced Propylene/nitrogen Separation

Abstract:Bio-inspired polydopamine has been established as a facile and versatile surface modification agent in recent years, many applications have been found such as tailoring the wettability of membrane surfaces, constructing antifouling or antimicrobial surface and serving as a platform for further modifications. To our knowledge, these applications were almost all aimed at liquid systems. For gas separations, however, polydopamine (PDA) was rarely investigated and exploited in literature. In this work, we report a facile method to fabricate ultrathin reverse-selective gas separation membranes (bigger molecules permeate more) via self-polymerization and adhesion of polydopamine onto a thin PDMS interlayer (spin-coated on a porous substrate). The as-prepared hierarchical structured membranes (PDA@PDMS) were used to selectively collect hydrocarbons from nitrogen (propylene/nitrogen as a model gas pair) with considerably enhanced separation selectivity and high gas permeance. Evidence supported that in two ways polydopamine skin layer favorably promoted the overall separation performance. Firstly, polydopamine exhibits much better affinity with propylene than that with nitrogen as indicated by gas sorption test. Secondly, owing to the excellent adhesion property and the dense structure of polydopamine, the in-situ polymerized polydopamine contributes to reducing the overall membrane thickness as well as minimizing the possible microstructural defects. Furthermore, polydopamine provides abundant functional groups for further design of membrane surface chemistry, which we believe would have good potential in other possible gas applications (e.g., carbon capture, olefin/paraffin).
Facile preparation of nanochannel membrane based on polydopamine modified porous organic polymer nanoparticles for high-efficient dye desalination

Abstract:Nanochannel membranes derived from porous nanomaterials are crucial for driving the development of advanced desalination and water treatment membranes. However, the practical application of polymer nanochannel membranes is halted by the tedious and complicated preparation and the lack of stability in aqueous service process. In this work, we synthesized a novel type of polydopamine modified imidazolium containing porous organic polymer nanoparticles (PDA@POP), which has good water dispersibility and interface adhesion capability. The PDA@POP aqueous dispersion solution was dip coated on the polysulfone ultrafiltration supporting layer, and the nanocoating was further crosslinked with 1,3,5-Benzenetricarboxylic chloride. The appropriate surface modification of POP nanoparticles with PDA enhances the interfacial interaction and maintains effective-aperture structure, leading to stiff and continuous nanochannels facilitating the water molecules and salt ions quickly transporting through the PDA@POPM membrane. As such, both the water permeability (∼57.0 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ) and dye/salt selectivity (>24) of PDA@POPM are improved 5–10 times higher than that of conventional polymer nanofiltration membranes. Meanwhile, the membrane exhibits good stability and anti-fouling property in long-term dye desalination process. This work provides a convenient and universal strategy to design and manufacture nanochannel membranes with high separation performance.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) coatings have been broadly exploited for constructing functional membrane surfaces. One-step codeposition of PDA with antifouling polymers, especially zwitterionic polymers, has been regarded as a promising strategy for fabricating antifouling membrane surfaces. However, one challenge is that the codeposition is usually a slow process over 10 h or even several days. Herein, we report that CuSO4/H2O2 is able to notably accelerate the codeposition process of PDA with poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA). In our case, PSBMA is facilely anchored to the polypropylene microporous membrane (PPMM) surfaces within 1 h with the assistance of PDA because of its strong interfacial adhesion. The PDA/PSBMA-coated PPMMs show excellent surface hydrophilicity, high water permeation flux (7506 ± 528 L/m2·h at 0.1 MPa), and an outstanding antifouling property. Moreover, the antifouling property is maintained after the membranes are treated with acid and alkali solutions as well as organic solvents. To recap, it provides a facile, universal, and time-saving strategy for exploiting high-efficiency and durable antifouling membrane surfaces.

Abstract:Microbubbles have drawn increasing attention due to their wide applications in many fileds such as energy production, environmental remediation, and chemical and petrochemical industries. How to facilely and efficiently produce microbubbles is still keeps a great challenge. Herein, we report a Janus ceramic membrane with asymmetric wettability for high-efficient microbubble aeration. The pristine hydrophilic ceramic membrane was firstly modified by 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrimethoxysilane (PFTMS), and then functionalized through single-surface deposition of polydopamine (PDA) to achieve a Janus ceramic membrane with asymmetric surface wettability. Results highlight that the introduction of DA with suitable concentration and modification time is highly efficient for the control of surface wettability. Compared to the pristine and hydrophobic modified ceramic membranes, the use of the Janus ceramic membrane allows a uniform microbubble-in-liquid dispersion system at relatively low transmembrane pressure, and as a result, the dissolved oxygen concentration is effectively increased by 1.3 times. The bubble size is stable at about 160 μm in a 24 h continuous run, and the Janus ceramic membrane shows excellent stability. Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of fabricating Janus ceramic membranes and the advantages of Janus ceramic membranes in microbubble aeration.

Abstract:The present work aims to improve the antifouling properties and hemocompatibility of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes by polydopamine-mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Polydopamine (PDA) was first prepared by the oxidation and self-polymerization in basic aqueous solution. The obtained PDA was used as an additive in the preparation of PVDF membranes via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS). Then poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA), a commonly used zwitterionic polymer, was successfully grafted from the entrapped PDA in membranes through ATRP. The changes in surface morphologies of the PVDF membranes before and after modification were observed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Data of water contact angle measurements indicated that the surface hydrophilicity of the modified membranes was remarkably improved compared with that of the pure PVDF membrane. Results of filtration tests revealed that the water permeability and antifouling properties of the PVDF membranes were both increased after modification. Moreover, the hemocompatibility of the modified PVDF membrane was greatly improved due to the incorporation of zwitterionic brushes as demonstrated by in vitro platelet adhesion. Owing to the chemical reactivity of polydopamine as well as its strong interactions with a wide spectrum of solid substrates, this strategy can be extended to other materials and allows the development of novel functional membranes through such a blending process and secondary treatments.
High performance loose-structured membrane enabled by rapid co-deposition of dopamine and polyamide-amine for dye separation

Abstract:Textile wastewater poses a significant environmental challenge that demands effective treatment. Membrane separation offers a promising solution, with high-flux tight ultrafiltration membranes recognized as an effective technology for dye separation. Polyamide amine (PAMAM), a dendritic macromolecule renowned for its regular structure, high monodispersity, excellent solubility, and tunable molecular weight, has emerged as a promising material for membrane fabrication. This study introduces a novel, eco-friendly, and time-efficient method for preparing polymer composite membranes through one-step co-deposition of dopamine (DA) and PAMAM, predominantly utilizing Michael addition and Schiff base reactions. The incorporation of ammine-rich PAMAM imparts ultra-high hydrophilicity to the membranes (contact angle of 38°), facilitating strong adhesion of water molecules to the membrane surface. The effects of co-deposition time and concentrations of DA and PAMAM on the separation performance of the resulting membranes were systematically investigated. Notably, the optimal membrane demonstrated a high water flux (126.1 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 ), primarily due to the incorporation of PAMAM, which resulted in a looser selective separation layer. Furthermore, the membrane demonstrated excellent rejection of methyl blue (MB) at 98.9 % and low rejection os methyl orange (MO) at 13.2 %, making it well-suited for the selective separation of mixed dyes. Our approach offers a sustainable and technologically advanced solution for addressing resource recovery from textile wastewater.

Abstract:In the present work, self-cleaning membranes of ionic liquid-grafted poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polydopamine-coated TiO2 were prepared through a nonsolvent-induced phase separation method. PDA facilitates the uniform dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles in PVDF substrates; meanwhile, TiO2@PDA core-shell particles and the hydrophilic IL improve the hydrophilicity of PVDF membranes and contribute to the increased average pore size and porosity, significantly improving the pure water permeation flux and dye wastewater flux (the water flux increased to 385.9 Lm-2 h-1). In addition, the combined effect of the positively charged IL and the strongly viscous PDA shell layer enhanced the retention and adsorption of dyes so that the retention and adsorption rates of both anionic and cationic dyes were close to 100%. Notably, the hydrophilic PDA allowed more TiO2 to migrate to the membrane surface during the phase transition; on the other hand, dopamine could promote photodegradation. Therefore, the combined two factors for TiO2@PDA were beneficial to the ultraviolet-catalytic (UV-catalytic) degradation of dyes on the surface of the membrane, leading to >80% degradation rates of various dyes. Thus, the high-efficiency and easy-to-operate wastewater treatment technology provides attractive potential for dye removal and resolution of membrane contamination.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired surface modification draws a lot of attention for improving membrane antifouling property. However, it remains a serious challenge to fabricate a strong hydrophilic layer on the rough surface, preventing the pollutants to adhere to them during the filtration process. Here, a progressive cation-π assembly of polydopamine (PDA) was introduced to boost the antifouling property of the rough polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane, which was fabricated by the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method using alcohol as the non-solvent. Afterward, dopamine and 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SMPS) were co-deposited on the rough membranes via K+-π interactions, leading to more than 20% increment in graft yield compared with DA layer at the same deposition time. In addition, spin-spin relaxation time (T2) of water of DS modified membrane characterized by relaxation NMR decreased 484.9 ms, revealing strong hydration capability on the membrane surface and excellent water hydrophilicity. Benefited by the hydration capability, improved antifouling performance was obtained against natural organic polymers and crude oil, and good oil-in-water emulsions separation property without pressure. The K+-π interactions assistance dopamine assembly indicated a convenient technique for improving the antifouling performance of the rough membrane with a thick and strong hydrophilic layer.

Abstract:In this work, we report on a regenerable and robust adsorptive membrane with superb dynamic adsorption capacity towards dyes prepared by a controllable mussel-inspired co-deposition of dopamine (DA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) on a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) microfiltration membrane. The DA oxidative self-polymerization occurred to form polydopamine for high adhesion with the PVDF membrane. On the other hand, the PEI provided a large number of amino groups with high adsorption ability, and had both Michael addition and Schiff base reaction with DA to induce covalent interaction for high stability. In addition, the co-deposition process was controlled to happen on the membrane surface and inside the membrane bulk pores simultaneously. By these ingenious designs, the prepared adsorptive membrane thus showed high dynamic adsorption capacity (up to 188 mg g−1) and ultra-high removal ratio (>99.9%) towards typical anionic dye of methyl blue. Not only that, the membrane could separate rapidly and selectively anionic dyes from dye mixtures. More importantly, the adsorptive membrane showed highly regenerative ability in NaOH solution (after 6 recovery cycles, the treating efficiency maintained higher than 95%), and good durability with robust resistance in acidic and alkaline environments. This work affords an innovative strategy and insight in fabricating the adsorptive membrane using mussel-inspired co-deposition for organic dye removal in water.
