Abstract:In this paper, we prove the Donoho–Stark uncertainty principle for locally compact quantum groups and characterize the minimizer which are bi-shifts of group-like projections. We also prove the Hirschman–Beckner uncertainty principle for compact quantum groups and discrete quantum groups. Furthermore, we show Hardy's uncertainty principle for locally compact quantum groups in terms of bi-shifts of group-like projections.

Abstract:The classical uncertainty principles deal with functions on abelian groups. In this paper, we discuss the uncertainty principles for finite index subfactors which include the cases for finite groups and finite dimensional Kac algebras. We prove the Hausdorff-Young inequality, Young's inequality, the Hirschman-Beckner uncertainty principle, the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle. We characterize the minimizers of the uncertainty principles and then we prove Hardy's uncertainty principle by using minimizers. We also prove that the minimizer is uniquely determined by the supports of itself and its Fourier transform. The proofs take the advantage of the analytic and the categorial perspectives of subfactor planar algebras. Our method to prove the uncertainty principles also works for more general cases, such as Popa's lambda-lattices, modular tensor categories, etc. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
An entropic uncertainty principle for mixed states

Abstract:The entropic uncertainty principle in the form proven by Maassen and Uffink yields a fundamental inequality that is prominently used in many places all over the field of quantum information theory. In this work, we provide a family of versatile generalizations of this relation. Our proof methods build on a deep connection between entropic uncertainties and interpolation inequalities for the doubly stochastic map that links probability distributions in two measurements bases. In contrast to the original relation, our generalization also incorporates the von Neumann entropy of the underlying quantum state. These results can be directly used to bound the extractable randomness of a source independent QRNG in the presence of fully quantum attacks, to certify entanglement between trusted parties, or to bound the entanglement of a system with an untrusted environment.

Abstract:This study is concerned with the uncertainty principles which are related to the Weyl-Heisenberg, the SIM(2) and the Affine groups. A general theorem which associates an uncertainty principle to a pair of self-adjoint operators was previously used in finding the minimizers of the uncertainty principles related to various groups, e.g., the one and two-dimensional Weyl-Heisenberg groups, the one-dimensional Affine group, and the two-dimensional similitude group of ℝ2, SIM(2) = ℝ2 ×(ℝ + × SO(2)). In this study the relationship between the affine group in two dimensions and the SIM(2) group is investigated in terms of the uncertainty minimizers. Moreover, we present scale space properties of a minimizer of the SIM(2) group.

Recently, the uncertaintyprinciple in terms of entropy has been extended to the case involving quantumentanglement. With previously obtained quantum information for the particle ofinterest, the outcomes of both non-commuting observables can be predictedprecisely, which greatly generalises the uncertainty relation. Here, weexperimentally investigated the entanglement-assisted entropic uncertaintyprinciple for an entirely optical setup. The uncertainty is shown to be nearzero in the presence of quasi-maximal entanglement. The new uncertaintyrelation is further used to witness entanglement. They provide optimal lower bounds and imply the multidimensional variance-based uncertainty principle. The article concludes with an open conjecture.

Abstract:As a foundation of quantum physics, uncertainty relations describe ultimate limit for the measurement uncertainty of incompatible observables. Traditionally, uncertainty relations are formulated by mathematical bounds for a specific state. Here we present a method for geometrically characterizing uncertainty relations as an entire area of variances of the observables, ranging over all possible input states. We find that for the pair of position and momentum operators, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle points exactly to the attainable area of the variances of position and momentum. Moreover, for finite-dimensional systems, we prove that the corresponding area is necessarily semialgebraic; in other words, this set can be represented via finite polynomial equations and inequalities, or any finite union of such sets. In particular, we give the analytical characterization of the areas of variances of (a) a pair of one-qubit observables and (b) a pair of projective observables for arbitrary dimension, and give the first experimental observation of such areas in a photonic system.

Abstract:Entropic uncertainty relations demonstrate the intrinsic uncertainty of nature from an information-theory perspective. Recently, a quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation for multiple measurements was proposed by Wu $et\ al.$ [Phys Rev A. 106. 062219 (2022)]. Interestingly, the quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation for multiple measurement settings can be further generalized. In this work, we propose two complementary multipartite quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relations and our lower bounds depend on values of complementarity of the observables, (conditional) von-Neumann entropies, Holevo quantities, and mutual information. As an illustration, we provide several typical cases to exhibit that our bounds are tighter and outperform the previous bounds.

Abstract:The uncertainty principle, which gives the constraints on obtaining precise outcomes for incompatible measurements, provides a new vision of the real world that we are not able to realize from the classical knowledge. In recent years, numerous theoretical and experimental developments about the new forms of the uncertainty principle have been achieved. Among these efforts, one attractive goal is to find tighter bounds of the uncertainty relation. Here, using an all optical setup, we experimentally investigate a most recently proposed form of uncertainty principle-the fine-grained uncertainty relation assisted by a quantum memory. The experimental results on the case of two-qubit state with maximally mixed marginal demonstrate that the fine-graining method can help to get a tighter bound of the uncertainty relation. Our results might contribute to further understanding and utilizing of the uncertainty principle.

Abstract:The uncertainty principle, first introduced by Heisenberg in inertial frames, clearly distinguishes quantum theories from classical mechanics. In noninertial frames, its information-theoretic expressions, namely, entropic uncertainty relations, have been extensively studied through delocalized quantum fields, and localization of the quantum fields were discussed as well. However, infeasibility of measurements applied on a delocalized quantum field due to the finite size of measurement apparatuses is left unexplained. Therefore, physical clarification of a quantum protocol revealing entropic uncertainty relations still needs investigation. Building on advances in quantum field theories and theoretical developments in entropic uncertainty relations, we demonstrate a relativistic protocol of an uncertainty game in the presence of localized fermionic quantum fields inside cavities. Moreover, a novel lower bound for entropic uncertainty relations with multiple quantum memories is given in terms of the Holevo quantity, which implies how acceleration affects uncertainty relations.

Abstract:The uncertainty principle is deemed as one of cornerstones in quantum mechanics, and exploring its lower limit of uncertainty will be helpful to understand the principle's nature. In this study, we propose a generalized entropic uncertainty relation for arbitrary multiple-observable in multipartite system, and further derive a tighter lower bound by considering Holevo quality and mutual information. Importantly, we detailedly discuss the proposed uncertainty relations and quantum coherence in the context of Schwarzschild space-time. It is interesting to find that Hawking radiation will damage the coherence of the physically accessible region and increase the uncertainty. Furthermore, we argue that the properties of the uncertainty in Schwarzschild space-time can be explained from the systems' purity and the information redistribution of the different regions. Therefore, it is believed that our findings provide the generalized entropic uncertainty relations in multipartite systems, which may facilitate us deeper understanding of quantumness and information paradox of the black holes.

Abstract:We study entropic uncertainty relations by using stepwise linear functions and quadratic functions. Two kinds of improved uncertainty lower bounds are constructed: the state-independent one based on the lower bound of Shannon entropy and the tighter state-dependent one based on the majorization techniques. The analytical results for qubit and qutrit systems with two or three measurement settings are explicitly derived, with detailed examples showing that they outperform the existing bounds. The case with the presence of quantum memory is also investigated.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of (renormalized) quantum uncertainty and reveal its basic features. In terms of this quantity, we completely characterize the minimum and maximum quantum uncertainty states for qubit systems involving Pauli matrices. It turns out that the minimum quantum uncertainty states consists of both certain pure states and certain mixed states, in sharp contrast to the case of conventional Heisenberg uncertainty relation. The maximum quantum uncertainty states are H-type magic states arising from the stabilizer formalism of quantum computation, and can be obtained from minimum quantum uncertainty states via the T-gate.

Abstract:We generalize, improve and unify theorems of Rumin, and Maassen--Uffink about classical entropies associated to quantum density matrices. These theorems refer to the classical entropies of the diagonals of a density matrix in two different bases. Thus they provide a kind of uncertainty principle. Our inequalities are sharp because they are exact in the high-temperature or semi-classical limit.

Abstract:Quantum states with minimum or maximum uncertainty are of special significance due to their extreme properties. Celebrated examples are coherent states induced from certain Lie groups and intelligent states for various uncertainty relations. In this work, by virtue of the Maassen-Uffink entropic uncertainty relation, we introduce an entropic quantifier of uncertainty and use it to characterize several important families of states in the stabilizer formalism of quantum computation. More specifically, we show that the stabilizer states and -type magic states stand at the two extremes of the entropic quantifier of uncertainty: The former are precisely the minimum entropic uncertainty states, while the latter are precisely the maximum entropic uncertainty states. Moreover, interpolating between the above two extremes, the -type magic states are the saddle points of the entropic quantifier of uncertainty. These entropic characterizations reveal some intrinsic features of stabilizer states, - and -type magic states, and cast novel light on the resource-theoretic viewpoint of regarding the stabilizer states as free states and the -type magic states as the most precious source states in the stabilizer quantum theory.

Abstract: Uncertainty principle, a fundamental principle in quantum physics, has been studied intensively via various uncertainty inequalities. Here we derive an uncertainty equality in terms of linear entropy, and show that the sum of uncertainty in complementary local bases is equal to a fixed quantity. We also introduce a measure of correlation in a bipartite state, and show that the sum of correlations revealed in a full set of complementary bases is equal to the total correlation in the bipartite state. The surprising simple equality relations we obtain imply that the study on uncertainty principle and correlations can rely on the use of linear entropy, a simple quantity that is very convenient for calculation.

Abstract:Quantum nonlocality and the uncertainty principle are two fundamental cornerstones of quantum theory, reflecting totally different aspects that distinguish it from classical theory. However, Oppenheim and Wehner introduced fine-grained uncertainty relations (FGURs) to account for the degree of quantum nonlocality. In the simplest Bell scenario, they showed that the quantum nonlocality measured by the maximal violation of some Bell inequality was determined by the FGUR. Along this line of research, we first derive explicit FGURs with general weights about probability distributions of two general projective measurements on local systems. Then we split those joint probabilities of Bell inequalities into a single-party conditional probability and the remaining joint probabilities so that the weighted FGURs can be applied straightforwardly to obtain the maximal violation in various scenarios ranging from bipartite, tripartite, to a complete set of multipartite Bell inequalities. Furthermore, in the bipartite scenario, the exact correlation boundary can be shown to be solely determined by our weighted local FGURs.
