Abstract:Iron-based aqueous redox flow batteries (IBA-RFBs) represent a promising solution for long-duration energy storage, supporting the integration of intermittent renewable energy into the grid, thanks to their commendable safety profile and cost-effectiveness. Membranes, serving as pivotal components in redox flow batteries (RFBs), play a crucial role in facilitating ion conduction for internal circuit formation while preventing the crossover of redox-active species. Given their direct impact on RFB performance and cost, membranes merit considerable attention. This review provides an overview of recent advancements in membranes tailored for IBA-RFBs. Initially, it delineates the operational mechanisms of various IBA-RFB configurations. Subsequently, it delves into key performance metrics for evaluating membrane efficacy, dissecting the intricate interplay between membrane performance and overall IBA-RFB efficiency. Building upon this foundation, the review spotlights recent breakthroughs in ion exchange membranes and porous membranes designed specifically for IBA-RFBs, showcasing their remarkable ability to bolster battery efficiency, cycling stability, and cost-effectiveness. Lastly, this review outlines future directions for membrane development, offering some insights to propel the widespread adoption of IBA-RFBs on a large scale.

Abstract:Zinc-based flow batteries receive widespread attention due to their advantages of low cost and high energy density. However, zinc dendrites are easy to appear during the charge process, pierce the membrane and thus destroy the battery, which seriously restrict its further development. In this article, MFI-type zeolite nanosheets (ns-MFIs) with high mechanical strength and hydrophobicity are in situ introduced to porous polymer membranes, which spontaneously form turnup fish-scale-like structure through the one-step phase inversion/surface segregation process. This special structure well disperses mechanical energy to provide effective protection characteristics to resist the penetration of zinc dendrites, and meanwhile promotes the uniform zinc depositions on the electrode by alleviating the water migration and accelerating zincate ion diffusion, so as to prolong the cycle life of the battery for more than 600 cycles, which is 4 times and 2.5 times longer than the commercial Nafion 212 and pristine porous polymer membrane, respectively. Moreover, the subnano size pores and high-aspect-ratio of ns-MFIs afford membranes extra ion sieving ability and transport area for the charging-balancing ions OH- to ensure superior battery performance, delivering an average coulombic efficiency (CE) of similar to 98.5%, voltage efficiency (VE) of similar to 83.2%, and energy efficiency (EE) of similar to 81.9% at 80 mA/cm(2).
Nanoscale Solid Superacid-Coupled Polybenzimidazole Membrane with High Ion Selectivity for Flow Batteries

Abstract:Nanoscale solid superacid SO42–/ZrO2/WO3 is coupled into imidazole-hydroxyl-quaternary ammonium co-functionalized polybenzimidazole (PG112) to address the trade-off effect of membrane for large-scale flow battery application. Nanoscale SO42–/ZrO2/WO3 particles with high sulfonic groups are dispersed in membrane as redox-active ion barriers and proton carriers, which mitigate the electrolyte crossover and maintain high ion conductivity. The VO2+ permeability of the prepared membrane (7.86 × 10–10 cm2 s–1) is significantly lower than those of PG112 (3.93 × 10–9 cm2 s–1) and Nafion 212 (7.76 × 10–8 cm2 s–1) membranes. The vanadium flow battery with this membrane exhibits a longer self-discharge duration time of 231 h compared with Nafion 212 (35 h) and PG112 (88 h) membranes. High coulombic efficiencies of 97.5–99.2% at 40–120 mA cm–2 are obtained for the prepared membrane, which are higher than those for Nafion 212 (78.0–92.8%) and PG112 membranes (96.2–98.6%). Stable cycle performance and low retention capacity are also observed, suggesting the excellent chemical stability of the prepared membrane in vanadium flow battery operation. This work provides a prospective and applicable membrane to enhance the performance of flow battery.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are becoming an increasingly important means to power a green and renewable future. Advances in RFBs require an understanding of the construction of ion/molecular-selective transport nanochannels in high-performance and low-cost membranes for the application of large-scale energy storage. Enabling the control of ion/molecular transport at nanometer scales can achieve numerous functions, such as selectivity, conductivity, stability, and electrochemical performance, which result from diverse interactions between the ion/molecule and nanochannels. This paper presents an overview of the research and development of membranes with ion/molecular-selective transport nanochannels for RFB applications and particularly focuses on the basic principles, namely solvated ion/molecular sizes, functional groups, nanoscale confined dimensions, interactions, and environmental factors during ion/molecular-selective transport in nanochannels on the basis of their chemical and physical structures. Finally, we provide insights into the challenges and possible future research directions in the development of next-generation membranes for RFBs.

Abstract:Fabrication of ion-conducting membranes with continuous sub-nanometer channels holds fundamental importance for flow batteries in achieving safe integration of renewable energy into grids. Self-standing covalent organic polymer (COP) membranes provide feasibility due to their rapid and selective ion transport. However, the development of a scale-up possible, mechanically robust and chemically stable membranes remains a significant challenge. Herein, using irreversible strong secondary amine linkage, we propose a self-standing COP membrane with sub-nanometer pores ranging from 4.5 to 6.4 Å, by a simple and efficient in-situ polymerization approach. This membrane exhibits enhanced selectivity for proton and vanadium ions, especially excellent electrochemical stability, delivering an energy efficiency of over 80% at the current density of 200 mA cm-2 over 1000 cycles for an all-vanadium redox flow battery (VFB). This study provides novel insights for COP-based ion-sieving membranes in sustainable energy fields.

Abstract:Advanced ion conductive membranes are fabricated by introducing sulfonated piperazine triazine framework (s‐pCTF) into sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) . The exterior attraction from the grafted SO3H and the interior proton‐selective channels within s‐pCTF is simultaneously beneficial to fast proton‐selective transport. Benefiting from the synergistic effect, the optimal hybrid membranes exhibit ameliorated physiochemical properties and battery performance. Ion conductive membranes (ICMs) with robust sub‐2‐nm channels show high proton transport rate in flow battery, but it remains a great challenge to precisely control the ion sieving of the membranes. Herein, as a promising proton‐selective carrier, sulfonated piperazine covalent triazine framework (s‐pCTF) with the channel size of ≈1.5 nm and abundant fast proton hopping sites is introduced into sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) to fabricate advanced ICM for vanadium flow battery (VFB) application. The interior protoplasmic channels of s‐pCTF demonstrate significant Donnan exclusion effect, resulting in a high proton/vanadium ion selectivity in theory (6.22 × 105). Meanwhile, the nitrogen‐rich sub‐2‐nm channels yield fast proton highway, and exterior‐grafted sulfonic acid groups further facilitate the proton transfer. By regulating the ion sieving and proton conductivity, the optimal hybrid membrane exhibits synchronously improved battery performance with an enhanced energy efficiency (92.41% to 78.53% at 40–200 mA cm−2) and long‐term stability for 900 cycles over 400 h (EE: 87.2–85% at 120 mA cm−2), outperforming pure SPEEK and Nafion212 membranes. This study validates the applicability of organic porous CTF with sub‐2‐nm channels and desired functionality in ICMs for high‐performance VFB application.

Abstract:A chitosan‐based ion‐conducting membrane is meticulously designed and successfully integrated into flow battery applications. The Cu2+ cross‐linked hydrogen bonding network of the membrane facilitates OH− conduction by promoting proton transfer (Grotthuss mechanism), resulting in efficient OH− transport. This enables the alkaline zinc–iron flow battery to operate with high efficiency at high current densities, paving the way for efficient ion separation and energy storage. The development of membranes with rapid and selective ionic transport is imperative for diverse electrochemical energy conversion and storage systems, including fuel cells and flow batteries. However, the practical application of membranes is significantly hindered by their limited conductivity and stability under strong alkaline conditions. Herein, a unique composite membrane decorated with functional Cu2+ cross‐linked chitosan (Cts‐Cu‐M) is reported and their high hydroxide ion conductivity and stability in alkaline flow batteries are demonstrated. The underlying hydroxide ions transport of the membrane through Cu2+ coordinated nano‐confined channels with abundant hydrogen bonding network via Grotthuss (proton hopping) mechanism is proposed. Consequently, the Cts‐Cu‐M membrane achieves high hydroxide ion conductivity with an area resistance of 0.17 Ω cm2 and enables an alkaline zinc‐based flow battery to operate at 320 mA cm−2, along with an energy efficiency of ≈80%. Furthermore, the membrane enables the battery for 200 cycles of long‐cycle stability at a current density of 200 mA cm−2. This study offers an in‐depth understanding of ion transport for the design and preparation of high‐performance membranes for energy storage devices and beyond.

Abstract:Membrane with ordered channels is the key to controlling ion sieving and proton conductivity in flow batteries. However, it remains a great challenge for finely controlling the nanochannels of polymeric membranes. Herein, two types of acid-stable Zr-metal organic framework (MOF-801 and MOF-808) with variable pore structures and channel properties are introduced as fillers into a non-fluorinated sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). The membrane incorporated with MOF-801 of a smaller triangular window (≈3.5 Å) successfully translates the molecular sieving property into the flow battery membrane, resulting in enhanced coulombic efficiency (98.5–99.2%) at 40–120 mA cm−2 compared with the pristine SPEEK membrane (97.1–98.5%). In contrast, more protophilic internal interconnected channels of MOF-808 yield faster proton highway, leading to a significant increase of voltage efficiency (93.7–84.1%) at 40–120 mA cm−2 compared with the pristine SPEEK membrane (91.7–78.9%). By regulating the ion sieving and proton conductivity, MOF-801/MOF-808 binary composite membrane exhibits synchronously improved performance in the vanadium redox flow battery system. The revealed structure–property relationship in the Zr-MOFs-based membranes provides a general guideline to design new proton exchange membranes with ordered channels for flow battery application.

Membranes with Well‐Defined Selective Layer Regulated by Controlled Solvent Diffusion for High Power Density Flow Battery

Abstract:Membranes with precise control of selective layer are designed and prepared by adjusting diffusion of solvents. Combining experiments and theoretical calculations, the formation mechanism of ion conductive membranes prepared by a non‐solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method is found to be related to internal diffusion flux of solvent to the non‐solvent bath and external diffusion flux of non‐solvent to the casting solution. By regulating the internal and external diffusion rates via a two‐step NIPS method, a series of polybenzimidazole (PBI) porous membranes with independently controlled thin selective skin layers and highly porous support layers are fabricated, which achieve a simultaneous improvement in ion selectivity and proton conductivity. A vanadium flow battery assembled with a PBI membrane demonstrates an energy efficiency of 80% at a current density of 220 mA cm−2, which is the highest value among the reported PBI membranes. This provides a simple and effective way to fabricate membranes with well‐defined morphologies.
Tailoring Porous Structure in Non-Ionic Polymer Membranes Using Multiple Templates for Low-Cost Iron-Lead Single-Flow Batteries

Abstract:Porous ion-selective membranes are promising alternatives for the expensive perfluorosulfonic acid membranes in redox flow batteries. In this work, novel non-ionic porous polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoro propylene membranes are designed for iron-lead single-flow batteries. The membranes are prepared using a multiple template approach, involving simultaneously using polyethylene glycol and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as pore-forming templates. Their porous structure is finely tuned by adjusting the ratio of the two templates. As a result, dual-porous membranes bearing both macro and micropores are obtained. The H3520 membrane with modified porous structure attains a high proton conductivity of 43.5 mS·cm-1 and a relatively low ferric ion diffusion constant (8.61 × 10-8 cm2·min-1) and demonstrates the best balance between these performance-determining parameters (selectivity 5.04 × 105 S·min·cm-3, higher than that of the N115 membrane). Besides, performance tests of the iron-lead single-flow single cells equipped with the dual-porous membranes show a high energy efficiency, exceeding 87.2% at its rated current density, and outstanding cycling stability over 200 charge-discharge cycles. Altogether, the mixed template method presents a promising strategy to prepare high-performance and low-cost non-ionic membranes for redox flow batteries.

Abstract:Flow batteries are one of the most promising techniques for stationary energy storage applications, benefiting from their high safety, high efficiency and long cycle life. As a key component of flow batteries, an ion conductive membrane (ICM) plays a vital role in isolating active species from anolyte and catholyte, while transferring charge careers to complete the internal circuit. Therefore, the final battery performance is largely determined by the properties of ICMs such as ions selectivity, conductivity and stability. Thus, transport behavior of different ions through ICMs will be critical to the design of high-performance flow batteries. Plenty of membranes with different structures have been developed in flow batteries, however, the ions transport mechanism in different membranes was rarely summarized. In this review, a brief introduction on ICMs will be firstly given and then the ions transport mechanism in different membranes will be summarized in detail. This review is expected to provide important guidance for the design of membranes for flow batteries.

Abstract:Ion conductive membranes with rapid and selective ion transport are in high demand for high-power energy storage devices. Surface periodic Turing microstructures are scientifically compelling for their high specific surface area which can promote ion transport of membranes. Here, high-conductivity thin Turing membranes prepared by Co2+ coordination with polybenzimidazole (OPBI) are designed and their efficient ion transport in the alkaline zinc-iron flow battery (AZIFB) is demonstrated. In this design, the Turing structure increases the effective contact area with the electrolyte, and the 7.9 mu m thickness shortens the transmembrane pathway for ions. Molecular dynamics simulations further show that Co2+-coordination enlarges the inner-chain volume of membranes and forms continuous water channels for rapid ion transport. The boosting effect of membranes with high ion conductivity is proven by the peak power density and energy efficiency of the AZIFB, which shows an ultrahigh peak power density of 1147 mW cm(-2) and demonstrates an energy efficiency of 80% even at a high current density of 200 mA cm(-2).
Functional Molecular Cross‐linked Zeolite Nanosheets Heighten Ion Selectivity and Conductivity of Flow Battery Membrane

Abstract:Membranes with high ion selectivity and conductivity are critical for the wide application of electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. Herein, functional molecular cross-linked two-dimensional zeolite nanosheets (ZN) with -NH2 and -SO3H groups are prepared and incorporated into sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) polymer matrix. These embedded nanosheets act as strong barrier to vanadium ions, while their internal pores provide transport channels for protons. In addition, the side functional groups grafted on ZN not only effectively enhance the surface affinity, but also bind and arrange the sulfonic acid groups of the polymer matrix to construct a continuous fast proton transfer pathway along the interface between SPEEK and ZN. Consequently, the hybrid membranes exhibit synchronously enhanced conductive-ion selectivity and impressive performance with coulombic efficiency (CE) of similar to 99.0% and energy efficiency (EE) of similar to 85.0% at 120 mA cm(-2), which is much higher than these of pure SPEEK (CE: similar to 97.8%, EE: similar to 78.4%) and Nafion 212 membranes (CE: similar to 96.3%, EE: similar to 80.1%). This functional-designed hybrid approach provides a general strategy to develop high-performance proton conductive membranes for energy-related applications.
Zwitterionic Channels Within Covalent Organic Frameworks Facilitate Proton-Selective Transport for Flow Battery Membrane

Abstract:Flow batteries demand for ion conductive membranes (ICMs) with high ion selectivity to achieve efficient energy conversion. Herein, we engineered a cysteine-modified covalent organic framework (Cys-COF) by a Thiol-ene click reaction. As a promising proton carrier, the incorporation of the Cys-COF with sulfonated poly(ether ketone) (SPEEK) yields advanced ICMs for vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). The zwitterionic cysteine groups anchored on the nanochannel walls simultaneously narrowed the pore size and ameliorated the protophilicity of Cys-COF, resulting in improved vanadium permeating resistance and proton conductivity. As a result, the optimal membrane demonstrated synchronized improvements in coulombic efficiency (95.01 %-98.84 %), voltage efficiency (95.15 %-77.84 %) and energy efficiency (90.41 %-76.94 %) with the current densities ranging from 40 to 200 mA cm(-2). Regarding stability test, it achieved exceptional energy efficiency (similar to 84.3 %) over 1100 cycles and 550 h at the constant current density of 120 mA cm(-2), outperforming pure polymer membrane and Nafion 212.

Abstract:Redox flow batteries (RFBs) have great potential for long‐duration grid‐scale energy storage. Ion conducting membranes are a crucial component in RFBs, allowing charge‐carrying ions to transport while preventing the cross‐mixing of redox couples. Commercial Nafion membranes are widely used in RFBs, but their unsatisfactory ionic and molecular selectivity as well as high costs limit the performance and the widespread deployment of this technology. To extend the longevity and reduce the cost of RFB systems, inexpensive ion‐selective membranes are highly desired that concurrently deliver low ionic resistance and high selectivity towards redox‐active species. In this work, high‐performance RFB membranes are fabricated from blends of carboxylate‐ and amidoxime‐functionalized polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) that exploit the beneficial properties of both polymers. The enthalpy‐driven formation of cohesive interchain interactions, including hydrogen bonds and salt bridges, facilitates the microscopic miscibility of the blends, while ionizable functional groups within the sub‐nanometer pores allow optimization of membrane ion transport functions. Near-frictionless Ion Transport from Rigid Nanoconfinement by Triazine Framework Membranes

Abstract:Many separation, purification processes and electrochemical technologies such as water electrolysers1,2, fuel cells3,4, redox flow battery5,6 and ion-capture electrodialysis7 hinge on the development of low-resistance and high-selectivity ion-transport membranes (SIMs). The transport of ions through SIMs depends on the overall energy barrier which are imposed by the collective interplay of pore architecture and pore-analytes interaction8,9. However, it remains challenging to design efficient, scalable and low-cost SIMs with low-energy-barrier ion channels. Here we pursue a strategy to approach the diffusion limit of ions in water for large-area free-standing synthetic membranes using covalently bonded polymer frameworks with rigidity-confined ion channels. The near-frictionless ion flow is synergistically fulfilled by robust micropore confinement and multi-interaction between ion and membrane, which afford, for instance, a Na+ diffusion coefficient of is 1.18×10-9 square meter per second, close to the value in pure water at infinite dilution and an area-specific membrane resistance as low as 0.17 Ohm square centimeter. We demonstrate the great efficacy of membranes in fast-charging aqueous organic redox flow batteries that deliver both high energy efficiency and high capacity utilization at extremely high current densities (up to 500 milliampere per square centimeter), while avoiding crossover-induced capacity decay. This membrane design concept may be broadly applicable to membranes for a wide range of electrochemical devices and for precise molecular separation.
Cross-linked Sulfonated Polyimide Membranes with Excellent Proton Selectivity and Ultra-Long Cycle Life for Vanadium Flow Batteries

Abstract:The membrane always plays as a crucial component of vanadium flow battery (VFB), and its proton selectivity and stability determine battery efficiencies and life. Herein, a series of permselective cross-linked sulfonated polyimide (PFSPI-DNBC) membranes are constructed by using crown ether with proper cavity size as cross-linker to break the trade-off effect between proton conductance and vanadium ions blocking. In contrast to commerical Nafion 212 membrane, the as-optimized PFSPI-DNBC-15 membrane reveals outstanding comprehensive properties: same area resistance (0.21 Ω cm2), excellent vanadium ions blocking (0.44×10–7 cm2 min–1) and 15.91 times higher proton selectivity (5.41×105 S min cm–3). Furthermore, the PFSPI-DNBC-15 membrane shows higher Coulomb efficiencies (CEs: 97.45%-98.35%) and energy efficiencies (EEs: 68.58%-87.76%) compared with Nafion 212 membrane (CEs: 92.74%-95.26%; EEs: 67.39%-81.28%) at 100-280 mA cm–2. Exhilaratingly, the PFSPI-DNBC-15 membrane shows remarkable chemical structural and morphological stabilities over 2280 VFB cycles at 180 mA cm–2. The internal reasons of improved stability of PFSPI-DNBC-15 membrane are described by simulation calculations. To sum up, the PFSPI-DNBC-15 membrane possesses a bright application prospect in VFB.
Thin-film composite membrane breaking the trade-off between conductivity and selectivity for a flow battery

Abstract:Abstract A membrane with both high ion conductivity and selectivity is critical to high power density and low-cost flow batteries, which are of great importance for the wide application of renewable energies. The trade-off between ion selectivity and conductivity is a bottleneck of ion conductive membranes. In this paper, a thin-film composite membrane with ultrathin polyamide selective layer is found to break the trade-off between ion selectivity and conductivity, and dramatically improve the power density of a flow battery. As a result, a vanadium flow battery with a thin-film composite membrane achieves energy efficiency higher than 80% at a current density of 260 mA cm −2 , which is the highest ever reported to the best of our knowledge. Combining experiments and theoretical calculation, we propose that the high performance is attributed to the proton transfer via Grotthuss mechanism and Vehicle mechanism in sub-1 nm pores of the ultrathin polyamide selective layer.

Abstract:High-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) demand efficient and selective transport of lithium ions. Inspired by ion channels in biology systems, lithium-ion channels are constructed by chemically modifying the nanoporous channels of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with negatively charged sulfonate groups. Analogous to the biological ion channels, such pendant anionic moieties repel free anions while allowing efficient transport of cations through the pore channels. Implementing such MOFs as an electrolyte membrane doubly enhances the lithium-ion transference number, alleviates concentration polarization, and affords striking durability of high-rate LIBs. This work demonstrates an ion-selective material design that effectively tunes the ion-transport behavior and could assist with more efficient operation of LIBs.
