Abstract:The migration of groundwater in rock and soil can appear as abnormalities in geoelectric fields. It is therefore important to study the characteristics of seepage in porous media by measuring the geoelectric field signatures. In this study, a physical model with layers of sand and clay was constructed and an electrical resistivity meter was used to examine the changes in the geoelectric field parameters during the infiltration process. The results show that the infiltration could be detected based on the geoelectric signatures including temporal changes through the spontaneous potential, excitation currents, and apparent resistivity. Specifically, the spontaneous potential was reduced by 100 to 200 mV when the water reaches an electrode. During the second water injection in the experiment, the measured spontaneous potential of all the electrodes recovered to the previous extreme values that range from -200 to -550 mV, thus indicating a "memory" effect. With stepwise changes in the excitation current, it was possible to determine the seepage velocity in sand and clay layer. The apparent resistivity is reduced to less than 400 omega m when the infiltration reaches the electrodes. These results indicate the potential for real-time monitoring of water flow.

Abstract:Water seepage in rock and soil is a main inducing factor of accidents in many engineering fields such as tunnel engineering, mineral resource exploitation, and rock slopes. Water migration in rock and soil can lead to abnormal geoelectric fields due to the effects of diffusion, adsorption, filtration, and oxidation. This makes it possible to research the seepage law in porous media by measuring the response of geoelectric fields in this process. In this work, we carry out a physical simulation experiment to study the geoelectric field response occurring in the water-migration process. By analyzing the response of first electric potential, spontaneous potentials, and exciting current, we find that both the spontaneous potential and exciting current can reflect the change of seepage flow during the water-infiltration process. The exciting current and first electric potential is applicable to the seepage research on heterogeneous rock and soil, for they can accurately determine the position and velocity of the seepage. Real-time apparent resistivity not only indicates the infiltration area but also reflects the relative water content, i.e., the seepage reached saturation along with the reduction of the apparent resistivity.

Abstract:Rainfall is one of the important factors causing the failure of slope, such as the occurrence of transverse cracks and localized slumps. The process of rainfall seepage was studied with an indoor soil slope model based on the Network Parallel Electrical Method. The responses of geoelectric-field parameters were analyzed to infer the evolution process of rainfall seepage path. The variations of geoelectric-field parameters also contribute to our understanding of the behavior of groundwater seepage. The results show that the seepage velocity and seepage position of groundwater can be obtained according to the exciting current and primary field potential response characteristics of seepage field. The primary field potential, exciting current, spontaneous potential and apparent resistivity are sensitive to the water flow. When the position of the seepage surface reaches a certain electrode, the spontaneous potential, primary field potential and exciting current rapidly increase, while the apparent resistivity decreases gradually. The result of apparent resistivity can reflect the variation of the water content in the 3D structural soil slope and the position of infiltration surface. The results of study can provide the theoretical basis for studying the behavior of moisture flow in soil slope under rainfall condition.
Geoelectric Response of Porous Media in Water and Grout Injection Processes

Abstract:Significant changes in spontaneous potential and exciting currents are observed during water and grout injection in a simulated porous media. Obvious correlations between the seepage flow field and the electric field in the porous media are identified.In this work, a detailed experimental study of geoelectric field variation occurring in water migration was reported by analyzing water and grout injection processes in a simulated porous media. The spontaneous potential varies linearly with the thickness of unsaturated porous media. Very interestingly, the spontaneous potential generated in the second grout injection exhibits some"memory" of previous grouting paths. The decreases in spontaneous potential observed during grout injection is very probably due to that the spontaneous potential variations are primarily caused by electro-filtration potential, as indicated by the far larger viscosity of grout compared to that of water. The geoelectric response can be utilized to effectively identify the grouting paths in water-bearing rocks.

A Study on Modeling a Deep Sand Geothermal Field in South China

Abstract:It is crucial for financial providers, investment groups, resource developers and exploration companies to rate a new geothermal project in the respect of resource and reserve. The existing volumetric method is generally constrained by limited information when projects at the early stage of development. The objective of this study is to estimate the potential of a geothermal field by a refined geological model and 3D numerical temperature model. We establish a fine geological model of a geothermal field in South China and thereby calculate the conductive 3D numerical temperature model. Based on a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of borehole measured data and well-log data, the regional variation and spatial distribution of thermal and petrophysical properties are both incorporated in the geological model. The results show that the Neogene and Quaternary strata in the study area have an average porosity of 36% and an average rock thermal conductivity of 3.15 W (m K)−1, the Weizhou Formation have an average porosity of 29% and an average rock thermal conductivity of 2.54 W (m K)−1, the Liushagang Formation have an average porosity of 22 % and an average thermal conductivity of 2.21 W (m K)−1, the Changliu Formation have an average porosity of 13% and an average thermal conductivity of 2.75 W (m K)−1. Based on the fine geothermal geological model, the heat is assumed to be driven by conduction, and the results show that the bottom temperature of the Weizhou Formation in the hydrothermal sandstone reservoir is 96-168 degrees Celsius, and the high temperature area is concentrated near the down-thrown side of the fault, indicating that the geothermal resources are favorable area and the geothermal energy is 7.89 × 1014 J.

Abstract:Difficulties related to seepage are frequently encountered in tunnel design and construction, especially in deep-buried tunnels. Nowadays, analytical solutions of steady seepage fields for deep-buried tunnel usually assume that the surrounding rock mass is homogeneous. In this study, analytical solutions of a steady seepage field for a deep-buried tunnel with grouting ring considering anisotropic flow are proposed. The proposed analytical solutions are verified by numerical simulations and parameter analysis are carried out. Results show that the seepage field of surrounding rocks around the deep buried circular tunnel is no longer uniformly distributed and presents elliptical distribution. The change of permeability coefficient of the lining structure has a great influence on the hydraulic head when the difference between permeability coefficient of lining structure and surrounding rock is not very large. The results show that the size of the grouting ring has more significant influence on the grouting effect.

Abstract:Geophysical methods have been increasingly used to characterize the Earth's critical zone (CZ) and monitor hydrological processes occurring within it. For a quantitative interpretation, geophysical studies of CZ materials are necessary, and thus require more sophisticated laboratory setups. In this study, we develop a hydrogeophysical soil column system to measure key hydraulic and electrical properties of regolith in CZs. The developed soil column system consists of two components: (a) a novel hydrogeophysical probe that measures pore water pressure and electrical potential in soils and (b) a cylindrical cell to hold soil samples. The system can be arranged to perform both saturated flow and drainage tests. The saturated flow test is similar to the traditional constant head experiment for determining the hydraulic conductivity and streaming potential coupling coefficient. The drainage tests can produce transient responses of cumulative overflow, pore water pressure, and streaming potential. These transient data can be used to estimate the sample's electrical and hydraulic properties with the coupled, stochastic hydrogeophysical inversion. A sand sample is used to demonstrate the procedures of applying this new system. The measured saturated hydraulic conductivity and streaming potential coupling coefficient of the sand are within the typical ranges of sands reported in the literature. The inversion‐estimated soil parameters can well reproduce the measured transient responses during the drainage test of the sample. Moreover, the inversion‐estimated saturated properties are in good agreement with those independently measured in the saturated flow test, showing the robustness of the developed system. A novel hydrogeophysical probe is developed to measure both pore water pressure and electrical potential in soils. The new probes are integrated into a soil column to determine key hydrogeophysical properties of soils. Experimental results of a sand sample show the effectiveness and robustness of the integrated soil column system.

Stochastic Seepage Field Studies on Main Embankment of Yangtse Rive in Southern Jingzhou Zone of China

Abstract:Implemented, based on practical engineering projects, is a statistical analysis of strata soil characteristics and geological columns sampled from the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China. Furthermore, it was verified under Kolomogorov-Smirnov theory that this assumption, namely, the statistical hypothesis of Gaussian probability distribution for random permeability tensors of soils to be submitted into the stochastic seepage field simulation would be accepted by the statistical testing. By the help of numerical analysis for stochastic seepage fields simulations using three dimensional finite element method as well as the rationality of simulated stochastic results, investigated were various statistical characteristics and random natures in random seepage fields of the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China. Meanwhile, the developed model was also examined through statistical testing. Especially, as a stochastic boundary condition, the random variation of upstream and downstream water level was taken into account of three-dimensional finite element model in practical analysis for the random seepage field simulations, by which, it has been realized deeply to describe disturbed effects of the boundary randomness due to variability of downstream and upstream water level over variabilities of simulated results presented by vector series of the random seepage field. Furthermore, the function of some safeguards to set up against the seepage problem, such as sheet-pile breakwater and catch-water, as the turbulence of complex boundary condition together with the effects of variability of soil permeability has been analyzed for description of influence of them on the hydraulic potential distributed in the random seepage field and the random evolution of stochastic seepage field under these comprehensive aspects has also been compared with the result obtained by determinate analysis for the corresponding steady seepage field problem. Philosophy deduced in this paper presents the necessity, feasibility and practicability of employing stochastic studies in seepage field problems. Meanwhile, sensitivities of random seepage field hydraulic gradient and downstream exit height were studied upon the variation of permeability and boundary conditions of the main embankment of Yangtse Rive in southern Jingzhou zone of China, by which, broadened is the research domain on seepage field evolution under uncertain numerical coverage.
Simulation Test for Water Injection and Grouting of Porous Rock Based on Response of Electric Field

Abstract:Carried out water injection and grouting test of porous rock based on response of electric field by large Plexiglas model.It's shown that variation of natural potential and exciting current well reflected the several stages of the test.Natural potential raised slowly but exciting current directly transited a stable value in water injection process before model saturation;however,they rapidly increased to the maximum after saturation and rapidly declined after stopping water injection.Natural potential was significantly reduced while exciting current fast increased in slurry flow diffusion zone.After stopping grouting,natural potential returned to the initial value in the area where slurry did not reached while dropped below the initial value in slurry spreading zone.It can be drawn that natural potential and exciting current have well function of visual representation and flow position indication to fluids,in particular,they well distinguish the water from chemical grout based on comprehensive analysis of these variation and digital image of slurry diffusion position.It can be used to monitor the slurry diffusion and evaluate grouting effects in actual projects.

Energy Sources Part A Recovery Utilization and Environmental Effects

Abstract:The study of the flow behavior in pores, fractures, and pore-fracture dual media plays a crucial role in understanding the mechanisms of sudden water inrush and sand flow. In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted using a custom-made transparent porous model to investigate the flow characteristics of fluids in complex media. Additionally, finite element simulations were employed to explore the flow features at multiple scales. A detailed analysis at the micrometer scale was conducted to examine the variations in the water velocity, volumetric flow rate, Reynolds number, flow field, and permeability under different porosity and pressure drop conditions. The results indicate that within the studied range of flow velocities and pressures, the fluid flow in all the media models adhered to Darcy's law. The improvement in structural connectivity in the random pore model has made the flow channels of fluids in the random pore network more diverse, resulting in an increase in the peak water flow velocity from 4.89E–5 m/s to 4.19E–4 m/s. The fluid accelerated while bypassing the protruding solid particles, resulting in the formation of high-velocity zones in the vicinity. As the pressure drop increases, the volume flow rate of the random dual-medium model with a porosity of 0.6 can increase to 1.01E–9 m 3 /s, with the highest growth rate. We also simulate the fluid flow of a regular dual-medium model at different porosities and find that the permeability rapidly increases from 5.65E–13 m 2 to 1.01E–11 m 2 , demonstrating that the presence of fractures can significantly improve the permeability performance of the medium. The research findings deepen our understanding of the migration behavior of water in complex geological environments and provide theoretical guidance for groundwater resource protection and underground engineering.

Abstract:The seepage of groundwater is a progress of water-rock interaction, so the study of water-rock interaction is very important for environmental problems and engineering application. 3D coupling model in low permeability groundwater environment is established based on the liquid-solid mechanics, and the variable separation method is adopted to get the solution of one-dimension model. The variation laws of pressure and permeability coefficient with distance and time are obtained with a practical example shown. The values predicted by the model are in good agreement with the measured values which demonstrates the applicability and validity of the model.

Abstract:Geophysical technologies are very effective in environmental, engineering and groundwater applications. Parameters of delineating nature of near-surface materials such as compressional-wave velocity, shear-wave velocity can be obtained using shallow seismic methods. Electric methods are primary approaches for investigating groundwater and detecting leakage. Both of methods are applied to detect embankment in hope of obtaining evidences of the strength and moisture inside the body. A technological experiment has done for detecting and discovering the hidden troubles in the embankment of Yangtze River, Songzi, Hubei, China in 2003. Surface-wave and DC multi-channel array resistivity sounding techniques were used to detect hidden trouble inside and under dike like pipe-seeps. This paper discusses the exploration strategy and the effect of geological characteristics. A practical approach of combining seismic and electric resistivity measurements was applied to locate potential pipe-seeps in embankment in the experiment. The method presents a potential leak factor based on the shear-wave velocity and the resistivity of the medium to evaluate anomalies. An anomaly found in a segment of embankment detected was verified, where occurred a pipe-seep during the 98' flooding.

Abstract:<p>Seismoelectric and electroseismic interface responses resulting from the electrokinetic effect are useful to study the properties of subsurface medium. In this article, we investigate the characteristics of these interfacial signals generated at irregular subsurface interfaces considering hydrocarbon exploration scenarios. Adopting several typical models, the electroseismic and seismoelectric wavefields are calculated using the finite-difference frequency domain method. Besides the well-known electroseismic and seismoelectric signals created at a flat interface, the scattered seismic wave and scattered electromagnetic (EM) wave can also be generated by EM and seismic sources at subsurface scattering points, respectively. When an electric source is applied for excitation, the waveforms recorded by horizontally- or vertically-aligned receiver array indicate that electroseismic interface responses nearly do not change with the source locations and can directly delineate the shapes and morphologies of the corresponding interfaces. Simulations of seismoelectric wavefield show that both the interface seismoelectric responses and scattered EM waves display as flat events in the electric record. It is not easy to distinguish them if we do not know the realistic underground structure. Based on simulations, the electroseismic interface responses seem more promising than the seismoelectric interface responses for imaging the subsurface interfaces.</p>

We propose a method for imaging aquifer interfaces using SE waves. The common‐receiver SE gather, generated by multiple sources, is analogous to the exploding‐reflector seismic gather, forming the theoretical foundation of this method. To test this method, two 2D aquifer models are designed to simulate the synthetic common‐receiver SE gather, followed by the application of exploding‐reflector migration. The result shows that the aquifer interface is well imaged by the SE waves. Additionally, laboratory experiments successfully recovering the interfaces of the rocks confirm the validity of the SE imaging method, suggesting its feasible use in real groundwater exploration in the future.

Abstract:The vast majority of geological disasters in loess-covered areas are caused by seepage erosion in loess. Therefore, this paper focuses on the microscopic mechanism of loess seepage erosion, and constructs a loess microstructure model based on particle "core+coat". On this basis, the SEM photos are imported into COMSOL to simulate the micro-scale seepage in the pore domain. Through the actual permeability test, combined with the micro-quantitative information obtained by IPP(Image-pro-plus) and Arcgis, the micro-factors affecting loess permeability are quantitatively analyzed by grey relational analysis. The results show that the dry density affects the porosity of loess and ultimately determines the permeability of loess. Different pore types and proportions lead to different seepage erosion of loess. The erosion process mainly occurs at the junction of pores. The sudden increase of velocity, pressure drop and maximum shear rate at the throat indicate that this area is the main action area of loess seepage erosion. The research results of this paper provide an important theoretical basis for the research and prevention of geological disasters and engineering diseases related to seepage deformation and failure in loess area.

Abstract:Abstract With the rapid development of underwater space construction, the theoretical research is at the initial stage. At present, the theoretical research methods mainly include mirror image method and conformal transformation method. At present, almost all the research objects in analytical research are homogeneous soil layers. However, in practical engineering, soil layers are often distributed in layers. In this study, the seepage field of layered soil layers is analyzed, and the analytical derivation method of seepage field in heterogeneous media based on traditional conformal transformation method is given, which is verified by numerical simulation. The hydraulic head loss of the medium with better permeability in shallow layer is very small, and the streamline is vertically distributed. In the weak interlayer, the hydraulic head loss is huge, and the streamline bends greatly, showing a strong horizontal distribution and converging towards the center. It can provide theoretical basis for the design of water and soil pressure in practical engineering.
