Abstract:ABSTRACT We study the impact of formal and informal institutions perceived and experienced by firms on their innovation using the 2012 World Bank Enterprise Survey data in China. We propose a framework to identify different innovator types of firms. Our analysis shows that (1) perceived constraints from the governmental system make firms more likely to be innovators than non-innovators; (2) perceived constraints from the legal system make firms more likely to be imitators than innovators; (3) lack of formal finance makes firms more likely to be non-innovators than innovators; (4) prevalence of bribery makes firms more likely to be non-innovators than innovators but less likely to be innovation pretenders than innovators. Our study enriches institutional theory and innovation research by establishing a framework that encompasses multiple dimensions of formal and informal institutions perceived and experienced by firms and the impacts of such perception and experience on firms’ propensity to become certain type of innovator.

Abstract:We investigate the impact of monetary incentives on the innovation performance of a unique sample of private Chinese SMEs. Building on an agency theoretic framework, we find evidence that firm-specific incentives matter, but their impact is contingent on the nature of the incentive, the employees at whom it is directed, and the measure of innovation employed. However, contrary to our hypothesis and the evidence in other countries, we find that pay-for-performance measures for managers positively impact patenting activity. This result is inconsistent with agency theory and reflects the Chinese institutional environment, notably state incentives for innovation.

Abstract:Although many studies employ social network theory to explain firm innovation, how individual-level factors lead to a firm's collective innovation capability remains under-researched. Building on studies that use the work boundary to define formal and informal social interactions, this research aims to illuminate how informal buyer-supplier employee interactions influence buyer firms' innovation capabilities through knowledge acquisition. Integrating the literatures on absorptive capacity and social interaction, the analysis of survey data from 273 Chinese manufacturing firms suggests that employees' informal interactions are positively associated with knowledge acquisition and enhance firms' innovation capabilities. Furthermore, the indirect effects of informal interactions on innovation capability are moderated by knowledge application.

Abstract:For a developing country undergoing economic transition like China, innovation plays an important role in optimizing the industrial structure and in improving economic growth. In general, due to the risk adverse behavior of the common investors, innovation activities often face a greater financial constraint compared to other routine activities of the firm. This study aims at examining the effect of financial constraints on firm innovative performance in the Chinese economic context. It further examines the moderating effects of state ownership and institutional environment on the relationship between financial constraints and innovative performance, using a firm level data set from 25 representative Chinese cities in 2012. The empirical results show that financial constraints do impede firms' innovative performances. Although state-owned equity has no direct effect on innovative activities, the negative effect of financial constraints on innovative performance is smaller for controlling state-owned companies than for non-state-owned counterparts. Moreover, sound institutional environment directly promotes firms' innovative activities; however, an inferior institutional environment alleviates the negative effect of financial constraints on firm innovative performance.

Abstract:Research Summary Drawing on entrepreneurial finance theory, we examine the trade‐offs among different sources of capital for entrepreneurial firms in emerging economies and their impact on innovation. In emerging economies, one of the unique aspects of firm financing is the presence of informal capital, as many formal sources of capital for new entrepreneurs have more constrained access than is the case in mature economies. We suspect that informal debt has an important effect on innovation, and this effect is contingent on the accessibility of formal debt and institutional development. The hypotheses are tested using survey data from 3,235 entrepreneurs in an emerging economy, China. Managerial Summary This study demonstrates an inverted U‐shaped relationship between the level of informal debt and entrepreneurial ventures’ innovation performance. The value of informal debt for promoting innovation was found to be weaker for firms having little or no access to often less expensive institutional finance, whereas a better‐developed institutional environment strengthens the effects of informal debt. Abstract:China features high degrees of income inequality, regional disparity and regional institutional diversity. With disparities in institutional development across regions, Chinese firms tend to have different levels of innovation as the costs, risks, efficiency and incentives of firms in innovation are affected by the regional institutional building. This article investigates the role of regional formal institutions in the innovation process in Chinese enterprises. It suggests that regional formal institutions (reflected by government support), financial institutions, educational institutions and taxation institutions promote innovation in Chinese firms, while they fail to discover such an impact from legal institutions. Also, regional formal institutions positively moderate Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) spillovers on process innovation.

Abstract:This study develops a novel conceptual framework to understand the differential impact of formal institutional regime shift in intellectual property rights on the innovation and patenting strategies of Chinese and Western firms operating in China. We argue that to the extent that Chinese firms have been deeply embedded in China’s informal institutions, they are less responsive to formal institutional changes than Western firms operating in China. Using the major China patent law reform of 2001 as an exogenous event, we find results consistent with our key arguments: With the strengthening of the previously weak (utility model) patent protection, Chinese firms are less likely to apply for such patents to safeguard their innovations than Western firms. However, this difference becomes less pronounced in regions with higher quality intellectual property rights and legal institutions that foster research and development and innovation, and when Western firms gain longer operational experience in China. This study advances our understanding of the intricate interaction between formal and informal institutions and specifically how “stickiness” may arise in their substitutive relationship because of the embeddedness of firms in informal institutional environments. It also provides important implications for policy and innovation strategies for policy makers and firms in emerging economies.

Abstract:In this paper, we study how land policy reform affects firm innovation and productivity in China. More specifically, we focus on the impact of the land regulations that controlled the quotas of land supply introduced in 2004. We find that land regulations promote firm innovation but inhibit firm productivity. The regulations constitute land input constraints for firms and make them more difficult in expanding production capacity to fully exploit economies of scale, meanwhile they push firms to invest in innovation to alleviate the adverse effects. It is also found that resource allocation efficiency is deteriorated and aggregate productivity is decreased in the post-land-regulation period. Moreover, the effects of land regulations on firm performance are stronger for non-state-owned enterprises and industries with a lower level of market competitiveness.

Abstract:In this paper we examine the effects of institutions on firms' management innovation. By proposing an externally embedded network perspective on firm performance, we demonstrate how the firms are influenced by the external institutional structure. In the framework of China's economic development, there are strong links between firm and local government, and these links will significantly influence the firms' management innovation ability. Thus, this paper focuses oil the firm-government network as a driving force to the firm management innovation ability and behavior. Furthermore, we study the network value of firms' internal and external networks in the effects of firm-government relationship using a simple game-theoretical model. In the end, some implications to the firms' management innovation strategies are proposed in the effect of firm-government relation.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to investigate the influence of the regional business environment on local firm innovation, considering various dimensions such as administrative, financial and legal environments. Design/methodology/approach Multiple regression analysis is employed to analyze archival data for firms listed on Chinese stock markets. Findings We find that the optimizations of the administrative and financial environments positively affect firm innovation, whereas the legal environment does not exert a similar impact. Our analysis also reveals that the business environment's optimization significantly influences innovation in firms that are small, non-state-owned and operating in high-tech industries. Furthermore, the business environment acts as a moderating variable in the relationship between firm innovation and firm value. Research limitations/implications This study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of institutional-level determinants of firm innovation, highlighting the nuances of the legal environment and the importance of context-specific analysis, especially in emerging markets like China. Practical implications Developing countries can significantly enhance firm innovation by improving the business environment, including the optimization of administrative and financial systems, reducing transaction costs and ensuring capital supply. Tailored legal frameworks and alternative institutional strategies may also be explored. Social implications This study explicitly emphasizes the governmental role in promoting firm innovation, shedding light on policy formulation and strategic alignment with local administrative policies. Originality/value To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to explore the relationship between the business environment and firm innovation using World Bank indicators in an emerging market context, providing novel insights into the unique dynamics of legal, financial and administrative sub-environments.

Abstract:This paper investigates the casual effects of credit corruption and financial constraints on firms' innovation activities, by using a unique data from the 2012 World Bank micro survey on Chinese firms. The results show that both the credit corruption and financial constraints significantly inhibit corporate innovation, and the financial constraints have more pronounced inhibitory effect on the innovation in firms with credit corruption. In addition, the credit corruption reinforces the inhibitory effect of financial constraints on the innovation in SMEs, private firms, capital-intensive firms, and firms with lower regional financial development.

Abstract:This paper investigates the effects of formal and informal financing on the innovation‐generating activities of small‐ and medium‐scale enterprises (SMEs) in China. While formal finance mainly includes loans from banks, informal finance includes loans obtained outside the banking system—loans based on personal relationships, loans from online loan providers, and other informal institutions. Our assessment of SMEs' innovation encompasses both the input and output of innovative activities as well as their involvement in the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiatives. Substantial empirical evidence suggests that formal and informal finance propel SMEs to innovate. These findings are robust to alternative measures of innovation and formal and informal finance. To address endogeneity concerns related to formal financing, we utilize two instrumental variables: firms' capacity to provide collateral and governmental support in securing bank loans. Additionally, we demonstrate that increased investment in research and development (R&D) serves as a pathway through which financing influences and enhances SMEs' innovation pursuits.

Abstract:The interaction between the organization and the institutional environment leads to organizational change or innovation. As the basic industry of China’s national economy, agricultural enterprises are transmitted from the institutional environment to the internals of the enterprise and are transformed into innovative behaviors, which ultimately form performance. Based on the research paradigm of “institution-behavior-performance”, it is of great significance to promote the association between formal and informal institutions, technical executive power and agricultural enterprise innovation performance. This article studied a sample of 164 listed agricultural enterprises from 2009 to 2017 and adopted the negative binomial regression to determine the relationship between institutional environment and innovation performance of these enterprises. The results of the studies show that the more perfect the formal system, the better the innovation performance of agricultural enterprises, while the informal system inhibits the innovation performance of enterprises. The technical executives play a positive intermediary role between formal institutions and innovation performance. However, it does not have a significant intermediary effect between informal institutions and innovation performance.

Abstract:Alternative institutions have played a significant role in the difficult and tenacious development process of private enterprises in recent decades. the paper applied 306 listed companies' data from January 2012 to December 2022 to investigate the relationship between institutional gap and enterprise behavior. Based on the identified, classified, and explained formal and alternative institutions, it proposed the concept of 'institutional gap' to infer the overlapped content of these two states. Concluding from the empirical results, Chinese private enterprises that introduced state-owned equity outperformance in management, financing and entering industries with high barriers. Moreover, the channel of state-owned equity introduction is compared with entrepreneurs' political participation. Although introducing state-owned equity is a crucial approach, the establishment and improvement of relevant legal systems is suggested, such as formal regulations and laws. The government should deepen the reform of the economic system to improve the business environment, so private enterprises consciously rely on market mechanisms to allocate resources efficiently and rationally, instead of actively seeking connections with the government to obtain benefits. The supervisory role of checks and balances shareholders should be exerted to the greatest extent to maintain and increase the value of state-owned assets, rather than allowing the controlling private shareholders to use them as resources acquired political capital.

Abstract:The increase in national-level innovation driven by corporate innovation is an inherent requirement for the current shift from high-speed growth to high-quality development in China's economy. In this study, we empirically analysed the influence of the institutional environment on corporate innovation and its underlying mechanism based on panel data of Chinese A-share listed companies from 2008 to 2016. The empirical results demonstrated that the institutional environment is conducive to the improvement of corporate innovation, and this result is validated by further robustness tests. The analysis of the companies' subsamples showed that the stimulation effect of the institutional environment on corporate innovation is more significant in Central and Western China than in Eastern China. The role of the institutional environment is also more evident in non-state-owned small and medium-sized enterprises. Further analysis demonstrated that investment in R&D plays a mediator role in the context where the institutional environment promotes corporate innovation, and the executive equity incentives in this process have a moderating effect.

Abstract:Firm innovation decision is subject to the influence of financial constraints, but the mechanism through which this impact occurs remains unclear. Using a nationwide representative survey data set of private firms in China in 2016, we first identified the strengthening effect of financial constraints on firm innovation decision, and further demonstrated the influence of corporate governance and risk diversification on such a relationship. The results show that firms tend to increase investment in innovation to improve operations when facing tighter financial constraints. Firms with suboptimal corporate governance and better conditions of risk diversification tend to adopt riskier innovation strategy to cope with tighter financial constraints.

Abstract:In the current society, institutional quality is essential to innovation activity, as formal and informal institutions have a positive impact on innovation. Formal institutional quality establishes the intellectual property rights culture that lowers the transaction costs, required to stimulate the innovation process. Strengthen informal institutions inseminate mutual trust and cooperation, necessary to share the previous knowledge, which is mandatory to invent new ideas. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effect of formal and informal institutions and their indicators on innovation activities. We construct the indices to measure the quality of formal and informal institutions using data on 73 countries for the period 1981–2014. The system GMM estimation technique is used to predict the performance of formal and informal institutions on innovation activities. Besides, this study estimates the effect of each indicator of formal as well as informal institutions on innovations after controlling for FDI, human capital, trade and government size. The hypotheses of positive effects of formal and informal institutional quality is accepted. The size of the effect of different indicators of institutions are varying. The results are robust across developed and developing countries. From a policy perspective, this study suggests that more focused monitoring of institutions is required to improve their quality that ultimately effects innovation activities.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a conceptual framework to scrutinize the non-linear correlation between intellectual property protection and enterprise innovation performance using panel data (2012–2020) from listed firms. The results exhibit an inverted U-shaped relationship of IPP on EIP. Our analysis underscores the important role of R&D intensity and disclosure quality in this relation, identifying them as potential transmission channels for IPP's effect on EIP. Furthermore, empirical evidence suggests that when companies are state-owned or located in innovative pilot cities, the inverse U-shaped relationship becomes more pronounced. Conversely, this relationship is significantly weakened in markets with lower levels of competition.
