Projections of Emission, Fate and Impact of HFO-1234yf in China

Abstract:Hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) are being used as substitutes for potent greenhouse gases hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). However, the use and environmental impacts of HFOs are of great concern due to the rapid degradation of HFOs to produce persistent and phytotoxic trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), one of the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). HFO-1234yf is the most widely used HFO and has the greatest formation potential of TFA. Here, we provided a comprehensive projection of HFO-1234yf emission in China during 2025-2060. GEOS-Chem was applied to simulate the atmospheric processes of HFO-1234yf and to characterize the distribution of the degradation product TFA. A water quality model was further adopted to assess the impact of HFO-1234yf emissions on surface terminal water body TFA concentrations in China. Under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, HFO-1234yf emission in China was estimated to increase from 1.5 to 79.0 kt in 2025-2060 with cumulative emission of 1.7 Mt. The annual deposition flux (dry plus wet) of TFA due to HFO-1234yf emission was expected to grow from 0.02 kg/km2/year in 2025 to 0.9 kg/km2/year in 2060, dominated by wet deposition. After continuous emission of HFO-1234yf from 2025 to 2060, the average concentration of TFA in terminal waters in China was projected to increase by 7.4 μg/L. The results of this study can provide scientific support for evaluating the environmental risks of HFOs uses and help in developing HFCs phase-out pathways for addressing climate change.

Abstract:The authors regret that the fifth sentence in section 2.2 should be “The NIMC standard gas with a dilution factor of 1000 times by ultra pure nitrogen were calibrated by the standard gas reported on SIO-2005 (used for halocarbon measurements in some background sites, http://agage.eas.gatech.edu/instruments-overview.htm). The inter-comparison experiments were carried out twice in Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, November 4, 2011 and November 15, 2011, respectively. In the second experiment, four parallel canisters of the diluted NIMC standard gas were calibrated, instead of only one canister in the former experiment. Therefore inter-comparison results reported here were derived from statistics in the second inter-comparison. For most species, discrepancies of only several percentages were found, 3.4e7.6% for HCFC-141b, 0.2e3.8% for HCFC-142b, 1.6 to 3.1% for HFC-134a, 0.6 to 3.5% for HFC-152a. But HCFC-22 concentration in NIMCwas found to be 118.0% (average value in four canisters) of that in standard gas reported on SIO-2005, so the HCFC-22 concentration in the NIMCwas revised by dividing a factor of 118.0%. In other words, HCFC-22 concentrations of ambient samples are reported on this revised NIMC scale in this study and in our researches afterward”. In Table 1, a statistical error occurred and theMean (SD) of 508 (208) for HCFC-22 should be 508 (283). Accordingly, all values of 508 (208) in text should be changed to 508 (283), including: (1) the fourth sentence in the first paragraph of 3.3 sector should be “The average mixing ratios of HCFC-22, HCFC-141b and HCFC-142bwere 508 (283) pptv, 65 (60) pptv and 87 (57) pptv, respectively, significantly higher than the background values (P < 0.01)”; (2) the second sentence in 4 chapter should be “However, levels of HCFCs and HFCs surpassed the background values to a large extent, especially HCFC-22 (508 (283) pptv for the 46 cities compared to 218.5 pptv for background)”; (3) the “508(208)” for HCFC-22 in Table 2 should be “508 (283)”. Establishment and verification of HFC-134a-gridded emission inventory in China

Abstract:Hydrofluorocarbon-134a (HFC-134a) has been experiencing an annual increase in global emissions and atmospheric concentration in recent years, as a major substitute for ozone-depleting substances (ODSs). It has attracted considerable global attention owing to its double environmental effects, including high global warming potential and degradation to form trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). There are discrepancies in the results of existing top-down and bottom-up studies, and existing studies have only estimated the total HFC-134a emissions at national or regional scales. The lack of methods for building and verifying high-spatial-resolution emissions inventories makes it difficult to analyze the spatial distribution of emissions and regional contributions, as well as to identify emission hotspot grids. This study utilized emission factors and an atmospheric dispersion model to establish a methodology for calculating and validating a gridded emission inventory of HFC-134a, and evaluated its dual environmental impacts. This study focused on China and calculated a gridded emission inventory of HFC-134a for the period from 1995 to 2020. The results showed that the banks and emissions of HFC-134a increased from 0.9 kt and 0.1 kt yr-1 in 1995 to 301 kt (273-332 kt) and 48 kt yr-1 (39-56 kt yr-1) in 2020, respectively. Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Shandong provinces in eastern China had the largest cumulative emissions, with a total cumulative emission amount of 98 kt, accounting for 28% of the national emissions, and were also the provinces where the hotspot grids were mainly distributed. The high spatial resolution emission inventories can provide important input data for atmospheric models to simulate transport and transformation processes and assess environmental impacts, thus improving the accuracy of modelling and prediction. In addition, prediction results showed that if HFC-134a was phased out solely in accordance with the emission reduction requirements of the Kigali Amendment, there would still be HFC-134a banks and emissions in China by the year 2060. If emissions were reduced according to the carbon-neutral emission reduction path proposed in this study to meet a high consumption demand for HFC-134a, it was feasible to achieve nearly zero emissions in 2060. Nevertheless, if HFO-1234yf and R-513A were selected as substitutes for HFC-134a, it could result in the production of more TFA through atmospheric degradation, which could have an adverse impact on the aquatic ecosystem and plants. Therefore, it is necessary to actively explore more environmentally friendly alternatives in the future.
Constraining Trifluoromethane (HFC‐23) Emission in Eastern China Based on Two‐Year Online Measurements

Abstract:Abstract Trifluoromethane (CHF 3 , HFC‐23) is one of the most potent greenhouse gases (GHGs), and eastern China has been recognized as a major source region, yet highly inconsistent emission estimates warrant more extensive studies. In this study, we conducted 2‐year online measurements of halocarbons during 2021–2023 at an urban site in the Pearl River Delta region. The observed average HFC‐23 mixing ratios of 43.6 ± 7.8 ppt were ∼20% enhanced compared to observations at the Mace Head global baseline station. Unlike other halocarbons with significant local emissions, HFC‐23 mixing ratios showed distinct seasonal variations with peak values in winter and bottom values in summer. Similar seasonal patterns and highly significant correlation were observed between HFC‐23 and perfluorocyclobutane (c‐C 4 F 8 , PFC‐318), a co‐product from manufacturing PTFE using chlorodifluoromethane (CHClF 2 , HCFC‐22) as feedstock. The weighted potential source contribution function analysis also demonstrated eastern China was the major source area for both HFC‐23 and PFC‐318. Tracer‐based estimation revealed HFC‐23 emissions of 6.7 ± 3.1 Gg yr −1 (equivalent to 98 Tg‐CO 2 yr −1 or 0.7% China's annual GHG emissions in 2021) in eastern China. Our results highlight the importance of HFC‐23 emission control in eastern China for China's GHG and F‐gases emission reductions, and suggest that greater attention should be given to HFC‐23 emissions from PTFE production, which is emerging as a more substantial source than previously anticipated.

Abstract:Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are strong greenhouse gases and regulated by the Montreal Protocol as substitutes of ozone depletion substances. Currently, Chinese HFC emissions keep increasing, and the inventory is only on a national or city level. A high-resolution gridded HFC emission inventory is needed to develop HFC reduction policy and phase-down schedule. We developed a method by integrating point sources with longitude and latitude information and area sources using the proxy factor to explore the distribution of R-410A [a mixture of HFC-32 (CH2F2) and HFC-125 (C2HF5)] emissions from the room air-conditioning sector on a 10 × 10 km2 grid scale. Variety of regression models (including the principal component analysis, multiple linear regressions, stepwise regressions, and linear regression), analysis scale (national level and provincial level), and data dimensions (the proxy factor and unit-area value) were tested. The gross domestic product was found as the optimal proxy factor and used to spatialize R-410A emissions at a high-resolution scale. Compared to the national-level analysis, model evaluation parameters were largely improved for the provincial-level regression analysis, including root-mean-square error (from 20.96 to 11.35), normalized mean bias (from 0.16 to − 0.01), normalized mean error (from 0.45 to 0.20), mean absolute error (from 11.27 to 4.97), correlation coefficient (from 0.91 to 0.97), and relative error (from 39

Abstract:Under the control of the Montreal Protocol and its amendments, hydrofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are used as temporary substitutes for ozone-depleting substances, such as chlorofluorocarbons, and are regulated for consumption and production. China plans to phase out HCFCs by 2030, and HCFC-22 (CHClF2) is currently the most abundant HCFC in the atmosphere. This study measures the vertical profiles and total columns of atmospheric HCFC-22 from January 2017 to December 2022, based on the mid-infrared solar spectra recorded by the ground-based high-resolution Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer at the Hefei remote sensing station. The HCFC-22 total columns over Hefei increased from 2017–2018 and gradually decreased in 2018–2022, with an annual variation rate of 5.98% and −1.02% ± 0.02%, respectively. Compared with the ACE-FTS satellite independent dataset, the FTIR data indicate good consistency with the ACE-FTS data at a 5–25 km altitude, with an average relative difference of −4.38 ± 0.83% between the vertical profiles. HCFC-22 emissions in the Yangtze River Delta from 2017 to 2022 are estimated, derived from measured total columns combined with the Lagrangian transport model and the Bayesian inversion technique. In the Yangtze River Delta, HCFC-22 emissions were high in 2017, with a value of 33.3 ± 16.8 kt, and decreased from 2018 to 2022, with a minimum of 27.3 ± 13.6 kt in 2022 during the observations.

Abstract:Trifluoromethane (CHF3, HFC-23) is one of the hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) regulated under the Kyoto Protocol with a global warming potential (GVVP) of 14 800 (100-year). China's past, present, and future HFC-23 emissions are of considerable interest to researchers and policymakers involved in climate change. In this study, we compiled a comprehensive historical inventory (1980-2012) and a projection (2013-2050) of HFC-23 production, abatements, and emissions in China. Results show that HFC-23 production in China increased from 0.08 +/- 0.05 Gg/yr in 1980 to 15.4 +/- 2.1 Gg/yr (228 +/- 31 Tg/yr CO2-eq) in 2012, while actual HFC-23 emissions reached a peak of 10.5 +/- 1.8 Gg/yr (155 +/- 27 Tg/y CO2-eq) in 2006, and decreased to a minimum of 7.3 +/- 1.3 Gg/yr (108 +/- 19 Tg/yr CO2-eq) in 2008 and 2009. Under the examined business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, the cumulative emissions of HFC-23 in China over the period 2013-2050 are projected to be 609 Gg (9015 Tg CO2-eq which approximates China's 2012 CO2 emissions). Currently, China's annual HFC-23 emissions are much higher than those from the developed countries, while it is estimated that by year 2027, China's historic contribution to the global atmospheric burden of HFC-23 will have surpassed that of the developed nations under the BAU scenario.

Abstract:Many hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) that are widely used as substitutes for ozone depleting substances (now regulated under the Montreal Protocol) are very potent greenhouse gases (GHGs). China's past and future HFC emissions are of great interest because China has emerged as a major producer and consumer of HFCs. Here, we present for the first time a comprehensive inventory estimate of China's HFC emissions during 2005-2013. Results show a rapid increase in HFC production, consumption, and emissions in China during the period and that the emissions of HFC with a relatively high global warming potential (GWP) grew faster than those with a relatively low GWP. The proportions of China's historical HFC CO2-equivalent emissions to China's CO2 emissions or global HFC CO2-equivalent emissions increased rapidly during 2005-2013. Using the "business -as -usual" (BAU) scenario, in which HFCs are used to replace a significant fraction of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) in China (to date, there are no regulations on HFC uses in China), emissions of HFCs are projected to be significant components of China's and global future GHG emissions. However, potentials do exist for minimizing China's HFC emissions (for example, if regulations on HFC uses are established in China). Our findings on China's historical and projected HFC emission trajectories could also apply to other developing countries, with important implications for mitigating global GHG emissions.

Abstract:HFO-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) is being used as refrigerant to replace HFC-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane), a potent greenhouse gas, in mobile air conditioners. However, the environmental impacts of HFO-1234yf, which is quickly and almost completely transformed to the persistent and phytotoxic trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), is of great concern. Here, we used the nested-grid chemical transport model, GEOS-Chem, to assess the fate and environmental impacts of HFO-1234yf emissions from mobile air conditioners in East Asia. With total emissions of 30.3 Gg yr −1 , the annual mean concentrations of HFO-1234yf in China, Japan, and South Korea were 4.00, 3.23, and 5.54 pptv (parts per trillion volume), respectively, and the annual deposition fluxes (dry plus wet) of TFA in these regions were 0.35, 0.48, and 0.53 kg km −2 yr −1 , dominated by wet deposition. About 14 %, 13 % and 11 % of HFO-1234yf emissions were deposited as TFA in China, Japan and South Korea, respectively, i.e. a large portion of TFA was deposited in areas outside of the emission boundary regions. The TFA characteristics in Japan and South Korea was significantly influenced by emission from China, which contributions ranged from 43 % to 94 % for the TFA concentrations and 44 % to 98 % for the TFA depositions across the four seasons. This suggests that the influence of neighboring emission sources cannot be ignored when assessing the impact of HFO-1234yf emissions in individual countries.

Abstract:Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have been widely used in China to replace ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) that must be phased out under the Montreal Protocol. Few studies have reported on HFC emissions in China, especially for recent years and using top-down approaches based on atmospheric measurements. Here we used flask and in situ measurements for nine HFCs from seven sites across China over the period of 2011-2017, and FLEXPART-model-based Bayesian inverse modeling, to estimate HFC emission magnitudes and changes in China. We found that emissions of HFC-32 (CH2F2), HFC-125 (CHF2CF3), HFC-134a (CH2FCF3), HFC-227ea (CF3CHFCF3), and HFC-245fa (CHF2CH2CF3) have been increasing fast over this period while emissions of HFC-143a (CH3CF3), HFC-152a (CH3CHF2), HFC-236fa (CF3CH2CF3), and HFC-365mfc (CH3CF2CH2CF3) have been relatively stable. Total CO2-equivalent emissions of the nine HFCs increased from similar to 60 Tg year(-1) in 2011 to similar to 100 Tg year(-1) in 2017. Among these nine HFCs, HFC-134a (39%) and HFC-125 (35%) make the largest contributors to the national total HFC-CO2 -equivalent emissions. Cumulative contributions from China's HFC emissions to the global total HFC mole fractions and their related radiative forcing increased from 1.0% in 2005 to 10.7% in 2017. Upon comparison of global emissions with the sum of emissions from China and developed countries, an increasing difference is observed over recent years, which points to substantial additional HFC emissions from other developing countries under the Kyoto Protocol.

Establishment of HCFC-22 National-Provincial-Gridded Emission Inventories in China and the Analysis of Emission Reduction Potential

Abstract:Due to chlorodifluoromethane's (CHClF2, HCFC-22) dual environmental impact on climate change and ozone depletion, its emissions have attracted international attention. In this study, a set of national-provincial-gridded (1 degrees x 1 degrees) emission estimation methods were built and applied to obtain the national, provincial, and gridded emission inventories in China in 1990-2019. In addition, the HCFC-22 emission reduction potential of different emission scenarios was analyzed. The results show that China's HCFC-22 emissions reached a peak in 2017 and that the cumulative emissions in 1990-2019 were 1576.8 (1348.2-1819.0) kt (equivalent to 86.7 kt CFC-11 and 2854.1 Mt CO2). China's HCFC-22 emissions in the east were higher than those in the west, and the emissions in the south were higher than those in the north. Under the control of the Montreal Protocol, China will reduce the cumulative emissions of 17 840.8 kt (avoiding 0.08 degrees of global warming by 2056) in 2020-2056. If the disposal refrigerant can be effectively recycled in the future, the HCFC-22 emission reduction in this period will reach 18 020.3 kt. The established emission estimation methods and obtained results can provide scientific and technological support for ozone layer protection and for addressing climate change.

Abstract:According to the Montreal Protocol, China is required to phase-out hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) by 2030. Compound 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane (CH3CCl2F, HCFC-141b) has an ozone depleting potential (ODP, 0.11) and global warming potential (GWP, 782), and is widely used in the polyurethane foam and solvent sectors in China. This study compiles a comprehensive emission inventory of HCFC-141b during 2000-2013 and makes a projection to 2050. Our results showed that HCFC-141b emissions in China increased from 0.8 Gg/yr (0.6 CO2-eq Tg/yr) in 2000 to 15.8 Gg/yr (12.4 CO2-eq Tg/yr) in 2013 with an accelerated growth rate. The provincial emission distribution showed that Shandong, Jiangsu, and Guangdong are key emission areas in China. A large amount of stock was retained in installed equipment, which may have an impact in the future. For future phasing-out, it was estimated that under the Montreal Planned Phase-out scenario (MPP), the accumulative reduction of HCFC-141b emissions during 2014-2050 would be 3071.0 Gg (2401.5 CO2-eq Tg) compared to that under the Business-as-usual (BAU) scenario. The Changing Ambient Mixing Ratios of Long-Lived Halocarbons under Montreal Protocol in China

Abstract:The varying trend of long-lived halocarbons demands close attention of their atmospheric climate impact. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were phased out in 2008 under the Montreal Protocol in China, and nowadays, hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are the main substitutes. Since 2000, studies on CFCs, HCFCs, and HFCs, with respect to their ambient mixing ratios and emissions, were intensively performed over China. CFCs declined evidently, while HCFCs and HFCs greatly increased in China due to the successful phase-out of CFCs under the Montreal Protocol. In the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, the most developed region in China, the increasing and decreasing rates of CFC-11, CFC-12, HCFC-22, and HCFC-141b since 2000 were -3.6 +/- 0.5 pptv/yr, -11.7 +/- 3.3 pptv/yr, 17.9 +/- 4.9 pptv/yr and 7.2 +/- 2.0 pptv/yr, respectively. The increase of HCFC-141b in northern China was 1.1 +/- 0.6 pptv/yr, much lower than the PRD region. The overall increase of HFC-134a in China was 5.6 +/- 0.2 pptv/yr. These rates were significantly higher than those for their corresponding background averages in the northern hemisphere. Other HFCs excluding HFC-134a were of great global warming potentials, but their ambient mixing ratios were reportedly limited in China. The emission ratios between HCFC-22 and CFC-12, and HFC-134a and HCFC-22 were used as the measurements, showing virtual replacement occurring in China. Abstract:Currently used foam agent HCFC-141b was undergoing phased out worldwide with the implementation of the Montreal Protocol. HFO-1234ze was proposed as replacement in polyurethane (PU) foam industry with shorter atmospheric lifetime. This paper calculated historical and future emissions of HCFC-141b and HFO-1234ze till 2050, used GEOS-Chem under two HFO-1234ze emission scenarios to track its atmospheric process and distribution, and to assess its potential environmental effects. Results showed that annual HCFC-141b emissions for 2015, 2019 and 2050 were 12.6 Gg/yr, 21.0 Gg/yr and 7.6 Gg/yr, respectively and emissions of HFO-1234ze would reach 124.4 Gg/yr by 2050. Under Scenario I with HFO-1234ze emissions of 12.6 Gg/yr as input, annual mixing ratios of HFO-1234ze and its products CF3CHO and HCOF were 10.47, 2.68 and 1.74 pptv for China, and were 0.55, 0.18 and 0.1 pptv globally, respectively, suggesting the regional aggregation of these substances in emission areas. HCOF were removed from atmosphere by depositions, with total deposition rates of 22.06 g km(-1) y(-1) in CH, and 1.15 g km(-1) y(-1) in globe. Under Scenario II with HFO-1234ze emissions of 124.4 Gg/yr as input, annual mixing ratios of HFO-1234ze, CF3CHO and HCOF, along with HCOF total deposition rates were 102.98 26.36 and 17.17 pptv and 217 g km(-1) y(-1) in China, respectively, increased linearly to HFO-1234ze emissions change. The mixing ratios of HFO-1234ze and HCOF were too small to exert significant effects on current atmosphere burden and circulation, while CF3CHO might potentially involve in aminolysis reaction under future emissions of HFO-1234ze. Estimated Emissions of Chlorofluorocarbons, Hydrochlorofluorocarbons, and Hydrofluorocarbons Based on an Interspecies Correlation Method in the Pearl River Delta Region, China

Abstract:Although many studies have been conducted in recent years on the emissions of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) at the large regional (such as East Asia) and national scales, relatively few studies have been conducted for cities or metropolitan areas. In this study, 192 air samples were collected in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of China in November 2010. The atmospheric mixing ratios of six halocarbons were analyzed, including trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11, CCl3F), dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC-12, CCl2F2), monochlorodifluoromethane (HCFC-22, CHClF2), 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane (HCFC-141b, CH3CCl2F), 1-dichloro-1,1-fluoroethane (HCFC-142b, CH3CClF2), and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a, CH2FCF3), and their emissions were estimated based on an interspecies correlation method using HCFC-22 as the reference species. The results showed no significant change in the regional concentration and emission of CFC in the past 10years, suggesting that the continuous regional emission of CFC has had no significant effect on the CFC regional concentration in the PRD region. Concentrations and emissions of HCFCs and HFCs are significantly higher compared to previous research in the PRD region (P<0.05). The largest emission was for HCFC-22, most likely due to its substitution for CFC-12 in the industrial and commercial refrigeration subsector, and the rapid development of the room air-conditioner and extruded polystyrene subsectors. The PRD's ODP-weighted emissions of the target HCFCs provided 9% (7–12%) of the national emissions for the corresponding species. The PRD's GWP-weighted emissions of the target HCFCs and HFC-134a account for 10% (7–12%) and 8% (7–9%), respectively, of the national emissions for the corresponding species, and thus are important contributions to China's total emissions.
