Abstract:In a subject of ‘optical angular momentum (OAM) and optical vortex’, a twisted light (also referred to as a ‘spiralling optical field’) possesses a helical wavefront. Recently, a new advance in the twisted light is Rego et al's discovery of self-torque effect that can cause an intrinsic angular acceleration (DOI:10.1126/science.aaw9486). Such a self-torque effect gives rise to a time-varying optical orbital angular momentum. Then we believe that the time-dependent OAM of this vortex laser beam can lead to non-trivial evolution of the OAM state vector. It is expected that the information on the self-torque of a twisted optical field might be reflected in an extra phase shift and, based on this, we study the possible precession and nutation evolution of a quantized optical orbital angular momentum in such a twisted light. The relevant effects such as non-cyclic non-adiabatic ‘geometric’ phase and dynamical phase due to the angular momentum precession and nutation in the vortex beam are also included. An effective Hamiltonian characterizing the optical vortex precession and nutation is constructed and the time-dependent wave equation is solved. The result obtained in this paper could be utilized in treating the polarization evolution and possible mechanical (force) effect of twisted optical fields that can exhibit the self-torque phenomenon.

Abstract:Longitudinal orbital angular momentum (OAM) is a fundamental property of light that has been the subject of extensive research and applied to diverse important applications, such as optical tweezers, super-resolution imaging, and optical information processing. Recently, photons have been observed to possess transverse OAM, where the OAM vector is orthogonal to the direction of light propagation. As the carrier for this unique OAM, the spatiotemporal (ST) optical vortex has attracted considerable interest. Here, we provide a general overview of recent experimental and theoretical advances on such vortices, presenting their synthesis and measurement strategies, highlighting their nontrivial properties in linear propagation and interaction with nonlinear matter, and discussing the possible future trends and challenges.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal Optical Vortices (STOVs) are structured electromagnetic fields propagating in free space with phase singularities in the space-time domain. Depending on the tilt of the helical phase front, STOVs can carry both longitudinal and transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM). Although STOVs have gained significant interest in the recent years, the current understanding is limited to the semi-classical picture. Here, we develop a quantum theory for STOVs with an arbitrary tilt, extending beyond the paraxial limit. We demonstrate that quantum STOV states, such as Fock and coherent twisted photon pulses, display non-vanishing longitudinal OAM fluctuations that are absent in conventional monochromatic twisted pulses. We show that these quantum fluctuations exhibit a unique texture, i.e. a spatial distribution which can be used to experimentally isolate these quantum effects. Our findings represent a step towards the exploitation of quantum effects of structured light for various applications such as OAM-based encoding protocols and platforms to explore novel light-matter interaction in 2D material systems.

Abstract:Light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) holds unique properties and boosts myriad applications in diverse fields. However, the generation of an ultrafast wave packet carrying numerous vortices with various transverse OAM modes, i.e., vortex string, remains challenging, and the corresponding detection method is lacking. Here, we demonstrate that a vortex string with 28 spatiotemporal optical vortices (STOVs) with customizable topological charge (TC) arrangements can be generated in one wave packet. The diffraction rules of STOV strings are revealed theoretically and experimentally. Following these rules, the TC values and positions of all STOVs in a vortex string can be simultaneously recognized from the diffraction pattern. Such STOV strings facilitate STOV-based optical communication. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, the transmission of an image is realized with 16-STOV strings. This work provides guidance for revealing the underlying properties of the transverse OAM light and opens up opportunities for applications of the structured light in optical communication, quantum information processing, etc.

Abstract:Optical spatiotemporal vortices with transverse photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) have recently become a focal point of research. In this work we theoretically and experimentally investigate optical spatiotemporal vortices with radial and azimuthal quantum numbers, known as spatiotemporal Laguerre-Gaussian (STLG) wavepackets. These 3D wavepackets exhibit phase singularities and cylinder-shaped edge dislocations, resulting in a multi-ring topology in its spatiotemporal profile. Unlike conventional ST optical vortices, STLG wavepackets with non-zero p and l values carry a composite transverse OAM consisting of two directionally opposite components. We further demonstrate mode conversion between an STLG wavepacket and an ST Hermite-Gaussian wavepacket through the application of strong spatiotemporal astigmatism. The converted STHG wavepacket is de-coupled in intensity in space-time domain that can be utilized to implement the efficient and accurate recognition of ultrafast STLG wavepackets carried various p and l. This study may offer new insights into high-dimensional quantum information, photonic topology, and nonlinear optics, while promising potential applications in other wave phenomena such as acoustics and electron waves.

Abstract:Abstract As a new degree of freedom for optical manipulation, recently, spatiotemporal optical vortices (STOVs) carrying transverse orbital angular momentums have been experimentally demonstrated with pulse shapers. Here, a spatiotemporal differentiator is proposed to generate STOVs with transverse orbital angular momentum. In order to create phase singularity in the spatiotemporal domain, the spatiotemporal differentiator is designed by breaking spatial mirror symmetry. In contrast to pulse shapers, the device proposed here is a simple one‐dimensional periodic nanostructure and thus it is much more compact. For a normal incident pulse, the differentiator generates a transmitted STOV pulse with transverse orbital angular momentum. Furthermore, the interference of the generated STOVs can be used to detect the sharp changes of pulse envelopes, in both spatial and temporal dimensions.

Endeavors have been made to manipulate the OAM in order to generate on-demand structured light and to explore novel properties of light. However, the generation of an ultrafast wave packet carrying numerous vortices with various OAM modes, that is vortex string, has been rarely explored and remains a significant challenge. Moreover, methods that enable parallel detection of all vortices in a vortex string are lacking. Here, we demonstrate that a vortex string with 28 spatiotemporal optical vortices (STOVs) can be successfully generated in an ultrafast wave packet. All STOVs in the string can be randomly or orderly arranged. The diffraction rules of STOV strings are also revealed theoretically and experimentally. Following these rules, the topological charges and positions of all STOVs in a vortex string can be easily recognized. The strategy for parallel generation and detection of STOV strings will open up exciting perspectives in STOV-based optical communications and also promote promising applications of the structured light in light-matter interaction, quantum information processing, etc.

Abstract:Recently, the discovery of optical spatiotemporal (ST) vortex beams with transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM) has attracted increasing attention and is expected to extend the research scope and open new opportunities for practical applications of OAM states. The ST vortex beams are also applicable to other physical fields that involve wave phenomena, and here we develop the ST vortex concept in the field of acoustics and report the generation of Bessel-type ST acoustic vortex beams. The ST vortex beams are fully characterized using the scalar approach for the pressure field and the vector approach for the velocity field. We further investigate the transverse spreading effect and construct ST vortex beams with an ellipse-shaped spectrum to reduce the spreading effect. We also experimentally demonstrated the orthogonality relations between ST vortex beams with different charges. Our study successfully demonstrates the versatility of the acoustic system for exploring and discovering spatiotemporally structured waves, inspiring further investigation of exotic wave physics. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.131.014001 © 2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:Today, it is well known that light possesses a linear momentum that is along the propagation direction. Besides, scientists also discovered that light can possess an angular momentum, a spin angular momentum (SAM) associated with circular polarization and an orbital angular momentum (OAM) owing to the azimuthally dependent phase. Even though such angular momenta are longitudinal in general, an SAM transverse to the propagation direction has opened up a variety of key applications1. In contrast, investigations of the transverse OAM are rare due to its complex nature. Here, we demonstrate a three-dimensional wave packet that is a spatiotemporal (ST) optical vortex with a controllable purely transverse OAM. Contrary to the transverse SAM, the magnitude of the transverse OAM carried by the ST vortex is scalable to a larger value by simple adjustments. Since the ST vortex carries a controllable OAM uniquely in the transverse dimension, it has strong potential for novel applications that may not be possible otherwise. The scheme reported here can be readily adapted for other spectral regimes and different wave fields, opening opportunities for the study and applications of ST vortices in a wide range of areas.

Abstract:Abstract Providing additional degrees of freedom to manipulate light, spatiotemporal optical vortex (STOV) beams carrying transverse orbital angular momentum are of fundamental importance for spatiotemporal control of light-matter interactions. Unfortunately, existing methods to generate STOV are plagued by various limitations such as inefficiency, bulkiness, and complexity. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a microscale singlet platform composed of a slanted nanograting to generate STOV. Leveraging the intrinsic topological singularity induced by C 2 symmetry and z -mirror symmetry breaking of the slanted nanograting, STOV is generated through the Fourier transform of the spiral phase in the momentum-frequency space to the spatiotemporal domain. In experiments, we observe the space-time evolution of STOV carried by femtosecond pulses using a time-resolved interferometry technique and achieve a generation efficiency exceeding 40%. Our work sheds light on a compact and versatile platform for light pulse shaping, and paves the way towards a fully integrated system for spatiotemporal light manipulation.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal optical vortices (STOVs) are short pulses that present a vortex whose axis is perpendicular to the main propagation direction. We present analytic expressions for these pulses that satisfy exactly Maxwell's equation, by applying appropriate differential operators to complex focus pulses with Poisson-like frequency spectrum. We also provide a simple ray picture for understanding the deformation of these pulses under propagation. Finally, we use these solutions to propose a type of pulse with sagittal skyrmionic polarization distribution covering all states of transverse polarization.

Abstract:Optical vortices with longitudinal orbital angular momentum (OAM) as a powerful tool for particle control, imaging and communication have been greatly developed. We introduce a novel property of broadband terahertz (THz) pulse, represented by frequency-dependent OAM orientation in spatiotemporal domain with transverse and longitudinal OAM projection. We illustrate a frequency-dependent broadband THz spatiotemporal optical vortex (STOV) in plasma-based THz emission driven by cylindrical symmetry broken two-color vortex field. We detect the evolution of OAM by time-delayed 2D electro-optic sampling combined with Fourier transform. This THz optical vortices tunability in spatiotemporal domain expands a new way for studying STOV and plasma-based THz radiation.

Spatio-temporal optical vortices: principles of description and basic properties

Abstract:These notes appeared as a summary during the initial acquaintance with the structure and properties of spatio-temporal optical vortices (STOV), as these are presented in the current literature. The general approach to the STOV description and characterization is based on the model of scalar paraxial Gaussian wave packet. On this ground, the STOV structures of arbitrary orders are considered as superpositions of spatio-temporal Hermite-Gaussian modes. This representation enables the direct and physically meaningful characterization of the STOV amplitude and phase distributions, their evolution upon free propagation and in optical systems, internal energy flows and the orbital angular momentum. The topologically determined asymmetry and the difference between the "energy center" and "probability center" [Phys. Rev. A 107, L031501 (2023)] is discussed and qualitatively interpreted. Methods for the STOV generation and diagnostics are outlined, and the main properties of non-Gaussian (Bessel-type) STOVs are briefly described. The notes may be useful as initial introduction to the STOV-associated ideas and their extraordinary properties.

Abstract:We investigate the tailoring effect of the point vortices on the foci of the circular Airy vortex beam (CAVB). Two optical vortices (OVs) with same or opposite topological charges (TCs) are symmetrically loaded on the beam. It is found that the loading distance between these two OVs (denoted as d(v)) can significantly tailor the auto-focusing behaviour of the beam. For two OVs with same TCs, as d(v )increases from 0 to infinite, the intensity pattern at the focal plane changes from a ring to a bright spot. For opposite OVs, when d(v) is near 0 or very large, there is a bright foci. But within a certain range, two foci are generated at the focal plane. Good agreements have been achieved between simulations and experiments. We qualitatively explain the tailoring phenomena from the perspective of the inward energy flow of the main ring of CAVB and the interaction between two OVs. The tailoring effect of d(v) of the two OVs on the focal pattern may have potential applications in micromanipulation, communication and other fields.
Generation of robust spatiotemporal optical vortices with transverse orbital angular momentum beyond 10^2

Abstract:Recently, photons have been observed to possess transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM); however, it is unclear as whether they can hold a transverse OAM higher than 1. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that high-order spatiotemporal Bessel optical vortices (STBOVs) can stably carry transverse OAM even beyond 10^2. Through the inverse design of the spiral phase, an STBOV of any order can be controllably generated using a 4f pulse shaper. In contrast to conventional longitudinal OAM, the vector direction of the transverse OAM can be distinguished by the unique time-symmetrical evolution of STBOVs. More interestingly, the stability of STBOVs improves with their increasing orders owing to enhanced space-time coupling, making these beams particularly suitable for the generation of ultra-high transverse OAM. Our work paves the way for further research and application of this unique OAM of photons.

Abstract:Optical vortices have attracted much attention recently due to their novel properties and widening applications. And lots of optical vortices can be obtained though most of them turn on spiral pattern on increasing azimuthal angle. In this paper, one kind of non-spiral optical vortex was proposed whose front phase distribution is tangent function of azimuthal angle. And this kind of optical vortices were also observed experimentally by computer-generated hologram method. It was found that when topological charge is smaller than unit one, vortex beam shape changes considerably on increasing topological charge, from hollow pattern to curve shape. When topological charge is bigger than unit and is times of 0.5, vortex beam turns symmetrical polygonal pattern though there is crack between adjacent sides, and the side number is twice of topological charge.

Abstract:Perfect optical vortex (POV) is a type of vortex beam with an infinite thin ring and a fixed radius independent of its topological charge. Here we propose the concept of generalized perfect optical vortex along arbitrary curves beyond the regular shapes of circle and ellipse. Generalized perfect optical vortices also share the similar properties as POVs, such as defined only along infinite thin curves and owning topological charges independent of scales. Notably, they naturally degenerate to the POVs and elliptic POVs along circles and ellipses, respectively. We also experimentally generated the generalized perfect optical vortices through a digital micromirror device (DMD) and measured the phase distributions by interferometry, exhibiting good agreements with the simulations. Moreover, we derive a proper modified formula to yield the generalized perfect optical vortices with uniform intensity distribution along predesigned curves. The generalized perfect optical vortices might find the potential applications in optical tweezers and communication.

Abstract:A simple method for designing spatiotemporal coherency vortices (STCVs) and spatiotemporal dislocation curves (STDCs) is introduced by means of coherent-mode representation and Fourier transforms. A partially coherent pulsed beam is represented by an incoherent superposition of a Gaussian and a Hermite-Gaussian pulsed beam with different waist positions. It well demonstrates that there exist STCVs and STDCs in the space-time plane. The detailed numerical calculations are performed to address the dependence of waist distance of two modes, reference position, beam order, distribution of original spectrum, topological charge and mode weights ratio on the STCVs and STDCs. The physical interpretation behind numerical results is shown. A possible scheme for experimental synthesis of the STCVs is proposed. The obtained results may have potential applications in the fields of light-matter interaction, spatiotemporal spin-orbit angular momentum coupling and STCV-based optical trapping and optical manipulation.
Engineering Arbitrarily Oriented Spatiotemporal Optical Vortices Using Transmission Nodal Lines

Abstract:It has been recently demonstrated that optical pulses can hold transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM). Generation of such vortices typically requires bulky optics, and only OAMs that are fully longitudinal or transverse have been demonstrated until now. Here we investigate a general family of spatiotemporal vortices with arbitrarily oriented OAM and introduce a compact device for its generation. The device operates by having a transmission nodal line, which is a topological defect in the wavevector-frequency spectra of the transmission coefficient. We show that the position and dispersion of the transmission nodal line can be controlled by structural symmetry of the device. By transmitting a Gaussian pulse through the device, we can generate spatiotemporal vortices with its nodal line and OAM oriented along any arbitrary direction. This ability to generate a full family of spatiotemporal vortex pulses may find application in pulse shaping or sensing in the spatiotemporal domain. Our work also provides a novel approach of engineering topological response functions in photonic crystal slabs.
