Abstract:Research progress of carbon dioxide applied for methane exploitation from hydrates is summarized, with a focus on advances in molecular dynamics simulations and their application in understanding the mechanism of carbon dioxide replacement for hydrate exploitation. The potential of carbon dioxide in enhancing energy recovery efficiency and promoting carbon capture and storage is emphasized. An overview is provided of the advancements made in utilizing carbon dioxide for methane hydrate exploitation, highlighting its significance. Subsequently, the theoretical foundations and techniques of molecular dynamics simulations are delved into, encompassing key elements such as statistical ensembles, molecular force fields, and numerical solution methods. Through simulations, various characterization parameters including mean square displacement, radial distribution functions, coordination numbers, angular order parameters, and hydrogen bonds are computed and analyzed, which are crucial for understanding the dynamic changes in hydrate structures and the replacement process. Thorough research and analysis have been conducted on the two possible and widely debated mechanisms involved in the replacement of methane hydrates by carbon dioxide, with a particular emphasis on guest molecular replacement and hydrate reconfiguration. These processes encompass the intricate interactions between carbon dioxide molecules and the cage-like structure of hydrates, as well as the rearrangement and stabilization of hydrate structures. Several key issues surrounding the application of carbon dioxide for methane hydrate exploitation are identified, including the influence of thermodynamic conditions, the selection of auxiliary gases, and other potential factors such as geological conditions and fluid properties. Addressing these issues is crucial for optimizing the extraction process and enhancing economic and environmental benefits. A theoretical foundation and technical reference for the application of carbon dioxide in methane hydrate exploitation are provided, while future research directions and priorities are also outlined.

Abstract:Adsorption and displacement are two important issues in the exploitation of shale gas. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are employed to study the mechanisms about adsorption and displacement of methane in carbon nanochannels. Here, the nanochannel is modeled as the slit pore. Because of the attractive potentials of the walls, more methane molecules can be stored in the slit pore compared to the bulk phase, and part of them are in the adsorption state. As the width of slit pore increases, the structure of adsorbed methane transforms from single adsorption layer to four adsorption layers. Moreover, it is found that the small slit pore fills up quicker and can store more methane than the larger one under relatively low pressure due to its deeper potential well. To displace the adsorbed methane and enhance the gas recovery, injection gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen are simulated and investigated. The displacement mechanisms of the two gases are found to be different: carbon dioxide can replace the adsorbed, methane directly while nitrogen works by decreasing the partial pressure of methane. The simulation results show that injection of carbon dioxide gives slow breakthrough time, sharp front, while injection of nitrogen gives fast breakthrough time, wide front. Our work can be of great significance for revealing the mechanisms of adsorption and displacement and guiding the exploitation of shale gas.
Molecular dynamics simulation on the displacement behaviour of crude oil by CO2/CH4 mixtures on a silica surface

Abstract:Produced gas re-injection is an effective and eco-friendly approach for enhancing oil recovery from shale oil reservoirs. However, the interactions between different gas phase components, and the oil phase and rocks are still unclear during the re-injection process. This study aims to investigate the potential of produced gas re-injection, particularly focusing on the effects of methane (CH 4 ) content in the produced gas on shale oil displacement. Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to analyze the interactions between gas, oil, and matrix phases with different CH 4 proportions (0%, 25%, 50%, and 100%), alkanes and under various burial depth. Results show that a 25% CH 4 content in the produced gas achieves almost the same displacement effect as pure carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) injection. However, when the CH 4 content increases to 50% and 100%, the interaction between gas and quartz becomes insufficient to effectively isolate oil from quartz, causing only expansion and slight dispersion. Interestingly, the presence of CH 4 has a synergistic effect on CO 2 , facilitating the diffusion of CO 2 into the oil film. During the gas stripping process, CO 2 is the main factor separating oil from quartz, while CH 4 mainly contributes to oil expansion. In addition, for crude oil containing a large amount of light alkanes, extracting light components through mixed gas may be more effective than pure CO 2 . This study offers valuable insights for applications of produced gas re-injection to promote shale oil recovery.

Abstract:Using carbon dioxide as a displacing fluid to enhance shale gas recovery is a promising technique given its potential for significant contributions to both unconventional resource development and CO2 geological sequestration. The adsorption capacity of CO2 in nanoscale shale organic pores is the key issue to evaluate the feasibility of CO2-enhanced shale gas recovery technology. However, as a result of the complex organic component of the solid surface, the fluid solid interaction between the confined fluid and the solid surface, and the intermolecular interaction between the confined fluids, the adsorption behavior of CO2 in the shale is not clear. In this work, shale organic nanopores with different geometries (slit pore and cylindrical pore) and different sizes (1, 2, and 4 nm) are constructed using molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods. Isothermal adsorption of CO2 and methane as single components and competitive adsorption of a CO2 methane binary mixture are simulated in a nanoscale methane/CO2/organic matter system. The density profile and distribution contour indicate that CO2 adsorption in shale organic mesopores does not occur via monolayer adsorption. Considering the inadaptability of the Langmuir model to analyze the CO2 adsorption curve, a modified Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) model is applied to describe and fit the data for the CO2 and methane adsorption amount, with the parameters in the modified BET model used to characterize the adsorption capacity and affinity of the fluid. The maximum adsorption amount, characteristic pressure, and selectivity parameter of CO2, methane, and a binary mixture indicate that the adsorption capacity and affinity of CO2 are stronger than those of methane under reservoir pressure, which provides useful support for enhancing shale gas recovery by injecting CO2.
Release of Methane from Nanochannels Through Displacement Using CO2

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the release of methane in quartz nanochannels through the method of displacement using carbon dioxide. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and theoretical analysis are performed to obtain the release percentage of methane for nanochannels of various diameters. It is found that both the pressure of CO2 and the channel size affect the release percentage of methane, which increases with increasing pressure of CO2 and channel diameter. Without CO2, the majority of methane molecules are adsorbed by the channel surface. When CO2 is injected into the channel, CO2 molecules replace many methane molecules due to the relatively strong molecular interactions between CO2 and the channel, which leads to the desorption of methane, reduces the energy barrier for the transport of methane, and consequently increases the release rate. Theoretical predictions using the kinetic energy of methane and the energy barrier inside the channel are also conducted, which are in good agreement with the MD simulations.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) replacement method for hydrate extraction offers advantages such as resource utilization, greenhouse gas reduction, carbon sequestration, geological stability and controllability. The enhancement of CO2 replacement efficiency for methane hydrates and the achievement of more efficient hydrate extraction have consistently been the primary focus of researchers. In this work, we explored the CO2 replacement process in methane hydrates at different temperatures above the methane hydrate phase equilibrium line using molecular simulations. The results demonstrate that the replacement process of CO2 for methane hydrates occurred spontaneously even within the equilibrium region of methane hydrates. The CO2 replacement of methane molecules in hydrates can be divided into three steps: intrusion of CO2 molecules into the semi-cage structures, methane hydrates decomposition and CO2 hydrates formation. The decomposition of methane hydrates plays a crucial role in determining the replacement process. Moreover, the replacement process was significantly affected by temperature, and CO2 showed the highest replacement efficiency at 272 K. At this temperature, CO2 molecules exhibited higher activity, rendering them more likely to disrupt the pentagonal or hexagonal ring structures of the methane hydrate cages. Our simulation results provide microscopic insights into the carbon dioxide replacement in methane hydrate below and above the freezing point.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the mechanism of guest replacement of CH4 hydrate with CO2. The well-known OPLS-AA and TIP4P potential models are used for the interactions between guest–guest and water–water species, respectively. The simulations are performed on a combination of 4×4×4 unit cell replica of fully-occupied structure I hydrate and CO2 gas phase. The simulation results confirm that CH4 is released from its hydrate and enter into the gas phase by the replacement with CO2, which has been testified by in situ Raman spectroscopic experiments. Without the hydrate dissociation, CH4 molecules are difficult to run out of while CO2 to penetrate into the interior cages of the hydrate block because of the barrier of the cage walls constructed by hydrogen-bonding network of water. It is conjectured that the replacements of CH4 hydrate with CO2 will spend long time without the dissociation, or at least slightly melting of the hydrate crystals once time. The replacement process may be divided into three steps: the cages are broken firstly, then CH4 molecules run out of the cages and meanwhile CO2 molecules enter into the void cages and occupy them in stead.

A Molecular Dynamics Study on Low-Pressure Carbon Dioxide in the Water/Oil Interface for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Abstract:Summary The microscopic displacement efficiency of supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2)-based enhanced oil recovery (EOR) depends critically on the phase behavior of CO2 and residual oil. Traditionally, we assume that the main drive mechanisms of supercritical CO2 EOR are attributed to oil swelling and reduced oil viscosity, and research focuses on how the supercritical CO2 interacts with remaining oil under the reservoir conditions. However, our recent study finds that once the CO2 is introduced into the reservoir, CO2 partitions into the aqueous and oil phases, reducing the interfacial tension (IFT) between the oil and water. This is particularly important when CO2 is generated through a series of chemical reactions for in-situ CO2 EOR. In this paper, we used molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the interfacial properties between water and oil with different mole fractions of CO2 in pressures below the minimum miscibility pressure. Simulation results show that with the increase in CO2 mole fraction, rather than evenly distributed in phases, CO2 molecules are prone to concentrate in the water/oil interface region, which decreases IFT between the aqueous phase and oil. Furthermore, the effect of CO2 orientation on the water/oil IFT reduction was observed. The change of CO2 concentration affects CO2 orientation near the interface, which in return dominates the IFT change.

Abstract:In this research, the interfacial microstructure dynamics during CO 2 flooding in tight porous reservoirs were explored through molecular dynamics simulations. Initially, the study focuses on the structural attributes of the gas–liquid interface in a static state, noting a transition from dissolution to swelling as tightness increases. Subsequently, the research diverges into two distinct areas: the quasi-static and dynamic displacement processes. The analysis of diffusivity and dissolution in the oil phase under quasi-static conditions indicates that the interaction energy between components is influenced by the degree of tightness. In contrast, during dynamic displacement at a constant pressure, tight reservoirs exert an anchoring effect, hindering the movement of the oil phase at 3 MPa. However, at 10 MPa, CO 2 is likely to achieve a gas breakthrough in less tight reservoirs, while the adsorption strength of residual oil in the reservoirs concurrently escalates. The study concludes that the stability of the interfacial region plays a dual role in determining the sustainability of liquid exchange in these processes.

Abstract:Injecting gas to enhance oil production from unconventional reservoirs dominated by nanoscale pores has been practiced in past decades with varying success, in part due to the lack of a fundamental understanding of the underlying physical processes. Here, we report molecular dynamics simulations of gas-enhanced recovery of decane from single 4 nm-wide calcite pores under reservoir conditions (383 K and 345 bar). Two gases, CO2 and CH4, are considered due to their different adsorption strength on calcite pore walls and practical considerations such as their availability and benefits for carbon sequestration. We show that, upon entering a pore, both gases form two molecular populations (free and adsorbed molecules), and their accumulation leads to the extraction of corresponding decane populations. The CO2-decane exchange is initially significantly driven by the evolution of the adsorbed populations, but a transition to the dominance by free populations occurs later; For the CH4-decane exchange, the opposite occurs. Despite this difference, the overall gas accumulation and decane extraction behavior follow the same diffusive law for CO2 and CH4 gases. The CH4-decane exchange has higher effective diffusivities than the CO2-decane exchange, i.e., CH4 enables faster decane extraction under the conditions studied here. These effective diffusivities do not always align well with the self-diffusion coefficients of CO2, CH4, and decane in nanopores.

Abstract:Methane (CH4) hydrate dissociation and the mechanism by depressurisation are investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The hydrate decomposition processes are studied by the ‘vacuum removal method’ and the normal method. It is found that the hydrate decomposition is promoted by depressurisation. The quasi-liquid layer is formed in the hydrate surface layer. The driving force of dissociation is found to be controlled by the concentration gradient between the H2O molecules of the hydrate surface layer and the H2O molecules of the hydrate inner layer. The clathrates collapse gradually, and the hydrate decomposes layer by layer. Relative to our previous MD simulation results, this study shows that the rate of the hydrate dissociation by depressurisation is slower than that by the thermal stimulation and the inhibitor injection. This study illustrated that MD simulation can play a significant role in investigating the hydrate decomposition mechanisms.

Abstract:Replacement of CH4 in hydrate form with CO2 is a candidate for recovering CH4 gas from its hydrates and storing CO2. In this work, microsecond molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the replacement mechanism of CH4 hydrate by CO2 molecules. The replacement process is found to be controlled cooperatively by the chemical potentials of guest molecules, “memory effect”, and mass transfer. The replacement pathway includes the melting of CH4 hydrate near the hydrate surface and the subsequent formation of an amorphous CO2 hydrate layer. A large number of hydrate residual rings left after the melting of CH4 hydrate facilitate the nucleation of CO2 hydrate and enhance the dynamic process, indicating the existence of so-called “memory effect”. In the dynamic aspect, the replacement process takes place near the surface of CH4 hydrate rather easily. However, as the replacement process proceeds, the formation of the amorphous layer of the CO2 hydrate provides a significant barrier to the mass transfer of the guest CH4 and CO2 molecules, which prevents the CH4 hydrate from further dissociation and slows down the replacement rate.

Abstract:In recent years, the greenhouse gas control has been a hot issue. A solution of injecting supercritical CO2 (scCO2) in Longmaxi shale gas formation (in Southwest China) is proposed in this study. To evaluate the feasibility of this method that storing CO2 and enhanced gas recovery (EGR) simultaneously, we first carried out isothermal adsorption experiments on samples from Longmaxi formation to describe the adsorption behavior of CH4 and CO2, and a generalized Ono-Kondo Lattice (OK) model was applied to predict adsorption amount of pure CH4/CO2 and their binary mixtures under supercritical, high-pressure conditions. In addition, discrete fracture network (DFN) model was adopted to characterize the complex hydraulic fracture networks constructed from micro-seismic monitoring (MSM) data and engineering analysis. The porous flow in shale matrix was modeled with the multiple interacting continua (MINC) and fractal theories. A multiscale compositional numerical model based on unstructured tri-prism grids was finally developed and solved by control volume finite element (CVFE) method. The simulation results of base and CO2 injection cases presented that scCO2 huff 'n' puff in Longmaxi formation might be an effective method for CO2 storage and EGR, and the orthogonal experiments were designed to optimize scenarios in the field application and obtain a maximum balanced result of EUR and CO2 storage capacity (CSC) for multistage fractured horizontal well (MFHW) with complex fracture networks in shale.

Abstract:Natural gas is essential in the global energy landscape due to its clean-burning properties and widespread availability. While Solidified Natural Gas (SNG) offers a promising solution for non-explosive and long-term gas storage, it confronts issues tied to toxic additives and substantial water-related expenses. This work addressed these challenges by employing the environmentally benign promoter 1,3-dioxane to synthesize sII methane hydrate in artificial seawater. The concentration of 1,3-dioxane employed in this study spans 2.5 mol%, 4 mol%, the stoichiometric concentration of 5.56 mol%, and 7 mol%. The phase equilibrium points slightly downwards shift as the concentration of 1,3-dioxane increases. Under initial conditions of 10 MPa/283.2 K, the CH4/dioxane (4.00 mol%)/seawater system exhibited a methane storage capacity of 80.66 (+/- 0.74) v/v, which closely approached the highest level of 83.54 (+/- 1.48) v/v achieved in the stoichiometric 1,3-dioxane (5.56 mol%) system. The excess 1,3-dioxane (7.00 mol%) system exhibited the highest methane uptake rate of 2.11 (+/- 0.06) v/ v/min in the initial 10 min. In situ Raman spectroscopic analyses confirmed the early emergence of encaged guest molecules with increasing 1,3-dioxane concentration. Molecular dynamic simulations revealed that the aggre-gation of additional guest molecules impeded the formation of well-defined hydrate structures. These findings contribute to the advancement of methane storage in seawater-based hydrates.

Abstract:Fundamental understandings of nanoconfined methane (CH4) are crucial to improving the exploitation of tight gas. In this study, diffusivity, one of the key transport properties of high-temperature and high-pressure methane gas, is examined under confinement in the silica nanochannels by using molecular dynamics simulations by employing Einstein diffusion equation. It was found that the diffusivity of nanoconfined methane is obviously anisotropic, namely, the perpendicular diffusion coefficient is lower than that in the longitudinal direction. The anisotropic diffusivity of nanoconfined methane is attributed to the restricted effect of potential interactions from the atoms of walls, which is verified by analyzing the diffusivity of methane molecules in the potential wells with Lagrangian dynamics. The diffusion coefficients of nanoconfined methane decrease with the increase of atomic potentials in the wall, which can be explained by the density distributions of methane in the nanochannels. Furthermore, we reveal the dependence of the diffusivity of nanoconfined methane on the channel height and confining effect of the wall on the diffusivity of methane molecules. The obtained results can provide a molecular insight into the transport properties of methane confined in nanospace and a theoretical guidance for the efficient extraction of tight gas.
Giant Effect of CO2 Injection on Multiphase Fluid Adsorption and Shale Gas Production: Evidence from Molecular Dynamics

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) injection in unconventional gas-bearing shale reservoirs is a promising method for enhancing methane recovery efficiency and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. The majority of methane is adsorbed within the micropores and nanopores (≤50 nm) of shale, which possess extensive surface areas and abundant adsorption sites for the sequestration system. To comprehensively discover the underlying mechanism of enhanced gas recovery (EGR) through CO2 injection, molecular dynamics (MD) provides a promising way for establishing the shale models to address the multiphase, multicomponent fluid flow behaviors in shale nanopores. This study proposes an innovative method for building a more practical shale matrix model that approaches natural underground environments. The grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method elucidates gas adsorption and sequestration processes in shale gas reservoirs under various subsurface conditions. The findings reveal that previously overlooked pore slits have a significant impact on both gas adsorption and recovery efficiency. Based on the simulation comparisons of absolute and excess uptakes inside the kerogen matrix and the shale slits, it demonstrates that nanopores within the kerogen matrix dominate the gas adsorption while slits dominate the gas storage. Regarding multiphase, multicomponent fluid flow in shale nanopores, moisture negatively influences gas adsorption and carbon storage while promoting methane recovery efficiency by CO2 injection. Additionally, saline solution and ethane further impede gas adsorption while facilitating displacement. Molecular dynamic simulations of methane hydrate formation between solid surfaces: Implications for methane storage

Abstract:Gas hydrates have essential industrial and climate implications in energy exploitation and novel technologies. Hydrate nucleation and growth typically develop under substrate-contact conditions; surface properties affect hydrate formation pathways. Microscopic insights into the effects of solid surfaces on hydrate formation would improve reservoir exploitation and the synthesis and regulation of promoters for hydrate-based methane storage. We thus performed microsecond-scale molecular dynamic simulations to investigate methane hydrate formation in CH4-H2O-substrate systems varying substrate surface hydrophilicity. The evolution of several parameters suggested that the methane storage capacity was controlled by the proportions of surface methyl and hydroxyl groups. The mutually coordinated guest (MCG) was a superior indicator of hydrate nuclei since it recognized all methane separated by water rings in hydrate structures. As surface hydrophilicity decreased, the size of the crystal nucleus shrank, and the amount of captured methane decreased; nevertheless, the nucleation pathways shifted from amorphous to crystalline. Moreover, given the crucial interactions between MCG/four-body order parameters and interaction energy/host-guest local distributions, the underlying mechanisms of hydrate for-mation were well-represented using two-and three-step microscopic models. Our findings show how solid surface properties influence multi-stage hydrate nucleation and will contribute to developing additives that efficiently promote hydrate formation.
Nanoscale Insights into CO2 Enhanced Shale Gas Recovery in Gas-Water Coexisting Kerogen Nanopores

Abstract:The presence of water clusters in kerogen nanopores reduces the occurrence and migration of methane (CH4) and thus affects shale gas extraction. CO2 injection, as an effective approach to enhance shale gas recovery, still presents challenges in its ability to mitigate the impact of immobile water clusters within the kerogen. In this work, molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate the microscopic transport process of water clusters and CH4 following CO2 injection in the gas-water coexisting kerogen nanopores. The results demonstrate that CO2 can desorb irreducible water clusters to dredge the pores while extracting CH4, enhancing gas-water mobility, and shale gas recovery by transitioning the wettability of the kerogen nanopore surface from weakly water-wet to CO2-wet. The impact of CO2 on the wettability of kerogen surfaces is primarily manifested in two aspects: CO2 can intrude the interface between water clusters and kerogen to reduce the number of hydrogen bonds between them, resulting in the detachment of water clusters; and the surface of kerogen nanopores can form a layer of CO2 gas film, which prevents desorbed water clusters and CH4 from readsorbing onto the wall surface. This study provides important insights in enhancing the understanding of the microscopic mechanisms in nanoscale flow, as well as for the development of an unconventional gas reservoir.
