Abstract:Algae was widely observed on composite insulators in hot and humid climate, which affected external insulation performance of polymeric insulating materials especially on hydrophobic properties. To fully understand the hydrophobic behavior of algae-fouled insulators, this paper simulated algae growing process on silicon rubbers (SIRs) surface under artificial laboratory conditions. Hydrophobicity tests and hydrophobic recovery tests were conducted on SIRs colonized with different number of algae cells, and the hydrophobic capacity was judged by its hydrophobicity class (HC) and contact angle (CA). Micro structure of SIRs was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results showed that algae reduced SIRs intrinsic surface hydrophobicity with the various microorganism population, or even decreased flashover at worst. Relative humidity (RH) had a significant effect on algae colonized SIR hydrophobicity. The research on the algae contaminated insulators was important for the operation and maintenance of composite insulators.
