Abstract:Hollow spheres self-assembled by MoO2 nanocones.Controllable morphology and SERS property.Best SERS oxide with an EF of 3 × 107.Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy attracts great interests for its ability to detect a variety of molecules at trace level. However, the commonly used noble metal substrates suffer from high cost, poor biocompatibility and inferior stability. Some oxides have the potential to substitute for noble metal and much effort has been made to improve their performance. In this paper, MoO2 nanocones were prepared and self-assembled into hollow spheres. The structure exhibits an enhancement factor (EF) of 3 × 107 and a limit of detection (LOD) of 10−9 M for Rhodamine 6G (R6G), and this performance is among the best of all the oxides and is comparable to that of Au and Ag. Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS) can provide molecular fingerprint peaks of the vibration information with great specificity and sensitivity. It is widely used in biomedical and chemical fields. Semiconductor-based substrates represent a hot spot in the field of SERS beyond conventional noble metals, and metal-organic frameworks are rarely realized for SER detection. Here, we modulate the energy-band structures of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) further by metal oxides (MOs) to match the energy band of a target analyte. We construct MOF-encapsulated metal oxide core-shell nanoparticles (MO@MOFs) as substrates for Raman enhancement. Attributed to the high structural tailorability of both core and shell, a series of energy-band structures have been created. We perform SERS detection of rhodamine b (RhB) on MO@MOF and find that the enhanced factor of Fe3O4@MOF(Co) and TiO2@MOF(Ni) reach as high as 10(8) and 10(6), respectively, with low detection limits of 10(-8) M, much lower than that using the corresponding MOFs. The SERS enhancement is based on mechanisms including charge transfer, interband and molecule resonances, and ground-state charge-transfer interactions. This work will promote the application of semiconductor-based nanomaterials with special modularity for surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates.

Abstract:Abstract Cavity array, with excellent optical capture capability, has received increasing attention for the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-active substrates. Here, we proposed molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanocavities growing on pyramid Si (PSi) composed of in situ reduced Au nanoparticles (AuNPs), which can form the multiscale cavities (MSCs), and is facile for the couple of the plasmon. We demonstrated that the PSi/MoS 2 /Au MSCs can serve as highly sensitive, uniform, and stable SERS substrates for rhodamine 6G (R6G), crystal violet, and adenosine triphosphate detection, benefiting from the synergistic effect of the enhanced light trapping and the effective plasmonic couple. The couple of the plasmon in the MSCs is evidently proved by finite-difference time domain simulation, showing the strong electromagnetic field is located around the cavity wall. Moreover, the excellent hydrophobicity of the PSi/MoS 2 /AuNPs substrate endows it with the ability for the directional monitoring of organic pollutant in a mixture of oil and water. Finally, we demonstrated the MSCs with outstanding photocatalytic performance could achieve the renewable utilization by self-cleaning, which was attributed to the fast electron transfer and effective light absorption. The proposed PSi/MoS 2 /AuNPs MSC represents a robust mean using the plasmonic metal/semiconductor heterostructure for high-performance SERS sensors and photodegradation.

Abstract:Colloidal plasmonic metal nanoparticles are capable of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for various analytical fields. Despite steady efforts to establish hot spots and obtain optimal SERS signals, it remains a challenge to ensure the accessibility and high density for enhancing Raman activity. Here, pyramid silicon was utilized as a template to fabricate the graphene oxide (GO)/silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)/pyramid polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) three-dimension (3D) flexible structure. Micrographs displayed the hybrid structure inherited the periodic 3D nanostructure with the pyramid microstructure, and the results exhibited that the proposed substrate possesses superior SERS performance with high sensitivity, homogeneity and stability. The enhancement factor reached up to 8.1 × 109 using rhodamine 6G as the probe molecules. Besides, the in situ detection of the malachite green (MG) on the shrimp’s surface was carried out to achieve and detect surface analytes. This work can provide a novel assembled SERS substrate as SERS-based biological detection in practical applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted widespread interest due to their unique and unprecedented advantages in microstructures and properties. Besides, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology has also rapidly developed into a powerful fingerprint spectroscopic technique that can provide rapid, non-invasive, non-destructive, and ultra-sensitive detection, even down to single molecular level. Consequently, a considerable amount of researchers combined MOFs with the SERS technique to further improve the sensing performance and broaden the applications of SERS substrates. Herein, representative synthesis strategies of MOFs to fabricate SERS-active substrates are summarized and their applications in ultra-sensitive biomedical trace detection are also reviewed. Besides, relative barriers, advantages, disadvantages, future trends, and prospects are particularly discussed to give guidance to relevant researchers.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), due to its extreme sensitivity down to the single molecule level, has been a superior analytical technique for (bio)chemical sensing and monitoring. However, the reliability of SERS has been a major issue since its discovery and has not yet been fully addressed, which is largely due to the lack of properly designed SERS substrates and facile, cost-effective fabrication strategies of metallic nanostructures. Herein, we employ hierarchical metallic nanopatterns as active SERS substrates, which can be facilely fabricated by superplastic nanomolding of bulk metals with hierarchical anodic aluminum oxide templates. The SERS signals of such hierarchical metal substrates show both high sensitivity (SERS intensity of up to 10(6) with an enhancement factor of similar to 7.0 X 10(5)) and reproducibility (relative standard deviation as low as 7%) with an optimized configuration, which significantly outperforms that without hierarchical nanostructures. Our results reveal that the microcavities of the hierarchical molds can significantly reduce the nonuniform plastic deformation of the bulk metals caused by surface roughness, while the nanoholes in the microcavities yield densely packed nanopillars with exceptional SERS signals. These hierarchical metallic nanostructures are further applied for the detection of biomolecules and organic dyes with concentrations as low as 10(-10) M, whose SERS intensity still presents a prominent signal-to-noise ratio. Such facile and scalable fabrication of hierarchical metallic nanostructures not only sheds light on the key factors that affect the uniformity and sensitivity of SERS but also provides guidelines for rational design of superior SERS substrates with outstanding performances, which is of great implication for (bio)chemical sensing and pollutant monitoring.

Abstract:Plasmonic materials have been extensively explored for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) due to their high tunability and excellent localized electric field enhancement. Most research for now has focused on noble metals, with limited investigation into corrosion-resistant materials for SERS effects. In this study, a photolithography process is firstly used to create a patterned dot array on a silicon substrate. Next, magnetron sputtering is employed to deposit molybdenum films, finally resulting in the molybdenum truncated cone array substrates for SERS applications. The fabricated truncated cone array experimentally facilitates the coupling of localized surface plasmon polaritons, consistent with simulation results obtained via the finite-difference time-domain method. The formation of hot spots between the cone unit cell arrays leads to the improved Raman signals and can act as traps for target molecules. This study demonstrates that molybdenum-based micro-nano structures can serve as reliable SERS substrates for sensitive molecular sensing applications in highly corrosive environments.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are composed of crystalline microporous materials with metal ions, have gained considerable interest as promising substrate materials for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection via charge transfer. Research on MOF-based SERS substrates has advanced rapidly because of the MOFs' excellent structural tunability, functionalizable pore interiors, and ultrahigh surface-to-volume ratios. Compared with traditional noble metal SERS plasmons, MOFs exhibit better biocompatibility, ease of operation, and tailorability. However, MOFs cannot produce a sufficient limit of detection (LOD) for ultrasensitive detection, and therefore, developing an ultrasensitive MOF-based SERS substrate is imperative. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to develop an MOFs/heterojunction structure as an SERS enhancing material. We report an in situ ZIF-67/Co(OH)2 heterojunction-based nanocellulose paper (nanopaper) plate (in situ ZIF-67 nanoplate) as a device with an LOD of 0.98 nmol/L for Rhodamine 6G and a Raman enhancement of 1.43 × 107, which is 100 times better than that of the pure ZIF-67-based SERS substrate. Further, we extend this structure to other types of MOFs and develop an in situ HKUST-1 nanoplate (with HKUST-1/Cu(OH)2). In addition, we demonstrate that the formation of heterojunctions facilitates efficient photoinduced charge transfer for SERS detection by applying the Mx(OH)y-assisted (where M = Co, Cu, or other metals) MOFs/heterojunction structure. Finally, we successfully demonstrate the application of medicine screening on our nanoplates, specifically for omeprazole. The nanoplates we developed still maintain the tailorability of MOFs and perform high anti-interference ability. Our approach provides customizing options for MOF-based SERS detection, catering to diverse possibilities in future research and applications.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a non-destructive spectra analysis technique. It has the virtues of high detectivity and sensitivity, which has been extensively studied for low-trace molecule detection. In the choices of SERS substrate materials, low-cost and abundant reserved transitional metal oxides/chalcogenides materials have been regarded as a promising substitute of noble metals, however their inferior SERS enhancement severely limits the practical application. Herein, it is demonstrated a kind of MoS 2 /MoO x heterostructures for significantly improved SERS performance. Experimentally, MoS 2 /MoO x heterostructures was prepared by precisely controlled oxidation of the MoS 2 nanospheres in ultraviolet-ozone environment, and the optimal SERS substrate was obtained by 14 hours of ultraviolet-ozone irradiation. SERS measurement exhibited that superior SERS performance with the detection limit of 10 -7 M (rhodamine 6G) and an enhancement factor of 7.477×10 6 (R6G@10 -7 M) could be obtained. Finally, the intuitive SERS enhancement mechanism were investigated by energy band analysis, it revealed that the constructed heterostructures enhanced the electron-hole separation, and the electrons were successively transferred to the analytes, and significantly promoted the molecular polarizability, improving the SERS performance.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based signal detection and molecular identification faces the lack of reproducibility and reliability thus hampers its practical applications. Here, we demonstrate a facile particle mediated aggregation protocol to synthesize highly roughened mesosuperstructure - silver polyhedral mesocages. The individual silver octahedral mesocage, owing to highly-roughed surface topography, anisotropic growth as well as intraparticle effect, creates homogenously distributed multiple effective hot spots on the surface of single mesoparticle, hereby exhibits a high reproducibility and an unusual SERS enhancement, i.e., ∼108–109 magnitude. As such, the current protocol opens avenues for the fabrication of structurally reproducible mesosuperstructure-based SERS sensors.
Mesoporous Nanostructures Encapsulated with Metallic Nanodots for Smart SERS Sensing

Abstract:In virtue of uniform mesopores and core–shell nanoarchitectures, metallic nanodot-encapsulated hollow mesoporous nanostructures have shown promising potential in various applications. However, their fabrication with versatile tunability of the encapsulated metallic content has been a challenge. Herein, we have prepared metallic nanodot-encapsulated hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (M-HMSNPs) with adjustable inner metallic components. The sacrificial template of polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles precoated with metals (Au/Ag/Pt) is fully wrapped with mesoporous silica (mSiO2). The metallic nanodots are formed during the template removal process by calcination. The type and content of the encapsulated nanodots can be readily and precisely controlled by the initially deposited metallic layers. We demonstrate the application of the gold (Au) nanodot-loaded HMSNPs (denoted Au-HMSNPs) as smart surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) probes, which can screen between big molecules and small analytes. With the aid of a Raman reporter, the SERS probe can successfully quantify H2O2, which is used to distinguish cancer cells in vitro. Further integrated with enzymes, the SERS chips of specificity are prepared and used to detect corresponding substrates of glucose and uric acid, responsively. A metallic molybdenum dioxide with high stability for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Abstract:Compared with noble metals, semiconductors with surface plasmon resonance effect are another type of SERS substrate materials. The main obstacles so far are that the semiconducting materials are often unstable and easy to be further oxidized or decomposed by laser irradiating or contacting with corrosive substances. Here, we report that metallic MoO2 can be used as a SERS substrate to detect trace amounts of highly risk chemicals including bisphenol A (BPA), dichloropheno (DCP), pentachlorophenol (PCP) and so on. The minimum detectable concentration was 10−7 M and the maximum enhancement factor is up to 3.75 × 106. To the best of our knowledge, it may be the best among the metal oxides and even reaches or approaches to Au/Ag. The MoO2 shows an unexpected high oxidation resistance, which can even withstand 300 °C in air without further oxidation. The MoO2 material also can resist long etching of strong acid and alkali.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with unique molecular vibrational fingerprints for identifying analytes provides an effective spectroscopic approach for the detection of trace molecules in biomedical/analytical fields. Although a great amount of efforts has been devoted to developing various SERS substrates with hierarchical micro/nanostructures, challenges remain in completely concentrating the target molecules within a sensitive area and thereby enhancing detection sensitivity. Here, we report trace molecular detection using superhydrophobic microcrater array as surface-enhanced Raman substrate (SMA-SERS). The hierarchically ordered microcrater array with plasmonic nanoparticle clusters is quickly obtained by the two-step process of femtosecond laser texturing and magnetron sputtering. The resultant substrates with hierarchical micro-/nanostructures show excellent superhydrophobicity with a contact angle above 150° and satisfactory plasmonic nanostructures with the easily attainable Raman signal enhancement factor of ~4.82 × 108. The signals on the SMA-SERS maintain uniformity with a relative standard deviation of <15%. These findings manifest that the SMA-SERS is an extraordinary strong candidate for obtaining high-quality and reliable SERS, facilitating a widespread use of SERS for practical applications.

Abstract:Fabricate surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate with low cost and high performance through simple method is a challenge and worthy of work. Herein, an excellent Cu2O SERS substrate with porous octahedron structure was synthesized by brief calcining Cu-MOFs in Ar, air and H2/Ar gas environment at 350 °C successively. The as-obtained octahedral Cu2O was utilized as SERS substrate to measure dye molecules and organic pollutants, which exhibited splendid sensitivity for the detection of methylene blue and 4-mercaptopyridine (4-MPY) with the ultralow limit of 5 × 10–9 M and 5 × 10–10 M, respectively. The maximum relative standard deviation for detection of 4-MPY is as low as 12.3%, which is less than limiting step in quantitative SERS (15.0%). The above excellent results are due to outstanding synergistic effect of electromagnetic enhancement of oxygen vacancy on the Cu2O surface and chemical enhancement of the Cu–S bonds formation. The fabricated Cu2O possesses superior sensitivity, selectivity and reproducibility for SERS detection of probe molecules with sulfhydryl groups and may be a prospect candidate in the practical application.Graphical AbstractAn excellent Cu2O SERS substrate with porous octahedron structure was synthesized by simple calcining Cu-MOFs in Ar, air and H2/Ar gas environment at 350 °C successively. Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), as a molecular-specific spectroscopy method using plasmonic nanostructures to significantly enhance Raman spectroscopy, has broad application prospects in various fileds. In our work, the Ag/CuO nanowires (NWs)/pyramidal PDMS multiscale structure were rationally fabricated as a multi-dimensional plasmon coupling SERS substrate with molecular enrichment effect. CuO NWs were grown in the pyramid cavity by alkaline etching and formed micro-nano multiscale strucure. The Ag film was decorated on the nano-micro multiscale structure by physical vapor deposition method, endowing the SERS activity. The subwavelength-size Ag/CuO NWs can also provide a rough enough surface to separate the droplets from the air, reduce the surface energy, and achieve a hydrophobic effect. To demonstrate the SERS activity, the proposed multiscale micro-nano structure has been successfully applied to sensitively detect Rhodamine 6G (R6G) at low concentration. Interestingly, we also demonstrate that the Ag/CuO NWs/pyramidal PDMS multiscale structure has excellent molecular adsorption for practical application detection. We successfully achieve the detection for the mixture of R6G, Crystal Violet (CV) and Congo Red (CR) molecule under turbid and different PH environment, which demonstrates its great potential for in-situ detection of chemical dye molecules in complex environments.

Abstract:Noble metal and semiconductor composite substrates possess high sensitivity, excellent stability, good biocompatibility, and selective enhancement, making them an important research direction in the field of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Ta2O5, as a semiconductor material with high thermal stability, corrosion resistance, outstanding optical properties, and catalytic performance, has great potential in SERS research. This study aims to design and fabricate a composite SERS substrate based on Ta2O5 nanostructures, achieving optimal detection performance by combining the urchin-like structure of Ta2O5 with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The urchin-like Ta2O5 nanostructures were prepared using a hydrothermal reaction method. The bandgap was modulated through structure design and the self-doping technique, the charge transfer efficiency and surface plasmon resonance effects were improved, thereby achieving better SERS performance. The composite substrate enables highly sensitive quantitative detection. This composite SERS substrate combines the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism (EM) and chemical enhancement mechanism (CM), achieving ultra-low detection limits of 10-13 M for R6G. Within the concentration range above 10-12 M, there is a good linear relationship between concentration and peak intensity, demonstrating excellent quantitative analysis capabilities. Furthermore, this composite SERS substrate is capable of precise detection of analytes such as crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB), holding broad application prospects in areas such as food safety and environmental monitoring.
Molybdenum Oxide/Tungsten Oxide Nano-heterojunction with Improved Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Performance

Abstract:By virtue of their high uniformity and stability, metal oxide-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates have attracted enormous attention for molecular trace detection. However, strategies for further enhancing the SERS sensitivity are still desired. Herein, MoOx/WOx nano-heterojunctions are constructed by mixing MoOx and WOx together (MoOx/WOx hybrid) with diverse weight ratios. Using a 532 nm laser as the excitation source and R6G as the Raman reporter, it is shown that the Raman signal intensity (for the peak @ 1360 cm–1) obtained on the optimal MoOx/WOx hybrid (MoOx/WOx = 1:1/3) is twice that observed on a pure MoOx or WOx substrate. Moreover, a limit of detection of 10–8 M and an enhancement factor of 108 are achieved. In the SERS enhancement mechanism investigation, it is revealed that MoOx and WOx form a staggered band structure. During the SERS measurement, electron–hole pairs are generated in the nano-heterojunction using the incident laser. They are then separated by the built-in potential with the electrons moving toward WOx. The accumulated electrons on WOx are further transferred to the R6G molecules through the coupling of orbitals. Consequently, the molecular polarizability is amplified, and SERS performance is enhanced. Abstract:The design and fabrication of novel and robust surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate are crucial for the widespread application of SERS technique in the fields of chemistry, biology, and environmental science. Recently, metal organic framework (MOF) material has emerged as attractive material with many unique properties such as high porosity, tunable structure, and rich functionalities. With the help of MOF material, MOF-based SERS substrate can show high sensitivity, excellent selectivity and outstanding stability. Herein, we have reviewed the latest research progress of MOF-based SERS substrate. We mainly focus on the design principles for MOF-based SERS substrates according to the roles of MOF material. Then the recent applications of MOF-based SERS substrates have been summarized. Finally, the future challenges and potential opportunities in the development of MOF-based SERS substrates are discussed.
