Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) derived from biomass is a versatile platform chemical for producing various degradable polymers, especially polyethylene 2,5-furandicarbox-ylate (PEF). To reduce the high cost of feedstock, fructose instead of expensive 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was used as the feedstock for producing FDCA in the acetic acid (HOAc) solvent by a one-pot, two-step method. Fructose was first catalytically converted into HMF and 5-acetoxymethylfurfural (AMF) in HOAc over the Amberlyst-15 catalyst. After the separation of only Amberlyst-15, the in situ-formed HMF and AMF were further catalytically oxidized to FDCA by air (oxygen) over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts following the free-radical chain reaction mechanism. HOAc was not only used as the solvent for the dehydration and following oxidation process but also served as the effective co-catalyst for the dehydration of fructose. The effects of catalyst species, dosage, and reaction temperature on the dehydration process and oxidation temperature on FDCA yield and purity were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a total yield of HMF and AMF of 50% and a final FDCA yield of 35% were achieved. Combined with experimental results and theoretical calculation, the reaction mechanism for fructose dehydration side reactions and the HMF and AMF oxidation reactions was proposed correspondingly. The proposed two-step, one-pot method using fructose as the starting material is a promising route for the commercial production of FDCA with the simple operation and viable yield.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a high-valuebiomass-derived platform chemical derived from renewablebiomass, which is a great alternative to petroleum-based chemicals;however, it cannot be produced on a large scale at present becauseof the limitation of a low HMF yield and costly production. In thiswork, an experimental study of one-pot production of HMF fromglucose in an acetone-water solvent was conducted. The effects ofinorganic salts (in specific, NaCl) on miscible solvents were studiedbecause inorganic salts could affect the phase structure of solvents.We also study the influence of the ratio between Lewis acid andBronsted acid (L/B) on the dehydration reaction. After parameteroptimization experiments, up to 64.5% HMF yield was obtained at the condition ofC0= 1.25 w/v %,CAlCl3= 1.25 w/v %,CHCl=10mmolmiddotL-1,T= 160 degrees C, ando/a= 80/20, and the optimized L/B was 1.25 kgmiddotmol-1. Finally, an economic and efficient HMFproduction process including HMF purification and catalyst recycling was proposed; the HMF product could be produced andseparated with high recovery (similar to 88%) and purity (similar to 85%) in the process. Ourfindings and analysis would provide support for thechoice of the reaction system and bifunctional catalyst synthesis in the subsequent industrial demonstration development
Liquid-Phase Aerobic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid over Co/Mn/Br Catalyst

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), mainly synthesized by the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased monomer for high-performance polymers. In this work, we have a comprehensive investigation on the rapid and highly selective oxidation process of HMF to FDCA in acetic acid (HAc) with Co/Mn/Br catalyst and air as the oxidant. It was found that both aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups of HMF could be first oxidized in the sequential oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was the main oxidation intermediate. Apart from the side reaction of HMF overoxidation to COx (CO and CO2) and HMF condensation to polymers, a small part of HMF will be further oxidized to maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) via the ring-opening reactions under severe conditions because of the instability of furan ring. To reduce the side reactions and maximize the FDCA yield, the effects of temperature, pressure, substrate solvent ratio, catalyst composition and concentration, and water concentration on the main reactions and side reactions of the HMF oxidation were systematically evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the selectivity of FDCA reached 92% with the total conversion of HMF in less than 20 min at a high mass ratio of substrate and solvent (1/9), and the purity of FDCA exceeded 99.8%. The experimental results provide a great reference and inspiration for the optimization of the HMF oxidation process and the large-scale production of FDCA.

Abstract:Non-noble metal catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of biomass using biomass-derived formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source is one of promising strategies for relieving fossil energy crisis. Since acidic FA would destroy and deactivate naked active sites, developing heterogeneous catalysts with stabilized structure and activity that are qualified in harsh conditions is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, mesoporous N-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (Co-N-C) are synthesized through a facile carbonization of Co(phen)(2)(OAc)(2) with nano-MgO as porogen agent. After acid treatment, the optimized Co-N-C-700 (pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C) could afford full furfural (FAL) conversion as well as > 99% furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity with only 3.5 equiv. FA at 150 degrees C for 6 h, exhibiting much superior performance than commercial Pd-, Pt- and Ru-based catalysts. Using molecular H-2 as hydrogen source not only affords low conversion but also leads to over-hydrogenation of FOL and generation of furfuryl formate (FF). This catalyst is very stable in acidic FA and could be recycled 5 times without deactivation or leaching. Co-N-C-700 is also capable for gram-scale transfer hydrogenation of FAL and is versatile for other aldehydes with > 90% yield of desired products. This work could promote the application of encapsulated Co-based catalysts for selective transformation of biomass in chemical industry.

Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.

Abstract:It is of great significance to convert platform molecules and their derivatives into high value-added alcohols, which have multitudinous applications. This study concerns systematic conversion of 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF), which is obtained from furfural, into 1-pentanol acetate (PA) and 1,4-pentanediol acetate (PDA). Reaction parameters, such as the Lewis acid species, reaction temperature, and hydrogen pressure, were investigated in detail. (HNMR)-H-1 spectroscopy and reaction dynamics study were also conducted to help clarify the reaction mechanism. Results suggested that cleavage of the primary alcohol acetate was less facile than that of the secondary alcohol acetate, with the main product being PA. A PA yield of 91.8% (150 degrees C, 3MPaH(2), 30 min) was achieved by using Pd/C and Sc(OTf)(3) as a cocatalytic system and an 82% yield of PDA was achieved (150 degrees C, 30 min) by using Sc(OTf)(3) catalyst. Simultaneously, the efficient conversion of acetic esters into alcohols by simple saponification was carried out and led to a good yield.

Abstract:Efficient conversion of renewable biomass platform chemicals into high-quality fuels remains challenging. A one-pot catalytic approach has been developed to synthesize various structurally defined biofuels by using Hf(OTf)4 and Pd/C for selective tandem catalysis and 2-methylfuran (2-MF) as a renewable feedstock. 2-MF first undergoes Lewis acid-catalyzed hydroxyalkylation/alkylation (HAA) condensation with carbonyl compounds to afford intermediates containing the targeted carbon skeletons of hydrocarbon or ether products, and these intermediates then undergo hydrogenation or hydrodeoxygenation to afford the target products, catalyzed by metal triflate+Pd/C in the same pot. The present process can produce structurally defined alkanes and cyclic ethers under mild conditions.

Abstract:This contribution focuses on one-step hydrogenation–esterification (OHE) of furfural and acetic acid, which are difficult to treat and typically present in crude bio-oil, as a model reaction for bio-oil upgrading. A bifunctional catalyst is needed for OHE reaction. Among tested bifunctional catalysts, the 5%Pd/Al2(SiO3)3 shows the best catalytic performance. Compared to the physical mixture of 5%Pd/C+Al2(SiO3)3, there is a synergistic effect between metal sites and acid sites over 5%Pd/Al2(SiO3)3 for the OHE reaction. A moderate reaction condition would be required to obtain high yields of alcohol and ester along with lower byproduct yields. In this work, the optimum selectivity to desired products (alcohol and ester) of 66.4% is obtained, where the conversion of furfural is 56.9%. Other components, typically present in bio-oils, have little effects on the OHE of FAL and HAc. This OHE method is a promising route for efficient upgrading of bio-oil.

Abstract:Nanoporous aluminosilicate materials efficiently catalyze the formation of furaldehyde dimethyl acetal directly from methanol in high yields and in short reaction times. The facile nature of this reaction has led to the development of a telescoped protocol in which the acyclic acetal is produced in situ and subsequently functions as a substrate for a transacetalization reaction with glycerol to produce the corresponding dioxane and dioxolane products, which are potentially useful biofuel additives. These products are generated in high yield without the requirement for high reaction temperatures of prolonged reaction times, and the aluminosilicate catalysts are operationally simple to produce, are effective with either purified furaldehyde or crude furaldehyde, and are fully recyclable.

Abstract:Biomass is expected to be a substitute for traditional fossil fuels because it is renewable and environmentally friendly. Bio-oil, as an important utilization of biomass, has a complex composition. Accordingly, it remains a great challenge for oxygenated compounds in bio-oil to be upgraded, especially for furfural. In this research, a highly active catalyst with 1 wt% palladium supported on activated carbon (Pd/AC) was prepared by impregnating Pd species on modified activated carbon, which was applied to furfural catalytic hydrogenation in super critical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)). The conversion rate (79%) was higher than that obtained in toluene as solvent (60%). A selectivity of furfuralcohol and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol of up to 100% was achieved in scCO(2) conditions with no byproducts obtained. In contrast, the total selectivity was only 60% using ethanol as solvent. Meanwhile, the reaction conditions in the scCO(2) including hydrogen pressure and catalyst amount have been investigated. The Pd/AC catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, IR and BET techniques. A green solvent, and high activity and selectivity present real advantages of this method over other methods.

Abstract:Upgrading biomass-derived phenolic compounds provides a valu-able approach for the production of higher-value-added fuels and chemicals. However, most established catalytic systems display low hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) activities even under harsh reaction conditions. Here, we found that Pd supported on -NH2-modified hi-erarchically porous carbon (Pd/HPC-NH2) with formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source exhibits unprecedented performance for the se-lective HDO of benzylic ketones from crude lignin-derived oxygen-ates. Designed experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the H+/H-species generated from FA decomposition acceler-ates nucleophilic attack on carbonyl carbon in benzylic ketones and the formate species formed via the esterification of intermedi-ate alcohol with FA expedites the cleavage of C-O bonds, achieving a TOF of 152.5 h-1 at 30 degrees C for vanillin upgrading, 15 times higher than that in traditional HDO processes (-10 h-1, 100 degrees C-300 degrees C). This work provides an intriguing green route to produce transporta-tion fuels or valuable chemicals from only biomass under mild conditions.

Abstract:The development of a simple and durable catalytic system for the production of chemicals from a high concentration of a substrate is important for biomass conversion. In this manuscript, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was converted to 1-hydroxy-2,5-hexanedione (HHD) using the combination of commercial Pd/C and acetic acid (AcOH) in water. The influence of temperature, H2 pressure, reaction time, catalyst amount and the concentration of AcOH and HMF on this transformation was investigated. A 68% yield of HHD was able to be obtained from HMF at a 13.6 wt% aqueous solution with a 98% conversion of HMF. The resinification of intermediates on the catalyst was characterized to be the main reason for the deactivation of Pd/C. The reusability of the used Pd/C was studied to find that most of the activity could be recovered by being washed in hot tetrahydrofuran.

Selective Activation of C–OH, C–O–C, or C═C in Furfuryl Alcohol by Engineered Pt Sites Supported on Layered Double Oxides

Abstract:The selective activation of targeted bonds in biomass-derived furfural or furfuryl alcohol with complex chemical linkages (C–C/C–H/C–O, C═C/C═O, or C–O–H/C–O–C) is of great challenge for biomass upgrading, expecting well-defined catalyst and definite catalytically active sites. This work demonstrates an efficient targeted activation to C–OH, C–O–C, or C═C by engineering the structure of catalytic Pt sites, affording 2-methylfuran (2-MF), tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA), or 1,2-pentanediol (1,2-PeD) as product in the hydroconversion of furfuryl alcohol. The catalytic Pt sites have been engineered as atomic Pt, coordination unsaturated Pt–Pt in atom-thick dispersion, or coordination unsaturated 3D Pt–Pt by tailoring the Pt dispersion (single atom, 2D cluster, or 3D cluster) on Mg and Al-containing layered double oxide (Mg(Al)O) support. The selective activation of C–OH, C–O–C, or C═C has been traced with the FT-IR spectra recorded surface reaction. On atomic Pt, C–O–H is easily activated, with the assistance of Mg(Al)O support, with O-terminal adsorption without affecting furan C–O and C═C. However, C═C in the furan ring is easier to be activated on coordination-unsaturated Pt–Pt in atom-thick dispersion, resulting in a step-by-step hydrogenation to generate THFA. On coordination-unsaturated 3D Pt–Pt, the hydrogenolysis of furan ring is favored, resulting in the cleavage of furan C–O to produce 1,2-PeD. Abstract:Al-SBA-15 supported palladium bifunctional catalysts were evaluated for one-step hydrogenation–esterification (OHE) of furfural and acetic acid as a model reaction for bio-oil upgrading. Experimental results show that it is viable to convert these unstable constituents of bio-oil to esters and alcohols through this simple and effective OHE reaction. The results of NH3–TPD and catalytic performances show that Al-SBA-15 with medium ratio of Si/Al favors the OHE reaction between furfural and acetic acid. It is noteworthy that there is a synergistic effect between the metal sites and the acid sites over composite bifunctional catalyst of 5%Pd/Al-SBA-15 for the OHE reaction.

Abstract:The utilization of 5‐(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) for the large‐scale production of essential chemicals has been largely limited by the formation of solid humin as a by‐product, which prevents continuous operation of step‐wise batch‐type processes and continuous flow‐type processes. The reaction of HMF with 1,3‐propanediol produces an HMF‐acetal derivative that exhibits excellent thermal stability. Aerobic oxidation of the HMF‐acetal with a CeO2‐supported Au catalyst and Na2CO3 in water gives a 90‐95% yield toward furan 2,5‐dicarboxylic acid, an increasingly important commodity chemical for the biorenewables industry, from concentrated HMF‐acetal solutions (10‐20 wt%) without humin formation. The stability of the six‐membered acetal ring suppresses thermal decomposition and self‐polymerization of HMF in concentrated solutions. Kinetic studies supported by density functional theory calculations identify two crucial steps in the reaction mechanism, i.e., the partial hydrolysis of the acetal into 5‐formyl‐2‐furan carboxylic acid involving OH‐ and Lewis acid sites on CeO2, and subsequent oxidative dehydrogenation of the in situ generated hemiacetal involving Au nanoparticles. The present results represent a significant advance over the current state of the art, overcoming an inherent limitation of the oxidation of HMF to an important monomer for biopolymer production.

Abstract:The utilization of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) for the large-scale production of essential chemicals has been largely limited by the formation of solid humin as a byproduct, which prevents the operation of stepwise batch-type and continuous flow-type processes. The reaction of HMF with 1,3-propanediol produces an HMF acetal derivative that exhibits excellent thermal stability. Aerobic oxidation of the HMF acetal with a CeO2-supported Au catalyst and Na2CO3 in water gives a 90-95% yield of furan 2,5-dicarboxylic acid, an increasingly important commodity chemical for the biorenewables industry, from concentrated solutions (10-20 wt%) without humin formation. The six-membered acetal ring suppresses thermal decomposition and self-polymerization of HMF in concentrated solutions. Kinetic studies supported by DFT calculations identify two crucial steps in the reaction mechanism, that is, the partial hydrolysis of the acetal into 5-formyl-2-furan carboxylic acid involving OH- and Lewis acid sites on CeO2, and subsequent oxidative dehydrogenation of the in situ generated hemiacetal involving Au nanoparticles. These results represent a significant advance over the current state of the art, overcoming an inherent limitation of the oxidation of HMF to an important monomer for biopolymer production.

Abstract:In this work, biomass-derived furfural has been selectively oxidized to 2(5H)-furanone using aqueous hydrogen peroxide as the green oxidant. Among various homogeneous acid catalysts screened for the transformation, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) was found to be the most suitable candidate that afforded up to 52% isolated yield of 2(5H)-furanone under mild conditions (RT, 1 h). In addition, succinic acid was recovered in nearly 20% yield from the aqueous layer. The organic solvent-free, gram-scale reaction was optimized on temperature, the molar ratio of H2O2 and furfural, and the amount of TFA used.

Abstract:A one-pot method for the selective production of high-grade diesel-range alkanes from biomass-derived furfural and 2-methylfuran (2-MF) was developed by combining the hydroxyalkylation/alkylation (HAA) condensation of furfural with 2-MF and the subsequent hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) over a multifunctional Pd/NbOPO4 catalyst. The effects of various reaction conditions as well as a variety of solid-acid catalysts and metal-loaded NbOPO4 catalysts were systematically investigated to optimize the reaction conditions for both reactions. Under the optimal reaction conditions up to 89.1 % total yield of diesel-range alkanes was obtained from furfural and 2-MF by this one-pot method.
