Abstract:K-ion battery (KIB) is a new-type energy storage device that possesses potential advantages of low-cost and abundant resource of potassium. To develop advanced electrode materials for accommodating the large size and high activity of potassium ion is of great interests. Herein, a segment-like antimony (Sb) nanorod encapsulated in hollow carbon tube electrode material (Sb@HCT) was prepared. Beneficial from the virtue of abundant nitrogen doping in carbon tube, one-dimensional and hollow structure advantages, Sb@HCT exhibits excellent potassium storage properties: in the case of potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) electrolyte, Sb@HCT displays a reversible capacity of up to 453.4 mAh·g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A·g−1 and good rate performance (a capacity of 211.5 mAh·g−1 could be achieved at an ultrahigh rate of 5 A·g−1). Additionally, Sb@HCT demonstrates excellent long-cycle stability at a current density of 2 A·g−1 over 120 cycles. Meanwhile, electrolyte optimization is an effective strategy for greatly improving electrochemical performance. Through ex-situ characterizations, we disclosed the potassiation of Sb anode is quite reversible and undergoes multistep processes, combining solid solution reaction and two-phase reaction.

Abstract:Free-standing nitrogen-doped cup-stacked carbon nanotube (NCSCNT) mats were synthesized and tested as anodes for potassium-ion batteries (KIBs). The edge-open structure character of the NCSCNTs allows a facile insertion of K+ ions into the carbon nanotubes. Combined with the nanosized feature and interconnected flexible structure, the NCSCNTs demonstrate impressive electrochemical performance with a reversible capacity of 323 mA h/g and a markedly improved rate capability retaining 75 mA h/g even at 1000 mA/g. Additionally, the free-standing NCSCNT mat electrodes eliminate conductive agents during the battery assembly and thereby significantly the utilization enhance the of nonactive components of binders and total specific capacity of the electrodes.
Nitrogen-Rich Hard Carbon As A Highly Durable Anode for High-Power Potassium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Carbonaceous electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are attractive due to the abundant resource of potassium and their rational capability. However, their rate capability and cycle life are mainly hindered by the intercalation chemistry involving repeated potassium insertion/extraction that are difficult to maintain within a short time or long-term cycling. Here, for the first time, a seafood waste (chitin)-derived hierarchically porous nitrogen-doped carbon microsphere (NCS) electrode with a surface-driven potassium storage mechanism is developed. The NCS electrode demonstrates a record high rate capability of 154mAhg−1 at 72C and ultralong cycle life of 4000 cycles without obvious capacity decay (180mAhg−1 at 1.8C), representing the best rate capability and longest cycle life among all electrodes in KIBs and even supassing most electrodes in sodium-ion batteries (NIBs). Further kinetic analysis and first-principle calculations reveal the dominated capacitive surface-driven mechanism of potassium storage in NCS, which is attributed to the hierarchically porous microstructure and nitrogen-doped carbon structure with enhanced potassium adsorption capability and electronic/ionic conductivities.
Nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanoparticles with optimized multiscale nanostructures via dolomite-assisted chemical vapor deposition for high-performance potassium-ion capacitor

Abstract:Carbon-based materials are considered as promising anode candidates for potassium-ion storage with the key bottlenecks lying in the slow kinetics and huge volume expansion caused by the large size of K + . Herein, nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanoparticles (NHCP) with optimized multiscale nanostructures are synthesized by a natural template-assisted chemical vapor deposition process. Benefiting from the stacking nanoparticles structure with hierarchical pores, high level of pyridinic-/pyrrolic-N, and enlarged interlayer spacing, the constructed NHCP anode delivers superior K + storage properties in terms of high reversible capacity (412.7 mAh g −1 at 0.03 A g −1 ), favorable rate capability, and long cyclic stability. The detailed experimental and computational studies reveal the combined storage mechanism of K + adsorption and insertion in the multiscale nanostructure of NHCP. To achieve high areal capacities, self-supported NHCP electrodes with high mass loadings (3.41 and 6.23 mg cm −2 ) were constructed by a vacuum-assisted infiltration process which exhibits greatly improved areal capacities as compared with the traditional slurry coating electrode. The assembled full-carbon potassium-ion capacitor based on NHCP anode exhibits high energy and power densities (168 Wh kg −1 and 9.4 kW kg −1 ) and a long cycling lifespan (83.9% capacity retention after 10000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 ). This work provides a facile fabrication method for porous carbon electrodes with high mass loadings and capacities, which holds the potential for practical application.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials are one of the ideal negative electrode materials for potassium ion batteries. However, the limited active sites and sluggish diffusion ion kinetics still hinder its commercialization process. To address these problems, we design a novel carbon composite anode, by confining highly reactive short-chain sulfur molecules into nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanospheres (termed SHC-450). The formation process involves the controlled synthesis of hollow polyaniline (PANI) nanospheres as precursors via an Ostwald ripening mechanism and subsequent sulfuration treatment. The high content of constrained short-chain sulfur molecules (20.94 wt%) and considerable N (7.15 wt%) ensure sufficient active sites for K+ storage in SHC-450. Accordingly, the SHC-450 electrode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 472.05 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and good rate capability (172 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1). Thermogravimetric analysis shows that SHC-450 has impressive thermal stability to withstand a high temperature of up to 640 °C. Ex situ spectroscopic characterizations reveal that the short-chain sulfur provides high capacity through reversible formation of K2S. Moreover, its special hollow structure not only provides ample space for highly active short-chain sulfur reactants but also effectively mitigates volume expansion during the sulfur conversion process. This work offers new perspectives on enhanced K+ storage performance from an interesting anode design and the space-limited domain principle.

Abstract:Unique features of defective carbon surface, hollow tubular channel, and enlarged interlayer space in N, S co‐doped carbon nanotubes are achieved by the strategic engineering of surface and structure. Based on density functional theory calculations, N, S co‐doping contributes to superior capacity as anode materials in a K‐ion battery by enhancing the K‐ion adsorption. Exploration of advanced carbon anode material is the key to circumventing the sluggish kinetics and poor rate capability for potassium ion storage. Herein, a synergistic synthetic strategy of engineering both surface and structure is adopted to design N, S co‐doped carbon nanotubes (NS‐CNTs). The as‐designed NS‐CNTs exhibit unique features of defective carbon surface, hollow tubular channel, and enlarged interlayer space. These features significantly contribute to a large potassium storage capacity of 307 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 and a remarkable rate performance with a capacity of 151 mA h g−1 even at 5 A g−1. Furthermore, an excellent cyclability with 98% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 2 A g−1 is also achieved. Systematic analysis by in situ Raman spectroscopy and ex situ TEM demonstrates the structural stability and reversibility in the charge–discharge process. Although the kinetics studies reveal the capacitive‐dominated process for potassium storage, density functional theory calculations provide evidence that N, S co‐doping contributes to expanding the interlayer space to promote the K‐ion insertion, improving the electronic conductivity, and providing ample defective sites to favor the K‐ion adsorption.

Abstract:As a promising energy storage system, potassium (K) ion batteries (KIBs) have received extensive attention due to the abundance of potassium resource in the Earth’s crust and the similar properties of K to Li. However, the electrode always presents poor stability for K-ion storage due to the large radius of K-ions. In our work, we develop a nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber (N-CNF) derived from bacterial cellulose by a simple pyrolysis process, which allows ultra-stable K-ion storage. Even at a large current density of 1 A g−1, our electrode exhibits a reversible specific capacity of 81 mAh g−1 after 3000 cycles for KIBs, with a capacity retention ratio of 71%. To investigate the electrochemical enhancement performance of our N-CNF, we provide the calculation results according to density functional theory, demonstrating that nitrogen doping in carbon is in favor of the K-ion adsorption during the potassiation process. This behavior will contribute to the enhancement of electrochemical performance for KIBs. In addition, our electrode exhibits a low voltage plateau during the potassiation–depotassiation process. To further evaluate this performance, we calculate the “relative energy density” for comparison. The results illustrate that our electrode presents a high “relative energy density”, indicating that our N-CNF is a promising anode material for KIBs.

Abstract:Hollow carbon materials are promising candidates when evaluated as anode for potassium ion batteries (PIBs) due to high capacity, available pore structure, excellent surface properties and unique structural for buffering the destructive volume expansion. However, the unsatisfactory electrical conductivity and structural stability caused by amorphous carbon structure hinder its further practical application of accommodating potassium ions. Herein, nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanospheres (NHCSs) are synthesized by using acetone discriminatively dissolving the interior part of 3-aminophenol-formaldehyde resin nanospheres and then interconnected with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to prepare the CNTs-NHCSs composite as advanced anode for PIBs. Owing to the long-range order graphitized structure introduced by CNTs and unique cavity structure provided by NHCSs, the integrity of the connection between NHCSs and CNTs can be confirmed to boost electron transport and buffer volume changing synergistically. Accordingly, the CNTs-NHCSs electrode delivers high reversible capacity of 228 and 165.2 mAh g−1 over 100 cycles at 100 mA g−1 and 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g−1 respectively, indicating superior reversible potassium storage capacity and excellent rate capability. The successful construction of advanced CNTs-NHCSs composite in this work provides a new avenue in structural design and function optimization for the development of PIBs electrode materials.

Abstract:Potassium‐based energy storage devices (PESDs) are promising candidates for large‐scale energy storage applications owing to potassiums abundant in nature, the low standard redox potential (−2.93 V for K/K+ vs the standard hydrogen electrode) of potassium (K), and high ionic conductivity of K‐ion based electrolytes. However, lack of proper cathode and anode materials hinder practical applications of PESDs. In this work, carbon nanosheets doped with an ultrahigh content of nitrogen (22.7 at%) are successfully synthesized as an anode material for a K‐ion battery, which delivers a high capacity of 410 mAh g−1 at a current density of 500 mA g−1, which is the best result among the carbon based anodes for PESDs. Moreover, the battery exhibits an excellent cycling performance with a capacity retention of 70% after 3000 cycles at a high current density of 5 A g−1. In situ Raman, galvanostatic intermittent titration, and density functional theory calculations reveal that the ultrahigh N‐doped carbon nanosheet (UNCN) simultaneously combines the diffusion and pseudocapacitive mechanisms together, which remarkably improves its electrochemical performances in K‐ion storage. These results demonstrate the good potential of UNCNs as a high‐performance anode for PESDs.

Abstract:As one of the most promising electrochemical energy-storage devices after lithium-ion batteries, potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have been restricted by the limited capacity of carbon-based anodes. Herein, we design and prepare three-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon spheres anchored with cobalt nanoparticles (CoNC) via self-sacrifice template method. The CoNC spheres exhibit a uniform spherical morphology with an inner hierarchical structure. The final calcination temperature is changed to obtain CoNC-700, CoNC-800, and CoNC-900, in which CoNC-700 is verified to combine amorphous cobalt nanoparticles with graphitic carbon spheres successfully and presents excellent rate capability and good potassium-storage performance. Nitrogen-doping and amorphous cobalt nanoparticle-loading can effectively introduce rich defects to the CoNC electrode, enhance electrical conductivity, and accelerate potassium-storage kinetics, which leadto a reversible specific capacity of 382 mA h g–1 at a current density of 0.5 A g–1 and 330 mA h g–1 at a current density of 1 A g–1 after 1000 cycles, suggesting the potential of the high-capacity, ultrastable anode for potassium-ion batteries.

Abstract:The carbon materials as anode electrodes have been widely studied for potassium ion batteries (PIBs). However, the large size of potassium ions prevents their intercalation/deintercalation, resulting in poor storage behaviors. Herein, a novel design of N/S codoped hierarchical carbonaceous fibers (NSHCF) formed from nanosheets self-assembled by catalyzing Aspergillus niger with Sn is reported. The as-prepared NSHCF at 600 °C (NSHCF-600) exhibits a high reversible capacity of 345.4 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 after 100 cycles and an excellent rate performance of 124.5 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1. The excellent potassium storage performance can be ascribed to the N/S dual-doping, which enlarges interlayer spacing (0.404 nm) and introduces more defects. The larger interlayer spacing and higher pyridinic N active sites can promote K ions diffusion and storage. In addition, the ex situ transmission electron microscopy reveals the high reversibility of potassiation/depotassiation process and structural stability.

Abstract:Heteroatom-rich carbon materials deliver superior potassium storage capacity owing to the abundant active sites, but their stability and conductivity are damaged because of the numerous defects and distortion of π-conjugated system. In this work, we amended the adverse influences of heteroatoms on carbon materials through the B, N stabilization effect. Due to an amending effect of B atoms on the N-doped carbon matrix, the integrity of the carbon skeleton and stability of the system are significantly enhanced, and the undesirable defects are transformed into favorable active sites, resulting in the simultaneous improvement of K+ storage capacity, rate performance and cyclic stability. The stabilized materials have a highly reversible carbon structure and fast K+ transfer kinetics, leading to high reversible capacity (300 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1), good rate performance (107.2 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1) and superior cyclic stability (75.3 % capacity retention from cycle 11 to 2000 at 1 A g-1). Consequently, the constructed devices perform excellent energy densities of 158.8 and 40.7 Wh kg-1 under power densities of 100 and 11250 W kg-1, respectively. This work proposes an effective strategy for significantly improving heteroatom-rich carbon materials, which broadens its application fields in high-performance potassium ion storage.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped carbon-based nanosized materials are considered as potential anode candidates in the field of potassium-ion batteries, in which the ease of modulations on their doped heteroatoms, morphologies, and pore structures demonstrates great potentials to enhance potassium storage. However, systematic investigation and analysis of the effects of the doped heteroatoms, morphologies, and pore structures are still absent. Herein, a series of hierarchical nitrogen-doped microporous carbon nanorod-assembed superstructures with secondary heteroatoms (P, S, and B) are presented as platforms to investigate the impact of promotion effects of secondary heteroatoms on their potassium storage behaviors. Remarkably, the P,N-codoped carbon superstructure (P-NCS) exhibited optimal performance with a high specific capacity (332 mAh g–1) and an extremely stable battery life up to 500 cycles. The high potassium ion adsorption ability could be ascribed to the significant anchoring function of dual P,N codoping and micropore capturing. Moreover, the design of the hierarchical carbon nanorod-assembed superstructure provides abundant interfaces between the electrode and electrolyte with greatly shortened potassium diffusion lengths, thus leading to high rate capabilities. This work provides experimental basis and theoretical guidance for designing high-performance carbon-based potassium storage materials through heteroatom doping.

Abstract:Nitrogen and oxygen dual-doped amorphous carbon network (NOCN) facilely prepared via self-assembly method in this study as potassium ion battery' anode for ultra-long and superior-rate capability. The as-synthesized NOCN exhibits an excellent reversible capacity of 464.9 mAh g(-1) at 0.05 A g(-1), outstanding performance of 175 mAh g(-1) at a high current density of 5.0 A g(-1), and ultra-long cycling performance with capacity decay less than 0.008% per cycle. The superior performance can be attributed to the unique ultra-stable network structure together with N and O co-doped. Supported by detailed fundamental analysis, the higher K-ion storage process in NOCN is contributed by the pseudocapacitive mechanism. The simple synthesis route as well as the hopeful electro-chemical property shed a new insight into the quest for carbon-based K-storage anode materials with high energy and long-cycling life.
Dual-Functional Template-Induced In Situ Polymerization Process Enables the Hierarchical Carbonaceous Nanotubes with Simultaneous Sn Cluster Incorporation and Nitrogen-Doping for Superior Potassium-Ion Storage

Abstract:Potassium ion-based energy storage devices have received extensive attention for grid-level applications due to their abundant natural resources and low cost. However, the large ionic radius of K+ leads to inferior capacities and cyclic stability, which hinders their practical application. Herein, hierarchical carbonaceous nanotubes with simultaneous ultrasmall Sn cluster incorporation and nitrogen doping (denoted as ) are fabricated using MnO2 nanowires as a dual-functional template (in situ polymerization and shape-directing agents) and subsequent carbonization treatment. The exhibit a superior K+ storage capability with a high reversible capacity (220.1 mA h g–1 at 0.1 A g–1) and long cycling stability (149.9 mA h g–1 at 1 A g–1 after 4000 cycles). Besides, the exhibit superior cycling stability up to 10000 cycles at 5 A g–1 for Na+ storage. The potassium storage mechanism and kinetics are investigated based on ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in situ Raman spectrum, and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique. More importantly, can be used as the anode for potassium ion hybrid capacitors, achieving a superior energy density of 181.4 W h kg–1 at a power density of 185 W kg–1 with excellent cycling capability. Preferentially Engineering Edge–Nitrogen Sites in Porous Hollow Spheres for Ultra–Fast and Reversible Potassium Storage

Abstract:Hard carbons have been regarded as potential anode materials for potassium ion batteries due to their superior merits of low cost, good chemical stability, and adjustable structure. However, hard carbons still suffer from the sluggish kinetics and large volume expansion during potassiation/depotassiation processes. Edge-nitrogen doping has been demonstrated an effective strategy to solve these issues. Currently, the low portion of edge -nitrogen sites restricts K+ adsorption ability of hard carbons. Herein, we preferentially engineer edge-nitrogen sites with a high portion of 85.6% in hollow porous carbon spheres, through structure engineering combined with dual doping. The as-developed anode materials possess unique interior void space and various nanoscale curvature, preferentially exposing rich edge-nitrogen sites. Additional phosphorus doping modulates valence bands of edge-nitrogen sites, advantageous for generating a large fraction of edge sites. The edge dominated nitrogen species confer strong K+ adsorption capability, thus contributing a rapid surface-controlled potassium adsorption process. Consequently, the as-prepared hollow porous N,P-codoped carbon spheres exhibit comparable reversible capacities, outstanding rate performance (193.0 mAh g-1 at 4 A g-1), and stable cycling ability (137.6 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 after 1500 cycles). Ex operando Raman, XRD and DFT calculations reveal the stable structure, reinforced K+ adsorption ability and modulated band structure. Abstract:Abstract A new type of anode material in which small‐sized CoP nanoparticles coated with N‐doped carbon are immobilized into 1D nitrogen‐doped carbon frameworks (CoP@NC⊂NCFs) is accurately synthesized via self‐template catalysis. The hierarchical structure bears various structural advantages, including more active sites and ultrahigh electrical conductivity provided by enriched nitrogen, strong interface interaction between CoP and N‐doped carbon, and the stability of the structure. As a result, the rapid potassium ion reaction kinetics and the strong adsorption of potassium ions of CoP are realized, verified by galvanostatic intermittent titration and density function theory calculations. In addition, through the advanced in situ characterization techniques, the solid‐solution reaction mechanism of CoP and potassium ions is clarified. The zero‐strain structure of CoP further ensures structural robustness, giving CoP@NC⊂NCFs excellent potassium storage properties, especially cycle stability with a capacity of ≈206 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 for 1200 cycles, achieving an ultralow decay rate of 0.01%. The corresponding K‐ion full cell is also prepared, as expected, and shows stable capacity retention.

Abstract:The investigation of carbonaceous-based anode materials will promote the fast application of low-cost potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Here a nitrogen and oxygen co-doped yolk-shell carbon sphere (NO-YS-CS) is constructed as anode material for K-ion storage. The novel architecture, featuring with developed porous structure and high surface specific area, is beneficial to achieving excellent electrochemical kinetics behavior and great electrode stability from buffering the large volume expansion. Furthermore, the N/O heteroatoms co-doping can not only boost the adsorption and intercalation ability of K-ion but also increase the electron transfer capability. It is also demonstrated by experimental results and DFT calculations that K-ion insertion/extraction proceeds through both intercalation and surface capacitive adsorption mechanisms. As expected, the NO-YS-CS electrodes show high initial charge capacity of 473.7 mAh g-1 at 20 mA g-1 , ultralong cycling life over 2500 cycles with the retention of 85.8% at 500 mA g-1 , and superior rate performance (183.3 mAh g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 ). The K-ion full cell, with a high energy density of 271.4 Wh kg-1 and an excellent cyclic stability over 500 cycles, is successfully fabricated with K2 Fe[Fe(CN)6 ] cathode. This work will provide new insight on the synthesis and mechanism understanding of high-performance hard carbon anode for PIBs.

Abstract:Abstract Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are attractive for grid-scale energy storage due to the abundant potassium resource and high energy density. The key to achieving high-performance and large-scale energy storage technology lies in seeking eco-efficient synthetic processes to the design of suitable anode materials. Herein, a spherical sponge-like carbon superstructure (NCS) assembled by 2D nanosheets is rationally and efficiently designed for K + storage. The optimized NCS electrode exhibits an outstanding rate capability, high reversible specific capacity (250 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 after 300 cycles), and promising cycling performance (205 mAh g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 after 2000 cycles). The superior performance can be attributed to the unique robust spherical structure and 3D electrical transfer network together with nitrogen-rich nanosheets. Moreover, the regulation of the nitrogen doping types and morphology of NCS-5 is also discussed in detail based on the experiments results and density functional theory calculations. This strategy for manipulating the structure and properties of 3D materials is expected to meet the grand challenges for advanced carbon materials as high-performance PIB anodes in practical applications.
