Abstract:Two scandium coordination polymers, a 2D supermolecule structure {[Sc(OH)(L-1)(2)(H2O)]}(n) (1) (HL1 = isonicotinic acid), a 1D infinite chain structure {[Sc-3(L-2)(4)(H2O)(4)]NO3H2O}(n) (2) (H2L2 = 4,5-imidazole dicarboxylic acid), as well as a scandium complex {[Sc-2(OH)(2)(L-3)(2)(H2O)(4)]}(n) (3) (H2L3 = 1,2,3-triazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid), were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Compounds 1-3 are active heterogeneous catalysts for high-yield cyanosilylation of aromatic aldehydes in acetonitrile, particularly for p-nitrobenzaldehyde. Moreover, these three catalysts can be reused three times without significant loss in activity or mass.

Abstract:Sc-CP 1, 1A, 1B and 1C with controllable morphologies were successfully synthesized by the conventional hydrothermal method and microwave (MW) assisted hydrothermal method. 1 was macroscopic, 1A was nano sized, while 1B and 1C were micron sized. Sc-CP 1 showed two-dimensional (2D) layered structure which was constructed from the connections of left- and right-hand helical chains. Catalytic experiments showed the catalytic performances of Sc-CP 1, 1A, 1B and 1C for the cyanosilylation reaction of aromatic aldehydes were dependent on the morphologies of the particles. Flower-ball-like 1C featuring a high concentration of Lewis acidic Sc(III) sites on its exposed external surfaces showed better catalytic activity than others, the best constant rate of which was 6.4 x 10(-3) min(-1).

Abstract:Two new copper complexes [Cu-4(I)(L2)I-5](n) (1, L2 = 3,5-bis(1-ethylpyridinium-4-yl)-1,2,4-triazol-4-ide) and [Cu-6(I)(L3)(3)Br-3](n) (2, L3 = 3,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazolate) were obtained from the solvothermal reactions of different copper halides with 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (L1) in the presence of aqueous ammonia. The X-ray diffraction, IR spectrum and elemental analyses of 1 and 2 clearly show that the 1,3,4-oxadiazole ligand L1 has transformed into the triazolate ligands L2 and L3. Most fascinatingly, 1 represents the first example of an integrated reaction system involving heterocyclic conversion from oxadiazole to triazolate, N-alkylation, and further self-assembly of the in situ generated ligand L2 with metal cations to form a coordination polymer in one solvothermal spot. The possible formation mechanism of 1 is proposed, and in addition, the interesting topologies and luminescence properties of 2 are studied based on the results of the DFT calculations.

Abstract:Two new coordination polymers (CPs) namely, [Cd2(btc)(bmi)2·4H2O·DMF] (1) and [Zn2(L)(bmi)·5H2O] (2) have been synthesized utilizing mixed ligand strategy by reacting Cd(II) salt with benzene-tetracarboxylic acid (H4btc) and 1,5-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)pentane (bmi) and Zn(II) salt with 5-[bis(4-carboxybenzyl)-amino]isophthalic acid (H4L) and 1,5-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)pentane (bmi). The single crystal X-ray diffraction indicated that 1 has 2D network with (4,4) topology based on [Cd2(COO)4] secondary building units (SBUs), while 2 displays an undulating 2D (4, 4)-network by μ4-(L)4- ligands, which can be further interlinked into 3D supramolecular layer through hydrogen bonding interactions. Both of them have been tested as possible photocatalysts for the photodegradation of a model organic dye methyl violet (MV). The photocatalytic studies indicate that 1 and 2 show potential photocatalyts for degradation of MV. Furthermore, the possible photocatalytic mechanisms have been explained on the basis of density of states plots.

Abstract:The catalytic activity of scandium has not been widely studied. This article reports the first study of a new kind of Ziegler-Natta catalyst, the combination of a scandium compound and aluminum trialkyl, for the polymerization of acetylene. Some characteristics and kinetic aspects of acetylene polymerization by scandium catalysts and the results of the characterization of polyacetylene so obtained are described. High cis polyacetylene films (95% cis) with silvery metallic sheen and high crystallinity (70%) were obtained at ambient temperature (30–0 °C). The electrical conductivity of iodine doped polyacetylene reached hundreds ohm−1 cm−1.

Abstract:The generally accepted coordination–insertion mechanisms of scandium-alkoxide initiated ring-opening polymerizations of ɛ-caprolactone (CL), trimethylene carbonate (TMC) and (S,S)-lactide (LLA) were investigated using density functional theory calculations. The geometries and corresponding energies of four key proposed intermediates were evaluated and found consistent with these structures. The transition states corresponding to monomer addition indicate a penta-coordinate scandium and have nearly the same energies for all monomers. Thus CL, TMC and LLA undergo similar processes with relatively small differences in the energies of Sc-monomer coordination but the pre-transition state complex of TMC is much lower in energy than that of the other monomers. The dipole moments of the intermediates close to the transition states and the transition states themselves in all cases are lower than those of the reactants predicting faster reaction rates in low polarity solvents, consistent with experimental results. This study may be applicable to ring-opening polymerizations mediated by yttrium and other rare earth complexes.
Scandium, titanium and vanadium complexes supported by PCP-type pincer ligands: synthesis, structure, and styrene polymerization activity

Abstract:A series of first-row early transition metal dialkyl complexes bearing pincer ligands [(POCOP)M(CH2SiMe3)2] (POCOP: (2,6-(tBu2PO)2-C6H3); 1-Sc: M = Sc; 1-Ti: M = Ti; 1-V: M = V) and [(PCP)M(CH2SiMe3)2] (PCP: (2,6-(tBu2PCH2)2-C6H3); 2-Sc: M = Sc; 2-Ti: M = Ti) have been synthesized. These dialkyl complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy, and solution magnetic susceptibility (Evans method) analyses appropriately. All the complexes exhibited square pyramidal geometries with different extents of distortion. The activities of these complexes were further explored in styrene polymerization, in which combinations of scandium complexes (1-Sc or 2-Sc) with [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] were found to be active catalytic systems for highly syndiospecific (>99% rrrr) polymerization of styrene. Meanwhile, the Ti(III) complexes 1-Ti and 2-Ti showed rather low activity in styrene polymerization, which stands in sharp contrast to those in previous reports involving Ti(III) catalysts bearing cyclopentadienyl derivative ligands.

Abstract:Three 2D coordination polymers, [Cu2(μ4-dpa)(bipy)2(H2O)]n∙6nH2O (1), [Mn2(μ6-dpa)(bipy)2]n (2), and [Zn2(μ4-dpa)(bipy)2(H2O)2]n·2nH2O (3), were prepared by a hydrothermal method using metal(II) chloride salts, 3-(2′,4′-dicarboxylphenoxy)phthalic acid (H4dpa) as a linker, as well as 2,2′-bipyridine (bipy) as a crystallization mediator. Compounds 1–3 were obtained as crystalline solids and fully characterized. The structures of 1–3 were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing 2D metal-organic networks of sql, 3,6L66, and hcb topological types. Thermal stability and catalytic behavior of 1–3 were also studied. In particular, zinc(II) coordination polymer 3 functions as a highly active and recoverable heterogeneous catalyst in the mild cyanosilylation of benzaldehydes with trimethylsilyl cyanide to give cyanohydrin derivatives. The influence of various parameters was investigated, including a time of reaction, a loading of catalyst and its recycling, an effect of solvent type, and a substrate scope. As a result, up to 93% product yields were attained in a catalyst recoverable and reusable system when exploring 4-nitrobenzaldehyde as a model substrate. This study contributes to widening the types of multifunctional polycarboxylic acid linkers for the design of novel coordination polymers with notable applications in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The one-pot salt-metathesis reaction of ScCl3, cyclopentadienyl lithium salts, and allylmagnesium chlorides afforded with ease the corresponding base-free half-sandwich scandium di-(eta(3)-allyl) complexes [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc- (C3H5)(2)] (1a), [(C5Me5)Sc(C3H5)(2)] (1b), and [(C5Me5)Sc(2-MeC3H4)(2)] (1c) in high yields. Reaction of 1a with 1 equivalent of [PhNMe2H][B(C6F5)(4)] in toluene gave rapidly the N,N-dimethylaniline-coordinated cationic mono-(eta(3)-allyl) complex [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc-(eta(3)-C3H5)(eta(6)-PhNMe2)][B(C6F5)(4)] (2). The similar reaction of 1a with [Ph3C][B-(C6F5)(4)] yielded the analogous toluene-separated ion pair [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc(eta(3)-C3H5)(eta(6)-PhMe)][B(C6F5)(4)] (3). When [PhNMe2H][BPh4] was treated with 1a, the contact ion pair [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc- (eta(3)-C3H5)( mu, eta(6)-Ph)BPh3] (4) was obtained. Recrystallization of 2, 3, and 4 in THF yielded the corresponding thf-separated ion pair complexes [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc(eta(3)-C3H5)(thf)(2)][B-(C6F5)(4)] (5) and [(C5Me4SiMe3)SC(eta(3)- C3H5)(thf)(2)][BPh4] (6). The N,N-dimethylaniline-coordinated cationic scandium allyl complex 2 and the toluene-coordinated analogue 3 showed high activity (activity: 3 > 2) toward the polymerization and copolymerization of isoprene and norbornene to afford random copolymers with a broad range of isoprene content (33-86 mol %). The tight ion pair 4 and the thf-coordinated complexes 5 and 6 showed no activity under the same conditions. These results offer unprecedented insight into the structure-activity relationship of a cationic metal polymerization-catalyst system.

Abstract:A scandium dication active species [(IPr)Sc(μ-CH2SiMe3)(μ-CH2CHMe2)Al i Bu2]2+[B(C6F5)4]2 – (IPr = (2,6-C6H3 i Pr2NCH)2C) in situ generated from the reaction of an N-heterocyclic carbene-ligated scandium trialkyl complex (IPr)Sc(CH2SiMe3)3 (2) with 1–3 equiv of cocatalyst [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] and an excess of Al i Bu3 exhibits unprecedentedly high activity (up to 2.2 × 106 g·molSc –1·h–1) and syndiotactic selectivity (rrrr > 99%) in the polymerization of o-methoxystyrene (oMOS) and its silyloxy- or fluorine-substituted derivatives, affording syndiotactic poly(oMOS)s and their silyloxy or fluorine-substituted derivatives with ultrahigh molecular weight (M n up to 4.6 × 106) and moderate molecular weight distributions (M w/M n = 1.37–2.21) unavailable by the traditional catalysts. Based on in situ NMR spectroscopy, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, a plausible coordination polymerization mechanism has been proposed for the syndiotactic polymerization of oMOS by such a Sc dication active species.

Abstract:Two novel coordination polymers, formulated as {[Zn(HTPO)(bib)]·4H2O}n (1), {[Cu3(TPO)2 (bib)3]·2DMF·0.5EtOH·0.5H2O}n (2) (H3TPO = tris(4-carboxylphenyl)phosphine oxide; bib = 1,4-bis(1H-imidazol-4-yl) benzene), have been synthesized under solvothermal method and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis (EA), IR spectra, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Structural analysis reveals that complex 1 is a 2D 4-connected sheet with an intriguing 2D + 2D→2D network. Complex 2 displays a 3D 3,4-connected net with the point symbol of {103}2{106}3. Furthermore, the photoluminescence properties of 1 and 2 were investigated in the solid state and various solvent emulsions, the results show that 1 and 2 have better fluorescent recognition for organic molecules, Fe3+ and Hg2+ ions.
1-Hexene Homopolymerization and Copolymerization with Polar Ω-Halo-α-alkenes by (Benz)imidazolin-2-iminato Scandium and Yttrium Complexes

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of benz imidazolin-2-iminato scandium and yttrium complexes (Sc1-Sc3, Y1, and Y2) are reported herein. All of the complexes were isolated in high yields, and from single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, extremely short N-Mt bonds were revealed, indicating the highly nucleophilic nature of the ligands. In the presence of [Ph3C][B(C6F5)(4)] and Al(i-Bu)(3), scandium complexes showed medium to high activities for 1-hexene polymerization, revealing the trend Sc1 > Sc3 > Sc2. More importantly, the scandium complex Sc1 was active in the copolymerization of 1-hexene with polar omega-cohalo-alpha-alkenes, demonstrating the good heteroatom tolerance of the cationic lanthanide metals that is caused by the strong electrondonating ability of these ligands. The influence of different types of comonomers on the polymerization behaviors and the microstructure of the resultant copolymer products were investigated in detail.

Abstract:Three scandium metal-organic frameworks (Sc-MOFs), [Sc(pydc)(Hpydc)(H2O)]·H2O (1), [Sc2(pydc)3(H2O)4]·5H2O (2) and [Sc(pydc)(H2O)(NO3)] (3) with similar Sc2(pydc)2 building unit were prepared by using 2,3-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (H2pydc) ligand under hydrothermal conditions. Compound 1 exhibits a ladder-shaped chain with Sc2(pydc)2 units, which further construct a supramolecular characteristic with water molecules via hydrogen bond. Compound 2 features a waved layer made up of pydc(2-) ligands and two types of crystallographically different Sc(III) ions, among which Sc2 and pydc(2-) ligands constructed the Sc2(pydc)2 units. In compound 3, left and right helixes were alternately linked by the Sc2(pydc)2 units forming a hexagonal network with nbo-a topology. All the prepared compounds present effective heterogeneous Lewis acid catalytic functionality for the cyanosilylation of aldehyde.

Abstract:Amine elimination reactions of the scandium tris(amide) complexes Sc[N(SiRMe2)3](THF)n (R = H, n = 1; R = Me, n = 0) with 1 equiv of the substituted cyclopentadienes C5Me4R′H (R′ = Me, SiMe3) afforded the series of thermally stable half-sandwich scandium bis(amide) complexes (C5Me5)Sc[N(SiHMe2)2]2 (1), (C5Me4SiMe3)Sc[N(SiHMe2)2]2 (2), and (C5Me5)Sc[N(SiMe3)2]2 (3). In the presence of AliBu3, activated by an equimolar amount of [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4], all these complexes showed high activity toward styrene polymerization to give high-molecular-weight polystyrene (Mn > 104) with high syndiotacticity (rrrr >99%).
Two triazole-based coordination polymers: Synthesis and crystal structure characterization

Abstract:Abstract Here we reported two new triazole-based coordination polymers (CPs), i.e., [Zn(Hdatrz)( μ 2 -O)] n ( 1 ) together with [Mn(Hdatrz)(C 2 O 4 )] n · n (H 2 O) ( 2 ) (Hdatrz = 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole), which were generated under solvothermal conditions. The influence of different metal ions on the structure and properties of CPs was investigated. The CPs’ whole structures have been completely characterized by the powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. It is noteworthy that, upon excitation at 390 nm, ligands of compounds 1 and 2, as well as the metal complexes, all exhibit luminescence at 432 nm.

It is noteworthy that supramolecular architectures of two complexes are formed by π-π interactions. The photoluminescent properties of the ligands and complexes 1-2 in the solid-state were explored. In addition, the dye adsorption behavior of compound 1 was also studied and the adsorption kinetic data were well described by a pseudo-second-order model. The experimental results indicated that compound 1 is a promising adsorbent for Congo red (CR) dye removal from aqueous solution.
