Abstract:The aim of this article is to develop an explicit procedure that enables one to reconstruct any $C^1$ path (at natural parametrization) from its signature. We also explicitly quantify the distance between the reconstructed path and the original path in terms of the number of terms in the signature that are used for the construction and the modulus of continuity of the derivative of the path. A key ingredient in the construction is the use of a procedure of symmetrization that separates the behavior of the path at small and large scales.

Abstract:We develop two methods to reconstruct a path of bounded variation from its signature. The first method gives a simple and explicit expression of any axis path in terms of its signature, but it does not apply directlty to more general ones. The second method, based on an approximation scheme, recovers any tree-reduced path from its signature as the limit of a uniformly convergent sequence of lattice paths.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to provide a simple sampling procedure to reconstruct any monotone path from its signature. For every N, we sample a lattice path of N steps with weights given by the coefficient of the corresponding word in the signature. We show that these weights on lattice paths satisfy the large deviations principle. In particular, this implies that the probability of picking up a "wrong" path is exponentially small in N. The argument relies on a probabilistic interpretation of the signature for monotone paths.

Abstract:Kawakubo and Uchida showed that, if a closed oriented 4k-dimensional manifold M admits a semi-free circle action such that the dimension of the fixed point set is less than 2k, then the signature of M vanishes. In this note, by using G-signature theorem and the rigidity of the signature operator, we generalize this result to more general circle actions. Combining the same idea with the remarkable Witten-Taubes-Bott rigidity theorem, we explore more vanishing results on spin manifolds admitting such circle actions. Our results are closely related to some earlier results of Conner-Floyd, Landweber-Stong and Hirzebruch-Slodowy.

Abstract:In 1983, Hartle and Hawking introduced a conceptually intriguing idea involving signature-type change, which led to the no-boundary proposal for the initial conditions of the universe. According to this proposal, the universe has no beginning because there is no singularity or boundary in spacetime; however, there is an origin of time. Mathematically, this entails signature-type changing manifolds where a Riemannian region smoothly transitions to a Lorentzian region at the surface where time begins. We present a coherent framework for signature-type changing manifolds characterized by a degenerate yet smooth metric. We then adapt firmly established Lorentzian tools and results to the signature-type changing scenario, introducing new definitions that carry unforeseen causal implications. A noteworthy consequence is the presence of locally closed time-reversing loops through each point on the hypersurface. By imposing the constraint of global hyperbolicity on the Lorentzian region, we demonstrate that for every point $p\in M$, there exists a pseudo-timelike loop with point of self-intersection $p$. Or put another way, there always exists a closed pseudo-timelike path in $M$ around which the direction of time reverses, and a consistent designation of future-directed and past-directed vectors cannot be defined.

Abstract:Over the past decade, the importance of the 1D signature which can be seen as a functional defined along a path, has been pivotal in both path-wise stochastic calculus and the analysis of time series data. By considering an image as a two-parameter function that takes values in a $d$-dimensional space, we introduce an extension of the path signature to images. We address numerous challenges associated with this extension and demonstrate that the 2D signature satisfies a version of Chen's relation in addition to a shuffle-type product. Furthermore, we show that specific variations of the 2D signature can be recursively defined, thereby satisfying an integral-type equation. We analyze the properties of the proposed signature, such as continuity, invariance to stretching, translation and rotation of the underlying image. Additionally, we establish that the proposed 2D signature over an image satisfies a universal approximation property.

A PDE approach for solving the characteristic function of the generalised signature process

Abstract:The signature of a path, as a fundamental object in Rough path theory, serves as a generating function for non-commutative monomials on path space. It transforms the path into a grouplike element in the tensor algebra space, summarising the path faithfully up to a generalised form of re-parameterisation (a negligible equivalence class in this context). Our paper concerns stochastic processes and studies the characteristic function of the path signature of the stochastic process. In contrast to the expected signature, it determines the law on the random signatures without any regularity condition. The computation of the characteristic function of the random signature offers potential applications in stochastic analysis and machine learning, where the expected signature plays an important role. In this paper, we focus on a time-homogeneous Itô diffusion process, and adopt a PDE approach to derive the characteristic function of its signature defined at any fixed time horizon. A key ingredient of our approach is the introduction of the generalised-signature process. This lifting enables us to establish the Feynman-Kac-type theorem for the characteristic function of the generalised-signature process by following the martingale approach. Moreover, as an application of our results, we present a novel derivation of the joint characteristic function of Brownian motion coupled with the Lévy area, leveraging the structure theorem of anti-symmetric matrices.

The Surface Signature and Rough Surfaces

Abstract:Parallel transport, or path development, provides a rich characterization of paths which preserves the underlying algebraic structure of concatenation. The path signature is universal among such maps: any (translation-invariant) parallel transport factors uniquely through the path signature. Furthermore, the path signature is a central object in the theory of rough paths, which provides an integration theory for highly irregular paths. A fundamental result is Lyons' extension theorem, which allows us to compute the signature of rough paths, and in turn provides a way to compute parallel transport of arbitrarily irregular paths. In this article, we consider the notion of surface holonomy, a generalization of parallel transport to the higher dimensional setting of surfaces parametrized by rectangular domains, which preserves the higher algebraic structures of horizontal and vertical concatenation. Building on work of Kapranov, we introduce the surface signature, which is universal among surface holonomy maps with respect to continuous 2-connections. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of a rough surface and prove a surface extension theorem, which allows us to compute the signature of rough surfaces. By exploiting the universal property of the surface signature, this provides a method to compute the surface holonomy of arbitrarily irregular surfaces.

An algebraic geometry of paths via the iterated-integrals signature

Abstract:Contrary to previous approaches bringing together algebraic geometry and signatures of paths, we introduce a Zariski topology on the space of paths itself, and study path varieties consisting of all paths whose iterated-integrals signature satisfies certain polynomial equations. Particular emphasis lies on the role of the non-associative halfshuffle, which makes it possible to describe varieties of paths that satisfy certain relations all along their trajectory. Specifically, we may understand the set of paths on a given classical algebraic variety in $\mathbb{R}^d$ starting from a fixed point as a path variety, e.g. paths on a sphere. While the characteristic geometric property of halfshuffle varieties is that they are stable under stopping paths at an earlier time, we furthermore study varieties which are stable under the natural (semi)group operation of concantenation of paths. We point out how the notion of dimension for path varieties crucially depends on the fact that they may be reducible into countably infinitely many subvarieties. Finally, we see that studying halfshuffle varieties naturally leads to a generalization of classical algebraic curves, surfaces and affine varieties in finite dimensional space. These generalized algebraic sets, an example being the graph of the exponential function, are now described through iterated-integral equations. Abstract:The signature of a sample path is a formal series of iterated integrals along the path. The expected signature of a stochastic process gives a summary of the process that is especially useful for studying stochastic differential equations driven by the process. Lyons-Ni derived a partial differential equation for the expected signature of Brownian motion, starting at a point z in a bounded domain, until it hits to boundary of the domain. We focus on the domain of planar unit disc centred at 0. Motivated by recently found explicit formulae for some terms in the expected signature of this process in terms of Bessel functions, we derive a tensor series representation for this expected signature, coming from from studying Lyons-Ni's PDE. Although the representation is rather involved, it simplifies significantly to give a formula for the polynomial leading order term in each tensor component of the expected signature.

Abstract:Paths of persistence diagrams provide a summary of the dynamic topological structure of a one-parameter family of metric spaces. These summaries can be used to study and characterize the dynamic shape of data such as swarming behavior in multi-agent systems, time-varying fMRI scans from neuroscience, and time-dependent scalar fields in hydrodynamics. While persistence diagrams can provide a powerful topological summary of data, the standard space of persistence diagrams lacks the sufficient algebraic and analytic structure required for many theoretical and computational analyses. We enrich the space of persistence diagrams by isometrically embedding it into a Lipschitz-free space, a Banach space built from a universal construction. We utilize the Banach space structure to define bounded variation paths of persistence diagrams, which can be studied using the path signature, a reparametrization-invariant characterization of paths valued in a Banach space. The signature is universal and characteristic which allows us to theoretically characterize measures on the space of paths and motivates its use in the context of kernel methods. However, kernel methods often require a feature map into a Hilbert space, so we introduce the moment map, a stable and injective feature map for static persistence diagrams, and compose it with the discrete path signature, producing a computable feature map into a Hilbert space. Finally, we demonstrate the efficacy of our methods by applying this to a parameter estimation problem for a 3D model of swarming behavior.

Abstract:We investigate the following question: if $A$ and $A'$ are products of finite cyclic groups, when does there exist an isomorphism $f: A \to A'$ which preserves the union of coordinate hyperplanes (equivalently, so that $f(x)$ has some coordinate zero if and only if $x$ has some coordinate zero)? We show that if such an isomorphism exists, then $A$ and $A'$ have the same cyclic factors; if all cyclic factors have order larger than $2$, the map $f$ is diagonal up to permutation, hence sends coordinate hyperplanes to coordinate hyperplanes. Thus one can recover the coordinate hyperplanes from knowledge of their union. This result is well-adapted for application to invariants with a certain multiplicativity property. As a model application, we show using twisted signatures that there exists a family of compact 4-manifolds $X(n)$ with $H_1 X(n) = \mathbb Z/n$ with the property that $\prod X(n_i) \cong \prod X(n'_j)$ if and only if the factors may be identified (up to permutation), and that the induced map on first homology is (up to permutation) represented by a diagonal matrix.

Abstract:We study the class of polynomials whose Hessians evaluated at any point of a closed convex cone have Lorentzian signature. This class is a generalization to the remarkable class of Lorentzian polynomials. We prove that hyperbolic polynomials and conic stable polynomials belong to this class, and the set of polynomials with Lorentzian signature is closed. Finally, we develop a method for computing permanents of nonsingular matrices which belong to a class that includes nonsingular $k$-locally singular matrices via hyperbolic programming.

Abstract:The signature of a path is a sequence of tensors whose entries are iterated integrals, playing a key role in stochastic analysis and applications. The set of all signature tensors at a particular level gives rise to the universal signature variety. We show that the parametrization of this variety induces a natural decomposition of the tensor space via representation theory, and connect this to the study of path invariants. We also examine the question of determining what is the tensor rank of a signature tensor.

Abstract:The signature of a path is a sequence of tensors which allows to uniquely reconstruct the path. In this paper we propose a systematic study of basic properties of signature tensors, starting from their rank, symmetries and conciseness. We prove a sharp upper bound on the rank of signature tensors of piecewise linear paths. We show that there are no skew-symmetric signature tensors of order three or more, and we also prove that specific instances of partial symmetry can only happen for tensors of order three. Finally, we give a simple geometric characterization of paths whose signature tensors are not concise.

Abstract:Under certain conditions, we construct a countable Markov partition for pointwise hyperbolic diffeomorphism on an open invariant subset , which allows the Lyapunov exponents to be zero. From this partition, we define a symbolic extension that is finite-to-one and onto a subset of O that carries the same finite f-invariant measures as O. Our method relies upon shadowing theory of a recurrent-pointwise-pseudo-orbit that we introduce. As a canonical application, we estimate the number of closed orbits for f.

Abstract:In this paper we consider families of holomorphic maps defined on subsets of the complex plane, and show that the technique developed in [24] to treat unfolding of critical relations can also be used to deal with cases where the critical orbit converges to a hyperbolic attracting or a parabolic periodic orbit. As before this result applies to rather general families of maps, such as polynomial-like mappings, provided some lifting property holds. Our Main Theorem states that either the multiplier of a hyperbolic attracting periodic orbit depends univalently on the parameter and bifurcations at parabolic periodic points are generic, or one has persistency of periodic orbits with a fixed multiplier.

Abstract:We provide a generalization of global hyperbolicity in pseudo-Riemannian spaces of signature $(p, q)$ for $p \ge q \ge 2$. We then prove the compactness of causal diamonds in globally hyperbolic spaces and deduce the existence of solutions to a Plateau problem for this class of spaces. Finally, we describe the topology of globally hyperbolic spaces in a result generalising Geroch's splitting theorem.

A High Order Solver for Signature Kernels

Abstract:Signature kernels are at the core of several machine learning algorithms for analysing multivariate time series. The kernel of two bounded variation paths (such as piecewise linear interpolations of time series data) is typically computed by solving a Goursat problem for a hyperbolic partial differential equation (PDE) in two independent time variables. However, this approach becomes considerably less practical for highly oscillatory input paths, as they have to be resolved at a fine enough scale to accurately recover their signature kernel, resulting in significant time and memory complexities. To mitigate this issue, we first show that the signature kernel of a broader class of paths, known as \emph{smooth rough paths}, also satisfies a PDE, albeit in the form of a system of coupled equations. We then use this result to introduce new algorithms for the numerical approximation of signature kernels. As bounded variation paths (and more generally geometric $p$-rough paths) can be approximated by piecewise smooth rough paths, one can replace the PDE with rapidly varying coefficients in the original Goursat problem by an explicit system of coupled equations with piecewise constant coefficients derived from the first few iterated integrals of the original input paths. While this approach requires solving more equations, they do not require looking back at the complex and fine structure of the initial paths, which significantly reduces the computational complexity associated with the analysis of highly oscillatory time series.

Abstract:In the last decade, the concept of path signature has found great success in data science applications, where it provides features describing the path. This is partly explained by the fact that it is possible to compute the signature of a path in linear time, owing to a dynamic programming principle, based on Chen's identity. The path signature can be regarded as a specific example of product or time-/path-ordered integral. In other words, it can be seen as a 1-parameter object build on iterated integrals over a path. Increasing the number of parameters by one, which amounts to considering iterated integrals over surfaces, is more complicated. An observation that is familiar in the context of higher gauge theory where multiparameter iterated integrals play an important role. The 2-parameter case is naturally related to a non-commutative version of Stokes' theorem, which is understood to be fundamentally linked to the concept of crossed modules of groups. Indeed, crossed modules with non-trivial kernel of the feedback map permit to compute features of a surface that go beyond what can be expressed by computing line integrals along the boundary of a surface. A good candidate for the crossed analog of free Lie algebra then seems to be a certain free crossed module over it. Building on work by Kapranov, we study the analog to the classical path signature taking values in such a free crossed module of Lie algebra. In particular, we provide a Magnus-type expression for the logarithm of surface signature as well as a sewing lemma for the crossed module setting.
