Abstract:LASER-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was applied using a long-duration single pulse on an immersed brass alloys target for spectroscopic studies. The plasma of the alloys was generated in air and underwater using a single pulse with longer duration of Nd:YAG laser. The spectral profiles of the Copper (Cu) emission lines were investigated, and we observed that the emission lines were severely affected by self-absorption in the underwater measurements. The LIBS signals were corrected before quantitative analysis through calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS). The plasma parameters, electron number density, and plasma temperature were calculated, and the results were compared for both LIBS measurements. The results showed that the use of a long-duration pulse allows in situ quantitative analysis of the heavy metal alloys in underwater, such as Cu.

Abstract:<p>In the micro-laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy field, when the laser ablated crater on the surface of the sample is less than 10 μm, it is difficult to detect the plasma emission line because of short lifetime of excited plasma, and simultaneous quantitative analysis of multiple elements is rarely reported. In this paper, a picosecond LIBS micro-area analysis scheme is proposed. Compared with the femtosecond laser micro-area analysis system, this scheme is more mature and reliable, and is more beneficial to engineering applications. In addition, in this study, the effect of the number of laser pulses on the crater morphology was studied. It was observed that a certain crater depth would have an enhancement effect on the signal, and by controlling the laser energy, a crater less than the diffraction limit was obtained. Moreover, a multielement simultaneous analysis on a set of molybdenum-copper stainless steel samples containing 40%-70% iron was performed when the ablated crater had an outer diameter of approximately 5 μm and an inner diameter of approximately 3 μm. By accumulating spectral intensity, background removal, and abnormal point processing, the calibration results for the eight elements of Mn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Ti, V, Nb and Al were not less than 0.95 using the basic calibration method. Among them, the calibration results for Ni, Cu, V, Nb, Al elements are all higher than 0.99 and the detection limits of the obtained elements range from 0.04% to 1.8%.</p>

Abstract:The working principle of the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) is interpreted.A LIBS experimental setup is developed based on Nd∶YAG laser and CCD grating spectrometer.Several experiments were carried out to study the effect of laser pulse energy,delay time and pressure.Atomic spectra was obtained using lower pulse energy;The best S/N could be realized by adjusting the delay time;Some samples could be induced to breakdown without strong continuum background;Emission signal with good S/N could be obtained at low pressure(5×10-5Pa),but the signal intensity was lower than at air pressure.The standard atomic spectra could be obtained by carrying out LIBS analysis of pure samples in the sample chamber,and the elemental recognition of unknown samples could be realized by comparing their atomic spectra with the standard spectra,in which the system recognition error was avoided.

Abstract:We develop a system to measure the elemental composition of unprepared samples using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in our laboratory, which can be used for the determination of elements in solids, liquids and aerosols. A description of the instrumentation, including laser, sample chamber and detection, is followed by a brief discussion. The time-resolved LIBS of aluminum at atmospheric pressure is presented. At the end, the possibilities and later uses of this technique are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is widely used to analyze the composition and the concentration of elements in materials,which is based on the atomic excitation and emission spectrum.It has many advantages,such as rapid,multi-element simultaneous detection and without sample pretreatment.In this paper,research progress on the application of metal element detection in such fields as alloy,soil,water,and food is reviewed.It is considered that there are some problems in this technology at present,such as low detection accuracy,poor repeatability,unstable detection signal.It is also found that the research and development of LIBS based metal element detection instrument should be developed towards the direction of conventional,portable and high precision.

Abstract:Six brass alloys were tested using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to measure the optimal spectral wavelength of Cu and to determine the optimum system configurations for alloy measurements. The accuracy of the calibration curve was improved by a linear correlation for interference by the other elements and an exponential relationship for self-absorption. Multivariate regression method was used to compensate for the matrix effects. Results show a very satisfying improvement using the multivariate analysis method with the coefficient of determination of the optimized calibration curve improved from 0.953 8 to 0.999 8.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopic (LIBS) analysis of copper under the action of the ultrafast picosecond Nd:YAG laser and the specifications calculated from the electron temperature of plasma generated by the fundamental (1064 nm), second (532 nm), third (355 nm), and fourth (266 nm) laser harmonics. In this work, a laser pulse energy of 60 mJ±5% with a duration of 170 ps, a beam diameter of ∼05±01 mm, and a laser intensity 179∙1011 W/cm2 ±8% for a single shot was applied. The electron temperature is measured using three spectral lines of neutral copper (Cu I) at 515.3, 521.8, and 522.0 nm, according to the Boltzmann plot model where the local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) conditions were assumed. The electron temperature values observed are 13422, 15152, 16605, and 17783K for laser wavelengths of 266, 355, 532, and 1064 nm, respectively. The experimental analysis reveals that the plasma electron temperature rises with the laser wavelength. Variations in the mass ablation rate, inverse Bremsstrahlung absorption, and photoionization with the laser wavelength variation allow us to explore the interaction dynamics. The results obtained allow for variation of the generated plasma electron temperature by guiding the picosecond pulse wavelengths; the later may allow for controlling plasma interactions, which can be applied in plasma spectroscopy of material science.

Abstract:In the field of quantitative analysis utilizing laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), ensuring the stability and precision of the technique is a crucial consideration. This is particularly pertinent for certain engineering applications, where utilizing electric translation stages for sample scanning is not feasible. In this study, a compact optical scanning LIBS analysis system was developed using a deflection mirror design to replace the translation platform. The system achieved rapid scanning and precise analysis, with a total weight of less than 5 kg. Moreover, to quantitatively analyze Mn, Ni, Cr, Cu, and other elements in various alloy steels, a general method for selecting spectral analysis line combination was proposed. The calibration model was established utilizing 16 alloy steel samples, and its validity was assessed through a verification set of seven samples (with element content ranging from 0.021 to 2.0 wt%). The results indicate a high degree of accuracy. The calibration model determination coefficients ( ) for Mn, Ni, Cr, and Cu elements exceeded 0.99. The root-mean-square error of validation (RMSEV) was less than 0.05, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was not more than 4%. Additionally, the relative prediction errors for Mn range from 2.98% to 67.44%, for Ni range from 0.57% to 15.93%, for Cr range from 3.91% to 55.56%, and for Cu range from 0.95% to 38.1%.

Abstract:The present paper analyzed the characteristics of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) of metal element Cu in soil using the Nd:YAG (wavelength: 1064 nm) laser as the excitation source, where the spectral signals were detected by the highly resolved and wide spectral echelle spectrograph and intensified charge coupled device (ICCD). The time evolution of the characteristic spectral line of Cu was obtained by changing the delay time of ICCD at the same concentration and the gate of ICCD with wavelength of 329. 396 nm of Cu as the characteristic spectral line, from which the best delay time 1.1 micros was found. By measuring the intensities of the characteristic spectral line with different Cu concentrations, it was demonstrated that the intensities of the spectral line increased with the concentration of Cu under the condition of low concentration From the results the LIBS calibration curve of Cu was obtained, and by fitting calculation the detection limit of Cu in soil at 13. 36 microg x g(-1) was obtained.
Quantitative aluminum alloys analysis using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract:An intense laser radiation was focused on the surface of the sample to generate a plasma plume which vaporized a small amount of alloy material. The emission spectrum emitted as the plasma cooling off, which contained the information of elemental species and concentration in alloy, was collected and analyzed by high-resolution echelle grating spectrometer coupled to intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera. A series of standard aluminum alloy reference samples were analyzed for their alloying elements, including Fe, Si, and Cu. Results for Fe, Si, and Cu indicated limits of detection that ranged from 6 × 10-5 - 10 × 10-5 and almost all measurement relative errors less than 5% when mass concentration are over 0.01%. The absolute measurement errors for element with mass concentration under 0.01% were less than 0.001%.

Abstract:The spectroscopy emission characteristics of trace heavy metal copper in water enriched with graphite is studied based on laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique, with a 1064 nm wavelength Nd:YAG laser as excitation source, the echelle spectrometer and intensified charge coupled device detector are used for spectral separation and high sensitive detection with high resolution and wide spectral range. The characteristic spectral line of 324.75 nm with detection delay time 1100 ns and gate time 2100 ns is selected for copper (Cu) in the experiment. The calibration curve of Cu is plotted based on different concentration measurement results, and the limit of detection with 0.0672 mg/L is obtained for Cu in water. The reference data is provided for further study on the fast measurement of trace heavy metals in water by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy technique.

Abstract:Spectral interference and self-absorption seriously affect the accuracy of quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). In this work, we used LIBS assisted with laser-stimulated absorption (LSA-LIBS) to solve these problems. Taking nickel (Ni) in the alloy structural steel as an example, the results show that the spectral interference of Ni lines was eliminated, the self-absorption factor of the Ni I 341.47 nm line was reduced by 85%, and the average relative error for determination of Ni element was reduced by 83% using LSA-LIBS. The results indicate that spectral interference and self-absorption can be reduced simultaneously in LSA-LIBS.
An Echellograms-Based Quantitative Analysis Method of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:The high-resolution broadband LIBS spectrum is typically acquired using an echelle spectrometer and array detectors. However, the full frame (i.e., echellogram) captured by detector is commonly converted to 1D spectrum for the further analysis, which would both limit the detection speed of LIBS and potentially degenerate the analytical performance. In this work, we propose an echellograms-based analysis method for the quantification of minor metal elements in steel. Two metal elements, Mn and Ti, are chosen to validate the feasibility of the analytical method. The LASSO algorithm is used to build the multivariate regression model using LIBS spectra and echellograms respectively. The analytical performance obtained with the echellograms-based model is compared with that of spectra-based model. The efficiency of the echellograms-based quantitative analysis method is demonstrated with better prediction accuracy and precision. Notably, the echellogram-based regression model involves only tens to thousands of pixels from the echellogram, which can be selectively read out using a CMOS detector. The combination of echellogram-based quantitative analysis method and CMOS detector provides new ideas for high-frequency LIBS detection.
Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy based on single beam splitting and geometric configuration for effective signal enhancement

Abstract:A new laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) based on single-beam-splitting (SBS) and proper optical geometric configuration has been initially explored in this work for effective signal enhancement. In order to improve the interaction efficiency of laser energy with the ablated material, a laser beam operated in pulse mode was divided into two streams to ablate/excite the target sample in different directions instead of the conventional one beam excitation in single pulse LIBS (SP-LIBS). In spatial configuration, the laser beam geometry plays an important role in the emission signal enhancement. Thus, an adjustable geometric configuration with variable incident angle between the two splitted laser beams was constructed for achieving maximum signal enhancement. With the optimized angles of 60° and 70° for Al and Cu atomic emission lines at 396.15 nm and 324.75 nm respectively, about 5.6- and 4.8-folds signal enhancements were achieved for aluminum alloy and copper alloy samples compared to SP-LIBS. Furthermore, the temporal analysis, in which the intensity of atomic lines in SP-LIBS decayed at least ten times faster than the SBS-LIBS, proved that the energy coupling efficiency of SBS-LIBS was significantly higher than that of SP-LIBS.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is one of the most promising technologies to be applied to metallurgical composition online monitoring in these days. In order to study the spectral characters of LIBS spectrum and to investigate the quantitative analysis method of material composition under vacuum and high temperature environment, a LIBS measurement system was designed and set up which can be used for conducting experiments with high-temperature or molten samples in different vacuum environment. The system consists of a Q-switched Nd : YAG laser used as the light source, lens with different focus lengths used for laser focusing and spectrum signal collecting, a spectrometer used for detecting the signal of LIBS spectrums, and a vacuum system for holding and heating the samples while supplying a vacuum environment. The vacuum was achieved and maintained by a vacuum pump and an electric induction furnace was used for heating the system. The induction coil was integrated to the vacuum system by attaching to a ceramic sealing flange. The system was installed and testified, and the results indicate that the vacuum of the system can reach 1X 10(-4) Pa without heating, while the heating temperature could be about 1 600 degreeC, the system can be used for melting metal samples such as steel and aluminum and get the LIBS spectrum of the samples at the same time. Utilizing this system, LIBS experiments were conducted using standard steel samples under different vacuum or high-temperature conditions. Results of comparison between LIBS spectrums of solid steel samples under different vacuum were achieved, and so are the spectrums of molten and solid steel samples under vacuum environment. Through data processing and theoretical analyzing of these spectrums, the initial results of those experiments are in good agreement with the results that are presently reported, which indicates that the whole system functions well and is available for molten metal LIBS experiment under vacuum environment.

Abstract:It is still challenging to apply laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to slurry on-stream analysis due to the moisture in slurry samples causing the low spectral intensity. In this work, a high-frequency pulsed fiber laser was proposed to quickly remove the moisture in slurry samples at the detection point for the first time. The spectral emission intensity and line broadening due Stark effect were investigated for the dual-pulse of fiber laser assisted LIBS (FL-LIBS) mode and signal-pulse LIBS (SP-LIBS) mode. It found that the spectral intensities of Fe and Ca elements were enhanced, while the matrix elements of H and O elements were decreased. Moreover, the currently available spectroscopic diagnostics of plasma, such Boltzmann plot have been used to measure the plasma temperature, while the hydrogen line broadening have been used in the characterization of electron densities. It reveals the type of higher-temperature and lower-density plasma was obtained. The experimental results demonstrated that the fiber laser had the potential to improve LIBS signal intensity and spectral resolution for aqueous matrix samples.
Optimization of copper detection based on polarization-resolved laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract:In order to obtain stable spectral data of copper plasma, a detection platform of polarization-resolved laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (PRLIBS) was built. The PRLIBS characteristic function of copper was constructed by combining the spectral path of plasma discrete spectrum and contact spectrum. The system can not only measure the original data, but also obtain the polarization information in the spectral data. By analyzing the extraction method of spatial polarized light information, the characteristic model of S-wave intensity information in PRLIBS was derived. The results show that in the decay process of plasma energy, the anisotropy of plasma recombination under local thermal equilibrium makes the number of deflected particles of atoms and electrons different in unit time, which leads to the polarization of radiation. The polarization characteristics of the plasma spectrum decreased with the increase of laser energy density. The S-wave was very active, and the polarization of continuous media was much stronger than that of discrete line emission. The advantages were helpful to obtain more stable characteristic peak signals. As a plasma element identification method, PRLIBS makes up for the deficiency of plasma detection technology, and can provide a scientific basis for the safety and non-destructive detection of heavy metals.
Detection of Copper in Solution by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Based on Nanoparticle Chip

Abstract:We report a highly sensitive electrolytic copper (Cu) detection method using nanoparticle enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (NELIBS) for metal smelting processes. The sulfate solution Cu with content ranging from 10 to 50 g/L was prepared and measured on the nanoparticle chip. The experimental results showed that the Cu spectral line intensity of NELIBS increased 5.5 to 9.4 times compared with typical LIBS without nanoparticles. The calibration curve was established based on the spectral line intensity at Cu I 327.40 nm according to the different Cu content in the solution. The determination coefficient R-2 of the calibration curve was 0.99. The method of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy based on drying liquid droplets on the nanoparticle chip can be applied to the rapid determination of Cu content in the copper electrolyte. Parametric Study of Fiber-Optic Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for Elemental Analysis of Z3CN20-09M Steel from Nuclear Power Plants

Abstract:A compact laser probe of the fiber-optic laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (FO-LIBS) system, based on a single-lens for energy focus and radiation collection, was developed in this paper. Elemental analysis of the Z3CN20-09 M steel sample, which is usually used as the structural material for main pipelines in nuclear power plants, was carried out using this laser probe. Most elements (e.g. Fe, Cr, Ni, Mn, Mo, Co, Cu, Nb, and Si) were successfully detected. The distance between the fiber output end face and the lens, which was one of the most important factors affecting the focused laser spot size and further inducing different degrees of self-absorption, was optimized. It was clear that the spectral intensities increased with the distance before decreasing. The optimal range of the distance was obtained by finding out the maximum spectral intensities and minimum spectral fluctuations. The effects of distances, which can be understood as the effects of spot sizes, were studied using plasma diagnostic methods. When the distance was shorter than the optimal range, the distinct self-absorption was observed, which was analyzed by the fast photography. Calculated changing trend of self-absorption effects was consistent with the observed spectral profiles. When the distance was longer than the optimal range, the plasma temperature and density became lower after similar to 1 mu s. This demonstrates that it is possible for the single-lens laser probe to realize the accurate calibration and control of the focused spot size to achieve the best working conditions for a FO-LIBS system.

The R-2 factors of calibration curves of elements Mn, Ti, V, and Cr in pig iron were 0.9965, 0.9983, 0.9963, and 0.991, respectively, and their root mean square errors of cross-validation were 0.0501, 0.0054, 0.0205, and 0.0245 wt%, respectively. Six test samples were used for the validation of the performance of the calibration curves established by the portable LIBS. The average relative errors of elements Mn, Ti, V, and Cr were 2.5%, 11.7%, 13.0%, and 5.6%, respectively. These results were comparable with most results reported in traditional LIBS in steel or other matrices. However, the portable LIBS is flexible, compact, and robust, providing a promising prospect in industrial application.
