Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is an essential process during electrochemical water -splitting. Due to its sluggish kinetics, low cost and highly efficient catalyst is invariably desired to decrease its overpotential for large-scale application. However, the overpotential of most advanced OER electrocatalysts is still more than 200 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2. In this work, we constructed active layered NiFe double hydroxides with cation defects on self-supported three-dimensional (3D) CoNi nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube composite substrate as integrated OER catalyst. Strikingly, electrochemical measurements showed that the optimized sample exhibited outstanding OER activity with low overpotentials of 178 and 268 mV at the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2 in alkaline environment, alongside a good durability. The excellent OER performance was ascribed to the strongly synergistic effect of intrinsically active NiFe double hydroxide layers with abundant cation vacancies and 3D carbon nanotube composite substrate with good conductivity and various functional moieties, thus facilitating the electrocatalytic kinetic.(c) 2022 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Abstract:NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDH) are low cost and earth abundant electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, the NiFe-LDH nanosheets induced by ZIF-67 (NiFe-LDH/ZIF-67) were prepared via a coupling method of a self-sacrificing template method and a co-precipitation method. Atomic force microscope and field emission transmission electron microscopy analysis indicate that NiFe-LDH/ZIF-67 consist of thin porous nanosheets. X-ray photoelectron spectra analysis show that NiFe-LDH/ZIF-67 contains more oxygen vacancies than pristine NiFe-LDH. The overpotential of NiFe-LDH/ZIF-67 is 222 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) for OER, lower than that of ZIF-67, pristine NiFe-LDH, and the commercial RuO2, indicating that its high electrocatalytic activity for OER. The high electrocatalytic activity of NiFe-LDH/ZIF-67 may be attributed to its thin porous nanosheet structure, which is derived from the structural influence of ZIF-67 and the coupling effect of a self-sacrificing template method and a co-precipitation method. Multiple structural defects in ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets synergistically and remarkably boost water oxidation reaction

Abstract:Modifying electrocatalysts nanostructures and tuning their electronic properties through defects-oriented synthetic strategies are essential to improve the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of electrocatalysts. Current synthetic strategies about electrocatalysts mainly target the single or double structural defects, while the researches about the synergistic effect of multiple structural defects are rare. In this work, the ultrathin NiFe layered double hydroxide nanosheets with a holey structure, oxygen vacancies and Ni3+ defects on nickel foam (NiFe-LDH-NSs/NF) are prepared by employing a simple and green H2O2-assisted etching method. The synergistic effect of the above three defects leads to the exposure of more active sites and significant improvement of the intrinsic activity. The optimized catalyst exhibits an excellent OER performance with an extraordinarily low overpotential of 170 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 39.3 mV·dec−1 in 1 M KOH solution. Density functional theory calculations reveal this OER performance arises from pseudo re-oxidized metal-stable Ni3+ near oxygen vacancies (Ovac), which suppresses 3d-eg of Ni-site and elevates d-band center towards the competitively low electron-transfer barrier. This work provides a new insight to fabricate advanced electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion technologies.

Abstract:Highly active, cost-effective, and stable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of primary importance in electrochemical water splitting. Although the direct growth of active components on the substrate is an effective strategy to enhance the catalytic activity, the weak adhesion between active material and substrate tremendously hampers their long-term utilization with excellent performance. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) hollow structure of NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) on NiFe foam (NiFe LDH@NiFe) is designed via acid-corrosion-induced strategy. The self-supported electrode was obtained through a process based on an autologous NiFe foam, in which the electrode/gas/electrolyte interface and electrocatalyst/substrate interface are delicately engineered. Remarkably, the NiFe LDH@NiFe only needs an ultralow overpotential of 201 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) for OER in 1 M KOH electrolyte, along with superb stability. The high catalytic activity is attributed to the intimate connection between the nanosheet arrays and substrate, superior intrinsic activity, and fast electron transfer. More importantly, the excellent hydrophilicity and aerophobicity of NiFe LDH@NiFe enables significantly improved infiltration of electrolytes, quick release of oxygen bubbles, and remarkably enhanced charge transfer. Thus, the obtained NiFe LDH@NiFe holds promise for electrocatalytic applications. Finally, the growth mechanism of NiFe LDH@NiFe is investigated and discussed in detail.
Ultrasound-seeded Vapor-Phase-transport Growth of Boundary-Rich Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheet Arrays for Highly Efficient Water Splitting

Abstract:Noble-metal-free electrodes are of significant importance for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Transition-metal-based layered double hydroxides (TM LDHs) show great potential as advanced electrocatalysts, but low electrochemical active areas and poor electronic conductivity limit their catalytic activity. Herein, we report a novel secondary growth strategy to synthesize ultrathin NiCoFe LDH nanosheets anchored on nickel foam (NF). By coupling ultrasound-assisted oxidation (UAO) to deposit dense seeds of low-crystalline NiCoFe LDH array on semisacrificial NF, and vapor-phase-transport (VPT) of urea for kinetic control over nanosheet thickness, hierarchical self-supported electrodes with high density of exposed active sites and abundant boundaries have been facilely obtained. The NiCoFe LDH/NF electrodes show an impressive electrocatalytic performance during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with required overpotentials of 217 and 227 mV to achieve current densities of 50 and 100 mA cm(-2) respectively, with over 150 h long-term stability, outperforming those synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis (HTT) as well as most state-of-the-art electrocatalysts. The overall water splitting device assembled using the NiCoFe LDH/NF electrode as both anode and cathode shows an ultralow cell voltage of 1.56 V to obtain 10 mA cm(-2). This strategy provides a simple and scalable methodology for synthesizing high-activity catalysts for efficient electrochemical processes.

Abstract:Designing highly efficient, stable and low-cost electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in producing hydrogenviathe electrolysis of water. Herein, we have reported a facile and manageable approach to fabricate a 3D steady core-shell dendrite electrocatalyst with a nickel cobalt sulfide porous nanosheet as an outer layer and a CuO nanowire as an inner core supported by a Cu foam for OER. Benefiting from the advantages of this unique 3D core-shell structure that endows abundant active sites, abundant interfacial heterostructures, high-speed electron transport network and short diffusion paths for releasing O(2)bubbles, the electrocatalyst displays outstanding OER performance with low overpotentials of only 240, 289, and 309 mV at the current densities of 10, 50, and 100 mA cm(-2), respectively, and high stability over 48 h at a current density of 50 mA cm(-2)in alkaline media. The excellent properties of the synthesized 3D dendrite-like catalyst for OER can pave the way for large-scale practical water electrolysis.
A Simple Synthetic Strategy toward Defect‐Rich Porous Monolayer NiFe‐Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheets for Efficient Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Abstract:In this work, porous monolayer nickel‐iron layered double hydroxide (PM‐LDH) nanosheets with a lateral size of ≈30 nm and a thickness of ≈0.8 nm are successfully synthesized by a facile one‐step strategy. Briefly, an aqueous solution containing Ni2+ and Fe3+ is added dropwise to an aqueous formamide solution at 80 °C and pH 10, with the PM‐LDH product formed within only 10 min. This fast synthetic strategy introduces an abundance of pores in the monolayer NiFe‐LDH nanosheets, resulting in PM‐LDH containing high concentration of oxygen and cation vacancies, as is confirmed by extended X‐ray absorption fine structure and electron spin resonance measurements. The oxygen and cation vacancies in PM‐LDH act synergistically to increase the electropositivity of the LDH nanosheets, while also enhancing H2O adsorption and bonding strength of the OH* intermediate formed during water electrooxidation, endowing PM‐LDH with outstanding performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). PM‐LDH offers a very low overpotential (230 mV) for OER at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, with a Tafel slope of only 47 mV dec−1, representing one of the best OER performance yet reported for a NiFe‐LDH system. The results encourage the wider utilization of porous monolayer LDH nanosheets in electrocatalysis, catalysis, and solar cells.

Abstract:Morphology control plays a pivotal role in achieving an exceptionally efficient electrocatalyst with abundant active sites and outstanding electrical conductivity. In this study, we employed a sophisticated chemical nanoengineering technique to fabricate an exquisitely thin NiFe(OH)x electrocatalyst on Ni3S2 nanosheets. Firstly, the Ni3S2 nanosheets were synthesized through an innovative in situ one-step sulfurization reaction of the Ni(OH)2 nanosheets grown on Ni foam. Subsequently, a remarkable ultrathin layer of NiFe(OH)x was precisely deposited onto the surface of the Ni3S2 to form a captivating core-shell structure using a chemical dipping method. The resulting electrode, denoted as NiFe(OH)x/Ni3S2/NF, exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic activity and durability towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), owing to its expansive specific surface area, rapid electron transport, and robust interlayer bonding. Notably, this electrode achieved an impressive current density of 100 mA cm-2 at an astonishingly low overpotential of 218 mV while maintaining a low Tafel slope of 37.9 mV dec-1 and remarkable stability for up to 12 days in 1 M KOH aqueous solution. This work presents an alluring novel approach for constructing highly efficient ultrathin catalysts for water splitting.
Spatially Confined Growth of Ultrathin NiFe Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheets Within Carbon Nanofibers Network for Highly Efficient Water Oxidation

Abstract:The rational design of catalysts with low cost, high efficient and robust stability toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is greatly desired but remains a formidable challenge. In this work, a one-pot, spatially confined strategy was reported to fabricate ultrathin NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets interconnected by ultrafine, strong carbon nanofibers (CNFs) network. The as-fabricated NiFe-LDH/CNFs catalyst exhibits enhanced OER catalytic activity in terms of low overpotential of 230 mV to obtain an OER current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and very small Tafel slope of 34 mV dec(-1), outperforming pure NiFe-LDH nanosheets assembly, commercial RuO2, and most non-noble metal catalysts ever reported. It also delivers an excellent structural and electrocatalytic stability upon the long-term OER operation at a large current of 30 mA cm(-2) for 40 h. Furthermore, the cell assembled by using NiFe-LDH/ CNFs and commercial Pt/C as anode (thorn) and cathode (-) ((+) NiFe-LDH/CNFs||Pt/C(-)) only requires a potential of 1.50 V to deliver the water splitting current of 10 mA cm(-2), 130 mV lower than that of (+)RuO2||Pt/C(-) couple, demonstrating great potential for applications in cost-efficient water splitting devices. Abstract:The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting is great critical for the massive production of hydrogen energy. In this work, a kind of novel γ-MnOOH nanorod electrocatalyst was fabricated via the two-step method. Firstly, γ-MnOOH nanorods were grown in situ on the nickel foam conductive substrate by a simple hydrothermal method. Then, NiFe-LDHs were combined on the γ-MnOOH/NF surface by electrochemical deposition to prepare the γ-MnOOH/NF core-shell structure catalyst. Due to good charge transfer capability, high exposure of active sites as well as the interfacial interaction between NiFe-LDHs and γ-MnOOH, the obtained core-shell structure catalyst exhibited excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity in alkaline media. The overpotential of 226 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 for OER could be achieved with a low Tafel slope of 88 mV dec - 1 , and almost no current density loss occurred after the 24 h i-t stability testing. Furthermore, this catalyst also possessed good performance in overall water splitting, which could afford a current density of 10 mA cm −2 by 1.69 V cell voltage.

Abstract:MoO3/NiFe‐NF with oxygen defects is synthesized by hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. The catalyst exhibits high HER/OER activity in alkline solutions with 85/212 mV overpotential. The heterojunction structure and oxygen vacancies accelerate the catalytic reactions. MoO3/NiFe‐NF exhibits an ultralow OWS potential of 1.43 V@10 mA cm−2. The rational design of inexpensive metal electrocatalysts with exciting catalytic activity for overall water splitting (OWS) remains a significant challenge. Heterostructures of NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe‐LDHs) with abundant oxygen defects and tunable electronic properties have garnered considerable attention. Here, a self‐supporting heterostructured catalyst (named MoO3/NiFe‐NF) is synthesized via a hydrothermal method to grow NiFe‐LDH with oxygen vacancies (OV) in situ on inexpensive nickel foam (NF). Subsequently, MoO3 is anchored and grown on the surface of NiFe‐LDH by electrodeposition. The obtained catalysts achieved outstanding oxygen/hydrogen evolution reaction (OER/HER, 212 mV/85 mV@10 mA cm−2) performance in 1 m KOH. Additionally, when MoO3/NiFe‐NF is utilized as the cathode and anode in OWS, a current density of 10 mA cm−2 can be obtained as an ultralow battery voltage of 1.43 V, a significantly lower value compared to the commercial electrolyzer incorporating Pt/C and IrO2 electrode materials. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and advanced spectroscopy technology are conducted to reveal the effects of heterojunctions and OV on the internal electronic structure of the electrical catalysts. Mainly, the present study provides a novel tactic for the rational design of remarkable, low‐cost NiFe‐LDH electrocatalysts with heterostructures for OWS.

Defective NiMn LDH prepared using hydrogen evolution coupled electrodeposition for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract:Defect engineering is widely acknowledged as an effective strategy for exposing catalytically active sites. However, many post-treatment approaches tend to be intricate and compromise the stability of catalysts, limiting the reusability of the defective materials. In this study, we introduce a simple and novel strategy for preparing defective materials for the first time, known as hydrogen evolution coupled electrodeposition (HECED). In the HECED method, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the hydroxide deposition reaction are synergistically coupled. This allows for the direct preparation of defective materials without the need for subsequent secondary processing. Prepared through the direct synthesis strategy, the D-NiMn LDH catalyst exhibits highly promising performance and stability for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. Subsequently, FeS nanoparticles are loaded onto the D-NiMn LDH to create a D-NiMn LDH/FeS heterostructure, which demonstrates an ultralow overpotential of 184 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and fast reaction kinetics of 49 mV dec −1 . This catalyst is currently one of the most attractive options for the OER. Significantly, by utilizing D-NiMn LDH as the cathode and D-NiMn LDH/FeS as the anode, the overall water cell can achieve 10 mA cm −2 at 1.50 V. Our investigation reveals that during the OER, D-NiMn LDH/FeS undergoes self-reconstruction, leading to the formation of SO x -FeNiMn (oxy)hydroxides, which act as active sites and facilitate the OER process. Our study not only presents a novel and simple method for the direct synthesis of defective NiMn LDH, but also provides new insights into designing stable and reusable defective materials.

Abstract:Economic, efficient, and stable layered double hydroxides (LDHs) based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts are recognized as promising substitutions of precious catalysts. While LDHs composites suffer from low intrinsic activity, which slightly impedes their wide utilization in energy conversion. Here, we demonstrate a kind of three-dimensional (3D) freestanding flower-like NiCo-LDHs materials with abundant oxygen vacancies are synthesized for electrocatalytic OER application. Simple solvent-thermal method is conducted in ethanol-N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) mixed solution, which owns slight etching effect to obtain 3D open structures. The as-synthesized Ni1Co1-LDHs-E1D1 composite (in which molar ratio of nickel‑cobalt and volume ratio of ethanol-DMF are both 1:1) is characterized with abundant oxygen vacancies on surface and ultrathin nanosheets morphology with large surface area. It exhibits a relatively low overpotential (260 mV) to drive the current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a low Tafel slope of 72 mV dec−1, as well as high durability in alkaline solution. This work confirms an ingenious strategy for designing 3D vacancy-rich LDHs functional electrocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Designing bifunctional electrocatalytic materials with non-precious metals for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a tremendous challenge. NiFe layered double-hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) materialss with modifiable nanostructures and tunable electronic properties have attracted considerable attention. At present, its modification strategies mainly include single structural defect, simple material composite and so on, while there are few studies involving multiple structure defect synergy. In this work, environmental-friendly hydrothermal-electrodeposition method was employed to build oxygen defects on the surface of NiFe layered double hydroxides and anchor NiCu nanoclusters with abundant, cheap nickel foam (NF) as the conductive substrate. The synergistic effect of oxygen defects and NiCu alloys resulted in a significant increase in the exposure of active sites and an enjoyable enhancement in intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. The obtained NiFe-LDH-Vo@NiCu sample exhibits outstanding OER (244 mV@50 mA cm−2)/HER (85 mV@10 mA cm−2) performance in 1 M KOH solution. Furthermore, NiFe-LDH-Vo@NiCu presents ultra-low battery voltage of 1.54 V as well as remarkable stability as a bifunctional electrode. Finally, DFT calculations were applied to reveal the effects of the introduction of O vacancies and the anchoring of NiCu nanoclusters on the internal electronic structure of NiFe-LDH materials. In general, this research can provide new insights into designing of high performance NiFe-LDH electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Alkaline water electrolysis is a promising strategy for the production of hydrogen and oxygen. However, developing high-efficiency non-precious electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is still a big challenge. Here, we report a nickel foam-based electrode coated with NiCoV-LDH and NiCo-LDH nanosheets (denoted as NiCo-LDH@NiCoV-LDH/NF) by a two-step method for efficient water splitting performance. The NiCo-LDH@NiCoV-LDH/NF with unique nanosheet-on-nanosheet construction can enlarge the electrochemical active specific surface area greatly, and thus accelerate the charge transfer of electrocatalytic reactions. Besides, the doping of vanadium could also improve the OER performance. The electrode only requires a low overpotential for OER (260 mV at 100 mA cm−2), and HER (80 mV at 10 mA cm−2) reactions in 1.0 mol/L KOH solution at room temperature. Furthermore, in the two-electrode water splitting test, a current density of 10 mA cm−2 was achieved at 1.55 V using 1.0 mol/L KOH solution, with excellent durability of 40 h. This work provided a facile method for developing new bifunctional catalysts.

Abstract:Exploring high-efficient, earth-abundant and stable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of vital importance for large-scale implementation of energy converting and storing. Thus, we fabricated a free-standing hierarchical heterostructure electrode of Ni 0.85 Se@CoFe LDH/NF via a rational combination of hydrothermal, selenization and electrodeposition process, among which the ultrathin CoFe LDH nanosheets intimately assembled onto the vertical aligned Ni 0.85 Se nanosheets supported on Ni foam. The constructed core-shell nanosheet arrays hold the plentiful hetero-interfaces and intimate interactions through metal-oxygen bonds between two individuals, which guarantee the fast OER kinetic processes. Additionally, CoFe LDH with crystalline/amorphous hybrid structure favors providing more reaction sites. Remarkably, the optimal Ni 0.85 Se@CoFe LDH/NF binary composites possess outstanding OER activity with a low overpotential of ∼223 and 280 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution as well as good durability. This research offers an alternative approach for improving electrocatalytic water splitting through constructing 3D hierarchical heterostructures.

Abstract:Developing cost efficient, robust, non-precious metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a significant challenge in water splitting for renewable energy conversion. A novel electrocatalyst of heterogeneous ultra-thin FeCo-LDH@Co(OH)2 nanosheets derived from 2D Zeolitic imidazolate framework facilitated electrons transfer for OER. DFT calculation revealed that heterogeneous interfaces reduced adsorption energy barriers of intermediates in rate-determining step of OER. The CoOOH with higher CoIII valence state derived from surface reconstruction, which was detected via in-situ Raman spectroscopy, activated O ions to provide higher intrinsic activity. XPS results confirmed that electrons transfer from Co(OH)2 to FeCo-LDH accelerated alkaline OER kinetics. The FeCo-LDH@Co(OH)2–0.5 exhibited low overpotentials of 230 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and maintained long durability for 300 h. This study opened up a new method for design and synthesis of ultrathin LDHs electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Herein, the hydrothermal synthesis of porous ultrathin ternary NiFeV layer double hydroxides (LDHs) nanosheets grown on Nickel foam (NF) substrate as a highly efficient electrode toward overall water splitting in alkaline media is reported. The lateral size of the nanosheets is about a few hundreds of nanometers with the thickness of approximate to 10 nm. Among all molar ratios investigated, the Ni0.75Fe0.125V0.125-LDHs/NF electrode depicts the optimized performance. It displays an excellent catalytic activity with a modest overpotential of 231 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 125 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1.0 m KOH electrolyte. Its exceptional activity is further shown in its small Tafel slope of 39.4 and 62.0 mV dec(-1) for OER and HER, respectively. More importantly, remarkable durability and stability are also observed. When used for overall water splitting, the Ni0.75Fe0.125V0.125-LDHs/NF electrodes require a voltage of only 1.591 V to reach 10 mA cm(-2) in alkaline solution. These outstanding performances are mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of the ternary metal system that boosts the intrinsic catalytic activity and active surface area. This work explores a promising way to achieve the optimal inexpensive Ni-based hydroxide electrocatalyst for overall water splitting.
