Abstract:Multiferroics are materials that simultaneously exhibit more than one ferroic order parameters, such as ferroelectricity, ferroelasticity and ferromagnetism. Recently, multiferroicity has received a significant revival of interest due to the colossal magnetoelectric coupling effect for the development of nano-ferronics. In this mini-review, we focus on a recent study of ferroelectricity, magnetism and magnetoelectric coupling within the newly discovered organic charge-transfer complexes. A systemic understanding of the origin of organic ferroelectricity and magnetism is provided. Furthermore, based on the recent mechanism of the magnetoelectric coupling effect: spin-ordering-induced electric polarization and ferroelectricity-induced spin alignment, we further present the recent progress in organic charge-transfer multiferroics and metal-organic framework multiferroics. The coexistence of polarization and magnetism at room temperature of organic charge-transfer complexes will be critical for the development of all-organic multiferroics.
Tuning The Competition Between Ferromagnetism And Antiferromagnetism In A Half-Doped Manganite Through Magnetoelectric Coupling

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of controlling the magnetic phase transition of the heterointerface between a half-doped manganite La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and a multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) through magnetoelectric coupling. Using macroscopic magnetometry and element-selective x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Mn and Fe L edges, we discover that the ferroelectric polarization of BFO controls simultaneously the magnetization of BFO and La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (LCMO). X-ray absorption spectra at the oxygen K edge and linear dichroism at the Mn L edge suggest that the interfacial coupling is mainly derived from the superexchange between Mn and Fe t(2g) spins. The combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and mean-field theory calculations reveals that the d-electron modulation of Mn cations changes the magnetic coupling in LCMO, which controls the enhanced canted moments of interfacial BFO via the interfacial coupling. Our results demonstrate that the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic instability can be modulated by an electric field at the heterointerface, providing another pathway for the electrical field control of magnetism.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetoelectric coupling, as a fundamental physical nature and with the potential to add functionality to devices while also reducing energy consumption, has been challenging to be probed in freestanding membranes or two-dimensional materials due to their instability and fragility. In this paper, we report a magnetoelectric coupling probed by optical second harmonic generation with external magnetic field, and show the manipulation of the ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic orders by the magnetic and thermal fields in BiFeO 3 films epitaxially grown on the substrates and in the freestanding ones. Here we define an optical magnetoelectric-coupling constant, denoting the ability of controlling light-induced nonlinear polarization by the magnetic field, and found the magnetoelectric-coupling was suppressed by strain releasing but remain robust against thermal fluctuation for freestanding BiFeO 3 .

Colossal Magnetoelectric Effect in 3-1 Multiferroic Nanocomposites Originating from Ultrafine Nanodomain Structures

Abstract:We investigate colossal magnetoelectric coupling through interactions between ferroelectric and ferromagnetic nanodomains in 3-1 multiferroic BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 nanocomposites using a recent real-space phase field model based on the Landau-Ginzburg theory. A hierarchical ultrafine domain structure is characteristically formed in the nanocomposites, resulting in an extremely high density of domain walls, which causes polarization domains to be more susceptible to an external magnetic field via interfacial strain-mediation. This leads to an anomalously large magnetoelectric coupling effect in the multiferroic nanocomposites. We further demonstrate that the domain configuration and consequent magnetoelectric effect are strongly dependent on the constituent phase distribution, suggesting a promising route for the rational design of multiferroic domains and magnetoelectric effects, reminiscent of recent nano-metamaterial concepts.

Abstract:Given the paucity of single phase multiferroic materials (with large ferromagnetic moment), composite systems seem an attractive solution in the quest to realize magnetoelectric cou-pling between ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order parameters. Despite having antiferro-magnetic order, BiFeO3 (BFO) has nevertheless been a key material in this quest due to excel-lent ferroelectric properties at room temperature. We studied a superlattice composed of 8 repetitions of 6 unit cells of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) grown on 5 unit cells of BFO. Significant net uncompensated magnetization in BFO is demonstrated using polarized neutron reflectometry in an insulating superlattice. Remarkably, the magnetization enables magnetic field to change the dielectric properties of the superlattice, which we cite as an example of synthetic magnetoelectric coupling. Importantly, this controlled creation of magnetic moment in BFO suggests a much needed path forward for the design and implementation of integrated oxide devices for next generation magnetoelectric data storage platforms.

Abstract:Although the magnetoelectric effects - the mutual control of electric polarization by magnetic fields and magnetism by electric fields, have been intensively studied in a large number of inorganic compounds and heterostructures, they have been rarely observed in organic materials. Here we demonstrate magnetoelectric coupling in a metal-organic framework [(CH3)2NH2]Mn(HCOO)3 which exhibits an order-disorder type of ferroelectricity below 185 K. The magnetic susceptibility starts to deviate from the Curie-Weiss law at the paraelectric-ferroelectric transition temperature, suggesting an enhancement of short-range magnetic correlation in the ferroelectric state. Electron spin resonance study further confirms that the magnetic state indeed changes following the ferroelectric phase transition. Inversely, the ferroelectric polarization can be improved by applying high magnetic fields. We interpret the magnetoelectric coupling in the paramagnetic state in the metal-organic framework as a consequence of the magnetoelastic effect that modifies both the superexchange interaction and the hydrogen bonding.

Abstract: The coexistence and coupling of the electric and magnetic order parameters can provide a novel platform to probe magne-toelectric effects in multiferroics. The potential applications of magnetoelectric coupling on future high-density, high-speed and low-energy-cost electronic devices stimulate material scientists and condense matter physicists to revisit multiferroic systems over the past decades. Owing to the high ferroelectric and Néel transition temperatures, BiFeO3 (BFO) appears to be one of the most promising candidates in the on-chip integrated magnetoelectronic devices and attracts people’s interests since 1960s. Especially, the appearance of high-quality BFO epitaxial thin films in 2003 has triggered the study of its intrinsic properties and physics behind. This article re-views the BFO research history and focuses on the cutting-edge achievements in BFO-related projects in the past decade. We mainly introduce the emerging physical phenomena from the aspects of crystalline structures, electrical/magnetic behaviors and magnetoelec-tric coupling in this multiferroic BFO, accompanying with a brief outlook in the conclusion.

Abstract:Magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature in multiferroic materials, such as BiFeO 3 , is one of the leading candidates to develop low-power spintronics and emerging memory technologies. Although extensive research activity has been devoted recently to exploring the physical properties, especially focusing on ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetism in chemically modified BiFeO 3 , a concrete understanding of the magnetoelectric coupling is yet to be fulfilled. We have discovered that La substitutions at the Bi-site lead to a progressive increase in the degeneracy of the potential energy landscape of the BiFeO 3 system exemplified by a rotation of the polar axis away from the 〈111〉 pc towards the 〈112〉 pc discretion. This is accompanied by corresponding rotation of the antiferromagnetic axis as well, thus maintaining the right-handed vectorial relationship between ferroelectric polarization, antiferromagnetic vector and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector. As a consequence, La-BiFeO 3 films exhibit a magnetoelectric coupling that is distinctly different from the undoped BiFeO 3 films.

Abstract:Ferromagnet/ferroelectric/normal-metal superlattices are proposed to realize the large room-temperature magnetoelectric effect. Spin-dependent electron screening is the fundamental mechanism at the microscopic level. We also predict an electric control of magnetization in this structure. The naturally broken inversion symmetry in our tricomponent structure introduces a magnetoelectric coupling energy of PM2. Such a magnetoelectric coupling effect is general in ferromagnet/ferroelectric heterostructures, independent of particular chemical or physical bonding, and will play an important role in the field of multiferroics.

Abstract:Magnetoelectrics and multiferroics present exciting opportunities for electric-field control of magnetism. However, there are few room-temperature ferromagnetic-ferroelectrics. Among the various types of multiferroics the bismuth ferrite system has received much attention primarily because both the ferroelectric and the antiferromagnetic orders are quite robust at room temperature. Here we demonstrate the emergence of an enhanced spontaneous magnetization in a strain-driven rhombohedral and super-tetragonal mixed phase of BiFeO 3 . Using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism-based photoemission electron microscopy coupled with macroscopic magnetic measurements, we find that the spontaneous magnetization of the rhombohedral phase is significantly enhanced above the canted antiferromagnetic moment in the bulk phase, as a consequence of a piezomagnetic coupling to the adjacent tetragonal-like phase and the epitaxial constraint. Reversible electric-field control and manipulation of this magnetic moment at room temperature is also shown.

Abstract:The magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic materials is promising for a wide range of applications, yet manipulating magnetic ordering by electric field proves elusive to obtain and difficult to control. In this paper, we explore the prospect of controlling magnetic ordering in misfit strained bismuth ferrite (BiFeO(3), BFO) films, combining theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, and experimental characterizations. Electric field induced transformation from a tetragonal phase to a distorted rhombohedral one in strain engineered BFO films has been identified by thermodynamic analysis, and realized by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) experiment. By breaking the rotational symmetry of a tip-induced electric field as suggested by phase field simulation, the morphology of distorted rhombohedral variants has been delicately controlled and regulated. Such capabilities enable nanoscale control of magnetoelectric coupling in strain engineered BFO films that is difficult to achieve otherwise, as demonstrated by phase field simulations.

Abstract:A short review of recent progress in the field of multiferroic thin films and heterostructures is given. We focus on the bismuth iron oxide system due to its desirable properties, namely high ferroelectric Curie temperature and antiferromagnetic Neel temperature. Epitaxial growth of this model system in various crystallographic orientations has conclusively demonstrated the large ferroelectric polarization in this system. Piezoforce microscopy reveal a complex domain structure, especially on ( 100) SrTiO3 substrates. Electrical switching experiments show the co-existence of 71 degrees, 109 degrees and 180 degrees domain switching mechanisms in such films. Preliminary work has shown promise for electrically controllable exchange bias in ferromagnet - multiferroic heterostructures.

Abstract:Magnetism and ferroelectricity are essential to many forms of current technology, and the quest for multiferroic materials, where these two phenomena are intimately coupled, is of great technological and fundamental importance. Ferroelectricity and magnetism tend to be mutually exclusive and interact weakly with each other when they coexist. The exciting new development is the discovery that even a weak magnetoelectric interaction can lead to spectacular cross-coupling effects when it induces electric polarization in a magnetically ordered state. Such magnetic ferroelectricity, showing an unprecedented sensitivity to ap plied magnetic fields, occurs in 'frustrated magnets' with competing interactions between spins and complex magnetic orders. We summarize key experimental findings and the current theoretical understanding of these phenomena, which have great potential for tuneable multifunctional devices.

Abstract:Abstract Magnetically induced ferroelectrics exhibit rigidly coupled magnetic and electric order. The ordering temperatures and spontaneous polarization of these multiferroics are notoriously low, however. Both properties can be much larger if magnetic and ferroelectric order occur independently, but the cost of this independence is that pronounced magnetoelectric interaction is no longer obvious. Using spatially resolved images of domains and density-functional theory, we show that in multiferroics with separately emerging magnetic and ferroelectric order, the microscopic magnetoelectric coupling can be intrinsically strong even though the macroscopic leading-order magnetoelectric effect is forbidden by symmetry. We show, taking hexagonal ErMnO 3 as an example, that a strong bulk coupling between the ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic order is realized because the structural distortions that lead to the ferroelectric polarization also break the balance of the competing superexchange contributions. We observe the manifestation of this coupling in uncommon types of topological defects like magnetoelectric domain walls and vortex-like singularities.

Abstract:Manipulating ferroic orders and realizing their coupling in multiferroics at room temperature are promising for designing future multifunctional devices. Single external stimulation has been extensively proved to demonstrate the ability of ferroelastic switching in multiferroic oxides, which is crucial to bridge the ferroelectricity and magnetism. However, it is still challenging to directly realize multi‐field driven magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic oxides as potential multifunctional electrical devices. Here we show novel magneto‐electric‐optical coupling in multiferroic BiFeO3‐based thin films at room temperature mediated by deterministic ferroelastic switching using piezoresponse/magnetic force microscopy and aberration‐corrected transmission electron microscopy. Reversible photoinduced ferroelastic switching exhibiting magnetoelectric responses is confirmed in BiFeO3‐based films, which works at flexible strain states. This work directly demonstrates the room temperature magneto‐electric‐optical coupling in multiferroic films, which provides a framework for designing potential multi‐field driven magnetoelectric devices such as energy conservation memories. Abstract:Magnetoelectric multiferroic materials, particularly with the perovskite structure, are receiving a lot of attention because of their inherent coupling between electrical polarization and magnetic ordering. However, very few types of direct coupling between polarization and magnetization are known, and it is unclear whether they can be useful to the design of novel spintronic devices exploiting the control of magnetization by electric fields. For instance, the typical bi-quadratic coupling only allows to change the magnitude of the magnetization by an electric field, but it does not permit an electric-field-induced switching of the magnetization. Similarly, the so-called Lifshitz invariants allow an electric-field control of complicated magnetic orderings, but not of the magnetization. Here, we report the discovery of novel direct couplings between polarization and magnetization in epitaxial perovskite films, via the use of first-principles methods and the development of an original Landau-type phenomenological theory. Our results feature penta-linear interactions involving the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic vectors as well as the polar distortions and oxygen octahedral tilting, and permit a number of striking effects. Examples include a continuous electric-field control of the magnetization magnitude and sign, and the discrete switching of the magnetization magnitude. Thus, the high-order, penta-linear couplings demonstrated in this work may open new paths towards novel magneto-electric effects, as well as, spintronic and magnonic devices.
Ferroelectric Solitons Crafted in Epitaxial Bismuth Ferrite Superlattices

Abstract:In ferroelectrics, complex interactions among various degrees of freedom enable the condensation of topologically protected polarization textures. Known as ferroelectric solitons, these particle-like structures represent a new class of materials with promise for beyond CMOS technologies due to their ultrafine size and sensitivity to external stimuli. Such polarization textures have scarcely been reported in multiferroics. Here, we report a range of soliton topologies in bismuth ferrite strontium titanate superlattices. High-resolution piezoresponse force microscopy and Cs-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy reveal a zoo of topologies, and polarization displacement mapping of planar specimens reveals center-convergent and divergent topological defects as small as 3 nm. Phase field simulations verify that some of these topologies can be classed as bimerons, with a topological charge of plus and minus one, and first-principles-based effective Hamiltonian computations show that the co-existence of such structures can lead to non-integer topological charges, a first observation in a BiFeO3-based system. Our results open new opportunities in multiferroic topotronics.

Abstract:Multiferroics are attracting increasing interest and provoking much research activity driven by the profound physics of these materials, the coexistence and coupling of ferroelectric and magnetic orders, and the potential applications in novel multifunctional devices such as sensors, transducers, memories and spintronics. Multiferroic magnetoelectric (ME) composite systems, such as ferromagnetic–ferroelectric heterostructures, which offer a novel route for integrating ferroelectric and ferromagnetism, have been widely studied in recent years. In these ME composite systems, ME coupling is strain-mediated, that is, the strain induced in one component, either by magnetostriction in the ferromagnetic or by the piezoelectric effect in the ferroelectric, is transferred to the other component, altering the polarization or magnetization. This article reviews the magnetic-field control of electric polarization and its converse effect, electric-field control of magnetization, in multiferroic ME composite nanostructures. The review focuses on three kinds of ME nanostructures: vertical heterostructures, horizontal heterostructures and particulate nanocomposite films. Theoretical approaches, such as Green’s function methods, the phase field model and first-principles methods, have been used to simulate and predict the ME coupling effect in such nanostructures. Herein we briefly describe the potential applications of the ME nanostructured composites using representative examples, and outline the challenges and promising future for this field.

Abstract:Multiferroic heterostructures can be synthesized by integrating monolithic ferroelectric and magnetic materials with interfacial coupling between electric polarization and magnetization, through the exchange of elastic, electric, and magnetic energy. Although the nature of the interfaces remains to be unraveled, such cross coupling can be utilized to manipulate the magnetization (or polarization) with an electric (or magnetic) field, known as a converse (or direct) magnetoelectric effect. It can be exploited to significantly improve the performance of or/and add new functionalities to many existing or emerging devices such as memory devices, tunable microwave devices, sensors, etc. The exciting technological potential, along with the rich physical phenomena at the interface, has sparked intensive research on multiferroic heterostructures for more than a decade. Here, we summarize the most recent progresses in the fundamental principles and potential applications of the interface-based magnetoelectric effect in multiferroic heterostructures, and present our perspectives on some key issues that require further study in order to realize their practical device applications.
