Abstract:The rapidly increasing production and application of graphene oxide (GO) calls for much-needed attention to aspects related to the environmental implications of this unique nanomaterial. To date, very little is known about the transformation of GO when exposed to electromagnetic radiation at different wavelengths, which can occur in natural water systems. This study explored the changes in the physicochemical properties of GO when exposed to the UV and visible wavelength ranges of simulated solar light. Irradiation, especially under UV light, led to remarkable changes in the surface oxygen (O)-functionalities of GO, and cleavage of GO's graphitic bond. The carbon/oxygen (C/O) ratio of GO increased by 41% and 31% after irradiation with simulated solar light and UV irradiation, respectively. Visible light also changed the morphology of GO, but the C/O ratio only increased by 5.5%. The formation of hydroxyl radicals (˙OH), superoxide (O2˙−) and singlet oxygen (1O2) by GO was observed during irradiation with both UV and visible lights, but the proportions were different. 1O2 was primarily formed during visible light irradiation, while O2˙− and ˙OH were mostly formed under UV light. ˙OH hydroxylated GO, which mainly resulted in the decomposition of GO. The changes in O-containing functional groups on GO by irradiation influenced the colloidal stability of GO in aqueous media, but the physical wrinkle on GO surface may strongly affect its interactions with other organic materials.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) derivatives have popular applied in new materials and energy areas. Wastewater containing graphene oxide particles has to be treated due to biological hazards of the particles. Experimental investigation of radical reaction of the particles in water would suggest useful information to develop new effective methods for treating the GO wastewater. In this paper, a series of experiments were carried out for investigating effects of hydrogen and hydroxyl radicals on graphene oxide particles in water. Hydrogen radicals reduced soluble GO particles to generate photo-reduction GO, while ∙OH radicals oxidized soluble GO particles to give CO 2 and H 2 O. This paper provides useful information for developing effective methods for treating the GO wastewater.

Abstract:The rapidly increasing use of graphene oxide (GO) necessitates the immediate investigation of the environmental fate and effects of this unique material. To date, little is known about the transformation of GO in environmental media, especially in water and wastewater treatment systems. This study explored the changes in the physicochemical properties of GO that result from (photo)bromination by simulating the reactions experienced by GO during water and wastewater treatment. The surface oxygen functionalities of GO considerably changed upon treatment. Specifically, the COH and COOH groups of GO were lost under bromination, and the reduction of GO was enhanced under photobromination. GO sheets wrinkled and fragmented under bromination, and GO decomposition was enhanced by photobromination. The decreases in O/C ratio and GO decomposition in the presence of bromine were mainly attributed to the relatively high oxidation potential of bromine, which can oxidize carbon nanosheets. The oxidation of carbon nanosheets, in turn, resulted in the decomposition and formation of brominated disinfection by-products. Irradiation, hypobromous acid/hypobromite (HOBr/OBr−), and reactive radicals, such as OH, Br, BrO and Br2−, may all affect the physicochemical transformation of GO in the presence of bromine and simulated solar light. Bromination and photobromination drastically changed the aggregation and sedimentation behavior of GO. The findings of this study advance knowledge on the transformations of GO in water treatment systems and provide insight on the environmental fate of the transformation products of GO.

Abstract:The phototransformation and environmental implications of graphene oxide (GO) have been widely studied in order to understand its implications upon release into the environment. However, very little is known about the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by GO under solar irradiation. Currently there are no studies on the mechanism of ROS formation by GO or the amount of ROS catalyzed by the nanomaterials in the environment. In this study, we carefully investigated the different types and formation mechanisms of ROS generated by GO in the presence of simulated solar irradiation. The effect of GO's photoactivity on bisphenol A (BPA), a representative organic co-pollutant, was also studied. The conduction band electron (eaq−) of GO led to the formation of different ROS including OH, O2–, and 1O2. Among the three types of ROS investigated, O2– was the most abundant species generated during simulated solar irradiation of GO. BPA was degraded, mainly due to the oxidative potential of the valence band holes produced during solar irradiation of GO. This study advances understanding of the photoactivity of GO and its potential impact on other possible environmental co-pollutants.

Abstract:Increases in the production and applications of graphene oxide (GO), coupled with reports of its toxic effects, are raising concerns about its health and ecological risks. To better understand GO's fate and transport in aquatic environments, we investigated its reactivity with three major reactive oxygen species (ROS): HO˙, 1O2, and O2˙-. Second-order degradation rate constants were calculated on the loss of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and steady-state concentration of individual ROS species. Absolute second-order rate constants were determined by competition kinetics to be 6.24 × 104, 8.65 × 102, and 0.108 mg-C-1 L s-1 for HO˙, 1O2, and O2˙-, respectively. Photoreduced GO products had a similar reactivity to HO˙ as GO, with rate constants comparable to polycyclic aromatic compounds, but about two times higher than dissolved organic matter on a per carbon basis. Reaction with HO˙ resulted in decomposition of GO, with loss of color and formation of photoluminescent products. In contrast, reaction with 1O2 showed no effect on DOC, UV-vis spectra or particle size, while reaction with O2˙- slightly reduced GO. These results demonstrate that interactions with ROS will affect GO's persistence in water and should be considered in exposure assessment or environmental application of GO.

Abstract:In this study, a series of ZnO decorated rGO composites (x%) were successfully synthesized by the alkaline hydrothermal method. The crystal structure, surface morphology, and chemical property of x% were characterized by BET, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, and XPS, respectively. Amongst, 15% composite exhibited superior catalytic ozonation performance with an improvement of 68.4% on atrazine (ATZ) degradation efficiency (3 mins), more than 7.8 times of the pseudo-first-order rate constant compared with single O 3 . The roles of O 3 and reactive oxygen species (ROSs) were confirmed and compared by the quenching and low-concentration probe experiments, suggesting that O 3 and OH played an important role for ATZ degradation, while the function of 1 O 2 and O 2 − can be neglected both in single O 3 and 15%/O 3 system, which was contrary to that of the quenching experiments. Besides, the exposures of O 3 and ROSs showed that 15% can facilitate the transformation process of 1 O 2 to OH in different conditions, and largely enhance the exposure of OH. The roles of electrons, Lewis acid sites, and oxygen vacancies of 15% in catalytic ozonation were identified as well, which offered us a new perspective to design a high-efficiency catalyst and may promote graphene-based metal oxides for practical pollutant elimination.

Abstract:The rapidly increasing and widespread use of graphene oxide (GO) calls for immediate attention on the environmental fate of this material. To date, very little is known about the environmental transformation of GO. This study explored the changes of physicochemical properties of GO from chlorination and chloramination, which simulated the reactions occurring in water and wastewater treatment systems. Significant changes of GO surface O-functionalities occurred and scrolling of graphene sheets (those of very large sizes) were observed upon the treatments. Chloroform, a byproduct from chlorination was also detected, indicating the ring-opening on the edge of GO nanosheets. The changes of GO surface O-functionalities were attributable to the oxidation of quinone groups of GO by chlorine or chloramine. The scrolling of large-sized GO sheets may be attributable to the destruction of benzene rings at the edge of the GO. The results of membrane filtration experiments and column transport experiments indicated that chlorination and chloramination enhanced the mobility and transport of GO, likely by increasing the colloidal stability and inhibiting the agglomeration of GO nanosheets. The findings of this study further underline the significant implications of GO transformation on the fate and transport of this new nanomaterial.

Abstract:Graphene Oxide (GO) is one of the common members of the graphene family owing to its unprecedented and unique properties. These properties attract researchers to use GO in several potential applications such as a transparent electrode in light-emitting diodes (LED), biosensors and solar cells, etc. In this work, GO was produced through the oxidation of graphite by potassium permanganate using modified Hummer’s method and this was followed by ozone treatment. The crystallographic structure, chemical properties, surface morphologies, and optical properties of before and after treatment of GO were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV- visible spectroscopy. The FTIR observation confirmed the formation of GO from graphite flakes. XRD results showed peak at11.6 ̊ with a different interlayer spacing of 0.7nm and 0.8nm for GO and ozone-treated graphene oxide (O- GO) respectively. While for both GO and O- GO all the peaks were at the same position. Further, SEM micrographs of GO exhibited the multilayered graphene oxide with variable thickness. While the rough surface of O- GO suggests the reduction of GO particle size due to ozonation. Ultraviolet-visible spectra of GO at 223.2 nm was noted which is attributed to atomic C- C bonds but O- GO exhibited the peak shift at 232.7 nm thereby suggesting a higher surface area.

Abstract:Graphene-based materials are subject to photochemical process when releasing into the environment. In this study, three kinds of graphene-based materials, graphene oxide (GO), soot and graphene (G), were selected to investigate their photoinduced changes of properties and the corresponding reasons. GO underwent reduction-dominant disproportionation, resulting in less oxygen-containing function groups (OFGs) and higher percentage of carbon-centered persistent free radicals (PFRs). Different kinds of soot particles all experienced self-oxidation, expressed as more OFGs, defects and carbon-centered PFRs adjacent to oxygen atom. Oxidative potential (OP) tested by DTT activity showed a decrease in GO but an increase in soot, agreeing with their changes of physicochemical properties. G remained almost unchanged in terms of both physicochemical properties and OP. Photoactivity measured by the productivity of photogenerated electron-hole pair and reactive oxygen species was responsible for above changes and correlated with the inner carbonaceous core. Carbonaceous core can behave as a photocatalyst to initiate photocatalytic reaction, and its oxidation degree (O/C ratio and OFGs content) determines the photoactivity. The relationship among the physicochemical properties, OP, photoactivity and inner microstructure found in this paper will help for better understanding of the environmental behavior and health effects of graphene-based materials.

Abstract:Abstract Although graphene oxide (GO) has been used in multidisciplinary areas due to its excellent physicochemical properties, its environmental behavior and fate are still largely unclear. In this study, batch experiments, spectroscopy analysis and theoretical calculations were addressed to promote a more comprehensive understanding toward the coagulation behavior of GO onto TiO 2 under various environmental conditions (pH, co-existing ions, temperature, etc.). The results indicated that neutral pH was beneficial to the removal of GO due to the electrostatic interaction. The presence of cations accelerated GO coagulation significantly owing to the influence of electrical double layer compression. On the contrary, the presence of anions improved the stability of GO primarily because of electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance. Results of XRD, FTIR and XPS analysis indicated that the coagulation of GO on TiO 2 was mainly dominated by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds, which were further evidenced by DFT calculations. The high binding energy further indicated the stability of GO + TiO 2 system, suggesting that TiO 2 can be used as an effective coagulant for the efficient elimination and coagulation of GO from aqueous solutions. These findings might likely lead to a better understanding of the migration and transformation of carbon nanomaterials in the natural environment.

Effect of graphene oxide on conformation and activity of catalase

Abstract:To explore the biocompatibility of graphene oxide (GO) with proteins, we investigated its effects on conformation and activity of catalase, by using molecular spectroscopic techniques such as UV–visible absorption, fluorescence, circular dichorism (CD) and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and conducting in vitro enzymatic activity assay. CD combined with FT-IR and UV–visible spectra measurements indicated that GO induced the decrease of α-helical content and the increase of β-sheet structure in catalase, resulting in the loosening and unfolding of the protein skeleton. The internal hydrophobic amino acids (mainly tryptophan) in the protein were exposed, and their characteristic fluorescence was distinctly quenched, according to synchronous fluorescence and fluorescence emission together with UV–visible spectra analyses. The results showed that the tertiary and secondary structure of catalase is changed by GO. The conformational changes of the protein were also found to show a dependence on concentration and time of GO treatment. Moreover, the activity assay indicated that catalase activity is inhibited by GO. The study demonstrated that GO could cause negative effects on proteins, and the biosafety of its application may worth further investigation.

Abstract:The interfacial region of the graphene oxide (GO)-water system is nonhomogenous due to the presence of two distinct domains: an oxygen-rich surface and a graphene-like region. The experimental vibrational sum-frequency generation (vSFG) spectra are distinctly different for the fully oxidized GO-water interface as compared to the reduced GO-water case. Computational investigations using ab initio molecular dynamics were performed to determine the molecular origins of the different spectroscopic features. The simulations were first validated by comparing the simulated vSFG spectra to those from the experiment, and the contributions to the spectra from different hydrogen bonding environments and interfacial water orientations were determined as a function of the oxidation level of the GO sheet. The ab initio simulations also revealed the reactive nature of the GO-water interface.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) sheets with controlled species of oxygen-containing groups are important for fabricating graphene materials with desired structures and properties. Here we report a water-addition modified Hummers method to prepare GO sheets with tunable amounts of hydroxyl and epoxide groups without destroying their structural integrity. This method is simple, effective, and efficient. It can be applied to the mass-production of GO with controlled amounts and species of oxygenated groups, and improve the yields of synthesizing high-quality GO at low temperatures.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) is a structural analog of graphene and contains numerous O-containing functional groups. As rapidly increasing production and usage of GO, it is inevitable to flow into the water and wastewater treatment system and finally oxidized by disinfectants to form DBPs. Meanwhile, as GO is a nano sized carbon material, it may also break the human digestion system when it was absorbed by human body. This study explored the DBP formation when only GO was present. Effects of Br- were also considered during the DBP formation. Both trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) were formed during the chlorination and chloramination procedure, but the total concentration of THMs was at least three times higher than that of HAAs. Irradiation can significantly enhance the DBP formation via the formation of radicals. The wrinkled appearance and decomposition of aromatic ring may both be effective on the DBP formation via chlorination or bromination. The findings of this study advance knowledge on the DBP formation of GO in water treatment systems and provide insight on the toxic effects of the transformation products of GO.

Abstract:The presence of unpaired electrons (radicals) due to structural defects is believed to contribute to the catalytic reactivity of carbon materials. Graphite oxide and graphene oxide (GO) consist of significant structural defects and hence are considered more reactive than graphite and graphene. However, the relationship between their radical content/reactivity and their physical and chemical structures remains unknown, which limits the fabrication of high efficiency carbon-based catalysts. In this work, we progressively oxidize graphite to achieve graphite oxide and GO with different levels of oxidation and different sizes. It is observed that a maximal radical content can be achieved on graphite oxide with a C/O ratio of ca. 3.0 and a thickness of around 50 nm. Such a graphite oxide contains about 45% of pi bonds and 38% of oxygenated bonds, respectively. Thinner or thicker sheets have lower radical contents due to over or insufficient oxidation, respectively. Single GO sheets with high radical contents can only be produced through a combination of oxidation and reduction. The catalytic activity of the graphite/graphene oxide for phenol degradation was found to be linearly correlated to their radical contents. The observations are significant for the advancement of carbon-based metal-free catalysis.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) has been used in the range of organic pollutants adsorption and degradation. It's important to improve the performance of GO in the treatment of organic pollutants. Here, we found that the organic pollutants were more efficiently removed in the catalytic degradation of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) after being pre-adsorbed with GO. The performance of GO in degrading organic pollutants firstly enhanced and then weakened as the treated temperature increases in the air. The adsorption ability of GO for organic pollutants and catalytic activity of H 2 O 2 were highest at 500 °C, which can be ascribed to the highest oxygen-containing functional groups and the lowest defects on GO after 500 °C treatment in the air. This finding will improve the understanding and application of GO in organic pollutants treatment.

Abstract:The contribution of oxidation debris (OD) to the acidity of graphene oxide (GO) was investigated in this study. With Na2CO3 as the titrator base, the Boehm titration results showed that the total acidity of GO in an aqueous solution decreased from 9.72 to 2.74 mmol g−1 after a thorough removal of OD and that the total acidity of OD was 26.45 mmol g−1. Thermogravimetric analyses showed that the mass ratios of OD and residual graphene sheets (named bwGO) were ∼26 % and ∼73 % of the whole pristine GO, respectively. Based on the quantitative relationships between the mass ratio and acid site density, it was concluded that the total acidity of GO was equal to the sum of the acidity from bwGO and the OD contained in GO. Under alkaline conditions, the splitting and stripping of OD was attributed to the combined effect of the cleavage of H-bonds by nucleophilic attack from OH- and the electrostatic repulsion due to the ionization of carboxylic acids, in which the former became dominant when the pH shifted to neutral and weakly acidic. This study provides an explanation for the origin of GO acidity in aqueous solutions and highlights the role of OD in the chemistry of GO.

Abstract:The presence of unpaired electrons (radicals) due to structural defects is believed to contribute to the catalytic reactivity of carbon materials. Graphite oxide and graphene oxide (GO) consist of significant structural defects and hence are considered more reactive than graphite and graphene. However, the relationship between their radical content/reactivity and their physical and chemical structures remains unknown, which limits the fabrication of high efficiency carbon-based catalysts. In this work, we progressively oxidize graphite to achieve graphite oxide and GO with different levels of oxidation and different sizes. It is observed that a maximal radical content can be achieved on graphite oxide with a C/O ratio of ca. 3.0 and a thickness of around 50 nm. Such a graphite oxide contains about 45% of pi bonds and 38% of oxygenated bonds, respectively. Thinner or thicker sheets have lower radical contents due to over or insufficient oxidation, respectively. Single GO sheets with high radical contents can only be produced through a combination of oxidation and reduction. The catalytic activity of the graphite/graphene oxide for phenol degradation was found to be linearly correlated to their radical contents. The observations are significant for the advancement of carbon-based metal-free catalysis.
