Abstract:AbstractThe electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) on metal‐free catalysts is an attractive alternative to the industrial Haber–Bosch process. However, the state‐of‐the‐art metal‐free electrocatalysts still suffer from low Faraday efficiencies and low ammonia yields. Herein, we present a molecular design strategy to develop a defective boron carbon nitride (BCN) catalyst with the abundant unsaturated B and N atoms as Lewis acid and base sites, which upgrades the catalyst from a single “Lewis acid catalysis” to “frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) catalysis.” 14N2/15N2 exchange experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that FLPs can adsorb an N2 molecule to form a six‐membered ring intermediate, which enables the cleavage of N2 via a pull–pull effect, thereby significantly reducing the energy barrier to −0.28 eV. Impressively, BCN achieves a high Faraday efficiency of 18.9 %, an ammonia yield of 20.9 μg h−1 mg−1cat., and long‐term durability.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of stable dinitrogen (N-2) molecules into value-added chemicals such as ammonia has been attracting substantial research interests recently, while the bottleneck of catalyst design exists in the rational synthesis of catalytic centers with efficient N-2 chemisorption and subsequent activation. In this work, we demonstrated a facile approach of doping carbon black with a trace amount of chlorine, which allowed for the enhancement of its nitrogen reduction capability. Structural characterizations revealed the successful doping of the chlorine element into the carbon framework, accompanied by the polarization of the surface charge density. The positively charged carbon sites behaved as good NRR catalytic centers, with a maximum ammonia production rate of 4.3 mu g h(-1) cm(-2) and a corresponding Faradaic efficiency of 7.2%, thus suggesting a potential approach for enhancing the nonmetal catalysts for electrochemical ammonia synthesis.

Abstract:The manuscript presents a significant advancement in the field of electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation by unveiling the role of fluorine coordination in tuning the activity of atomically dispersed iron-nitrogen (Fe-N 4 ) active sites within porous carbon (PC). The innovative approach employs chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to fabricate F-Fe-NC active sites, which, upon fluorination, modulate the electronic configuration of iron, enhancing nitrogen adsorption and activation. The F-Fe-NC catalyst demonstrated a remarkable enhancement in electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) performance, achieving an ammonia yield rate (R NH3 ) of 125.49 μg h −1 mg cat. −1 and a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 25.19 %. In-situ electrochemical mass spectrometry and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were utilized to dissect the NRR kinetics and elucidate the underlying reaction mechanism, identifying the potential-determining step. The study introduces a novel, high-performance catalyst for electrocatalytic NRR and provides a practical strategy for optimizing the active-site microenvironment, laying the groundwork for the future commercial application of electrocatalytic NRR processes.

Boosting Electrocatalytic N2 Reduction to NH3 on Β-Feooh by Fluorine Doping

Abstract:As the cheapest and one of the most abundant transition metals, Fe is not only involved in nitrogenases for biological N2 fixation but is also extensively utilized in the Haber-Bosch process for industrial-scale NH3 synthesis. However, the application of Fe-based electrocatalysts for ambient N2-to-NH3 conversion still requires exploration of effective strategies to boost the catalytic performances for simultaneously achieving a large NH3 yield and a high Faradaic efficiency (FE). Here, we report that the ambient electrocatalytic N2 reduction activity of a β-FeOOH nanorod can be greatly improved by fluorine doping. When tested at -0.60 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.5 M LiClO4, such a β-FeO(OH,F) nanorod obtains an optimal NH3 yield (42.38 μg h-1 mgcat.-1) and FE (9.02%), much higher than those of pristine β-FeOOH (10.01 μg h-1 mgcat.-1, 2.16%). Density functional theory calculations reveal that the enhancement in activity originates from the lower reaction energy barrier (0.24 eV) of the nanorod than that of β-FeOOH (0.59 eV).

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) is a sustainable alternative to the traditional Haber–Bosch process due to its eco‐friendly nature and capability of utilizing renewable energy. However, its low Faradic efficiency (FE), caused by the excessive adsorption and reduction of protons, has been regarded as the main challenge, which leads to low ammonia yield as well. Herein, a carbon‐supported iron electrocatalyst is reported, which is fabricated by low‐temperature (300 °C) potassium vapor reduction of FeF3‐intercalated graphite fluoride, for efficient electrochemical nitrogen reduction. The strategy enables the unique formation of exposed Fe nanoparticles uniformly anchored on graphene and in situ doped with fluorine heteroatoms. These specific features can alter the electronic configuration of the Fe nanoparticles, leading to strong surface polarization that boosts nitrogen absorption capability for eNRR, resulting in high FE (41.6%) and ammonia yield rate (53.3 μg h‐1 mg‐1) simultaneously. First‐principle calculation attributes this enhanced eNRR capability to more empty orbitals carried by the Fe atoms through the electron transfer with F dopant and substrate. As a versatile strategy for synthesizing various ultrafine and highly dispersed metal nanoparticles on the carbon support, this work might shed light on rational designing essential electrocatalysts with effective electronic structure manipulation. Exposed Fe nanoparticles are uniformly anchored on graphene and in situ doped with fluorine heteroatoms. These unique features can alter the electronic configuration of the Fe nanoparticles, leading to strong surface polarization that boosts nitrogen absorption capability for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction, resulting in high Faradaic efficiency (41.6%) and ammonia yield rate (53.3 μg h−1 mg−1) simultaneously.

Abstract:N-2 electroreduction into NH3 represents an attractive prospect for N-2 utilization. Nevertheless, this process suffers from low Faraday efficiency (FE) and yield rate for NH3. In this work, a highly efficient metal-free catalyst is developed by introducing F atoms into a 3D porous carbon framework (F-doped carbon) toward N-2 electroreduction. At -0.2 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), the F-doped carbon achieves the highest FE of 54.8% for NH3, which is 3.0 times as high as that (18.3%) of pristine carbon frameworks. Notably, at -0.3 V versus RHE, the yield rate of F-doped carbon for NH3 reaches 197.7 mu g(NH3) mg(cat.)(-1) h(-1). Such a value is more than one order of magnitude higher than those of other metal-free electrocatalysts under the near-ambient conditions for NH3 product to date. Mechanistic studies reveal that the improved performance in N-2 electroreduction for F-doped carbon originates from the enhanced binding strength of N-2 and the facilitated dissociation of N-2 into *N2H. F bonding to C atom creates a Lewis acid site due to the different electronegativity between the F and C atoms. As such, the repulsive interaction between the Lewis acid site and proton H suppresses the activity of H-2 evolution reaction, thus enhancing the selectivity of N-2 electroreduction into NH3.
Enhancing Nitrogen Electroreduction to Ammonia by Doping Chlorine on Reduced Graphene Oxide

Abstract:As one of the possible alternatives to the Haber–Bosch process, electrochemical ammonia synthesis has been attracting considerable interest in recent years. However, most electrocatalysts are confronted with the predicament of a low yield rate for ammonia production. In this study, we report the chlorine-doped reduced graphene oxide that can efficiently electroreduce nitrogen to ammonia. At an applied potential of −0.3 V (vs RHE), the chlorine-doped reduced graphene oxide attains a high NH3 yield of 70.9 μg h–1 mgcat–1 (2.84 μg h–1 cm–2) with a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 5.97%, which shows a considerable ammonia yield in terms of the metal-free carbonaceous material electrocatalysts. Experimental results indicate that the chlorine doping can be propitious to remarkably strengthen the nitrogen adsorption in the defect structure. Density functional theory calculations verify this result and further reveal that the adsorbed nitrogen is reduced through the associative distal pathway. These results come down to the appropriate electronegativity of chlorine, which can induce the electron redistribution of the adjacent carbon atoms, favoring the electroreduction of N2. Abstract:Electroreduction of CO2 based on metal-free carbon catalysts is an attractive approach for useful products. However, it remains great chemical challenge due to the unsatisfied activity and poor selectivity. Here, we report a successful case to greatly improve the CO2-to-CO conversion on carbon black (CB) and nitrogen-doped carbon black (N-CB). By introducing fluorine, the faradaic efficiency of CO was increased from 12.8% (CB) and 50.8% (N-CB) to 93.1% (nitrogen and fluorine co-doped carbon black, N,F-CB) at -0.7 V. A partial current density of 4.19 mA cm-2 remained durable about 23 h. The superiority of N,F-CB can be attributed to the high catalytic areas and abundant N active sites inspired by fluorine doping. Specifically, the fluorine precursor of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) firstly performs as nitrogen fixator, protecting more nitrogen from escaping during the carbonization treatment. The content of nitrogen sites is about 4.4 times higher than the N-CB. Meanwhile, PVDF as area extender significantly improves the catalytic area, the specific surface area and ECSA of N,F-CB are 8.7 and 6.9 times higher than that of CB. This work provides an insight that heteroatoms can manipulate the catalytic activity and selectivity through the catalytic area of carbon materials with more active sites.

Abstract:AbstractAmmonia, a key precursor for fertilizer production, convenient hydrogen carrier, and emerging clean fuel, plays a pivotal role in sustaining life on Earth. Currently, the main route for NH3 synthesis is by the heterogeneous catalytic Haber–Bosch process (N2+3 H2→2 NH3), which proceeds under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure with a very large carbon footprint. Herein we report that a pristine nitrogen‐doped nanoporous graphitic carbon membrane (NCM) can electrochemically convert N2 into NH3 in an acidic aqueous solution under ambient conditions. The Faradaic efficiency and rate of production of NH3 on the NCM electrode reach 5.2 % and 0.08 g m−2 h−1, respectively. Functionalization of the NCM with Au nanoparticles dramatically enhances these performance metrics to 22 % and 0.36 g m−2 h−1, respectively. As this system offers the potential to be scaled to industrial levels it is highly likely that it might displace the century‐old Haber–Bosch process.

Abstract:Demands for green ammonia production increase due to its application as a proton carrier, and recent achievements in electrochemical Li-mediated nitrogen reduction reactions (Li-NRRs) show promising reliability. Here, it is demonstrated that F-containing additives in the electrolyte improve ammonia production by modulating the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). It is suggested that the anionic additives with low lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels enhance efficiency by contributing to the formation of a conductive SEI incorporated with LiF. Specifically, as little as 0.3 wt.% of BF4 - additive to the electrolyte, the Faradaic efficiency (FE) for ammonia production is enhanced by over 15% compared to an additive-free electrolyte, achieving a high yield of 161 ± 3 nmol s-1 cm-2. The BF4 - additive exhibits advantages, with decreased overpotential and improved FE, compared to its use as the bulk electrolyte. The observation of the Li3N upper layer implies that active Li-NRR catalytic cycles are occurring on the outermost SEI, and density functional theory simulations propose that an SEI incorporated with LiF facilitates energy profiles for the protonation by adjusting the binding energies of the intermediates compared to bare copper. This study unlocks the potential of additives and offers insights into the SEIs for efficient Li-NRRs.

Abstract:Electrochemical NO-to-NH3 under ambient conditions could be a viable alternative having advantages in terms of energy consumption and exhaust gas recycling of NO, replacing a traditional ammonia synthesis method of the Haber–Bosch process. In synthesizing boron (B-) and nitrogen (N-) co-doped carbon nanotube (CNT) based gold (Au) catalysts, B-dopants elevate the conductivity of carbon nanotube by sp2 hybridization on graphene and implant B–N domains within the graphene layer, and result in facilitating the embedding amount of Au accompanied by high dispersibility with low particle size. Theoretical density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate that the electron cloud transmitted from B-dopant to the active site of Au induces the Lewis acidic site, and the O-distal pathway occurs following a spontaneous reaction. Increment of the electron-deficient B-doping area accompanied by N-defects and B–O edges retains the major valence state of Au as Auδ+, and suppresses hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by repulsing the hindrance of H⋆. This record exhibits the highest faradaic efficiency (FE) of 94.7

Abstract:A fluorine-tuned single-atom catalyst with an ultrathin nanosheet morphology (only ∼1.25 nm) and high Ni content of 5.92 wt% was fabricated by a polymer-assisted pyrolysis approach. The synthetic approach not only controls the establishment of the ultrathin nanosheet structure for achieving high surface communication, but also incorporates F dopants to manipulate the electronic structure of the metalloporphyrin-like active sites (Ni-N4). As a result, such catalyst with unique structural features exhibits a remarkable electrocatalytic performance for CO2-to-CO conversion with the Faradaic efficiency (FE) over 95% in a wide potential range and an outstanding CO evolution rate of 1146 mmol gcat–1 h–1 at –0.97 V vs. RHE. The in situ attenuated total reflection-infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) and theoretical calculations further demonstrate that the F-doping modulates the electron configuration of the central Ni-N4 sites and thereby reduces the energy barrier for CO2 activation, which is favorable to the generation of the key *COOH intermediate.

Abstract:NH 3 synthesis via the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) under ambient conditions has been regarded as a sustainable strategy for fertilizer production, hydrogen fuel storage, and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Electrochemical reduction reaction of nitrogen to ammonia has been widely investigated as a potential technology to overcome thermodynamic barrier of high-temperature and high-pressure needed for industrial Haber-Bosch process. The design of construction of heteroatoms (e.g., B, N, P, S) doped carbon materials have become a research focus as metal-free electrocatalysts owing to their good electrochemical stability and high electronic conductivity. N-doping carbon materials could induce the protonated pyridinic N and adjacent atomic vacancy site, which are favor of N 2 adsorption. Besides, on account of charge density difference, B-doping carbon materials could induce inhomogeneity for carbon to adsorb N 2 molecules. Compared with single heteroatom dopant, heteroatom co-doping could bring in charge redistribution of carbon, which can facilitate the chemisorption of N 2 molecules and following electron transfer. Herein, we present a metal-free B and N co-doped porous carbon nanofibers (B/N-CNF) fabricated by an electrospinning and calcination strategy. The FESEM image of B/N-CNF showed the typical morphology of the cross-linked carbon networks composed of nanofibers with a diameter of ~100 nm. The contents of B and N dopant for B/N-CNF were 29.9% and 27.6%, respectively. The N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms curve of B/N-CNF exhibited a high BET specific surface area of 748 m 2 g -1 and a mesopores structure with pore diameter of around 4 nm and volume of ~0.39 cm 3 g -1 . Benefitting from a high surface area and synergistic effect between B and N dopants, the B/N-CNF exhibited a high electrocatalytic activity for NRR in a basic electrolyte, achieving the highest FE of 13.2% at -0.5 V and the NH 3 yield rate of 32.5 μg h -1 mg -1 cat. at -0.7 V. Such a high NRR activity was superior to most of the previously reported B- or N- doped carbon materials. It was found that B atoms facilitated the cleavage of N≡N bonds, and the N atoms enhanced the electronic conductivity of CNF nanofibers. The B/N-CNF delivered superior catalytic activity for electrochemical NRR, featured by the highest FE of 13.2% at -0.5 V and NH 3 yield of 32.5 μg h -1 mg -1 cat. at -0.7 V in basic electrolytes. The high NRR performance could be attributed to the synergistic effect between B and N co-dopants. The FE value of B/N-CNF was almost the highest among all previously reported carbon-based materials with single N- or B-doping. Moreover, an electrolyzer with B/N-CNF as the cathode and commercial Ir/C as the anode was successfully fabricated to confirm the NRR activity of B/N-CNF driven by alkaline batteries and solar panels. The developed B/N-CNF presented in this work paves a promising pathway for rational design of highly efficient dual heteroatoms doped carbon materials for not only NRR, but other electrochemical energy conversion reactions.

Abstract:Ammonia, key precursor for fertilizer production, convenient hydrogen carrier and emerging clean fuel, plays a pivotal role in sustaining life on earth. Currently, the main route for NH3 synthesis is via the heterogeneous catalytic Haber-Bosch process (N2+3H2 - 2NH3), which proceeds under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure with a very large carbon footprint. Herein we report that a pristine nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphitic carbon membrane (NCM) can electrochemically convert N2 into NH3 in an aqueous acidic solution under ambient conditions. The Faradaic efficiency and rate of production of NH3 on the NCM electrode reach 5.2% and 0.08 g m-2 h-1, respectively. After functionalization of the NCM with Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) these performance metrics are dramatically enhanced to 22% and 0.36 g m-2 h-1, respectively. These efficiencies and rates for the production of NH3 at room temperature and atmospheric pressure are unprecedented. As this system offers the potential to be scaled to industrial proportions there is a high likelihood it might displace the century old Haber-Bosch process.
Tailoring the d‐Band Center of WS2 by Metal and Nonmetal Dual‐Doping for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction

Abstract:Fe, F‐doped WS2 nanosheet arrays are successfully synthesized on carbon cloth using a simple hydrothermal method and low‐temperature fluorination. Strikingly, the electronic structure and surface microenvironmental modifications tailor the d‐band center position to optimize the adsorption of reaction intermediates, endowing the Fe, F‐WS2 catalyst with superior activity in electrochemical nitrogen reduction reactions (Faraday efficiency: 22.42%, yield: 91.46 μg h−1 mgcat.−1), far superior to the corresponding counterparts. Tuning the adsorption energy of nitrogen intermediates and lowering the reaction energy barrier is essential to accelerate the kinetics of nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), yet remains a great challenge. Herein, the electronic structure of WS2 is tailored based on a metal and nonmetal dual‐doping strategy (denoted Fe, F‐WS2) to lower the d‐band center of W in order to optimize the adsorption of nitrogen intermediates. The obtained Fe, F‐WS2 nanosheet catalyst presents a high Faradic efficiency (FE) of 22.42% with a NH3 yield rate of 91.46 μg h−1 mgcat.−1. The in situ characterizations and DFT simulations consistently show the enhanced activity is attributed to the downshift of the d‐band center, which contributes to the rate‐determining step of the second protonation to form N2H2* key intermediates, thereby boosting the overall nitrogen electrocatalysis reaction kinetics. This work opens a new avenue to enhanced electrocatalysis by modulating the electronic structure and surrounding microenvironment of the catalytic metal centers.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction is garnering significant interest due to its potential applications in mitigating CO2 and producing fuel. However, the scaling up of related catalysis is still hindered by several challenges, including the cost of the catalytic materials, low selectivity, small current densities to maintain desirable selectivity. In this study, Fluorine (F) atoms were introduced into an N-doped carbon-supported single nickel (Ni) atom catalyst via facile polymer-assisted pyrolysis. This method not only maintains the high atom utilization efficiency of Ni in a cost-effective and sustainable manner but also effectively manipulates the electronic structure of the active Ni-N4 site through F doping. The catalyst has also been further optimized by controlling the F states, including convalent and semi-ionic states, by adjusting the fluorine sources involved. Consequently, this catalyst with unique structure exhibited comparable electrocatalytic performance for CO2-to-CO conversion, achieving a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of over 99% across a wide potential range and an exceptional CO evolution rate of 9.5 × 104 h-1 at -1.16 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). It also delivered a practical current of 400 mA cm-2 while maintaining more than 95% CO FE. Experimental analysis combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations have also shown that F-doping modifies the electron configuration at the central Ni-N4 sites. This modification lowers the energy barrier for CO2 activation, thereby facilitating the production of the crucial *COOH intermediate.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic N 2 reduction reaction (NRR) under ambient conditions is a green and sustainable method for ammonia (NH 3 ) synthesis, and the development of efficient electrocatalysts for NRR is a top priority. In recent years, LaFeO 3 has been widely used in the field of catalysis because of its high stability, low cost, and green advantages. Through strategies such as heteroatom doping and carbon loading, we can effectively increase the content of oxygen vacancies and improve the electrical conductivity of the material to produce composites with unique electronic structures and excellent catalytic properties. In the present work, we prepared single-atom doped LaFeO 3 /activated porous carbon composites (LFC/AC) for electrocatalytic NRR. The NH 3 yield and Faraday efficiency of LFC/AC were the highest at 23.876 μg h −1 mg −1 and 6.53% in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte solution , both of which were higher than those of LFC. A series of characterizations and tests have shown that LFC/AC has excellent stability, electrical conductivity, and electrocatalytic properties. The density flooding theory (DFT) simulations were performed to explore the main mechanisms to improve the NRR performance of the materials.
