Abstract:A novel fluorescent sensor (AQTF1) based on the N-(quinolin-8-yl) tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxamide was designed and synthesized. This new sensor demonstrated high selectivity for the Zn2+ without the interference from Cd2+. The detection limit of this probe was calculated to be 10.8nM for Zn2+. The in situ prepared AQTF1-Zn2+ complex was used for detection of H2PO4− and displayed good selectivity from the common anions. Furthermore, the AQTF1 displayed good ratiometric response for the relay recognition for Zn2+ and H2PO4−.

Abstract:Two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons bearing trimethylsilylethynyl groups were designed and synthesized as new colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probes for fluoride anion. Both probes exhibit high specific selectivity and sensitivity for F− compared to other anions. When F− is added to the solution of the probe, the trimethylsilyl substituents can be removed immediately, and the color of the solution changes from yellow to colorless under ambient light. Moreover, test papers based on the probes are prepared, which could be applied to detect F− in organic phase.

Abstract:A novel sensing platform is described that uses di-catechol functionalized luminogen cis-DiCat as scaffold coordinated with phenylboronic acid, which realizes the rapid and quantitative detection for fluoride ions with good sensitivity, selectivity and stability. Ratiometric fluorescence measurements show that the detection limit is as low as 0.044 mM, which has reached the standard value suggested by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Detailed sensing mechanism is elucidated via both experimental and theoretical approaches.

Abstract:Fluoride ion plays crucial roles in many biological, chemical, medical and environmental processes. Constructing a highly sensitive florescent probe for naked-eye detection F - is of particular importance but remains challenging. In this work, we developed a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probe of pyrrolopyrrole aza -BODIPY (PPAB)-based polymer ( P1 ) for recognizing F - . In presence of F - , P1 showed obvious color change from green to yellow with absorption maximum blueshift from 670 nm to 340 nm. The weak emission of 697 nm changed to strong orange fluorescence with appearance of new broad emission with maximum bands at 520 and 642 nm. P1 was capable of sensitively and selectively detecting F - with a low detection limit of 0.07 μM. The sensing mechanism revealed that B–N bond cleavage and following hydrolysis of P1 induced by F - was responsible for the distinct colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent signals. The results indicated that PPAB core was an efficient recognition unit for F - detection for the first time. Finally, P1 -loaded silicone or test paper could detect F - by naked-eye signals. The probe can be successfully applied in real water samples to detect F - concentration.

Abstract:We report on a novel colorimetric and fluorometric chemosensor for fluoride ions based on 4-(2-acryloyloxyethylamino)-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBDAE)-labeled polymers. Upon gradual addition of fluoride ions (F⁻), the green fluorescence emission of NBDAE moieties can be dramatically quenched, accompanied with the distinct colorimetric transition from green to yellow. NBDAE moieties are capable of selectively recognizing F⁻ ions via hydrogen-bonding (H-bonds) interactions at low F⁻ concentration and subjected to further deprotonation process at high F⁻ concentration. NBDAE-labeled polymers in organic solvents possess high selectivity and fluorescence "turn-off" characteristics toward the sensing of F⁻ ions with the detection limit down to ≈ 0.8 µM.

Abstract:A novel fluoride anion (F-) colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probe (AOP) based on perylene tetra-(alkoxycarbonyl) derivative was designed, synthesized and characterized. Probe AOP selectively detected F- with unique absorption and fluorescence changes, which were not observable for other halides and anions (Cl-, Br-, I -, AcO-, SO42-, and ClO4-). The system was studied by H-1 NMR, electrochemical, and density functional to determine the properties of the interaction between AOP and F-. Planar confor-mation and D-A type of AOP facilitated efficient intramolecular charge transfer, resulting in red shifts of absorption/emission spectrum and ratio fluorescent response. Abstract:Currently, there is a great need to develop methods for the selective detection of fluoride anions (F(-) ) owing to their toxicity in the environment and biological function in living systems. In this study, we developed a new fluorescent probe (probe 1) employing a Si-O bond as a highly selective recognition receptor for detecting F(-) via intramolecular charge transfer. Probe 1 could detect F(-) quantitatively using the turn-on fluorescence spectroscopy method with excellent sensitivity in the range of 4-38 μM and a detection limit of 0.26 μM; the detection time was < 17 min. We anticipate that probe 1 would be used widely to monitor F(-) in the environment. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:A novel fluoride (F-) calorimetric and fluorescent probe (P1) based on a core-extended perylene tetra-(alkoxycarbonyl) (PTAC) derivative was developed. The probe exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for distinguishing F- from other common anions through significant changes of the UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra. Job's plot analysis revealed that the stoichiometry of the P1-F- interaction is 1 : 1. The association constant between P1 and F- was estimated to be 9.7 x 10(2) M-1 and the detection limit of F- was about 0.97 RM. An approximately 76 nm red-shift in the absorption and fluorescent quenching response was observed when F - was associated with P1. The emission intensity (I-574 decreased linearly along with the F - concentration from 3 x 10(-5) M to 2 x 10(-4) M. The mechanism of intermolecular proton transfer (IPT) was deduced based on the changes in the absorption, fluorescence, electrochemistry, and H-1 NMR titration spectra. The density functional theory (DFT) theoretical results of the P1-F- complex are in good agreement with the experimental results. The rapid detection of F- ions in the solid state and living cells was also studied.

Abstract:A dual-channel fluoride anions probe has been synthesized from 4-hydroxy-1,8-Naphthalimide and t-butyldiphenylsilyl derivative. The probe presents selective coloration for fluoride anion that can be recognized by naked-eye. And it can quantitatively determine fluoride anion in aqueous and organic media. In MeCN/H2O (v/v, 50:50), the detection limit of the probe is found to be 0.35 mg L−1 which satisfied EPA's requirements. While density function theory and time-dependent density function theory calculations were conducted to rationalize the optical response of the probe. Furthermore, the biological application shows that it could be successfully employed as a selective fluoride probe in the fluorescence imaging of living cells.
Micellar nanoparticles of coil-rod-coil triblock copolymers for highly sensitive and ratiometric fluorescent detection of fluoride ions

Abstract:We report on the fabrication of a novel type of ratiometric fluorescent polymeric probes for fluoride ions (F-) based on self-assembled micellar nanoparticles of P(MMA-co-NBDAE)-b-PF-b-P-(MMA-co-NBDAE) coil-rod-coil triblock copolymer, where MMA, NBDAE, and PF are methyl methacrylate, 4-(2-acryloyloxyethylamino)-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole, and polyfluorene, respectively. Blue-emitting conjugated PF block and green-emitting NBDAE moieties with F- turn-off characteristics within the PMMA block serve as fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) donors and switchable acceptors, respectively. For coil rod coil triblock copolymer in a good solvent such as THF, the blue emission of PF block dominates due to unimolecularly dissolved state associated with ineffective FRET process. The addition of F- ions only leads to similar to 2.92-fold decrease of fluorescence intensity ratio, I-515/I-417, of characteristic NBDAE and PF emission bands. In acetone, the triblock copolymer spontaneously self-assembles into micelles possessing PF cores and NBDAE-labeled PMMA coronas. In the absence of F- ions, effective FRET processes between micellar cores and coronas occurs, resulting in prominently enhanced NBDAE emission. Upon addition of F- ions, the quenching of NBDAE emission bands leads to similar to 8.75-fold decrease in the emission intensity ratio, I-515/I-417, which is also accompanied by naked eye-discernible fluorometric transition from cyan to blue emissions and colorimetric transition from green to yellowish. At a micellar concentration of 0.1 g/L in acetone at 25 degrees C, the detection limit of F- ions can be down to similar to 4.78 mu M (similar to 0.09 ppm). This work presents a new example of polymeric micelles-based optical F probes and manifests that, upon proper structural design and optimization of spatial distribution of FRET donors and acceptors, self-assembled micelles of coil-rod-coil triblock copolymers serve as better ratiometric fluorescent F- ion sensors possessing visual detection capability, as compared to that of molecularly dissolved chains.

Abstract:Fluoride ions (F-) are one of the essential trace elements for the human body and are widely existed in nature. In this study, we present a novel fluorescent probe (YF-SZ-F) designed and synthesized for the specific detection of F-. The probe exhibits high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and low cytotoxicity, making it a promising tool for biomedical applications. Imaging experiments conducted on zebrafish and Arabidopsis roots demonstrate the probe's remarkable cellular permeability and biocompatibility, laying a solid foundation for its potential biomedical utility. Furthermore, the probe holds potential for practical applications in environmental monitoring and public health through its capability to detect fluoride ions in water samples and via mobile phone software. This multifaceted functionality underscores the broad applicability and significance of the fluorescent probe, not only in scientific research but also in real-world scenarios, contributing to the development of more convenient and precise methods for fluoride detection.

Abstract:The detection of fluoride anion (F−) has recently attracted much attention, because F− is highly relevant to health and environmental issues. A novel Y-shaped fluorophore with an imidazole ring core, (E,E′-4,4′-[(2,2′-bis(ethene-2,1-diyl)dibenzoate)-(2-(4-(methoxycarbonyl)phenyl)-1H-imidazole-4,5-diyl) (1), was synthesized and used as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for fluoride anion. Upon addition of fluoride anion, the emission color of 1 turned from green to brown under ambient conditions, owing to deprotonation of the imidazole core. Importantly, upon complexation with fluoride anion, an obvious variation in the maximum wavelength of the two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF peak) was observed from 490 to 565nm, indicating that 1 is an excellent ratiometric TPEF-sensor for fluoride anion.

Abstract:As an important inorganic chemical with wide applications and high toxicity, the detection of fluoride-containing products and environmental samples has gained the most interest. In this work, a ratiometric fluorescent probe (NIN2) is constructed with a triazole group as the new recognition site for the detection of F −. The synchronous fluorescence technology was introduced to obtain the well discrimination of two emission bands. The value of wavelength intervals (Δλ = λem. - λex.) is optimized to be set as 70 nm with the minimized overlap of two emission bands centered around 380 nm and 470 nm, respectively. In this way, NIN2 can detect F − in the region of 0–0.2 μM with a good linear relationship (R2 = 0.9989) and low LOD value (36 nM). Only F − can induce obvious ratiometric response (I470nm/I380nm) from 0.2 to 3.4 while the ratios of the samples containing other cations and anions are as low as the blank sample. For investigating the recognition mechanism of triazole, 1H, 13C and 19F NMR spectral technologies were used to verify the interaction between triazole and F −. Furthermore, the DFT calculation was also performed to discuss the electronic transition of NIN2 before and after interaction with F −. We believe this work provides a new recognition moiety for detecting F −.

Abstract:Two novel fluoride ion fluorescent probes (P1 and P2) containing perylene tetra-(alkoxycarbonyl) derivative (PTAC) and its copper chelate were designed and synthesized. The identification properties of the probes were studied by absorption and fluorescence methods. The results showed that the probes were highly selective and sensitive to fluoride ions. 1H NMR titration confirmed that the sensing mechanism involved the formation of H-bond between the O-H moiety and fluoride ions, and the coordination of copper ion could enhance the H-bond donor capacity of the receptor unit (O-H). The corresponding orbital electron distributions were calculated by density functional theory (DFT). In addition, fluoride ion can be easily detected by probe-coated Whatman filter paper without the need for expensive equipment. Until now, there have been few reports of such probes enhancing the capacity of the H-bond donor based on metal ion chelation. This study will contribute to the design and synthesis of novel sensitive perylene fluoride probes.

Abstract:The dimeric azulene boronate ester 1 was designed and synthesized as a potential chemosensor for fluoride ion. UV-Vis titration analysis shows that with the enhancement of fluoride equivalents, the absorption peaks have been decreasing at 408 and 434 nm, while the peak at 370 nm has been increasing remarkably. Job's plot proves that the formation of a 1:2 [1.2F]2(-) species is responsible for the observed absorbance enhancement in THE solution. Furthermore, this probe displays a quick response for fluoride ion and the color is from light green to yellow in solution, exhibiting a high selectivity and excellent stability. It is noted that a test paper for effective detection of fluoride has been prepared by using dimeric azulene boronate ester as a colorimetric chemosensor without any spectroscopic instrumentation. In addition, TD-DFT calculation has also been carried out in aqueous media for comparison.

Abstract:A new class of bisthiourea-functionalized molecular clips were designed and synthesized for anion recognition. Clip 1 showed excellent affinity to the biologically relevant fluoride ion in a 1:1 ratio as shown by UV-vis, H-1 and F-19 NMR studies. Moreover, the binding was accompanied with visually noticeable color changes, enabling the compound to act as a colorimetric fluoride sensor.

Abstract:Firstly,a monomerized fluorescence molecular 4-(2-acryloyloxy-ethylamino)-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole(NBDAE) was prepared with NBD-Cl(4-Chloro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole) as raw material.Then,well-defined water-soluble random copolymers,poly(Oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate-co-NBDAE)(P(OEGMA-co-NBDAE)),were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP),with ethylbutyl-2-bromoiso-butyrate(t-EBiB) as initiator,and CuBr/bpy as catalyst.The copolymers were characterized by 1H-NMR,GPC,UV-Vis,and fluorescence measurement.The results indicated that the well-defined hydrophilic copolymers were narrow molecular-weight distribution with good fluorescence performance.And the fluorescence quenching of the copolymers to fluoride ion was studied.It was observed that the fluorescence intensity of the polymers decreased with the increasing of the concentration of fluoride ion.When the concentration of fluoride ion increased to 100μL/cm2,the fluorescence intensity of the polymers decreased to 0.035 times of initial intensity(without fluoride ion) and almost completely quenched.This phenomenon of fluorescence quenching to specific ion provided a basis for trace concentration detection of ion.
