Abstract:A novel dodecanuclear Zr oxo cluster [Zr6O4(OH)(4) (HSCH2CH2COO)(12)](2) (ZrO-SH-10) has been constructed under the room temperature, followed by oxidation of the sulfhydryl group with H2O2 to achieve a bifunctional catalyst with Lewis acid and Bronsted acid sites. The characterization of catalysts indicated that {Zr6O4} cluster core can be stabilized with a shell of carboxylate ligands, and the resulting ZrO-SO3H was formed as a discrete molecular catalyst, exhibiting superior activity and recyclability for the cascade conversion of furfural to alkyl levulinate by the integration of transfer hydrogenation and alcoholysis in n-butanol. The yield of n-butyl levulinate can achieve as high as 91 % under the optimum conditions. Meanwhile, no leaching of the active species was found, which confirmed the structure of the Zr oxo cluster was air and moisture-stable. On the basis of the studies on the reaction kinetics and isotope tracking, the reaction mechanism was proposed accordingly.
Direct Grafting Synthesis of Bi-Functional Zr–Al-MWW Zeolites and Their Catalytic Characteristics in Lewis-Brønsted Cascade Reaction

Abstract:A series of Zr–Al-MWW zeolites with different Zr state and layer-stacking structure are successfully synthesized via direct grafting zirconocene dichloride onto the external silanols of three kinds of MWW zeolites, i.e. MCM-22 with multilayered structure, ITQ-2 (through layer delaminated route) and OL-MWW (by direct hydrothermal synthesis) with oligolayered structure. The structure, porosity and state of grafted Zr species are distinctly different among the three Zr–Al-MWW zeolites. Zr-OL-MWW possesses the highest content of single Zr atoms with an ideal micro-meso-macro pore system, while Zr-MCM-22 and Zr-ITQ-2 contain two kinds of Zr species (ZrO2 clusters and single Zr atoms) coexisting in various proportions. The high dispersion of single Zr atoms on OL-MWW can be assigned to the large amount of external silanols of OL-MWW. The as-prepared three bi-functional Zr–Al-MWW zeolites are used for the cascade Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley (MPV) reduction and etherification (ETH) reaction. Among them, Zr-OL-MWW shows dramatically higher conversion of cinnamaldehyde and yield of 1-cinnamyl 2-propyl ether than Zr-MCM-22 and Zr-ITQ-2, owing to the higher catalytic activity of Lewis acid centers from single Zr atoms, as well as more integrated framework Al sites as Brønsted acid centers with good accessibility. This study offers a simple and efficient strategy to construct Lewis-Brønsted acidic zeolites with exposed heteroatom sites and integrated framework structure, which will provide especial potential in the catalytic conversion of macromolecules.

Abstract:In the present study, an economic and environmentally friendly bi-functional catalyst, Zr-SBA-15, has been prepared to develop a single-step process for synthesis of methyl levulinate (MLA) directly from furfural (FAL) in near-critical methanol without added H2. The presence of Zr in SBA-15, the structure of the Zr-SBA-15 catalyst, and its physical properties have been determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption and desorption (N2-BET) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Zr-SBA-15 catalyst has high activity for the production of MLA and good reusability. A possible reaction pathway containing two possible reaction pathways during this single-step synthesis of MLA has been proposed: the FAL has been transformed to β-Methoxy-2-furanethanol (MFE) and 2-Furfuryl methyl ether first, which then have been converted to MLA, and the conversion of FAL to MFE has been much easier and faster than that to 2-FME, which may be the major reaction pathway. The SBA-15 has given high activity for the conversion of FAL to MFE, and the incorporation of Zr has converted the MFE to MLA efficiently. The reaction of FAL to MFE to MLA has been found to be the dominant reaction. Finally, the catalyst has shown good reusability for at least five times without any reduction in the catalytic activity.
Alkali-metal-ions Promoted Zr-Al-Beta Zeolite with High Selectivity and Resistance to Coking in the Conversion of Furfural Toward Furfural Alcohol

Abstract:Zirconium-substituted zeolites prepared by post-synthetic procedure have demonstrated excellent performance in the upgrading process of biomass platform compounds owing to the unique Lewis acid character. However, many pressing questions still surround these materials, especially relating to specific conversion, catalyst stability and substrate scalability. In the present study, a simple alkaline treatment to the Zr-Al-Beta zeolite in alcoholic solution of alkali metal hydroxide was conducted. The modification of alkali-metal ions on both Lewis acid sites and Bronsted acid sites in Zr-Al-Beta was evidenced by XPS and FT-IR spectroscopy (CO and pyridine). The untreated materials displayed poor product selectivity and high coke deposit in the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction of furfural and isopropanol; however, the treatment of alkali-metal ions promoted their catalytic performance with improved recalcitrance to deactivation and coking significantly. Both the type of alkali-metal ions and the concentration of alkaline solution influenced the catalytic performance, which were found to correlate to the acidity and textual properties. The optimum reaction result (97.3% yield of furfuryl alcohol at 99.6% conversion of furfural) can be obtained on 0.025 M-Na+Zr-Al-Beta with high tolerance to the furfural concentration. Abstract:Conversion of renewable compounds to versatile platform molecules over environmentally friendly heterogeneous catalysts is of increasing demand. Bifunctional Zr,Al-containing large-pore zeolites stand as active, selective and reusable solid catalysts for a one-pot cascade transformation of biomass-derived furfural to γ-valerolactone, a platform molecule opening the way to various valuable chemicals. However, the influence of zeolite structure type and the ratio between Al- and Zr-associated acid sites on the outcome of this catalytic reaction has not been fully elucidated. Here we have compared the performance of the most efficient large-pore zeolites USY and Beta with systematically varied Al/Zr ratios for the one-pot synthesis of γ-valerolactone from furfural using 2-propanol or 2-pentanol as reacting solvents. The optimization of the catalyst structure (USY) and chemical composition (Al/Zr = 0.6) enables to achieve the yield of targeted γ-valerolactone comparable to or even exceeding the values previously reported for homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysis (88% after 24 h at 120 °C). The remarkable catalytic performance of the optimized Zr-Al-USY catalyst was related to the balanced ratio between Zr- and Al-associated acid sites catalyzing different steps of the studied cascade reaction.

Abstract:Heteroatom-incorporated zeolite catalysts are critical for biomass utilization and feedstock valorization in green chemistry. Key features are adjustable acidity, high stability, and a tailored range of functionalities. However, an environmentally benign synthesis of zeolites with good crystallinity and especially with high levels of metal substitution into the lattice remains challenging. Here, we propose a mechanochemistry-based liquid-assisted method (MCLA) for Zr-incorporated Beta zeolites that is high yielding, facile and sustainable. Compared with the fluoride-mediated hydrothermal method, crystallization times were considerably shortened so that Si-Beta and Zr-Beta (Si/Zr 100) zeolites can be synthesized within 9 and 15 h, respectively. Using the MCLA route, Beta zeolites with Zr loading up to 10.4 wt% (Si/Zr 12.5) were obtained. The materials have excellent catalytic activity for Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reductions with much higher water tolerance compared to Zr-Beta prepared by the post-synthesis method. The hydrophobic nature of the MCLA-synthesized zeolites makes them particularly useful as catalysts for organic reactions.

Abstract:Herein, highly exposed Lewis acidity on hierarchical Zr-HSZ zeolite (Hollownest-Structured Zr-zeolite) have been firstly constructed by one-step rotating hydrothermal synthesis with the assistance of K+, which are characterized by various techniques. The addition of small amount of K+ ions (K/Si molar ratio of 0.07) into the synthetic reaction gel is found to be highly efficient for the crystallization of Zr-doping HSZ zeolite, in which K+ ions play important roles for the charge balance of reaction gel, promoting the formation of Zr-O-Si bonds and accelerating the crystallization process consequently. Thus-prepared materials own distinct weak acid property and contain purely Lewis acid sites, which are proven by ammonia-TPD and pyridine-FT-IR. Two types of zirconium species are detected by UV–vis and XPS characterizations, one of which is the isolated <math>>Zr=O</math>species (Zr4+open) in high dispersion on the surface of zeolite, the other is the tetrahedral species in the zeolite framework (Zr4+closed). The unique hollownest morphology of HSZ material with hierarchically porous structure constructed by intergrown MWW nanosheet crystals has no hindrance on the mass transfer and diffusion of substrate molecules, and provides enough reaction spaces for reactant molecules. Also, the high dispersion of Zr4+open species on the surface of HSZ material has endowed it with highly exposed Lewis acid sites, beneficial to the acid-catalyzed transformation. As expected, Zr-HSZ-K catalyst shows highly catalytic performance for the acid-catalyzed Prins condensation to nopol from β-pinene and paraformaldehyde, which achieved high conversion (93.2%) and selectivity (96.0%) with TON of 163.6, and exhibited highly recyclable stability. This work has highlighted one-step rota-construction of metal-doping HSZ zeolite with highly exposed catalytic active sites for the catalytic conversion of bulky organic molecules.

Abstract:Inferior diffusion capacity and insufficient acid density hinder the practical application of ZSM-48 zeolite . Finding a simple and practical strategy to simultaneously address these two defects remains a challenge. In response to this dilemma, we developed an unconventional seed-assisted synthesis strategy for Al-rich hierarchical ZSM-48 zeolite. This approach allows for achieving a broader range of silica to alumina ratio and accelerates the entire crystallization process through the selection of unconventional seeds. The synergy between the seed and organic template was demonstrated to play a pivotal role in facilitating nucleation. Direct evidence from 1 H- 29 Si CP MAS NMR , TG, and IR results demonstrates that hexamethonium ions (HM 2+ ) electrostatically adsorb at the defect sites on the seed, thereby promoting nucleation sites formation. Smaller seed crystals undergo more etching during the induction period, resulting in additional defects and enhanced nucleation ability. The obtained catalyst exhibits a diffusion time constant (Deff/L 2 ) nine times that of conventional ZSM-48 zeolite when using p -xylene as a probe molecule. In m -xylene isomerization reaction, Al-rich hierarchical ZSM-48 demonstrates excellent stability along with higher selectivity and yield for p -xylene compared to typical ZSM-5 catalysts. Remarkably, long-term testing of 1000 h yields over 22.5 % of p -xylene, indicating the potential of this catalyst as an alternative for xylene isomerization reaction. This work not only advances the practical application process of ZSM-48 catalyst but also provides valuable insights for optimizing other zeolites.

Abstract:A novel bifunctional catalyst that enables an efficient one-pot conversion of furfural into γ-valerolactone (GVL) has been developed by anchoring heteropolyacid (HPA) on Zr-Beta zeolite. The catalysts were prepared by a post-synthesis procedure, which consists of the dealumination of Al-Beta, incorporation of Zr into the beta framework through solid-state ion-exchange and impregnation of the HPA. Zr-Beta is used as a Lewis acid catalyst to catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of furfural and levulinic acid/ester using 2-propanol as a hydrogen donor. To deal with the inability of Zr-Beta to catalyze the hydrolytic ring-opening of furans toward GVL, phosphotungstic acid (HPW) and silicotungstic acid (HSiW) were introduced to the Zr-Beta as BrØnsted acid sites. The characterization of the catalysts using XRD, UV–vis and XPS as well as TPD of ammonia and FT-IR spectroscopy of the adsorbed pyridine revealed that the HPA/Zr-Beta possesses both isolated Lewis and BrØnsted acid sites. When they were applied to the one-pot cascade conversion of furfural, the initial activity of the HPA/Zr-Beta toward GVL production were 2–3 times greater than that for Zr-Beta due to the enhanced hydrolytic ring-opening of the furans promoted by the added BrØnsted acidity. Especially, HPW loaded Zr-Beta demonstrated a remarkable GVL yield of ∼70% at 433 K after 24 h due to its high thermal stability and stronger BrØnsted acidity, and its activity far surpasses that of the conventional Sn-Al-Beta zeolite (∼40%). Overall, this study demonstrates that an incorporation of HPA into Lewis acid Sn- or Zr-Beta zeolites is an effective strategy to create isolated Lewis and BrØnsted acid sites within a single catalyst, thereby allowing the selective cascade catalysis for the cost-effective production of high-value chemicals.

Abstract:This manuscript represents a comparative study of Lewis acid catalysis using heteroatom-substituted delaminated zeolites, which are synthesized using an approach that obviates the need for surfactants and sonication during exfoliation. The comparison involves heteroatom substitution into silanol nests of delaminated zeolites consisting of DZ-1 and deboronated UCB-4. Diffuse reflectance ultraviolet (DR-UV) spectroscopy demonstrates framework heteroatom sites, and the Lewis acidity of these sites is confirmed using infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine. The enhanced catalytic accessibility of these Lewis acid sites is confirmed when performing Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of substituted 2-adamantanones with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. Comparison of delaminated Sn-DZ-1 with three-dimensional Sn-Beta for this reaction shows that the delaminated zeolite is more active for bulkier ketone substrates. The role of the two-dimensional crystalline framework of the delaminated zeolite on catalysis is highlighted by comparing delaminated zeolites Sn-DZ-1 with Sn-UCB-4. The former exhibits a significantly higher activity for Baeyer-Villiger oxidation, yet when comparing Ti-DZ-1 with Ti-UCB-4, it is the latter that exhibits a significantly higher activity for olefin epoxidation with organic hydrogen peroxide, whereas both delaminated zeolites are more robust and selective in epoxidation catalysis compared with amorphous Ti/SiO2.
Fabrication of a ZIF-on-lamella-zeolite architecture as a highly efficient catalyst for aldol condensation

Abstract:Designing composite catalysts that harness the strengths of individual components while mitigating their limitations is a fascinating yet challenging task in catalyst engineering. In this study, we aimed to enhance the catalytic performance by anchoring ZIF-67 nanoparticles of precise sizes onto lamella Si-MWW zeolite surfaces through a stepwise regrowth process. Co ions were initially grafted onto the zeolite surface using ultrasonication, followed by a seed-assisted secondary growth method. Si-MWW proved to be the ideal zeolite support due to its thin layered structure, large external surface area and substantial lateral dimensions. The abundant Si-OH groups on its surface played a crucial role in securely binding Co ions, limiting size growth and preventing undesirable ZIF-67 aggregation. The resulting ZIF-67/MWW composite with finely dispersed nano-scale ZIF-67 particles exhibited a remarkable catalytic performance and stability in the aldol condensation reactions involving acetone and various aldehydes. This approach holds promise for designing MOF/zeolite composite catalysts.

Abstract:In methanol-to-propylene reaction, the catalytic performance of ZSM-5 zeolite is strongly related to the material textural properties and surface acidity. In this work, the regulation of framework Al distribution (origin of the active Brønsted acid sites) in high-silica hierarchically structured ZSM-5 zeolite has been realized by a boron-modification procedure. When the B/Al ratio of the gel compositions (Si/Al = 200) reaches 7 or 9, the resultant B7- and B9-HSZ materials possess the expected hierarchically micro/mesoporous structures and increased framework Al distribution in the narrow straight/sinusoidal channels of MFI-type zeolite, which have been confirmed by the complementary characterizations, i.e. XRD, N2 sorption isotherms, ICP-OES, SEM, TEM, 27Al MAS NMR and the probe reaction of 1-hexene cracking. As a result, compared to the unmodified sample B0-HSZ and sample B3-HSZ with lower B-doping amount in the gels, they demonstrate the improved target propylene selectivity (49.3% and 48.9%) and elongated catalyst lifetime (88 h and 91 h) in MTP reaction under the WHSV of 2.8 h−1.

Abstract:A hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite with an adjustable mesoporous size is required for many chemical processes including the biorefining of big biomass compounds. In this research, a simple and high-efficiency hard template method has been successfully developed by adopting carbon nanoparticles obtained from carbonation of polyethylene oxide and urea. The abundant −C–O–C– groups on the surface of carbon nanoparticles provide the high hydrophilicity (from −C–O–C– to −C–O–H) in the alkaline synthetic gel solution, which promotes the synthesis of hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite and the aluminum condensation in the silica framework to improve the Brønsted acidity. The as-synthesized hierarchical zeolites exhibited two sets of channel systems: micropores (∼0.55 nm) are from the MFI framework network, and mesopores (∼12.5 and ∼34.5 nm) result from carbon nanoparticles of 10–40 nm in size, respectively. The hierarchical ZSM-5 with minimized extraframework aluminum species showed catalytic performance with high ethanol conversion (100%) and high stability (lifetime above 30 h) in the ethanol to olefins conversion. Importantly, the diffusion efficiency in ZSM-5 with mesoporous size was remarkably improved, compared to the catalyst with mesoporous size ∼12.5 nm. As the benzylation of mesitylene with benzyl alcohol, the ZSM-5 (∼34.5 nm) sample showed the highest conversion in benzyl alcohol (82.0%) and selectivity in 2-benzyl-1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (74.3%).

Abstract:Bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts (HZ-ZrP) were prepared by using HZSM-5 as the carrier to support a zirconium phosphate (ZrP) active component for the one-pot value-added conversion of biomass-derived furfural (FAL). By changing the loading amount of ZrP, the ratio of Lewis to Brønsted acid (2.7–15.4) and the acid strength of the catalysts can be adjusted. HZ-ZrP-5 and HZ-ZrP-16 were selected for the production of different value-added chemicals, and a total yield of up to 93.8% (i-PL and GVL) and 64.2% (GVL) were obtained using isopropanol as the hydrogen donor under optimized conditions, respectively. Furthermore, stability and recyclability of the catalyst were also tested and showed no significant drop in total yield after recalcination. The catalysts have high activity (Ea = 27.05 ± 3.08 kJ mol–1), but the ring-opening reaction restricted the cascade reaction. In addition, a possible reaction pathway and mechanism for the FAL conversion were proposed.

Enhanced Lactide Yield in Catalytic Conversion of L-lactic Acid from Passivation of External Acidic Sites on Aluminosilicate Beta Zeolites by Coating Siliceous Beta Zeolite

Abstract:The development of efficient Beta zeolite for conversion of L-lactic acid (L-LA) to L,L-lactide (L-LT) is in urgent need but still remains challenging. Herein, we reported an enhancement of the L-LT yield by passivation of external acidic sites on aluminosilicate Beta zeolites by coating pure silica Beta (Al-Beta@Si-Beta). The passivation of external acidic sites was strongly evidenced by in situ 2,4,6-tritertbutylpyridine (TTBP) adsorption FT-IR spectra, where the external acidic sites of Al-Beta@Si-Beta were effectively covered. In the tests for conversion of L-LA to L-LT, the Al-Beta@Si-Beta exhibited much higher L-LT yield than commercial microporous Beta zeolite, which is reasonably attributed to that the passivation of external acidic sites of the Beta zeolite significantly decreases molecular weight of the reaction intermediates, favoring for reduction of coke formation. Furthermore, this strategy is extended to passivate mesoporous Beta zeolite (Al-Beta-meso@Si-Beta). As expected, the Al-Beta-meso@Si-Beta displayed higher L-LT yield than the Al-Beta@Si-Beta because the presence of mesoporosity in the zeolite catalyst is favorable for mass transfer in the conversion of L-LA to L-LT. The strategy for coating pure siliceous zeolite might offer a new opportunity to develop highly efficient zeolite catalysts for the production of L-LT in the future.

Abstract:Constructing hierarchical Zr-BEA zeolites via an alkali etching-free route is still of challenge. Here, we have prepared a hierarchical HR-Zr-BEA from a mesoporous Al-BEA which can be facilely synthesized using commercial chemicals as the structure-directing agent. The structure of HR-Zr-BEA was systematically characterized by XPS, XRD, DRIFTS, and UV–Vis DRS, and its acidic properties was tested by NH3-TPD and pyridine-adsorbed DRIFTS. We found that the hierarchical structure of HR-Zr-BEA could expose more amount of acid sites and then promote the selective conversion of xylose to the active intermediates, resulting in a higher yield of lactic acid (LaA) from xylose. Besides, HR-Zr-BEA also exhibited excellent reusability and substrate-generality.

Abstract:The selective formation of C–C bonds, coupled with effective removal of oxygen, plays a crucial role in the process of upgrading biomass-derived oxygenates into fuels and chemicals. However, co-feeding reactants with water is sometimes necessary to assist binding sites in catalytic reactions, thereby achieving desirable performance. Here, we report the design of a CeSnBeta catalyst featuring dual Lewis acidic sites for the efficient production of isobutene from acetone via C–C coupling followed by deoxygenation. By incorporating Ce species onto SnBeta, which was synthesized through liquid-phase grafting of dealuminated Beta, we created confined dual Lewis acidic centers within Beta zeolites. The cooperative action of Ce species and framework Sn sites within this confined environment enabled selective catalysis of the acetone-to-isobutene cascade reactions, showcasing enhanced stability even without the presence of water.

Abstract:The acid sites of zeolite are important local structures to control the products in the chemical conversion. However, it remains a great challenge to precisely design the structures of acid sites, since there are still lack the controllable methods to generate and identify them with a high resolution. Here, we use the lattice mismatch of the intergrown zeolite to enrich the inherent Lewis acid sites (LASs) at the interface of a mortise-tenon ZSM-5 catalyst (ZSM-5-MT) with a 90° intergrowth structure. ZSM-5-MT is formed by two perpendicular blocks that are atomically resolved by integrated differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (iDPC-STEM). It can be revealed by various methods that novel framework-associated Al (AlFR) LASs are generated in ZSM-5-MT. Combining the iDPC-STEM results with other characterizations, we demonstrate that the partial missing of O atoms at interfaces results in the formation of inherent AlFR LASs in ZSM-5-MT. As a result, the ZSM-5-MT catalyst shows a higher selectivity of propylene and butene than the single-crystal ZSM-5 in the steady conversion of methanol. These results provide an efficient strategy to design the Lewis acidity in zeolite catalysts for tailored functions via interface engineering.
