Abstract:Objective: Left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) is associated with coronary artery disease, and smoking has been one of the major risk factors for it. We are aimed to assess the effects of smoking on left ventricular systolic dysfunction, which may provide possible mechanics behind the adverse relationship between smoking and cardiovascular diseases. Design and method: We enrolled 34, 947 participants living in the administrative divisions directly under control of the central government throughout China during 2012 to 2015. A stratified multistage random sampling method will be used to select representative samples from the general population. A standardized questionnaire was developed to collect demographic and other factors, including education, occupation and lifestyle, such as smoking and alcohol consumption. We collected environmental data of daily temperature, available from collaborative public and governmental institutions. Linear regression models was used to estimate the smoking consumption associated left ventricular systolic dysfunction after controlling for relevant covariates. Results: There were significant correlations between the amount of smoking and cardiology dysfunction. Comparing those smoking less than 20 cigarettes, larger left ventricular end-systolic volume was observed among those having smoked more than 20 cigarettes. An average 0.7180mm (95%CI: 0.0349–1.4012) and 0.8104 mm (95%CI:0.3571–1.2637) increase in left ventricular end-systolic volume was showed in those smoking more than 20 cigarettes and 400 cigarettes, respectively. Furthermore, socioeconomic status may modify the effect, stronger association was showed in relatively low socioeconomic regions. Conclusions: Smoking habits fuel use was associated with decreased left ventricular systolic function. Low- socioeconomic status may modify the effect.
