Abstract:The fundamental connection among interface phenomena, flow characteristics and energy transport during the evaporation process is crucial. In this work, a combination of experimental measurements and numerical calculations is used to study the water evaporation and the induced thermal convection in a cylindrical pool at low pressures. The temperature axial and radial distributions of the liquid and vapor phases near the interface are experimentally measured at different working conditions, and corresponding simulations are performed to obtain the flow fields. Based on the results, it is found that the flow pattern in the liquid layer and the length of the thermal conduction path are important factors affecting the evaporation rate. The dominant convection within the liquid layer varies with the heating wall temperature. The existence of a temperature jump at the interface is confirmed, and its correlation equation with the heat flux in the vapor phase is fitted. Importantly, almost all the energy required for evaporation is provided by the liquid phase, and the energy balance cannot be satisfied by thermal conduction alone. The convective heat transfer in the liquid phase is even dominant in strong evaporation.
