Abstract:A new macrocyclic calix[4]arene-bis[(4-methyl-1,2-phenylene)-crown-6] (CalixBisMePhC) was synthesized. An extraction study of Cs(I), Na(I), K(I), Rb(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), Pd(II), and Ru(III) with CalixBisMePhC/CHCl3 was investigated by examining the effects of contact time, HNO3 concentration, and temperature. The results showed that due to the effective molecular recognition, CalixBisMePhC/CHCl3 had excellent extraction ability and high selectivity for Cs(I) over the tested metals except Rb(I). The maximum distribution ratio for Cs(I) was found at the HNO3 concentration of 4.4 mol.kg(-1). The composition of the extracted species of Cs(I) was determined to be CsNO3 center dot 0.5CalixBisMePhC center dot 0.5HNO(3) by a slope method. Some valuable parameters for the Cs(I) extraction were obtained. The results demonstrated that the CalixBisMePhC/CHCl3 extraction system is promising to partition Cs(I) from highly level liquid waste.

Abstract:A new supermolecular recognition agent named tetra - tert -butyl-calix[4]-bis[(4-methly-1,2-phenylene-crown-6] ( Tert ButylCalixC) was synthesized. Batchwise experiments of extraction of Na(I), K(I), Rb(I), Cs(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), Ru(III) and Fe(III) from aqueous solution with Tert ButylCalixC/ o -nitroanisole were carried out. Effects of HNO 3 concentration, contact time and temperature on the extraction behavior were examined. The equilibrium established within 30 min implied a fast extraction kinetics. The optimal operation temperature was 298 K. Stoichiometry of Tert ButylCalixC and Cs(I) by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry characterization revealed 1:1 molar ratio. It was observed that the extraction system of Tert ButylCalixC/ o -nitroanisole was effective for selective removal of Cs(I), showing remarkable separation performance.

Abstract:A neutral extractant, tetra(tert-butyl)-calix[4]bis[(4,4'-dimethyl-1,2-phenelyene)-crown-6] (TTCalixB6), was prepared. The extraction equilibrium of Cs(I), Na(I), K(I), and Rb(I) and some coexisting metals Sr(II), Ba(II), Fe(III), and Ru(III) with TTCalixB6 was investigated in the range of 0.42-6.0 M HNO3. The effects of two types of organic diluents o-nitroanisole, an electron donor, and chloroform, an electron acceptor, on the extraction of TTCalixB6 were examined. It showed a high extraction ability for Cs(I) in HNO3/o-nitroanisole over others in HNO3/chloroform. The association of TTCalixB6 with HNO3 and chloroform through hydrogen bonding was the reason why Cs(I) extraction decreased in HNO3/chloroform. The composition of Cs(I)-extracted species was a 1:1 type of the complex, CsNO3 center dot TTCalixB6, determined by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. More than 98% of Cs(I) alone with less than 5% of Rb(I) were extracted with TTCalixB6/o-nitroanisole based on a separation framework. The thermodynamic parameters Delta H degrees, Delta G degrees, and Delta S degrees and some fundamental chemical engineering data of TTCalixB6 extraction were obtained. TTCalixB6/o-nitroanisole is promising to apply in Cs(I) removal from a high-level liquid waste.

Abstract:Abstract Separation among rubidium and potassium ions from salt lake brines remains challenging. In this work, a typical room temperature ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-metyhlimidazaolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C 2 mim + ][NTf 2 – ]) was used as diluent and synergistic extractant, dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DCH18C6) was used as extractant to extract rubidium ions from brine solutions which contain high concentrations of potassium ions was investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the single extraction efficiency of rubidium ions was up 93.63%. The thermodynamic parameters of the rubidium ion extraction were obtained. Based on the slope analysis method, the extracted species in the organic phase were ascertained as 1:1 complex. UV-visible has been performed to investigate the ion concentration of ionic liquid before and after the interaction of metal ions and ligands. Rubidium ions in [Rb · DCH18C6] + complex were stripped by 2.5 mol · L –1 NH4NO 3 . The extraction system offers high efficiency, simplicity and environmentally friendly application prospect to separate rubidium from brine solutions.

The optimum acidity in the extraction of Cs(I) was 4.0 mol.kg(-1) HNO3. The extraction property and mechanism of Cs(I) were discussed. The composition of the extracted species of Cs(I) with NonCalix[4]C6 was determined as CsNO3 center dot NonCalix[4]C6. Valuable chemical engineering parameters in the extraction of Cs(I) were obtained. It is beneficial to effectively partition Cs(I) from highly active liquid waste with the NonCalix[4]C6/1-octanol extraction system.

Abstract:Based on the intermolecular modification of 1,3-[(2,4-diethylheptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4] arene (Calix[4]) with 4,4',(5')-di(t-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DBC), a hybridized macroporous silica-based supramolecular recognition material, Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P, was prepared. The agents were impregnated and immobilized into the pores of the SiO2-P particles support. The adsorption of Cs(I), Sr(II), and some typical coexistent metals onto Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P was investigated. The influence of contact time and HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.4-6.0 M was studied. Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P exhibited high adsorption ability and selectivity for Sr(II) and Cs(I) except for Rb(I) and BA(II). The simultaneous partitioning of Cs(I) and Sr(II) from a simulated highly active liquid waste was performed by Calix[4]@DBC/ SiO2-P packed column. They were effectively eluted with water and flowed into effluent along with Rb(I) and Ba(II), while others showed no adverse impact. Abstract:Abstract Application of 1-butyl-3-metyhlimidazaolium hexafluorophosphate ([C4mim][PF 6 ]), in the extraction of rubidium and cesium from brine solutions using 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane (18C6) as extractant was investigated. Parameters that affect the extraction including pH of aqueous phase, equilibration time, dosage of the ionic liquid, phase ratio, concentration of 18C6 were studied. Under the optimal conditions, the single extraction efficiency of rubidium ions and cesium ions were up 84.11% and 94.99%, respectively. The stripping of alkali metal ions from the loaded organic phase with different stripping agents and concentrations were also investigated. The initial value of the K/Cs and K/Rb ratios were 93.0 and 104.3, respectively, which have dropped 91.21% and 88.01%, respectively, after the extraction and stripping experiments. It was taken a big step in the separation and enrichment of cesium (rubidium) ion and potassium ion. The extraction mechanism was revealed most likely to be a cation exchange mode in this system.

Abstract:A macroporous silica-based 1,3-[(2,4-diethylheptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4]arene (Calix[4]arene-R14) supramolecular recognition polymeric composite, (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P, was synthesized. The synthesis was performed by impregnation and immobilization of Calix[4]arene-R14 and methyloctyl-2-dimethylbutanemide (MODB) molecules in the pores of a macroporous SiO2-P polymeric particle support with a mean diameter of 50 mu m. MODB was used to modify the Calix[4]arene-R14 through intermolecular interaction force. The static-state adsorption of sortie typical alkali metals and alkaline-earth metals such as Na(I), K(I), Cs(I), Rb(I), Sr(II), and Ba(II) onto (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P was investigated. The effects of contact time, HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.3-7.0 M, and temperature on the adsorption were examined. (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P exhibited strong adsorption ability and excellent selectivity for Cs(I) over all tested elements, which showed weak or almost no adsorption except for Rb(I). The adsorption onto (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P of the tested metals in HNO3 medium was exothermic. The thermodynamic parameters for the adsorptions of Cs(I) and Rb(I) were determined. It was found that, in 3.0 M HNO3, application of the (Calix[4] + MODB)/SiO2-P polymeric composite in the partitioning of Cs(I), one of the heat generators, from highly active liquid waste in the SPEC (strontium/cesium partitioning from HLW by extraction chromatography) process is promising.

Abstract:To separate Cs(I), a new silica-calix[4]biscrown hybrid material, 1,3-calix[4]arene-bis(naph-crown-6) (CalixBNaphC)@SiO2-P, was synthesized by impregnation in situ and immobilization of agent into the pores of the SiO2-P particles. The materials were characterized by SEM images, FT-IR spectra, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and Si-29 solid-state CP/MAS NMR The adsorption of Cs(I) and some typical metals onto CalixBNaphC@SiO2-P was investigated by examining the effect of contact time and HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.4-6.0 M. Enrichment and recovery of Cs(I) in batch experiments were performed by six adsorption and desorption cycles. The removal of Cs(I) was more than 99.1%. Based on the batch results, the chromatographic separation of Cs(I) from 3.0 M HNO3 was conducted by CalixBNaphC@SiO2-P packed column. The effective separation of Cs(I) was achieved utilizing 3.0 M HNO3 and water as eluents. Abstract:The complexation mechanism of crown ether derivatives (18C6, 21C7, B18C6, B21C7) with metal ions (Li + , K + , Rb + , Cs + ) has been studied. Structural optimization was performed at the level of M06-2X/def2SVP. The results show that M + mainly interacts with oxygen atoms, and C-O bonds become longer after complexation. The interactions belong to the electrostatic attractive effect. The electrophilic substitution activity of crown ethers can be improved by benzene ring substituents, while the electrophilic complexing reaction activity decreases. 21C7 has the lowest electrostatic potential minimum, which is -96.0 kcal·mol -1 . The complex 21C7-Cs + and 21C7-Rb + are more stable than other 21C7 complexes. The binding energy and Gibbs free energy of 21C7-Cs + are -66.6 and -66.0 kcal·mol -1 , respectively. The results can provide theoretical guidance for the design of crown ethers using for the extraction of Rb + and Cs + from brines.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A macrocyclic 1,3-di(1-dodecyloxy)-2,4-crown-6-calix[4]arene (DodCalix[4]C6) was synthesized and characterized. The extraction of Cs(I) and more than 10 typical metals with DodCalix[4]C6/octanol in HNO3 medium was investigated. DodCalix[4]C6 exhibited strong extraction ability and high selectivity for Cs(I) over others except for Rb(I). The optimum acidity in Cs(I) extraction was 3.0 M HNO3. The Cs(I) separation from a simulated highly active liquid waste by five-stage countercurrent extraction was performed. The extraction efficiency of Cs(I) for five-stage extraction was greater than 99%. The effective partitioning of Cs(I) by DodCalix[4]C6/octanol through multistage countercurrent extraction was achieved.
Selective Adsorption of Rubidium onto a New 1,3-Alternate Calix[4]crown-5 Mesoporous Adsorbent with a Polar Carrier Containing Polyalkyl Ester

Abstract:A new mesoporous adsorbent iPCalixC5X containing 1,3-alternate calix[4]crown-5 derivative iPCalixC5 was prepared by vacuum suction. It was immobilized into the pores and channels of XAD-7, a polar carrier containing polyalkyl ester, by introduction and self-assembly. The uptake of Rb, Cs, K, and a total of 20 coexisting metals onto iPCalixC5X was investigated in the range of 0.4–6.0 M HNO3. The separation factor (SF) of Rb with Cs was 186.5 in 1.0 M HNO3 and 95.83 in 3.0 M HNO3. The Rb adsorption capacity was 0.5239 mM/g under the conditions of 298 K, 3.0 M HNO3, and a contact time of 120 min. The removal efficiency was greater than 99.6% for Rb and less than 0.22% for Cs. The Rb adsorption data fitted well with the Langmuir model, reflecting the monolayer adsorption mechanism. The thermodynamic parameters ΔH°, ΔG°, ΔS°, and some fundamental chemical engineering data of Rb adsorption were obtained. Efficient Rb removal from Cs-containing effluents by iPCalixC5X is promising.

Abstract:Cesium, one of the heat-emitting fission elements contained in high active liquid waste, deserved separation. Calix bis crown is a class of chemical compounds, promising in the cesium extraction. In this study, calix[4]- bis [(4- tert -butyl-1,2-phenylene)-crown-6] (CalixBBC for short) was synthesized by a multi-step scheme. The cesium extraction study was carried out using CalixBBC in two organic diluents such as chloroform and o -nitroanisole, which were used as electron-deficient and electron-rich surrogate dilutions, respectively. The effects of HNO 3 concentration, mixing time, temperature were investigated using a batch technique. Comparing with chloroform, o -nitroanisole was in favor of cesium extraction. Both extractions strongly relied on HNO 3 concentration in the range of 0.4–6.0 M. The pseudo-second-order model fitted the extractions well. Both extractions were spontaneous, exothermal processes. The foreigner metal ions showed little influence on the extraction. The stoichiometry of cesium and CalixBBC in the complex was 1:1.

Abstract:A complex of Cs+ with the calixcrown bis(2-propyloxy)calix[4]crown-6 (BPC6) and bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide (NTf2−), an anion of ionic liquid (IL), was crystallized in the interface region between n-octanol and water. The compound was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, ESI-MS, FT-IR, TGA and PXRD. Cs+ is coordinated with BPC6 by both the six oxygen atoms of the crown and the cation–π interactions, and with the anion NTf2− via one oxygen atom of the sulfonyl group. This single crystal explains the good extraction ability of BPC6 to Cs+ and reflects a coordinating interaction of NTf2− with the deficient complex [Cs·BPC6]+ during the extraction with an IL as diluent.
Efficient removal of caesium ions from aqueous solution using a calix crown ether in ionic liquids: mechanism and radiation effect.

Abstract:The removal of radioactive (137)Cs from nuclear waste is of great importance for both the environment and energy saving. Herein, we report a study on the removal of Cs(+) using a calix crown ether bis(2-propyloxy)calix[4]crown-6 (BPC6) in ionic liquids [C(n)mim][NTf(2)], where [C(n)mim](+) is 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium and [NTf(2)](-) is bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. The BPC6/[C(n)mim][NTf(2)] system is highly efficient in removing Cs(+) from aqueous solution, even at a low concentration of BPC6. HNO(3) and metal ions such as Na(+), Al(3+) in the aqueous phase interfered with the extraction of Cs(+) by competitive interaction with BPC6 and/or salting-out effect. UV analysis confirmed that the extraction of Cs(+) by the BPC6/[C(n)mim][NTf(2)] system involves a dual extraction mechanism, i.e., via exchange of BPC6 center dot Cs(+) complex or Cs(+) by [C(n)mim](+). Irradiation of [C(4)mim][NTf(2)] dramatically decreases Cs(+) partitioning in the ionic liquid phase by the competitive interaction of radiation-generated H(+) with BPC6, while irradiation of BPC6/[C(4)mim][NTf(2)] decreases Cs(+) partitioning more markedly due to the radiolysis of BPC6.
Preferential extraction of rubidium from high concentration impurity solution by solvent extraction and preparation of high-purity rubidium salts

Abstract:Rubidium has a wide range of application prospects in high-tech fields, which makes the extraction of rubidium resources of great significance. However, the similar properties among alkali metals render their separation from each other a considerable challenge. This study aims to recover rubidium from high concentration impurity solution via solvent extraction, and further purify and refine rubidium salt products. The organic phase consisted of the acidic extractant [4-tert-butyl-2-(α-methylbenzyl) phenol (t-BAMBP)] and xylene. The affecting parameters, such as contact time, extractant concentration, alkalinity, and phase ratio (O/A) were thoroughly investigated during the separation process. Rubidium could be completely extracted after the four-stage countercurrent extraction, accompanied by 18.84 % of K+ also entered the organic phase. Furthermore, deionized water was employed to remove impurity elements, such as contaminant potassium in the loaded organic phase. The scrubbing findings revealed that the scrubbing rate of K+ reached 99.03 % after five-stage countercurrent scrubbing at a phase ratio of 5:1. Most importantly, rubidium chloride solution was obtained after HCl stripping, which was further used to prepare high-purity rubidium chloride and rubidium carbonate products with a purity of 99.5 %. Eventually, this work provides a complete process for rubidium extraction and product preparation.

Extractive insights in the cesium ion partitioning with bis(2-propyloxy)-calix [4]crown-6 and dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 in ionic liquid-water biphasic systems

Abstract:We report the molecular dynamics studies on the interfacial behavior of cesium (Cs+) extraction by bis(2-propyloxy)calix [4]crown-6 (BPC6) and dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DCH18C6). For the benchmarking study, the phase separation for [BMIM][Tf2N]-water was validated. Thereafter, to understand the mechanism of complexation and the behavior of the crown ether ligand, crown ether (CE) molecules and Cs+NO3− ions were inserted randomly in the ionic liquid (IL)–water biphasic system. It was observed that the 2:1 Cs+-BPC6 complex formed during the simulation was more stable at the interface and was found to diffuse slowly to the IL side of the interface. On the contrary the 1:1 Cs+-DCH18C6 complex was found to be fully solvated in the bulk IL phase. The [BMIM]+ cation was found to partition to the aqueous phase and exchange with Cs+ ion in presence or absence of CE. The solubility, density plots and the snapshots of the [BMIM]+ cation at the IL–water interface indicates the dual cationic exchange. A comparison of the interfacial behavior of Cs+-BPC6 complex and Cs+-DCH18C6 complex in IL–water preformed interface system, depicted that the Cs+-BPC6 complex was stable at the interface till the end of the simulation. One the other hand, the uncomplexed DCH18C6 resided at the interface, while the Cs+ ion diffused to the bulk aqueous phase. The calculated interaction energy of Cs+-BPC6 was found to higher as compared to Cs+-DCH18C6. These results display the importance of the dual cationic exchange properties of IL and the extraction efficiency of CE for extraction of metal ions.

Abstract:The selective liquid-liquid extraction of alkali metal cations from the aqueous phase to the organic phase was carried out by using calix[4]crowns bearing two pendant groups with donor sites. It was found that calix[4]crown-4 and calix[4]crown-5 extractants with two pendant groups exhibit higher extraction efficiency than the parent compounds and possess obvious selectivity for Na+ and K+, respectively.
