Abstract:Self-assembly of nanocrystal (NC) building blocks into mesoscopic superstructures with well-defined symmetry and geometry is essential for creating new materials with rationally designed properties. Despite the tremendous progress in colloidal assembly, it remains a fundamental challenge to assemble isotropic spherical NCs into one-dimensional (1D) ordered superstructures. Here, we report a new and general methodology that utilizes molecular clusters to induce the anisotropic assembly of NCs in solution, yielding polymer-like, single-NC-wide linear chains comprising as many as ∼1000 close-packed NCs. This cluster-assisted assembly process is applicable to various metallic, semiconductor, and magnetic NCs of different sizes and shapes. Mechanistic investigation reveals that the solvent-induced association of clusters plays a key role in driving the anisotropic assembly of NCs. Our work opens a solution-based route for linearly assembling NCs and represents an important step toward the bottom-up construction of 1D ordered NC superstructures.

Abstract:The ability of nanoscopic materials to self-organize into large-scale assembly structures that exhibit unique collective properties has opened up new and exciting opportunities in the field of nanotechnology. Although earlier work on nanoscale self-assembly has focused on colloidal spherical nanocrystals as building blocks, there has been significant interest in recent years in the self-assembly of colloidal nanocrystals having well-defined facets or anisotropic shapes. In this review, particular attention is drawn to anisotropic one-dimensional (1D) nanocrystals, notably nanorods and nanowires, which can be arranged into a multitude of higher-order assembly structures. Different strategies have been developed to realize self-assembly of colloidal 1D nanocrystals and these are highlighted in the first part of this review. Self-assembly can take place (1) on substrates through evaporation control, external field facilitation and template use; (2) at interfaces, such as the liquid-liquid and the gas-liquid interface; and (3) in solutions via chemical bonding, depletion attraction forces and linker-mediated interactions. The choice of a self-assembly approach is pivotal to achieving the desired assembly configuration with properties that can be exploited for functional device applications. In the subsequent sections, the various assembly structures that have been created through 1D nanocrystal self-assembly are presented. These organized structures are broadly categorized into non-close-packed and closepacked configurations, and are further classified based on the different types of 1D nanocrystal alignment (side-by-side and end-to-end), orientation (horizontal and vertical) and ordering (nematic and smectic), and depending on the dimensionality of the structure (2D and 3D). The conditions under which different types of arrangements are achieved are also discussed.

Abstract:The assembly of nanocrystals into various ordered structures is key to their future applications. In this article, we describe the recent progresses in the assembly routes and mechanisms of the three-dimensional superlattices of nanocrystals. This review focuses on the techniques of nanocrystal assembly based on solvent evaporation of colloidal solutions, non-solvent diffusion, micelle-induced aggregation, hydrogen bonding linkage, electrostatic interactions, DNA base-pairing, external field-assistance, and oil-water interface templating. The existing challenges and future development of nanocrystals assembly are also discussed.

Abstract:Self-assembly processes, while promising for enabling the fabrication of complexly organized nanomaterials from nanoparticles, are often limited in creating structures with multiscale order. These limitations are due to difficulties in practically realizing the assembly processes required to achieve such complex organizations. For a long time, a hierarchical assembly attracted interest as a potentially powerful approach. However, due to the experimental limitations, intermediate-level structures are often heterogeneous in composition and structure, which significantly impacts the formation of large-scale organizations. Here, we introduce a two-stage assembly strategy: DNA origami frames scaffold a coordination of nanoparticles into designed 3D nanoclusters, and then these clusters are assembled into ordered lattices whose types are determined by the clusters' valence. Through modulating the nanocluster architectures and intercluster bindings, we demonstrate the successful formation of complexly organized nanoparticle crystals. The presented two-stage assembly method provides a powerful fabrication strategy for creating nanoparticle superlattices with prescribed unit cells.

Understanding the forces within self-assembly and the implications on constructing 3D supercrystals

Abstract:The assembly of nanocrystals into ordered structures, called supercrystals or superstructures, has become a pivotal frontier due to the numerous beneficial implications such as correlating atom arrangements in macroscopic crystals and tuning collective properties demanded by various applications. In this article, recent progress in the preparation of three-dimensional superlattices of nanocrystals is outlined with a particular emphasis on the driving forces and evolution routes beyond orderly assembling. Firstly, the leading or repulsive forces that internally and externally govern the formation of three-dimensional supercrystals are systematically sorted out and discussed with respect to their origins and functions for the three-dimensional self-organization. Then a synoptic introduction of commonly applied means for nanocrystal self-assembly is presented based on the growth scenarios, such as droplet evaporation and liquid/liquid interface concomitant with specific cases and detailed analyses. In the end, the existing challenge and perspective in this field are briefly highlighted.

Abstract:In the past decades, controlled assembly of nanocrystals (NCs) has been a topic of continuous interest. The tremendous interest in organizing NCs mainly stemmed from the potential applications of NCs in diverse areas, including chemical and biological sensing, energy storage and production, and optoelectronic devices. Recent advances at this frontier are also partially driven by the rapid development in the synthesis of relatively monodispersed NC building blocks with controlled size, shape, and composition [1, 2]. Compared to spherical NCs, one dimensional (1D) NCs, that is, nanorods (NRs) and nanowires (NWs), exhibit unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties due to their shape anisotropy [3, 4]. Taking Au NRs as an example, they exhibit localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and strong photothermal effect, which enable their broad applications in such areas as cancer imaging and therapy. The LSPR absorption of these NRs can be tailored in the range from visible to near-infrared wavelengths for specific applications by controlling the aspect ratio of NRs. To date, various methods have been developed for the organization of 1D NCs into functional structures. In particular, the bottom-up assembly approach offers a more robust, scalable, and cost-effective way to fabricate arrays of NCs in a controlled manner, compared to top-down techniques such as electron-beam and focused-ion beam lithography [5]. In this chapter, we have classified the current self-assembly methods into four major categories, namely templated assembly, field-driven assembly, assembly at interfaces, and ligand-guided assembly. The following section features the properties and applications of assemblies of 1D NCs. Finally, conclusion and outlook are presented in the last section.

Abstract:The self-assembly of ultrathin nanocrystals (UTNCs) into well-organized multidimensional superstructures is one of the key topics in material chemistry and physics. Highly ordered nanocrystal assemblies also known as superstructures or synthetic structures have remained a focus for researchers over the past few years due to synergy in their properties as compared to their components. Here, we aim to present the recent progress being made in this field with highlights of our research group endeavors in the engineering of self-assembled complex multidimensional superstructures of various inorganic materials, including polyoxometalates. The driving forces for the assembly process and its kinetics along with the potential applications associated with these unique ordered and spatially complex superstructures are also discussed.

Abstract:Even though different approaches have been developed to achieve various 1D assemblies of nanocrystals, few studies have been done on the assembly of crystallographically well-defined chalcogenide nanoclusters. Here, by using bifunctional organic ligands as the directional linker, a series of one-dimensional assemblies of semiconducting chalcogenide nanoclusters have been prepared and characterized. The synthetic method allows for the preparation of differently sized tetrahedral nanoclusters that are joined together with organic linkers of different length and rigidity. Multiple linking modes between nanoclusters and organic ligands are revealed in four different assemblies that also exhibit size-dependent optical properties.

Abstract:The exploitation of new methods to control material structure has historically been dominating the material science. The bottom-up self-assembly strategy by taking atom/molecule/ensembles in nanoscale as building blocks and crystallization as a driving force bring hope for material fabrication. DNA-grafted nanoparticle has emerged as a “programmable atom equivalent” and was employed for the assembly of hierarchically ordered three-dimensional superlattice with novel properties and studying the unknown assembly mechanism due to its programmability and versatility in the binding capabilities. In this review, we highlight the assembly strategies and rules of DNA-grafted three-dimensional superlattice, dynamic assembly by different driving factors, and discuss their future applications.

Abstract:Expanding the library of self-assembled superstructures provides insight into the behavior of atomic crystals and supports the development of materials with mesoscale order. Here we build upon recent findings of soft matter quasicrystals and report a quasicrystalline binary nanocrystal superlattice that exhibits correlations in the form of partial matching rules reducing tiling disorder. We determine a three-dimensional structure model through electron tomography and direct imaging of surface topography. The 12-fold rotational symmetry of the quasicrystal is broken in sub-layers, forming a random tiling of rectangles, large triangles, and small triangles with 6-fold symmetry. We analyze the geometry of the experimental tiling and discuss factors relevant for the stabilization of the quasicrystal. Our joint experimental-computational study demonstrates the power of nanocrystal superlattice engineering and further narrows the gap between the richness of crystal structures found with atoms and in soft matter assemblies.

Abstract:Directed assembly of nanocrystals from conventional templates suffers from poor control over the periodicity of the nanocrystal assembly, which is largely due to the fact that the template exists prior to the assembly and is not generally adaptive. Herein, small organic molecules (tris-amide triarylamines, TATA) are demonstrated as conceptual templates from self-assembly through noncovalent interactions. The as-formed supramolecular structures with terminated alkyl chains, resembling the structure of as-synthesized nanocrystals capped with alkyl chains, are able to interact with nanocrystals through van der Waals attractive forces, thereby enabling directed assembly of nanocrystals into ordered superlattices. Specifically, it is found that, as determined by the substituted alkyl chains of TATA, either H or J-aggregates of TATA can be achieved, which eventually produce several distinct supramolecular structures, from rods to spindles, to rings, and to spheres, serving as on-pathway intermediate that directs the assembly of nanocrystals into diverse nanocrystal superlattices. The approach described can be applicable to produce ordered nanocrystal assemblies of a wide range of nanocrystals, independent of size and shape and without ligand exchange process. Strikingly, a helical TATA stacking can direct assembly of binary nanocrystal mixtures into NaZn13 binary superhelix.

Abstract:Ordered self-assembled arrays or superstructures of nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted intense research interest due to their ability to translate valuable nanoscale properties to larger length scales. Numerous techniques have been explored to induce self-assembly into various superstructures. Here we investigated a simple kinetic approach to form self-assembled one-dimensional perovskite CsPbX3 (X: halides) nanocrystal arrays templated inside a pod shaped inert lead sulfate (PbSO4) scaffold. Both the solvent effects, and the self-assembly process and mechanism, are systematically studied based on a uniform procedure developed to generate CsPbX3 nanocrystal superlattices with different sizes and compositions. The formation of one-dimensional (1D) chains of NCs within a half-cylindrical pod of PbSO4 reflects a balance between solvophobicity and solvophilicity of the components. By reducing the size of NCs, we successfully realized 2D superlattices with two or three rows of close-packed CsPbBr3 NCs, in addition to single string-of-pearl type 1D assemblies. The superlattices can be assembled both inside and outside of the half-cylindrical shells by regulating the reaction conditions. The self-assembly behavior is reminiscent of the host-guest systems of organic molecular species where supramolecular recognition rules apply to give well-defined complexes. The current study opens a door for controlling self-assembled nanostructures of CsPbX3 NCs, and provides an attainable platform for future optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:In comparison to the previous lengthy approaches, we described a general and simple strategy for engineering the superlattice assembly of IV-VI semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) with tunable sizes and morphologies. Not only the well-studied spherical NCs but also some special-shaped NCs, such as the quasi-cubic, cubic, truncated octahedral, and octahedral, could self-assemble into well-ordered patterns, as demonstrated in PbS, PbSe, and PbTe. These results extended our proposed model about the configuration of ligand chains in the superlattice assembly. This powerful capability of assembling superlattices was dominated by a heat-treatment process, providing a significant and extensive direction in the engineering of morphology-tunable NC superlattices.

Abstract:Highly uniform Cu2S nanocrystals with controllable sizes and shapes (circular and elongated) have been synthesized through a novel water-oil interface confined reaction. They can self-assemble into highly ordered multilayer superlattices. By controlling the size and shape of building block nanocrystals, the packing symmetry of the superlattice can be engineered. For circular nanocrystals, both fcc and hcp multilayer superlattices are found in the sample. For elongated nanocrystals, they can also generate a close-packed layer and further stack into a multilayer superlattice. The dipole moment of the inner nanocrystals is useful for their stacking. This work provides a simple bottom-up approach to integrate nanocrystals, as well as to adjust the packing symmetry of the final superlattice, which may have potential applications for nanomaterials and nanodevices in the future.

Abstract:Bottom-up assembly of nanocrystals (NCs) into ordered arrays, or superlattices (SLs), is a promising route to design materials with new functionalities, but the degree of control over assembly into functional structures remains challenging. Using electrostatics, rather than density, to tune the interactions between semiconductor NCs, we watch self-assembly proceeding through a metastable liquid phase. We systematically investigate the phase behavior as a function of quench conditions in situ and in real time using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Through quantitative fitting to colloid, liquid, and SL models, we extract the time evolution of each phase and the system phase diagram, which we find to be consistent with short-range attractive interactions. Using the phase diagram's predictive power, we establish control of the self-assembly rate over three orders of magnitude, and identify one- and two-step self-assembly regimes, with only the latter implicating the metastable liquid as an intermediate. Importantly, the presence of the metastable liquid increases SL formation rates relative to the equivalent one-step pathway, and SL order counterintuitively increases with the rate, revealing a highly desirable and generalizable kinetic strategy to promote and enhance ordered assembly.
