Abstract:Hetero-structured TiO2 nanotree arrays on flurine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates were deposited by a two-step hydrothermal method, CdS/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (CdS/ZnS QDs) were deposited by a successive ionic layer absorption and reaction (SILAR) process. The TiO2 nanotree array is composed of a trunk-branch structure where the trunk is rutile TiO2 nanorod array and the branch is anatase TiO2 nanosheets standing on the trunk. Morphology, optical properties and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performances were investigated in detail. After the deposition of CdS/ZnS QDs, TiO2 nanotree array photoanode shows much better PEC performance compared to TiO2 nanorod array photoanode that sensitized nanotree array show a higher photocurrent desity (1.5 mA/cm(2)) at 1.0 V and almost 2-fold current density (0.29 mA/cm(2)) than sensitized nanorod array (1.0 mA/cm(2) and 0.15 mA/cm(2)) in the measurement of linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and transient photocurrent, respectively. This result is due to the enlarged surface specific area for more quantum dots loading, and also due to the rutile/anatase junctions formed on the boundary of trunks and branches, leading to an effective charge separating and transporting. It suggests that the hetero-structured TiO2 nanotree array is very promising to be applied in highly efficient photoanodes for energy devices. (C) 2016 The Electrochemical Society. In-situ route for the graphitized carbon/TiO2 composite photocatalysts with enhanced removal efficiency to emerging phenolic pollutants

Abstract:TiO2 is the most photoactive material because of its superstrong photooxidizing ability, and TiO2 photocatalysis has been widely applied in sustainable water treatment and environmental remediation. However, poor sunlight or visible-light harvesting efficiency and fast recombination rate of the photogenerated charge carriers severely limit the practical applications of TiO2. To overcome these problems, the present work demonstrates a facile in-situ co-condensation method combined with hydrothermal treatment to prepare a series of graphitized carbon/TiO2 composite photocatalysts, and anatase TiO2 phase and pi-pi-conjugated polycyclic aromatic carbon structure are created simultaneously. As-prepared TiO2/C composites exhibit remarkably high visible-light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of aqueous emerging phenolic pollutants, acetaminophen (APAP) and methylparaben (MPB), and apparent rate constant of the TiO2/C composite with carbon doping level of 10.3% for APAP and MPB removal is 7.6 and 2.8 times higher than that of bare TiO2, and 6.2 and 2.6 times higher than that of Degussa P25 TiO2. Based on the results of photoelectrochemical experiments, indirect chemical probe measurements, and ESR spectroscopy, it is verified that doping TiO2 with graphitized carbon is responsible for this enhanced photocatalytic activity, which renders the improved visible-light harvesting ability, the accelerated separation of the photogenerated charge carriers, and enlarged BET surface areas. Through analyzing the intermediates yielded in the photodegradation process, the pathway of visible-light photocatalytic degradation of APAP and MPB over the TiO2/C composite is proposed. Abstract:Developing new nanophotocatalysts and identifying their roles are highly attractive in environmental protection and energy utilization. Photoelectro-Fenton process is an environmentally friendly technology and has a wide application in the control of environmental pollutants. However, efficient nanophotocatalysts responsive to visible light are still few. In this work, we have successfully synthesized a uniformly dispersed α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanotubes hetero-nanostructure by electrochemical deposition method for the degradation of phenol. Compared with the separate α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles and TiO2 nanotubes, the composite α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanotubes electrodes were more effective in the photoelectro-Fenton degradation of phenol and a 100% removal efficiency of phenol was obtained after 60min treatment. The composite α-Fe2O3/TiO2 electrodes showed an enhanced absorbance in visible light region and had good stability to photoelectro-Fenton reactions. The role of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles in various Fenton-related processes were systematically investigated. The results indicate that α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanotubes are promising material for pollution prevention.
Single-crystalline Rutile TiO2 Nanorod Array on Flexible Ti Substrates for Efficient Photoelectrocatalytic Degradation of Phenol in Water

Abstract:Single-crystalline nanorods are intrinsic highways for charge transfer and hence ideal nanofeatures for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) degradations of pollutants in wastewater. Photocatalytic thin films on flexible substrates avoid the nuisance catalysts-recovering procedure and also allow for the flexible design in photo catalytic apparatus. We therefore directly deposited single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorod arrays on flexible and conductive Ti substrates through a hydrothermal technique and optimized the synthetic parameters to achieve an extremely high PEC activity towards phenol removal in water under UV light illumination. In the presence of tetrabutyltitanate (TBT) and HCl reactants under a hydrothermal environment, a balance in the erosion of the Ti substrate and the precipitation of TiO2 nanorods is found to be the key to tune the nanofeatures of the TiO2 thin films and in turn the PEC efficiency. The decreasing TBT concentration achieved a more sparsely distributed nanorod array, which significantly contributes to the PEC activity; yet too little TBT resulted in total dissolution of Ti plates. The PEC activity increased with increasing hydrothermal duration because of more loaded TiO2. The maximum reaction rate constant is 2.74 h(-1), which is 39 times that of a commercial P25 TiO2 nanoparticulate film. The photocurrent stabilized at 0.9 mA/cm(2) under the illumination of AM1.5G simulated solar light, suggesting a high separation efficiency of photogenerated holes and electrons along the single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorod arrays.
Phenol Degradation by TiO2 Photocatalysts Combined with Different Pulsed Discharge Systems.

Abstract:Films of TiO2 nanotubes distributed over the inner surface of a discharge reactor cylinder (CTD) or adhered to a stainless steel electrode surface (PTD) in a discharge reactor were compared with a single-discharge (SD) system to investigate their efficiencies in phenol degradation. Morphology studies indicated that the TiO2 film was destroyed in the PTD system, but that there was no change in the CTD system after discharge. X-ray diffraction results revealed that the anatase phase of the original sample was preserved in the CTD system, but that an anatase-to-rutile phase transformation occurred in the PTD system after discharge. The highest efficiencies of phenol degradation and total organic carbon (TOC) mineralization were observed in the CTD system, and there was no decrease in phenol degradation efficiency upon reuse of a TiO2 film, indicating high catalysis activity and stability of the TiO2 photocatalysts in the combined treatment. TiO2 photocatalysts favored the formation of hydrogen peroxide and disfavored the formation of ozone. A greater degree of oxidation of intermediates and higher energy efficiency in phenol oxidation were observed with the TiO2-plasma systems, especially in the CTD system, compared to those with the SD system.

The structural and surface morphology of electrode was examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Effects of initial phenol concentration, pH value, number of film layers, voltage of electrical bias applied, variation of inorganic salt type and types of dissolved gas on the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation of phenol using ultraviolet (UV) illuminated TiO2/Ni thin-film electrode were investigated. The mechanism of PEC degradation of phenol was also studied by analyzing reaction intermediates.

Abstract:TiO2 nanorods decorated with CdS and Ag-0 were prepared and anchored on to a fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode in order to investigate the photoelectrochemical (PEC) oxidation of nitrobenzene (NB) coupled with simultaneous reduction of water to produce molecular hydrogen (H-2). The modified TiO2 nanorods (TiO2-NRs) prepared for 4 h have regular nanoroads with high superficial area and Ag nanoparticles loaded on the surface of nanoroads covered with CdS film uniformly. The nano-composite TiO2-NRs with photochemically active up to 700 nm with coupled photoconversion efficiencies for NB degradation and H-2 production as high as 4.4%. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag not only excited the photo-generated electron of Ag nanoparticles, but also promoted the electron transfer from CdS to TiO2-NRs. NB as a role of electron donor, reacts with hole to improve the efficiency of H-2 production. The heterostructure electrode for solar energy conversion had an important significance for solving environmental pollution and energy crisis. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Enhanced Photoelectrocatalytic Performance for Degradation of Diclofenac and Mechanism with TiO2 Nano-Particles Decorated TiO2 Nano-Tubes Arrays Photoelectrode

Abstract:In this study, TiO2 nano-particles decorated TiO2 nano-tubes arrays (TiO2 NPs/TiO2 NTAs) photoelectrodes have been successfully prepared through anodization, combined with ultrasonic strategy, followed by annealing post-treatment. The morphology and structure of the as-prepared TiO2 NPs/TiO2 NTAs photoelectrodes were characterized by scanning electrons microscopy (SEM), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV–visible light diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS). In addition, the generation of hydroxyl radicals (OH) was detected by a photoluminescence (PL) spectra using terephthalic acid (TA) as a probe molecule. Furthermore, the photoelectrochemical (PECH) properties of TiO2 NPs/TiO2 NTAs photoanode were investigated through transient open circuit potential (OCP), photocurrent response (PCR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It was found that TiO2 NPs/TiO2 NTAs photoelectrode exhibited a distinct decrease of OCP of −0.219mVcm−2 and PCR of 0.049mAcm−2, while a significantly enhanced photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) efficiency of 63.6% (0.4V vs. SCE) for the degradation of diclofenac. Moreover, the enhanced PEC mechanism of TiO2 NPs/TiO2 NTAs photoanode was proposed. The high PEC performance could be attributed to the decoration of TiO2 NPs, which could improve the mobility and separation efficiency of photoinduced charge carriers under external potential.
ZnFe2O4 Leaves Grown on TiO2 Trees Enhance Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting.

Abstract:TiO2 has excellent electrochemical properties but limited solar photocatalytic performance in light of its large bandgap. One important class of visible-wavelength sensitizers of TiO2 is based on ZnFe2O4, which has shown fully a doubling in performance relative to pure TiO2. Prior efforts on this important front have relied on presynthesized nanoparticles of ZnFe2O4 adsorbed on a TiO2 support; however, these have not yet achieved the full potential of this system since they do not provide a consistently maximized area of the charge-separating heterointerface per volume of sensitizing absorber. A novel atomic layer deposition (ALD)-enhanced synthesis of sensitizing ZnFe2O4 leaves grown on the trunks of TiO2 trees is reported. These new materials exhibit fully a threefold enhancement in photoelectrochemical performance in water splitting compared to pristine TiO2 under visible illumination. The new materials synthesis strategy relies first on the selective growth of FeOOH nanosheets, 2D structures that shoot off from the sides of the TiO2 trees; these templates are then converted to ZnFe2O4 with the aid of a novel ALD step, a strategy that preserves morphology while adding the Zn cation to achieve enhanced optical absorption and optimize the heterointerface band alignment.
Preparation of a Ti0.7W0.3O2/TiO2 Nanocomposite Interfacial Photocatalyst and Its Photocatalytic Degradation of Phenol Pollutants in Wastewater

Abstract:A Ti0.7W0.3O2/TiO2 nanocomposite interfacial photocatalyst was designed and prepared for the photocatalytic degradation of phenol pollutants in wastewater. The detailed properties of the Ti0.7W0.3O2/TiO2 nanocomposite interface (NCI) were analyzed by XRD, SEM, EDX, DRS, UPS and XPS technologies, showing that anatase TiO2 nanospheres (NSs) were uniformly dispersed on the surface of rutile Ti0.7W0.3O2 nanoparticles (NPs) and formed the nanocomposite interface. The DRS and UPS results of 5 wt% Ti0.7W0.3O2/TiO2 NCI indicated a greatly broadened light response range with a wavelength shorter than 527 nm and a shorter band gap energy of 2.37 eV. The conduction band of TiO2 NSs, Ti0.7W0.3O2 NPs and 5 wt% Ti0.7W0.3O2/TiO2 NCI were measured based on the results of the valence band and band gap energy obtained via XPS and DRS, and then the energy level diagram of Ti0.7W0.3O2/TiO2 NCI was proposed. The photocatalytic degradation of phenol at Ti0.7W0.3O2/TiO2 NCI with different loading ratios of Ti0.7W0.3O2 NPs was investigated under optimum conditions (i.e., pH of 4.5, catalyst dosage of 0.45 g L-1 and phenol initial concentration of 95 ppm) under the illumination of ultraviolet visible light. Also, 5 wt% Ti0.7W0.3O2/TiO2 NCI exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, with the initial rate constant (k) calculated as 0.09111 min-1. After recycling six times, Ti0.7W0.3O2/TiO2 NCI showed good stability and recyclability. The involvement of superoxide radicals in the initial reaction at Ti0.7W0.3O2/TiO2 NCI was evidenced by the use of a terephthalic acid (TA) fluorescent probe. Besides, UV-Vis spectroscopy, UHPLC-MS and GC-MS technologies were used to analyze the main intermediates in the photocatalytic degradation of phenol. The probable photocatalytic degradation mechanism of phenol at Ti0.7W0.3O2/TiO2 NCI was also proposed.
Electrochemically Assisted Photocatalytic Degradation of 4-Chlorophenol by Znfe2o4-Modified Tio2 Nanotube Array Electrode under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:A well-aligned ZnFe2O4/TiO2 composite nanotube array (ZnFe2O4/TiO2-NTs) electrode with visible-light activity was successfully prepared using a two-step electrochemical process of anodization and a novel cathodic electrodeposition method followed by annealing. The ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles were highly dispersed inside the TiO2-NTs but minimized at the tube entrances. The structure and optical properties of the TiO2 nanotubes and the derived composites have been well characterized. The composites displayed a strong photo response in the visible region and low recombination rate of the electron-hole pairs. In addition, the synthesized ZnFe2O4/TiO2 NTs electrode showed much higher photocurrent density in the visible region than pure TiO2 NTs electrode. The dramatically enhanced electrochemically assisted photocatalytic activity of the composite electrode was evaluated in the decomposition of 4-chlorophenol and dichloroacetate under visible light irradiation (420 nm < lambda < 600 nm). The improved photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activity is derived from the synergetic effect between ZnFe2O4 and TiO2, which promoted the migration efficiency of photogenerated carriers at the interface of the composite and enhanced the efficiency of photon harvesting in the visible region. The degradation of 4-chlorophenol was monitored by measuring Cl- concentrations and analyzing reaction intermediates by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (HPLC-MS).
Highly Ordered TiO2 Nanotube Arrays Wrapped with G-C3n4 Nanoparticles for Efficient Charge Separation and Increased Photoelectrocatalytic Degradation of Phenol.

Abstract:Novel graphitic carbon nitride nanoparticles (NPs)-wrapped TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTAs) (g-C3N4/TiO2) were fabricated by a two-step method including an electrochemical anodization technique followed by impregnation under vacuum using urea as precursor. The as-prepared photoelectrode exhibited outstanding photoelectric properties and excellent photelectrocatalytic (PEC) performance for the degradation of phenol under stimulated solar light, which was due to the enhanced light absorption property and improved charge separation efficiency. The introduction of g-C3N4 NPs strongly decreased the charge transfer resistance and boosted the charge separation efficiency of TiO2. The optimum ratio of the g-C3N4/TiO2 yielded a pronounced 4.18-fold higher photocurrent density than TiO2. Besides, the combination of g-C3N4 NPs could negatively shift for the flat band potential of TiO2, resulting in an enhanced reduction property for the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The PEC process for the degradation of phenol over g-C3N4/TiO2 was much higher than the sum of photocatalytic (PC) and electrocatalytic (EC) processes indicating that a photoelectric synergy was achieved on the as-prepared photoelectrode and resulting in an improved PEC performance for the composite photoelectrode.
Mixed-Phase ZnIn 2 S 4 Nanosheets Grown on TiO 2 Nanotrees for the Visible-Light Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes

Abstract:A broad-band, environmentally friendly multijunction photocatalyst, composed of mixed-phase ZnIn2S4 in situ grown on TiO2 nanotree powders (NtPs), was prepared via a facile hydrothermal method. The unique structure of the TiO2 NtPs provided a large surface area for the easy growth of ZnIn2S4 and for the efficient adsorption of reactants. The introduced ZnIn2S4, possessing a homojunction structure enabled by two closely interlaced crystalline phases, endowed the ZnIn2S4/TiO2 composite with an enhanced visible-light response and boosted charge separation between the two phases. Moreover, the in situ growth of ZnIn2S4 on TiO2, forming a heterojunction at the interface, rendered an intimate contact and strong interaction, which was favorable for the efficient charge transfer between the two components. These advantages all together resulted in the significantly enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of methyl orange. The charge-transfer dynamics and pathways were studied by performing photoluminescence measurements and in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The active species involved in photocatalysis were also explored by carrying out trapping experiments. Based on these results, the possible mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic activity was proposed and discussed. This work highlights the great potential of developing broad-band and efficient ZnIn2S4- and TiO2-based photocatalysts through simultaneously constructing both a homojunction and a heterojunction for remediating environmental pollution and provides a mechanistic understanding of photocatalysis in a type-II, multijunction hybrid.

Abstract:TiO2 probably plays the most important role in photocatalysis due to its excellent chemical and physical properties. However, the band gap of TiO2 corresponds to the Ultraviolet (UV) region, which is inactive under visible irradiation. At present, TiO2 has become activated in the visible light region by metal and nonmetal doping and the fabrication of composites. Recently, nano-TiO2 has attracted much attention due to its characteristics of larger specific surface area and more exposed surface active sites. nano-TiO2 has been obtained in many morphologies such as ultrathin nanosheets, nanotubes, and hollow nanospheres. This work focuses on the application of nano-TiO2 in efficient environmental photocatalysis such as hydrogen production, dye degradation, CO2 degradation, and nitrogen fixation, and discusses the methods to improve the activity of nano-TiO2 in the future.

Abstract:In this paper, photocatalysts based on TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) and TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTAs) sensitized by Cu (II) meso-tetrakis(N-ethylpyridinium-4-yl) porphyrin (CuTEPyP) were synthesized and their structures were characterized by various analytical methods. The photocatalytic activities of both composites were then investigated through degradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in aqueous solutions under visible light irradiation. It was found that CuTEPyP/TNTAs could eliminate 95% 4-NP within 4 h, which was considerably higher than the yield obtained with CuTEPyP/TNTs (56%) under the same conditions. Compared to CuTEPyP/TNTs, the improved photocatalytic activity of CuTEPyP/TNTAs can be ascribed to increased light absorption, high separation rate of photo-generated charge pairs, and efficient charge transfer. A plausible photocatalytic degradation mechanism involving hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radical anions and singlet oxygen species was also proposed. This work presents an efficient paradigm for eliminating 4-NP under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:We reported a novel TiO2-x/g-C3N4 nanorod arrays photoelectrode by urea drop-calcined and NaBH4 reduction. Due to synergistic effect of the oxygen vacancies and the g-C3N4 nanosheets, the TiO2-x/g-C3N4 photoelectrode exhibited excellent photoelectrochemical property and photoelectrocatalytic activity. The photocurrent density of TiO2-x/g-C3N4 was 6-fold and 1.5-fold higher than TiO2 and TiO2/g-C3N4, respectively. Meanwhile, the phenol degradation rate of TiO2-x/g-C3N4 photoelectrodes was as high as 83% under the stimulated solar light. Besides, the oxygen vacancies could promote the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction between the TiO2 nanorods and g-C3N4 nanosheets.

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies (OVs) are one of the most critical factors that enhance the electrical and catalytic characteristics of metal oxide-based photoelectrodes. In this work, a simple procedure was applied to prepare reduced TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTAs) (TiO2-x) via a one-step reduction method using NaBH4. A series of characterization techniques were used to study the structural, optical, and electronic properties of TiO2-x NTAs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of defects in TiO2-x NTAs. Photoacoustic measurements were used to estimate the electron-trap density in the NTAs. Photoelectrochemical studies show that the photocurrent density of TiO2-x NTAs was nearly 3 times higher than that of pristine TiO2. It was found that increasing OVs in TiO2 affects the surface recombination centers, enhances electrical conductivity, and improves charge transport. For the first time, a TiO2-x photoanode was used in the photoelectrochemical (PEC) degradation of a textile dye (basic blue 41, B41) and ibuprofen (IBF) pharmaceutical using in situ generated reactive chlorine species (RCS). Liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was used to study the mechanisms for the degradation of B41 and IBF. Phytotoxicity tests of B41 and IBF solutions were performed using Lepidium sativum L. to evaluate the potential acute toxicity before and after the PEC treatment. The present work provides efficient PEC degradation of the B41 dye and IBF in the presence of RCS without generating harmful products.

Abstract:To promote efficient use of solar energy, many studies have focused on the modification of TiO2 to extend its spectral response to visible region. Here we report a combined modification of TiO2 by two components: the nonmetal element boron and the metal oxide Ni2O3. The photocatalyst presents high photocatalytic activity in the visible region, which can efficiently degrade and mineralize toxic organic pollutants such as trichlorophenol (TCP), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), and sodium benzoate. The dechlorination and mineralization results indicate the photocatalytic pathway via visible light excitation. The study demonstrates that the modification of TiO2 both to extend its spectral response to the visible region and to improve its catalytic efficiency can be achieved by doping with boron, a nonmetal, and Ni2O3, a metal oxide.
TiO2 Nanosheet:Synthesis and Photocatalytic Performance for Phenol Degradation

Abstract:TiO2 nanosheet (NS) with exposed (001) facets was synthesized via a hydrothermal approach using titanate nanotube (NT) as the precursor and NaF as the shape controlling agent. Photocatalytic phenol degradation over the catalysts was investigated. Results showed that upon hydrothermal treatment NT was transformed to anatase NS with high (001) facets. In comparison with NT, NS displayed much higher photocatalytic activity for phenol degradation, and the catalytic activity increased with the hydrothermal temperature. Phenol degradation over NS followed first-order kinetics, and NS prepared at 200 degrees C had the highest rate constant of 0.083 min(-1). Moreover, the dependency of phenol degradation rate on initial phenol concentration obeyed the Langmui-Hinshelwood model, indicative of an adsorption controlling reaction mechanism.
