Abstract:Image contrast enhancement is a very critical step for automatic image processing and analyzing applications. In this paper, we proposed a novel image enhancement algorithm based on the single-scale Retinex (SSR) theory to enhance the parts of interest on the original grey images. In this pilot study, our method first separates an input image into illumination component and reflectance component, then we calculate the approximate luminance of the original image using an appropriate Gaussian smoothing method with the conventional FFT(fast Fourier transform). The approach can avoid more complex implementations and control the dynamic range of the reflectance component effectively by reducing the contribution of the illumination component. In the second step, the illumination component is normalized adaptively for image dynamic range and the reflectance component is manipulated with a nonlinear Junction. Finally, we can obtain the result image from the illumination component image along with the reflectance component image by a gamma correction. We applied the proposed algorithm to three types test images and the experimental results show that the proposed method yields better performance for image enhancement over the conventional histogram equalization, the Frankle-McCann Retinex algorithm and McCann99 algorithm.
