Abstract:Traditional inertial response control of variable speed wind turbines (VSWTs) consists of two separate phases:inertia emulation control (IEC) and rotor speed recovery (RSR), which may switch between each other in need following a certain logic. Although it is specifically suitable for coping with individual events of large frequency deviation, such a design may not meet requirements of sustained frequency regulation due to its complicated switching logic between IEC and RSR. In this regard, the paper analyzes the requirement to droop characteristics of VSWTs participating in sustained frequency regulation, based on which a nonlinear droop control (NDC) of VSWTs is devised based on Butterworth-type coefficient curve. The NDC realizes self-recovery of rotor speed, avoiding the complicated switching logic between IEC and RSR. Eigen-analysis on a two-area power system empirically shows that the proposed NDC can enhance small signal stability of power systems. Simulation results demonstrate that, compared with traditional IEC, the proposed NDC can reduce VSWT rotor speed drops while mitigating risk of a second frequency drop caused by rotor speed recovery. It is also observed that VSWTs with NDC could provide comparable, even stronger, frequency support than synchronous generator's primary frequency control.
