Abstract:The combination of wave energy convertors (WECs) with a floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) is expected to produce a positive effect on the dynamic responses of the integrated floating energy system (IFES). In order to investigate the influence of WEC layouts on the dynamic behavior of the entire system, several IFES models consisting of a barge-type FOWT and multiple oscillating WECs are proposed. A coupled analysis tool is developed to simulate the aero-hydro-servo-elastic coupled dynamic behavior of the hybrid system under combined wind-wave conditions. It is found that the platform rotational motions of each IFES model are effectively mitigated by the WECs integrated in the same direction under the examined load cases. The largest reduction in fluctuation of platform roll up to 71.52% is achieved when eight WECs symmetrically distributed, while the platform pitch is reduced by 53.62% due to the absence of WECs in the rolling direction. Additionally, the longitudinal WECs have an intense effect on reducing rolling bending moment at the tower-base, while the pitching bending moment is increased as the WEC number increased because of the complex nonlinear interaction. Furthermore, the longitudinal WECs dominates the power production due to the relatively larger difference between the WEC and platform motions. The total output power of IFES model with eight WECs increased by 6.07% compares to that of the FOWT. This study has confirmed that the IFES model with an appropriate layout design is capable of improving platform stability and enhancing the energy generation efficiency.
