Abstract:In the U.S. South, over half of new HIV diagnoses occur among Black Americans with research lagging for women who face increased HIV rates and low PrEP uptake, among other health inequities. Community engaged research is a promising method for reversing these trends with established best practices for building infrastructure, implementing research, and translating evidence-based interventions into clinical and community settings. Using the 5Ws of Racial Equity in Research Framework (5Ws) as a racial equity lens, the following paper models a review of a salon-based intervention to improve PrEP awareness and uptake among Black women that was co-developed with beauty salons, stylists, and Black women through an established community advisory council. In this paper we demonstrate how the 5Ws framework was applied to review processes, practices, and outcomes from a community-engaged research approach. The benefits of and challenges to successful collaboration are discussed with insights for future research and community impact.

Abstract:In the U.S. there are significant racial and gender disparities in the uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Black Americans represented 14% of PrEP users in 2022, but accounted for 42% of new HIV diagnoses in 2021 and in the South, Black people represented 48% of new HIV diagnoses in 2021 but only 21% of PrEP users in 2022. Women who use drugs may be even less likely than women who do not use drugs have initiated PrEP. Moreover, women involved in community supervision programs (CSP) are less likely to initiate or use PrEP, More PrEP interventions that focus on Black women with recent history of drug use in CSPs are needed to reduce inequities in PrEP uptake.

Abstract:Abstract Black women are essential to ending the HIV epidemic in the United States; yet prevention, access, testing, and structural racism affect how HIV disproportionately affects them. Limited public health research focuses on Black women attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the ability to address HIV prevention, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake. PrEP is a once-daily oral pill used to prevent HIV transmission and has suboptimal uptake within the Black community. This generic qualitative descriptive analysis identifies the barriers and facilitators of PrEP uptake among Black women attending an HBCU using the health belief model. Overall, 22 Black college women participated in a 60-minute focus group. Emergent categories were as follows: (a) Barriers—stigma, cost, and side effects; (b) Facilitators—PrEP's effectiveness, exposure to HIV, and unprotected sex. Our findings can inform future efforts to increase PrEP uptake among Black women attending an HBCU.

Abstract:Background African American women are disproportionately at risk for HIV infection . To increase women's readiness to consider taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), we conducted a pilot study of Women Prepping for PrEP Plus (WP3+). Adapted from an evidence-based HIV risk reduction intervention for African American couples who are HIV-serodiscordant, WP3+ is a group-based culturally congruent program designed for African American women without HIV. Methods Women were screened for eligibility; if eligible, they were invited to participate in the four-session WP3+ group. Participants completed surveys at baseline ( n = 47) and post-implementation ( n = 28); surveys assessed demographics, HIV and PrEP knowledge, depression and posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms, substance use, sexual risk behaviors, health care–related discrimination, and social support. In a process evaluation, a subset of women completed qualitative interviews at baseline ( n = 35) and post-implementation ( n = 18); the interviews were designed to converge with (e.g., on HIV and PrEP knowledge) and expand upon (e.g., unmeasured perceived impacts of WP3+) quantitative measures. To triangulate with the quantitative data, deductive qualitative analysis concentrated on women's knowledge and awareness of PrEP and HIV, their relationship dynamics and challenges, and their considerations (e.g., barriers, facilitators) related to taking PrEP; inductive analysis focused on women's experiences in the intervention. Results Participants in the WP3+ intervention reported: improved proportion of condom use in the past 90 days ( p < .01) and in a typical week ( p < .05); reduced PTS symptoms ( p < .05); increased HIV knowledge ( p < .0001) and awareness of PrEP ( p < .001); and greater consideration of using PrEP ( p < .001). In interviews, participants expressed not only increased knowledge but also appreciation for learning how to protect themselves against HIV, communicate with their partners, and take charge of their health, and they expressed greater receptiveness to using PrEP as a result of the knowledge and skills they gained. Conclusions The WP3+ pilot study demonstrated preliminary efficacy and acceptability as an HIV-prevention program for African American women. A controlled trial is needed to confirm its efficacy for increasing PrEP use among African American women.

Abstract:Black women in the USA are at the highest risk among women for HIV. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) prevents HIV transmission, but uptake among Black women remains low. An open pilot trial was conducted on MI-PrEP, a brief culturally tailored intervention incorporating motivational interviewing (MI) strategies to improve PrEP uptake and motivation. MI-PrEP is the first behavioral intervention developed to promote PrEP uptake among women in the USA. In Miami, FL, ten Black women who met eligibility criteria (e.g., sexual partner with HIV) were enrolled. These women participated in the two sessions of MI-PrEP and a 1-month follow-up. Participants completed measures on PrEP (motivation, uptake [verified via medical records], adherence, and barriers), medical mistrust, and an exit interview. These preliminary findings showed acceptability and feasibility with high satisfaction ratings; increases in PrEP uptake, knowledge, and motivation to use; and decreases in PrEP barriers and medical mistrust. Greater attention is needed on the psychosocial and structural factors among Black women who may benefit from PrEP.

Abstract:Black women continue to be disproportionally burdened by HIV. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective HIV prevention option, which is underused by Black women. While social network interventions (SNIs) have been widely researched and implemented among some groups vulnerable to HIV, little is known about social network characteristics among Black women. To learn more about the social networks of Black women vulnerable to HIV and their knowledge of and interest in PrEP, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among 109 Black women aged 18–45 years attending a family planning clinic in Chicago, Illinois. In our study, 44% of women reported that they were moderately to extremely concerned about HIV. Over half of participants (53%) had a small personal network size (i.e., less than two). No statistically significant associations between having larger network sizes and having previously heard of PrEP, having an interest in starting PrEP, or having good PrEP knowledge were detected. Open-ended responses revealed high levels of trust in network connections with matters related to sexual health. Additionally, nearly all (94%) of women reported that SNIs were a good idea to promote PrEP. Future network studies are needed to inform the development of effective intervention strategies for women.

Increasing providers' PrEP prescription for Black cisgender women: A qualitative study to improve provider knowledge and competency via PrEP training

Abstract:Background: Awareness and uptake of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remains low among Black/African American cisgender women, partly due to low self-reported PrEP knowledge and comfort among primary care providers. Ensuring providers are trained on PrEP is crucial, as increased PrEP knowledge is associated with higher rates of PrEP prescription. Objective: We aimed to develop a PrEP training for providers to improve their self-efficacy in discussing and prescribing PrEP for Black women, with the ultimate goal of increasing PrEP awareness and utilization among Black women. Design: In this qualitative study, we conducted focus groups with medical providers at three federally qualified health centers in the Southern and Midwestern United States to identify themes informing the development of a provider PrEP training. Methods: Providers were asked for input on content/design of PrEP training. Transcripts underwent rapid qualitative analysis using the Stanford Lightning Report Method. Themes were identified and presented under the domains of the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. Results: Ten providers completed four focus groups. Themes included the individual characteristics of providers (low comfort initiating PrEP discussions, particularly among White providers) and the outer setting of client attitudes (perceptions of potential provider bias/racism, varying levels of concern about HIV acquisition). Opportunities were identified to maximize the benefit of training design (e.g., developing case scenarios to enhance providers' cultural competency with Black women and PrEP knowledge). Conclusion: This comprehensive PrEP training features both didactic material and interactive role-plays to equip providers with the clinical knowledge for prescribing PrEP while building their competency discussing PrEP with Black women. This training is particularly important for providers who have racial or gender discordance with Black women and express lower comfort discussing PrEP with these clients. Provider training could lead to minimizing racial- and gender-based inequities in PrEP use.

Abstract:Black women experience disparities in HIV incidence. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a once-daily pill that can prevent HIV transmission. To enhance PrEP uptake among Black women, it is essential to examine their perceptions of PrEP. In 2018, 33 Black women in New York City completed interviews about their attitudes, knowledge, and perceived barriers and facilitators to PrEP use. Emergent themes were organized using a <span class="ej-keyword">socioecological model</span>. Participants identified barriers at the sociocultural level, including stigma, medical mistrust, and health care avoidance. At the community level, health care access issues and limited community knowledge were reported. Partner-level barriers included trust in partners and meaning attributed to PrEP use within the context of monogamy. Individual-level barriers included low perceived risk and concerns about PrEP's safety and efficacy. Our findings can inform future PrEP research with Black women, as well as PrEP implementation efforts aimed at increasing uptake among this population.

Evaluation of a community-informed multimedia intervention to increase PrEP awareness and intention among African American young adults

Abstract:Despite the benefits of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in preventing HIV and its potential for reducing racial/ethnic HIV inequities, PrEP remains underutilized among African Americans who may benefit from it. Factors of PrEP uptake include awareness and acceptability of this prevention strategy among this group, yet few community-informed interventions have been developed and evaluated to address these challenges. Thus, this study evaluates the effectiveness of a community-informed, six-month multimedia campaign (print, digital media, internet radio, social media) for African American young adults (age 18-29) in Louisville, Kentucky to increase PrEP awareness and PrEP use intentions. Pretest surveys, posttest surveys, and digital analytic metrics were used to determine campaign effectiveness. Logistic regressions indicate increased PrEP awareness over time (p ≤ 0.0001) and greater PrEP intention among participants reporting greater campaign affinity (p ≤ 0.05). Campaign digital analytic performance was similar to or exceeded that of industry competitors (e.g., healthcare organizations). Findings indicate that a community-informed multimedia campaign increased PrEP use intentions among those exhibiting greater campaign affinity (the extent to which participants report a favorable view of the campaign) and demonstrated similar or greater effectiveness in digital elements as industry competitors at a cost-effective price. Future studies should incorporate community-engaged approaches in developing health communication products for greater PrEP acceptability and efficiency.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT0355959.
A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis of Factors Affecting Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Willingness Among Black Women for HIV Prevention

Abstract:Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can significantly reduce human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission among Black women in the United States (U.S.), a group disproportionately affected by HIV. However, PrEP uptake in this HIV-vulnerable population is low. This review analyzes the factors influencing Black women's PrEP willingness using the Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations (BMVP). Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Study Design (PICOS) framework, we conducted a systematic literature search and selected 24 peer-reviewed studies on PrEP willingness. Narrative synthesis revealed a heterogeneous landscape of the determinants affecting PrEP willingness among Black women, categorized into three main domains. Predisposing demographic and social factors included younger age, unmarried status, higher education, sexual or gender minority identity, trust in healthcare providers, and perceived HIV risk. Predisposing behavioral factors included condomless sex, multiple partners, and engagement in sex work. Socioeconomic status, health insurance, healthcare access, support systems, and structural challenges were identified as enabling factors influencing Black women's PrEP willingness. Finally, the perceived need domain and health-related factors influencing the perceived need for PrEP included a history of sexually transmitted infections (STI), intimate partner violence (IPV), and birth control interference. This study emphasizes the complexity of the barriers and facilitators of PrEP uptake and, thus, the need for tailored interventions and health strategies to promote its use. Addressing the interconnected individual, interpersonal, and structural determinants of PrEP access is crucial for improving PrEP willingness and thereby advancing health equity in this population.
Just4Us: Development of a Counselor-Navigator and Text Message Intervention to Promote PrEP Uptake Among Cisgender Women at Elevated Risk for HIV

Abstract:In the United States, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among eligible cisgender women has been slow, despite the availability of oral PrEP since 2012. Although women make up nearly 20% of those living with HIV, there are currently few PrEP uptake interventions for cisgender women at elevated risk for acquiring HIV. Here we describe the process used to design and pre-pilot test Just4Us, a theory-based behavioral intervention to promote PrEP initiation and adherence among PrEP-eligible cisgender women. This work was part of a multiphase study conducted in New York City and Philadelphia, two locations with HIV rates higher than the national average. The counselor-navigator component of the intervention was designed to be delivered in a 60- to 90-min in-person session in the community, followed by several phone calls to support linkage to care. An automated text messaging program was also designed for adherence support. Just4Us addressed personal and structural barriers to PrEP uptake using an empowerment framework by building on women's insights and resources to overcome barriers along the PrEP cascade. Usability pre-pilot testing results were favorable and provided valuable feedback used to refine the intervention.
Ameliorating Racial Disparities in HIV Prevention via a Nurse-Led, AI-Enhanced Program for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Utilization Among Black Cisgender Women: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study

Abstract:Background: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a critical biomedical strategy to prevent HIV transmission among cisgender women. Despite its proven effectiveness, Black cisgender women remain significantly underrepresented throughout the PrEP care continuum, facing barriers such as limited access to care, medical mistrust, and intersectional racial or HIV stigma. Addressing these disparities is vital to improving HIV prevention outcomes within this community. On the other hand, nurse practitioners (NPs) play a pivotal role in PrEP utilization but are underrepresented due to a lack of awareness, a lack of human resources, and insufficient support. Equipped with the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced large language models, chatbots effectively facilitate health care communication and linkage to care in various domains, including HIV prevention and PrEP care. Objective: Our study harnesses NPs' holistic care capabilities and the power of AI through natural language processing algorithms, providing targeted, patient-centered facilitation for PrEP care. Our overarching goal is to create a nurse-led, stakeholder-inclusive, and AI-powered program to facilitate PrEP utilization among Black cisgender women, ultimately enhancing HIV prevention efforts in this vulnerable group in 3 phases. This project aims to mitigate health disparities and advance innovative, technology-based solutions. Methods: The study uses a mixed methods design involving semistructured interviews with key stakeholders, including 50 PrEP-eligible Black women, 10 NPs, and a community advisory board representing various socioeconomic backgrounds. The AI-powered chatbot is developed using HumanX technology and SmartBot360's Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant framework to ensure data privacy and security. The study spans 18 months and consists of 3 phases: exploration, development, and evaluation. Results: As of May 2024, the institutional review board protocol for phase 1 has been approved. We plan to start recruitment for Black cisgender women and NPs in September 2024, with the aim to collect information to understand their preferences regarding chatbot development. While institutional review board approval for phases 2 and 3 is still in progress, we have made significant strides in networking for participant recruitment. We plan to conduct data collection soon, and further updates on the recruitment and data collection progress will be provided as the study advances. Conclusions: The AI-powered chatbot offers a novel approach to improving PrEP care utilization among Black cisgender women, with opportunities to reduce barriers to care and facilitate a stigma-free environment. However, challenges remain regarding health equity and the digital divide, emphasizing the need for culturally competent design and robust data privacy protocols. The implications of this study extend beyond PrEP care, presenting a scalable model that can address broader health disparities. Addressing Unmet PrEP Needs in Women: Impact of a Laboratory-Driven Protocol at an Urban, Essential Hospital

Abstract:Abstract Background HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake in women remains low. We developed a laboratory result-driven protocol to link women with a positive bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) to HIV PrEP at an urban, safety-net hospital. Methods Electronic health records of women with positive chlamydia, gonorrhea, and/or syphilis tests were reviewed and those eligible for PrEP were referred for direct or primary care provider-driven outreach. We assessed the proportion of women with STI who received PrEP offers, acceptance, and prescriptions before (July 1, 2018 - December 31, 2018) and after (January 1, 2019 – June 30, 2020) implementation to evaluate changes in the delivery of key elements of the PrEP care cascade (i.e., PrEP offers, acceptance, and prescribing) for women with STI after protocol implementation Results The proportion of women who received PrEP offers increased from 7.6% to 17.6% (p < 0.001). After multivariable adjustment, only the post-intervention period was associated with PrEP offer (OR 2.49, 95% CI 1.68-3.68). In subgroup analyses, PrEP offers increased significantly among non-Hispanic Black (OR 2.75, 95% CI 1.65-4.58) and Hispanic (OR 5.34, 95% CI 1.77-16.11) women but not among non-Hispanic white women (OR 1.49, 95% CI 0.54-4.05). Significant changes in PrEP acceptance and prescriptions were not observed in the sample overall. Conclusion A laboratory result-driven protocol was associated with a significant increase in PrEP offers to Black and Hispanic women with STI. Results provide concrete suggestions for health systems seeking to increase PrEP access and equity among women.

A Pilot Randomized Control Trial of the Motivational Interviewing to Increase PrEP Uptake Intervention Among Black Women in the United States

Abstract:Despite the disproportional impact of HIV, Black individuals are benefiting the least from pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Motivational interviewing (MI) for PrEP uptake (MI-PrEP) is a two-session culturally tailored intervention incorporating MI strategies to improve PrEP motivation and uptake among cisgender Black women. A pilot randomized control trial was conducted in the Southeastern United States, and 41 women were randomized to MI-PrEP (session 1 with PrEP psychoeducation and MI and session 2 with MI and light case management) or enhanced treatment as usual (ETAU; two sessions of PrEP psychoeducation [videos explaining PrEP]). Women completed one follow-up assessment (1 month after visit 2). Measures captured primary (motivation [via contemplation and readiness ruler] and PrEP uptake via medical records) and secondary outcomes (e.g., PrEP knowledge, barriers to PrEP, and speaking to a provider about PrEP). Difference-in-differences analyses comparing MI-PrEP with ETAU as well as t-tests for within-group changes over time were conducted. Women who completed MI-PrEP (90.5% retained) compared with ETAU (100% retained) had a significantly higher likelihood of speaking to a provider about PrEP (OR = 4.42e7, CI [8.55e6, 2.29e8], DiD = 17.60, se = 0.84, p < 0.001). Within the MI-PrEP group, women had significant increases in PrEP prescription, knowledge, and motivation/contemplation, and significant decreases in financial resources as a PrEP barrier and medical mistrust (MMT). ETAU had within-group increases in PrEP prescription and speaking to a provider, no changes in motivation and MMT, and increases in specific barriers to care (e.g., transportation). Abstract:Racial inequities in HIV in the United States (US) are pervasive. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is one of the most effective yet underutilized HIV prevention strategies, and stark inequities in PrEP uptake exist. Lack of access to PrEP clinics is a major barrier to access that could be overcome by integrating pharmacists into the provision of PrEP services including prescribing and dispensing.

Abstract:Background: Black cisgender and transgender women are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic compared to women of other racial and ethnic identities. Twelve demonstration sites across the United States are adapting, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive bundle of two or more evidence informed interventions to improve health and outcomes and quality of life for Black women with HIV. Methods: Guided by Greenhalgh's Conceptual Model of Diffusion of Innovations in Health Service Organizations and Proctor's model for use of implementation strategies and evaluating implementation, service and client outcomes, this mixed methods study documents outcomes at the client, organization, and system level. Participant eligibility for the bundled interventions includes: individuals who are 18 years or older, identify as Black or African-American, identify as cisgender or transgender female and have a diagnosis of HIV. Qualitative data are collected systematically through a series of annual site visits and a standardized monthly call form to assess the barriers and facilitators to the implementation process and the key determinants impacting the intervention uptake and implementation strategies. Quantitative data collection for the implementation, service and client outcomes is conducted through a pre-post prospective study to examine the impact on Black women's health and well-being. Implementation outcomes include: the reach to Black women with HIV, adoption of interventions across the sites and their community; the fidelity to the components of the bundled interventions; the costs of the intervention; and the sustainability of the intervention in the organization and community. Primary service and client outcomes are improved linkage to and retention in HIV care and treatment, increased and sustained viral suppression, improved quality of life and resilience, and stigma reduction. Discussion: The study protocol presented is specifically designed to advance the evidence for adopting culturally responsive and relevant care into clinic and public health settings to improve the health and well-being for Black women with HIV. In addition the study may advance the implementation science field by furthering what is known about the ways in which bundled interventions can address barriers to care and facilitate the uptake of organizational practices to improve health.

Abstract:Background: Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) suffer from alarmingly high rates of HIV in the United States. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can reduce the risk of HIV infection by 99% among men who have sex with men, yet profound racial disparities in the uptake of PrEP persist. Low PrEP uptake in BMSM is driven by poor access to PrEP, including inconvenient locations of PrEP-prescribing physicians, distrust of physicians, and stigma, which limit communication about PrEP and its side effects. Previous work indicates that offering HIV prevention services in pharmacies located in low-income, underserved neighborhoods is feasible and can reduce stigma because pharmacies offer a host of less stigmatized health services (eg, vaccinations). We present a protocol for a pharmacy PrEP model that seeks to address challenges and barriers to pharmacy-based PrEP specifically for BMSM. Objective: We aim to develop a sustainable pharmacy PrEP delivery model for BMSM that can be implemented to increase PrEP access in low-income, underserved neighborhoods. Methods: This study design is a pilot intervention to test a pharmacy PrEP delivery model among pharmacy staff and BMSM. We will examine the PrEP delivery model's feasibility, acceptability, and safety and gather early evidence of its impact and cost with respect to PrEP uptake. A mixed-methods approach will be performed, including three study phases: (1) a completed formative phase with qualitative interviews from key stakeholders; (2) a completed transitional pilot phase to assess customer eligibility and willingness to receive PrEP in pharmacies during COVID-19; and (3) a planned pilot intervention phase which will test the delivery model in 2 Atlanta pharmacies in low-income, underserved neighborhoods. Results: Data from the formative phase showed strong support of pharmacy-based PrEP delivery among BMSM, pharmacists, and pharmacy staff. Important factors were identified to facilitate the implementation of PrEP screening and dissemination in pharmacies. During the transitional pilot phase, we identified 81 individuals who would have been eligible for the pilot phase. Conclusions: Pharmacies have proven to be a feasible source for offering PrEP for White men who have sex with men but have failed to reach the most at-risk, vulnerable population (ie, BMSM). Increasing PrEP access and uptake will reduce HIV incidence and racial inequities in HIV. Translational studies are required to build further evidence and scale pharmacy-based PrEP services specifically for populations that are disconnected from HIV prevention resources. Abstract:Pharmacy-based PrEP service delivery models can help address many of the barriers that inhibit the uptake of PrEP. In an increasing number of states, legislation has been passed, or is under consideration, to allow pharmacists to initiate PrEP without a prescription from a physician or other prescriber. However, there is not yet legislation in Washington, DC to allow pharmacy-based PrEP despite its potential to curb new cases of HIV, which disproportionately affect the Black community in the area. The DC Ends HIV Plan has a goal of less than 130 new cases of HIV per year by 2030, which would require that over 13,000 high-risk residents use PrEP. However, in 2021 only 6,724 Washingtonians were taking PrEP. This study seeks to address the absence of critical formative research into the factors that would influence the implementation of pharmacy-based PrEP in Washington DC using the Implementation Mapping (IM) framework. A needs assessment will be conducted through in-depth interviews (IDIs) with pharmacists (n = 6), PrEP providers (n = 6), current PrEP users (n = 6), DC Department of Health officials (n = 2), DC Board of Pharmacy officials (n = 4) and pharmacy-based PrEP experts (n = 4) to provide input on the operational aspects of pharmacy-based PrEP model as a strategy to increase PrEP uptake. Information gathered through this needs assessment will be used to develop standard operating procedures for the introduction of pilot pharmacy-based PrEP into community-based retail pharmacies.

Abstract:Background: Black women in the US experience higher rates of cervical cancer mortality due to delayed diagnosis from lower screening rates. Contributing to this disparity, especially for those who are 40-64 years old, are provider bias, costs, and limited access. Recent FDA approval of HPV self-collection and current innovative research efforts for clinical and simulated home- based HPV self-collection bring promise of increasing access. However, like other innovations, equitable dissemination of HPV self-collection will be challenging. Our project seeks to distribute HPV self-collection kits in unconventional settings like hair salons. We conducted a community-based participatory study using concept mapping to gather diverse insights to design a salon-based HPV self-collection intervention. Methods: We employed GroupWisdom and REDCap online platforms to engage with our participants. Participants were members of the Black Community Advisory Council of Tucson (Black CACTus). Concept mapping steps involved: 1) Brainstorming statements from a prompt, 2) Sorting statements into piles according to meaning by each participant, 3) Rating the importance and feasibility of statements, 4) Reviewing the cluster map, and 5) Reviewing a draft/proposed intervention. Results: Black CACTus members (n=10) included hairstylists (n=3), salon clients (n=4), and healthcare providers (n=3). All participants identified as Black women, with two also identifying as Latina and White. Participants were 23-53 years old. Brainstorming yielded 39 statements. A six-cluster map was generated using the sorting data. Cost-related factors like "free" or "covered by insurance," as well as convenience, were rated as highly important by all participants. Development of clear communication and education about screening benefits, test results, and timely delivery of results were regarded as the most feasible. Conclusions: To equitably increase cervical cancer screening we must look beyond traditional clinical settings to trusted community locales like hair salons. Including the voice of the community and cultural and contextual factors is vital when tailoring cancer screening initiatives, particularly for Black women. Our study used concept mapping, in a collaborative, iterative process with vested community members to identify intervention elements and implementation strategies that have the potential to increase access to and uptake of cervical cancer screening among Black women.
