Abstract:A new functionalized heteroleptic iridium complex coordinated with 1-phenylisoquinoline（1-piq） and a functionalized β-diketone（G1）,Ir（1-piq）2G1,was synthesized and characterized by 1H-NMR,mass spectrometry and elemental analysis.The larger conjugation of the replacement of acetylacetone（acac） by a functionalized β-diketonate ligand led to a significant decrease in the HOMO level toward vacuum level,while Ir（1-piq）2G1 and Ir（1-piq）2（acac） showed red phosphorescent emissions of about 620 nm in dichloromethane solution.The phosphorescent polymer light-emitting devices were achieved,with the complexes incorporated with polyfluorene（PFO） as a host polymer doped with 30% of 5-（4-biphenylyl）-2-（4-tert-butylphenyl）-1,3,4-oxadiazole（PBD） as electron transport material.The energy transfer mechanism of the devices was also discussed.The lower EL performance of Ir（1-piq）2G1 is ascribed to the inter-ligand energy transfer,indicating that it is important to control the energy level of the cyclometalated and ancillary ligands.

Abstract:Using 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl) pyrimidine as main ligand and tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate as ancillary ligand, one iridium complex was synthesized. This complex shows a green emission peaking at 543 nm with a quantum efficiency yield as 48% in deareated CH2Cl2 solution. It also has good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature of 351 degrees C. Using this material as emitter, the organic light-emitting diode shows good performances with a maximum luminance 42 898 cd/m(2), a maximum current efficiency up to 54.29 cd/A with low efficiency roll-off. At the luminance of 5000 and 10 000 cd/m(2), the current efficiencies are still kept at 46.70 and 40.63 cd/A, respectively. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:An iridium complex PIr(qnx) (iridium(III) bis(2-phenylpyridinato-N,C(2))(quinoxaline-2-carboxylate)) is reported for its unique and fast vapochromic and vapoluminescent behaviors. The emission of PIr(qnx) is governed by the whole crystal rather than the individual molecule. PIr(qnx) has been found to exist as both black and red forms in the solid state. The black form can be transformed into the red form upon its exposure to acetonitrile or propiononitrile vapor, whereas no response was observed when it was exposed to other volatile organic compounds. To understand the vapochromic and vapoluminescent behaviors, we determined crystal structures of both forms by X-ray diffraction. In addition, we employed density functional theory in investigating weak intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions in the two forms.

Abstract:Eight neutral iridium(III) complexes (Ir1–Ir8) containing an electron-withdrawing pentafluorosulfanyl (−SF5) group on cyclometalated ligands with different ancillary ligands were synthesized and investigated. 2-(3/4-(Pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)pyrimidine (for Ir1 and Ir2), 1-(3/4-(pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)isoquinoline (for Ir3 and Ir4), and 2-(3/4-(pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)pyridine (for Ir5–Ir8) were chosen as cyclometalated ligands and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione (for Ir1–Ir4), tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate (for Ir5 and Ir6), and bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide (for Ir7 and Ir8) were used as ancillary ligands. The crystal structures of Ir1, Ir3, Ir4, Ir6, and Ir8 also confirmed the identities of these complexes. Complexes Ir1, Ir2, and Ir5–Ir8 exhibit sky blue to green emissions (480–533 nm) with high photoluminescence quantum efficiency yields up to 94.7% in CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature. Complexes Ir3 and Ir4 are red phosphors (λmax = 607 nm, Φ = 76.8% for Ir3 and λmax = 627 nm, Φ = 49.2% for Ir4, respectively). Theoretical calculations were carried out to provide a further study of the orbital distributions and electronic states of eight Ir(III) complexes. Additionally, ion detection studies reveal that Ir2 has the potential for detecting Hg2+ ion.

Abstract:A series of phosphorescent zwitterionic iridium(III) complexes, with 4-carboxy-2, 2'-bipyridine-4'-carboxylate (Hdcbpy) as ancillary ligand, Ir(C(wedge)N)(2)(Hdcbpy) (C(wedge)N = 1-phenylpyrazole (ppz), 1-phenyl-pyridine (ppy), 2-(4',6'-difluoro-phenyl)pyridine (dfppy), 1-phenyl-isoquinoline (piq), dibenzo[f,h]quinoxaline (dbq)), were prepared and characterized. Their photophysical properties were studied, and intense luminescence emissions were observed based on metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer ((3)MLCT), ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer ((3)LLCT), ligand-centered transitions ((3)LC, i.e., (3)pi --> pi*), or intraligand-charge-transfer ((3)ILCT) excited states, which were confirmed by theoretical calculations. The quantum yield of Ir(dfppy)(2)(Hdcbpy) is as high as 0.106 in aqueous solution. With Hdcbpy as a hydrophilic part, their amphiphilic structures as further confirmed by X-ray single crystal data endow them with different solubilities in phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0). The compounds were successfully applied as luminescent dyes for cell imaging in aqueous solution. Their different stain ability in cell imaging was fairly well supported by the experimental data based on the measurement of oil/water partition coefficients and encapsulation/release with liposomes.

Abstract:A novel series of neutral iridium complexes (Ir1-Ir3) bearing salicylaldimine ligands with dibenzosuberane core was synthesized and well characterized through elemental analysis, FT-IR, H-1, and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Molecular structures of Ir2 and Ir3 were determined by single-crystal XRD analysis and thus revealed that distorted-octahedral geometry was found around the metal center. Photophysical and electrochemical properties of the complexes (Ir1-Ir3) have been comprehensively investigated. Ir1-Ir3 exhibits the blue-shifted emission in solution (lambda max 383-393 nm) in comparison with their solid-state emission (lambda max 594-599 nm). Ir1-Ir3 are stable in the air up to 380 degrees C, as established over thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to provide some insight into the electronic structures of Ir1-Ir3. Furthermore, Ir1-Ir3 exhibited aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties when hexane was added to dichloromethane solutions of Ir1-Ir3. Photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of aggregated species of Ir1-Ir3 (PLQYs = 10-27%) are effectively increased in comparison to those in pure dichloromethane solutions. Abstract:On the basis of rational molecular design, the tricolour luminescence switching of an Ir(iii) complex is achieved for the first time. The transformation between two crystalline states and an amorphous state is responsible for the switching behaviour of this complex between blue, green and yellow states. Solvent molecules are shown to play a crucial role in the crystallization and luminescence processes.

Abstract:Organic solid-state luminescence switching (SLS) materials with the ability to reversibly switch the luminescence by altering the mode of molecular packing without changing the chemical structures of their component molecules have attracted considerable interest in recent years. In this work, we design and synthesize a new class of 2,7-diphenylfluorenone derivatives (compounds 1–6) that exhibit prominent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties with high solid-state fluorescence quantum yields (29–65%). Among them, 2,7-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-9H-fluoren-9-one (2) and 2,7-bis(4-ethylphenyl)-9H-fluoren-9-one (6) display reversible stimuli-responsive solid-state luminescence switching. Compound 2 transforms between red and yellow crystals (the emission wavelength switches between 601 and 551 nm) under the stimuli of temperature, pressure, or solvent vapor. Similarly, compound 6 exhibits SLS behavior, with luminescence switching between orange (571 nm) and yellow (557 nm). Eight X-ray single-crystal structures, characterization of the photophysical properties, powder X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry provide insight into the structure–property relationships of the solid-state fluorescence behavior. The results indicate that the variable solid-state luminescence of the fluorenone derivatives is attributed to the formation of different excimers in different solid phases. Additionally, the stimuli-responsive reversible phase transformations of compounds 2 and 6 involve a structural transition between π–π stacking-directed packing and hydrogen bond-directed packing. The results also demonstrate the feasibility of our design strategy for new solid-state luminescence switching materials: introduction of both π–π stacking and hydrogen bonding into an AIE structure to obtain a metastable solid/crystalline state luminescence system.

Abstract:Two novel iridium(III) complexes, [Ir(dfppy)(2)(pmc)] and [Ir(ppy)(2)(pmc)] (dfppy = 2-(4', 6'-difluoro-phenyl) pyridine, ppy = 1-phenyl-pyridine), were designed and synthesized using 2- carboxyl-pyrimidine (Hpmc) as an ancillary ligand. Single crystals were obtained and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The tetrametallic complexes {[((CN)-N-boolean AND)(2)Ir(mu-pmc)](3)EuCl3} ((CN)-N-boolean AND = dfppy, ppy) were synthesized using the iridium(III) complexes as "ligands". Photophysical and theoretical studies indicate that [Ir(dfppy) 2(pmc)] is more suitable for sensitizing the emission of Eu(III) ions than [Ir(ppy)(2)(pmc)].

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between structure and properties is critical to the development of solid-state luminescence materials with desired characteristics and performance optimization. In this work, we elaborately designed and synthesized a pair of mononuclear iridium(III) complexes with similar structures but different degrees of cationization. [Ir2-f][2PF6] with two counterions is obtained by simple N-methylation of the ancillary ligand of [Ir1-f][PF6] which is a classic cationic iridium(III) complex. Such a tiny modification results in tremendously different optical properties in dilute solutions and powders. [Ir1-f][PF6] exhibits weak light in solution but enhanced emission in solid-state as well as poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix, indicative of its aggregation-induced emission (AIE) activity. On the sharp contrary, [Ir2-f][2PF6] is an aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) emitter showing strong emission in the isolated state but nearly nonemissive in aggregation states. Benefiting from the appealing characteristics of mechanochromic luminescence and AIE behavior, [Ir1-f][PF6] has been successfully applied in reversible re-writable data recording and cell imaging. These results might provide deep insights into AIE and ACQ phenomenon of iridium(III) complexes and facilitate the development of phosphorescent materials with promising properties.

Abstract:A novel diarylethene-based iridium(III) complex was synthesized as a phosphorescence probe for monitoring living cells. The switchable phosphorescence complex in solution and within living cells was controlled by two distinguishable visible-light irradiations, which suggests that this complex can be developed as a promising probe with weak photodamage for biological samples.
Benzoimidazole-Based Cyclometalated Ir(III) Complexes: Syntheses, Structures and Luminescence Modulation/Switching

Abstract:Two iridium complexes[Ir(ppy)(qbiH)]NO3 (1 center dot NO3) and[Ir(ppy)(qbi)] (2) have been synthesized. Their crystal structures indicate that an[Ir(ppy)(2)](+) unit is chelated by a neutral benzoimidazole-based ligand qbiH in 1 center dot NO3, while anion ligand qbi(-) in 2. The different deprotonation degrees of ligands qbiH and qbi(-) in the two complexes lead to their clear differences in luminescence both in solution and in solid state. Complexes 1 center dot NO3 and 2 in CH2Cl2 show the emissions at 581 and 574 nm, respectively. In solid state, a red emission at 611 nm was observed for 1 center dot NO3, while an orange emission at 598 nm for 2. It is interesting that both 1 center dot NO3 and 2 in solid state exhibited luminescence switching between red emission and orange emission, upon meeting Et3N/TFA vapor. This is due to the acid/base-induced structural interconversion between ligand qbiH and ligand qbi(-) in complexes 1 center dot NO3 and 2. Moreover, we discuss the relationship between structure and luminescence for 1 center dot NO3 and 2.
Controllable Synthesis of Iridium(iii)-Based Aggregation-Induced Emission And/or Piezochromic Luminescence Phosphors by Simply Adjusting the Substitution on Ancillary Ligands

Abstract:Three multifunctional cationic iridium(III)-based materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and piezochromic luminescence (PCL) behavior have been rationally designed with the help of the theoretical calculations and successfully synthesized. All complexes contain the same cyclometalated ligand, 1-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1H-pyrazole (dfppz), while functionalized ancillary ligands with different substitution are used to control their photophysical properties. Complex 1 and 2 with ancillary ligands modified with aliphatic chains and carbazole end-capped alkyl groups, respectively, undergo remarkable and reversible changes in emission color in the solid state upon grinding or heating. In addition, 2, characterized as having the (ILCT)-I-3 excited-state feature, simultaneously exhibits an interesting AIE behavior, showing almost non-emission in good solution but enhanced emission in its solid state. Further modification of 2 by attachment of a tert-butyl group on the ligand obtains complex 3, an amorphous material, which only displays AIE activity. More importantly, with the merits of reversible PCL and AIE properties of 2, the rare multi-channel color change and temperature-dependent emission behavior of the iridium(III) complex have been observed. Furthermore, the emissive nanoaggregates of 2 can be efficiently quenched by picric acid, making it a highly sensitive chemosensor for explosives, which is demonstrated in iridium(III)-based luminescent materials for the first time.

Abstract:Herein we designed and synthesized a series of cationic iridium(III) complexes with a phenylbenzoimidazole-based cyclometalated ligand, containing different numbers of carbazole moieties from zero to three (complexes 1-4). The photophysical and electrochemical properties of this series have been systematically investigated. The complexes exhibit strong luminescence in both solution and in neat films, as well as excellent redox reversibility. Introducing carbazole groups into the complexes is found to lead to substantially enhanced photoluminescence quantum efficiency in the neat film, but has little effect on the emitting color and excited-state characteristics as supported by density functional theory (DFT) results. DFT calculations also suggest that functionalized complexes 2-4 reveal better hole-transporting properties than 1. More importantly, all complexes effectively reduce the degradation reaction to some extent in metal-centered ((MC)-M-3) excited-states, demonstrating their stability. Further studies indicate that restriction of opening of the structures in the (MC)-M-3 state is caused by the unique molecular conformation of the phenylbenzoimidazole ligand, which is first demonstrated here in cationic iridium(III) complexes without intramolecular p-p stacking. These results presented here would provide valuable information for designing and synthesizing highly efficient and stable cationic iridium(III) complexes suitable for the optical devices.

Abstract:Considerable studies have been made on iridium complexes during the past 10 years, due to their high quantum efficiency, color tenability, and potential applications in various areas. In this chapter, we review the synthesis, structure, and photophysical properties of luminescent Ir complexes, as well as their applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), biological labeling, sensitizers of luminescence, and chemosensors.

Abstract:Iridium(III) complexes with near-infrared (NIR) emission are still less well developed. In this work, two new NIR emissive mono- and dinuclear iridium complexes were designed and synthesized via introducing the tetraphenlyethene Schiff base ligands. Interestingly, both complexes display mechanochromic luminescent (MCL) behavior, and the MCL mechanism can be attributed to the atypical physical phase transformations from amorphization to crystallization.
