Abstract:Semicrystalline polymers are categorized as either mobile or fixed crystals, depending on chain mobility in the crystalline region. In this work, we investigate molecular dynamics and phase structure in the cocrystal consisting of fixed and mobile polymer crystals by solid-state (ss) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that (i) the mobile component begins large amplitude motions associated with crystal-crystal transition, while fixed ones keep their rigidity in the cocrystal, and (ii) asymmetric molecular dynamics leads to nanosegregations into mobile- and fixed-rich domains in the cocrystal below the melting temperature (Tm). The observed phase separation induced by asymmetric molecular dynamics is similar to the phase separation of the miscible amorphous polymer blend; however, it is limited to two dimensions due to the parallel packing of the stems inside the cocrystal, as well as chain connectivity at the crystalline-amorphous boundary.

Abstract:Calcium carbonate was surface treated by acrylic acid monomer, its polymerization with varied mean molecular weight and PS/PAA copolymer. Coating efficiencies for these four series of surface-treated calcium carbonate were investigated. They differ from each other in many aspects. We hypothesize that the treating molecules bond to and align on the particle surface in different ways before and after monolayer coverage was reached. NIR spectra of surface-treated samples studied not only reflected the amount of bonded treating agents by means of the value of absorbance, but also gave rich structural information of surface layer. This gave us a powerful means to investigate the interface of particle surface.

Abstract:Many organisms use amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) during crystalline calcium carbonate biomineralization, as a means to control particle shape/size and phase stability. Here, we present an in situ small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) study of the mechanisms and kinetics of ACC crystallization at rapid time scales (seconds). Combined with offline solid and solution characterization, we show that ACC crystallizes to vaterite via a three-stage process. First, hydrated and disordered ACC forms, then rapidly transforms to more ordered and dehydrated ACC; in conjunction with this, vaterite forms via a spherulitic growth mechanism. Second, when the supersaturation of the solution with respect to vaterite decreases sufficiently, the mechanism changes to ACC dissolution and vaterite crystal growth. Abstract:Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is an essential component present during the early stages of biomineralization of many calcifying organisms, which is used as a precursor of crystalline calcium carbonate phases. Here, we performed X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy experiments on ACC which show that the amount of adsorbed water has a strong control over its diffusive dynamics. Results of crystallization experiments under conditions of controlled humidity indicate that the adsorbed water is enough to spark crystallization of calcite. A direct proportionality is found between the relative humidity of the environment and the final size of the calcite crystals. Different hypotheses are made to explain this result, with the confinement within the amorphous matrix being the main suspect of controlling the size of the crystallites. Abstract:A low molecular weight organic molecule, 1,3-diamino-2-hydroxypropane-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid, has been found that it could stabilize amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) for at least three days in a gas diffusion reaction, also it could control the formation of hierarchical calcite crystals. The transformation process from ACC to calcite crystals has been systematically studied. Nucleation sites and intermediates were both captured by time-dependent experiments. It is found that ACC could form a close packed film on the substrate and part of the nucleation occurred on the film. After nucleation, another form of ACC conglomeration was found to be dissolved from inside. The intermediates on the substrate were found to be composed of fibres. A rod-dumbbell-sphere transformation phenomenon was observed. Selective adsorption and the mesocrystal transformation mechanism are assumed to play a key role in the formation of intermediates with different shapes and structures.

Abstract:Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is widely known as a metastable precursor in the formation of crystalline calcium carbonate biominerals. However, the exact role of water during the crystallization of ACC remains elusive. Here, a novel ACC with high specific surface area and nanopores is synthesized by solvent-induced dehydration and amorphization of crystalline calcium carbonate hexahydrate (ikaite), denoted as I-ACC. Comparing I-ACC and typical spherical ACC (S-ACC) nanoparticles, it reveals that the crystallization pathways of ACC under heating or pressure are not dictated by the total amount of water in ACC as reported, but rather the interfacial water that is released from ACC bulk and adsorbed on the surface of the particles. We show that the crystallization pathways of I-ACC to calcite single crystal with high specific surface area or vaterite can be easily controlled by tuning the release of water during heating. In addition, densely packed pure vaterite can be obtained via pressured-induced transformation of I-ACC at room temperature, which is otherwise difficult to form using S-ACC. These insights contribute to the understanding of the biological control of mineral formation via amorphous precursors and offer new opportunities to bioprocess inspired fabrication of strong bulk material at room temperature.

Abstract:Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is a disordered phase of common CaCO3 polymorphs (calcite, aragonite, and vaterite) with critical roles in biomineralization and in calcium carbonate-based cements. Here, we present chemical mechanisms by which the structure of anhydrous ACC controls the resulting mechanical and fracture properties studied with classical molecular dynamics simulations. Anhydrous ACC structures were generated through the compression of Ca2+ and CO3 2– ions with progressively slower compression rates, which resulted in an increasing strength. Increases in the elastic constants were associated with decreasing Ca2+···Ca2+ coordination numbers and smaller Ca···Ca···C and Ca···Ca···O bond angles. Fracture of anhydrous ACC was also studied under far-field loading conditions. Surprisingly, at lower temperatures (0.1 K), cracks were 50% longer than at higher temperatures (150 and 300 K). This temperature-dependency in crack growth arises from increased energy dissipation at higher temperatures, allowing for relaxation of the applied load without forming a new surface area from crack growth. Energy dissipation mechanisms include changes in the O···Ca···O bond angles between 40 and 50° and associated changes in the Ca2+ ion and CO3 2– ion coordination structure. These results on fracture in disordered calcium carbonate can be used to evaluate and predict the stability of systems that contain these solid phases.

Abstract:Large single crystals of calcite are generated from amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) using a dynamic control strategy in which local heating is used to define when and where nucleation occurs. Morphologies ranging from discs to serpentine strips are generated by independently controlling nucleation and growth, and the mechanism and energetics of the transformation are studied using in situ transmission electron microscopy. The use of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) as a precursor phase affords organisms with outstanding control over the formation of calcite and aragonite biominerals. Essential to this strategy is that the ACC is maintained within confined volumes in the absence of bulk water. This ensures that the ACC undergoes a pseudomorphic transformation and that the organism can independently control nucleation and growth. However, comparable control has proven hard to achieve in synthetic systems. Here, a straightforward method is demonstrated for controlling the crystallization of ACC thin films in which nucleation is first triggered using a heated probe, and then growth is sustained by incubating the film at a lower temperature. By independently controlling nucleation and growth, sub‐millimeter calcite single crystals can be generated when and where it is desired, morphologies ranging from discs to squares to serpentine strips can be created, and arrays of crystals formed. The mechanism and energetics of crystallization of the ACC are studied using in situ transmission electron microscopy and continuity between the ACC and calcite at the growth front is demonstrated. It is envisaged that this method can be applied to the formation of large single crystals of alternative functional materials that form via amorphous precursor phases.

Abstract:Many organisms use amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) and control its stability by various additives and water; however, the underlying mechanisms are yet unclear. Here, the effect of water and inorganic additives commonly found in biology on the dynamics of the structure of ACC during crystallization and on the energetics of this process is studied. Total X-ray scattering and pair distribution function analysis show that the short- and medium-range order of all studied ACC samples are similar; however, the use of in situ methodologies allow the observation of small structural modifications that are otherwise easily overlooked. Isothermal calorimetric coupled with microgravimetric measurements show that the presence of Mg2+ and of PO43- in ACC retards the crystallization whereas increased water content accelerates the transformation. The enthalpy of ACC with respect to calcite appears, however, independent of the additive concentration but decreases with water content. Surprisingly, the enthalpic contribution of water is compensated for by an equal and opposite entropic term leading to a net independence of ACC thermodynamic stability on its hydration level. Together, these results point toward a kinetic stabilization effect of inorganic additives and water, and may contribute to the understanding of the biological control of mineral stability.

Abstract:Amorphous phases hold great promise in diverse applications and are widely used by organisms as precursors to produce biominerals with complex morphologies and excellent properties. However, the stabilization and crystallization mechanisms of amorphous phases are not fully understood, especially in the presence of additives. Here, using amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) as the model system, we systematically investigate the crystallization pathways of amorphous phases in the presence of poly(Aspartic acid) (pAsp) with various chain lengths. Results show that pure ACC transforms into a mixture of calcite and vaterite via the typical dissolution–recrystallization mechanism and 3 % of Asp monomer exhibits negligible effect. However, pAsp with a chain length of only 10 strongly inhibits the aggregation-induced formation of vaterite spheres while slightly delaying the growth of calcite via classical ion-by-ion attachment, thus kinetically favoring the formation of calcite. Moreover, the inhibition effect of calcite growth from solution ions becomes more prominent with the increase of pAsp chain length or concentration, which significantly improves the stability of the amorphous phase and leads to crystallization of spherical or elongated calcite via the nonclassical particle attachment mechanism after pseudomorphic transformation of ACC into vaterite nanoparticles. These results allow us to reach a more comprehensive understanding of the stabilization and crystallization mechanism of ACC in the presence of additives and provide guidelines for controlling the polymorph selection and morphology of crystals during the crystallization of amorphous precursors.

Abstract:A continuum density field formulation with particle-scale resolution is constructed to simultaneously incorporate the orientation dependence of interparticle interactions and the rotational invariance of the system, a fundamental but challenging issue in modeling the structure and dynamics of a broad range of material systems across variable scales. This generalized phase field crystal-type approach is based upon the complete expansion of particle direct correlation functions and the concept of isotropic tensors. Through applications to the modeling of various two- and three-dimensional crystalline structures, our study demonstrates the capability of bond-angle control in this continuum field theory and its effects on the emergence of ordered phases, and provides a systematic way of performing tunable angle analyses for crystalline micro structures.

The mechanisms by which modifiers enable these shape-preserving transformations are poorly understood. We used in situ liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy to follow the evolution from amorphous calcium carbonate to calcite in the presence of additives. A combination of contrast analysis and infrared spectroscopy shows that Mg ions, which are widely present in seawater and biological fluids, alter the transformation pathway in a concentration-dependent manner. The ions bring excess (structural) water into the amorphous bulk so that a direct transformation is triggered by dehydration in the absence of morphological changes. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest Mg-incorporated water induces structural fluctuations, allowing transformation without the need to nucleate a separate crystal. Thus, the obtained calcite retains the original morphology of the amorphous state, biomimetically achieving the morphological control of crystals seen in biominerals.

Abstract:Investigation on the formation mechanism of crystals via amorphous precursors has attracted a lot of interests in the last years. The formation mechanism of thermodynamically meta-stable vaterite in pure alcohols in the absence of any additive is less known. Herein, the crystallization process of vaterite microdisc mesocrystals via proto-vaterite amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) in isopropanol was tracked by using Ca K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) characterization under cryo-condition. Ca K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra show that the absorption edges of the Ca ions of the vaterite samples with different crystallization times shift to lower photoelectron energy while increasing the crystallization times from 0.5 to 20 d, indicating the increase of crystallinity degree of calcium carbonate. Ca K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra exhibit that the coordination number of the nearest neighbor atom O around Ca increases slowly with the increase of crystallization time and tends to be stable as 4.3 (±1.4). Crystallization time dependent XANES and EXAFS analyses indicate that short-range ordered structure in proto-vaterite ACC gradually transform to long-range ordered structure in vaterite microdisc mesocrystals via a non-classical crystallization mechanism.

Abstract:Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is a metastable phase often observed during low temperature inorganic synthesis and biomineralization. ACC transforms with aging or heating into a less hydrated form, and with time crystallizes to calcite or aragonite. The energetics of transformation and crystallization of synthetic and biogenic (extracted from California purple sea urchin larval spicules, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus ) ACC were studied using isothermal acid solution calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. Transformation and crystallization of ACC can follow an energetically downhill sequence: more metastable hydrated ACC → less metastable hydrated ACC⇒anhydrous ACC ∼ biogenic anhydrous ACC⇒vaterite → aragonite → calcite. In a given reaction sequence, not all these phases need to occur. The transformations involve a series of ordering, dehydration, and crystallization processes, each lowering the enthalpy (and free energy) of the system, with crystallization of the dehydrated amorphous material lowering the enthalpy the most. ACC is much more metastable with respect to calcite than the crystalline polymorphs vaterite or aragonite. The anhydrous ACC is less metastable than the hydrated, implying that the structural reorganization during dehydration is exothermic and irreversible. Dehydrated synthetic and anhydrous biogenic ACC are similar in enthalpy. The transformation sequence observed in biomineralization could be mainly energetically driven; the first phase deposited is hydrated ACC, which then converts to anhydrous ACC, and finally crystallizes to calcite. The initial formation of ACC may be a first step in the precipitation of calcite under a wide variety of conditions, including geological CO 2 sequestration.

Abstract:Phase transformations of carbonates are relevant to a wide range of biological, environmental, and industrial processes. Over the past decade, it emerged that crystallization pathways in these systems can be quite complex. Metastable intermediates such as amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) were found to greatly impact composition, structure, and properties of more stable phases. However, it has been challenging to create predictive models. Rapid transformation of ACC in bulk has been one obstacle in the determination of nucleation rates. Herein, it is reported that confinement in microfluidic droplets allows separating in time the precipitation of ACC and subsequent nucleation and growth of crystalline CaCO3. An upper limit of 1.2 cm-3 s-1 was determined for the steady-state crystal nucleation rate in the presence of ACC at ambient conditions. This rate has implications for the formation of calcium carbonate in biomineralization, bio-inspired syntheses, and carbon sequestration.

Abstract:Abstract Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is an important intermediate in the formation of crystalline CaCO 3 biominerals, where its crystallization is controlled using soluble additives. However, although this transformation often occurs in the solid state, experiments mainly focus on the effect of additives on ACC crystallization in solution. This paper addresses this issue and compares the crystallization, in solution and in the solid state, of ACC precipitated in the presence of a range of additives. Surprisingly, these results show that some additives exhibit a Janus behavior, where they retard crystallization in solution, yet accelerate it in the solid state. This is observed for all of the larger molecules examined, while the small molecules retard crystallization in both solution and the solid state.
