Abstract:Selectively detecting nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) is play a crucial role in anti-terrorism and border security due to their frequent uses and impacted human life. Therefore, operative approaches for detecting explosives are highly obligatory. Various chromophores have been reported to detect NACs; however, these chromophores are very complex in synthesis and have tedious work-up and expensive precursors. In this manuscript, we report the synthesis of oligo(p-phenylenevinylene) ( PHPA ) by Knoevenagel condensation, which possess aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property which used for detecting NACs. Non-covalent interactions between PHPA and NACs afford a significant decrease in fluorescence emission. PHPA shows fluorescence turn-off with picric acid (PA), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and p-nitrophenol (NP) among the NACs used. In addition, 1 H-NMR, IR, and UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy studies show that the emission quenching of PHPA chromophore originated from the complex formation via H-bonding between PHPA and NACs. The quenching constant calculated to be 9.86 × 10 4 M -1 , 2.56 × 10 4 M -1 , and 9.96 × 10 4 M -1 for PA, DNP, and NP, with low. detection limit calculated to be 0.62 μM, 1.7 μM, and 5.3 μM, respectively. Easy synthesis and mountable production of this chromophore in bulk ensure their extensive future application for real-time explosive detection.
