Abstract:Knowing that realistic defects in materials are not simple but complex which influence inspection results, it is most important that the NDT/E of materials provide quantitative information of defects such as size, length, depth and orientation so as to accurately and efficiency predict a structures integrity and lifespan. Here we propose the gradient gray level analysis based on least square minimization, which can be applied for the quantification of complex defects in a variety of detection techniques that allow imaging. In this paper, we obtained 4 original images (representing different direction), of the interaction between complex defects and magnetic field distribution, from experiments using the magnetic flux leakage testing (MFL). The mean of these images was then computed and the gradient of the mean image is obtained using a novel least square minimization (LSM) approach, which calculates the spatial derivatives efficiently, mapping out defect region whiles preserving boundaries and hidden image information important for quantification. Based on results, this approach has shown its ability to extract and quantify defects with high precision given its perimeter, area and depth. This significantly eliminates errors associated with output analysis as results can be clearly seen, interpreted and understood.
