Abstract:This is an introductory review of the physics of topological quantum matter with cold atoms. Topological quantum phases, originally discovered and investigated in condensed matter physics, have recently been explored in a range of different systems, which produced both fascinating physics findings and exciting opportunities for applications. Among the physical systems that have been considered to realize and probe these intriguing phases, ultracold atoms become promising platforms due to their high flexibility and controllability. Quantum simulation of topological phases with cold atomic gases is a rapidly evolving field, and recent theoretical and experimental developments reveal that some toy models originally proposed in condensed matter physics have been realized with this artificial quantum system. The purpose of this article is to introduce these developments. The article begins with a tutorial review of topological invariants and the methods to control parameters in the Hamiltonians of neutral atoms. Next, topological quantum phases in optical lattices are introduced in some detail, especially several celebrated models, such as the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, the Hofstadter-Harper model, the Haldane model and the Kane-Mele model. The theoretical proposals and experimental implementations of these models are discussed. Notably, many of these models cannot be directly realized in conventional solid-state experiments. The newly developed methods for probing the intrinsic properties of the topological phases in cold-atom systems are also reviewed. Finally, some topological phases with cold atoms in the continuum and in the presence of interactions are discussed, and an outlook on future work is given.

Abstract:A two-component fermion model with conventional two-body interactions was recently shown to have anyonic excitations. We here propose a scheme to physically implement this model by transforming each chain of two two-component fermions to the two capacitively coupled chains of superconducting devices. In particular, we elaborate how to achieve the wanted operations to create and manipulate the topological quantum states, providing an experimentally feasible scenario to access the topological memory and to build the anyonic interferometry.
Topological quantum optical states in quasiperiodic cold atomic chains

Abstract:Topological quantum optical states in one-dimensional (1D) quasiperiodic cold atomic chains are studied in this work. We propose that by introducing incommensurate modulations on the interatomic distances of 1D periodic atomic chains, the off-diagonal Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model can be mimicked, although the crucial difference is the existence of long-range dipole-dipole interactions. The discrete band structures with respect to the modulation phase, which plays the role of a dimension extension parameter, are calculated for finite chains beyond the nearest-neighbor approximation. It is found that the present system indeed supports nontrivial topological states localized over the boundaries. Despite the presence of long-range dipole-dipole interactions that leads to an asymmetric band structure, it is demonstrated that this system inherits the topological properties of two-dimensional integer quantum Hall systems. The spectral position, for both real and imaginary frequencies, and number of these topologically protected edge states are still governed by the gap-labeling theorem and characterized by the topological invariant, namely, the (first) Chern number, indicating the validity of bulk-boundary correspondence. Due to the fractal spectrum arising from the quasiperiodicity in a substantially wide range of system parameters, our system provides a large number of topological gaps and optical states readily for practical use. It is also revealed that a substantial proportion of the topological edge states are highly subradiant with extremely low decay rates, which therefore offer an appealing route for controlling the emission of external quantum emitters and achieving high-fidelity quantum state storage.

Observation of Non-Hermitian Skin Effect and Topology in Ultracold Atoms

Abstract:The non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), the accumulation of eigen wavefunctions at boundaries of open systems, underlies a variety of exotic properties that defy conventional wisdom. While NHSE and its intriguing impact on band topology and dynamics have been observed in classical or photonic systems, their demonstration in a quantum many-body setting remains elusive. Here we report the experimental realization of a dissipative Aharonov-Bohm chain -- a non-Hermitian topological model with NHSE -- in the momentum space of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. We identify unique signatures of NHSE in the condensate dynamics, and perform Bragg spectroscopy to resolve topological edge states against a background of localized bulk states. Our work sets the stage for further investigation on the interplay of many-body statistics and interactions with NHSE, and is a significant step forward in the quantum control and simulation of non-Hermitian physics.

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of tunable, nonreciprocal quantum transport of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a momentum lattice. By implementing a dissipative Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring in momentum space and sending atoms through it, we demonstrate a directional atom flow by measuring the momentum distribution of the condensate at different times. While the dissipative AB ring is characterized by the synthetic magnetic flux through the ring and the laser-induced loss on it, both the propagation direction and transport rate of the atom flow sensitively depend on these highly tunable parameters. We demonstrate that the nonreciprocity originates from the interplay of the synthetic magnetic flux and the laser-induced loss, which simultaneously breaks the inversion and the time-reversal symmetries. Our results open up the avenue for investigating nonreciprocal dynamics in cold atoms, and highlight the dissipative AB ring as a flexible building element for applications in quantum simulation and quantum information.
Floquet Engineering of Exotic Topological Phases in Systems of Cold Atoms

Abstract:Topological phases with a widely tunable number of edge modes have been extensively studied as a typical class of exotic states of matter with potentially important applications. Although several models have been shown to support such phases, they are not easy to realize in solid-state systems due to the complexity of various intervening factors. Inspired by the realization of synthetic spin-orbit coupling in a cold-atom system [Z. Wu et al., Science 354, 83 (2016)], we propose a periodic quenching scheme to realize large-topological-number phases with multiple edge modes in optical lattices. Via introducing the periodic quenching to the Raman lattice, it is found that a large number of edge modes can be induced in a controllable manner from the static topologically trivial system. Our result provides an experimentally accessible method to artificially synthesize and manipulate exotic topological phases with large topological numbers and multiple edge modes.
Topological photonic states in one-dimensional dimerized ultracold atomic chains

Abstract:We study the topological optical states in one-dimensional (1D) dimerized ultracold atomic chains, as an extension of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. By taking the fully retarded near-field and far-field dipole-dipole interactions into account, we describe the system by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, vastly different from the Hermitian Hamiltonian of the conventional SSH model. We analytically calculate the complex bandstructures for infinitely long chains, and show that the topological invariant, i.e., the complex Zak phase, is still quantized and becomes nontrivial when the dimerization parameter $\beta>0.5$, despite the broken chiral symmetry and non-Hermiticity. We have verified the validity of the bulk-boundary correspondence for this non-Hermitian system by further analyzing the eigenstate distributions along with their inverse participation ratios (IPRs) for finite chains, where topologically protected edge states are unambiguously identified. We also reveal that such topological edge states are robust under symmetry-breaking disorders. For transverse eigenstates, we further discover the increase of localization length of topological edge states with the increase of lattice period due to the presence of strong far-field dipole-dipole interactions. Moreover, the ultra-strong scattering cross section and ultra-narrow linewidth of a single cold atom allow us to observe in more detail about topological states than in conventional systems, such as the frequency shift with respect to the single-atom resonance and the largely tunable bandgap. We envisage these topological photonic states can provide an efficient interface between light and matter.

Abstract:In the recent rapid progress of quantum technology, controlling quantum states has become an important subject of study. Of particular interest is the control of open quantum systems, where the system of interest couples to the environment in an essential way. One formalism to describe open systems is the non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. Photonics systems have been a major platform to study non-Hermitian quantum mechanics due to its flexibility in engineering gain and loss. Ultracold atomic gases have also used to study non-Hermitian quantum mechanics. However, unlike in photonics, gain is not easily controllable in ultracold atomic gases, and exploration of non-Hermitian physics has been limited to control of losses. In this paper, we report engineering of effective gain through evaporative cooling of judiciously chosen initial thermal atoms. We observe resulting formation of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in excited eigenstates of a synthetic lattice. We realize formation of BEC in a topological edge state of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice in the synthetic hyperfine lattice, which can be regarded as atomic laser oscillations at a topological edge mode, i.e. topological atom laser. Gain-loss engineering in ultracold atoms opens a novel prospect to explore open many-body quantum systems.

Topologically Protected Quantum Coherence in a Superatom

Abstract:Exploring the properties and applications of topological quantum states is essential to better understand topological matter. Here, we theoretically study a quasi-one-dimensional topological atom array. In the low-energy regime, the atom array is equivalent to a topological superatom. Driving the superatom in a cavity, we study the interaction between light and topological quantum states. We find that the edge states exhibit topology-protected quantum coherence, which can be characterized from the photon transmission. This quantum coherence helps us to find a superradiance-subradiance transition, and we also study its finite-size scaling behavior. The superradiance-subradiance transition also exists in symmetry-breaking systems. More importantly, it is shown that the quantum coherence of the subradiant edge state is robust to random noises, allowing the superatom to work as a topologically protected quantum memory. We suggest a relevant experiment with three-dimensional circuit QED. Our study may have applications in quantum computation and quantum optics based on topological edge states.

Abstract:Cold-atom experiments in optical lattices offer a versatile platform to realize various topological quantum phases. A key challenge in those experiments is to unambiguously probe the topological order. We propose a method to directly measure the characteristic topological invariants (order) based on the time-of-flight imaging of cold atoms. The method is generally applicable to detection of topological band insulators in one, two, or three dimensions characterized by integer topological invariants. Using detection of the Chern number for the two-dimensional anomalous quantum Hall states and the Chern-Simons term for the three-dimensional chiral topological insulators as examples, we show that the proposed detection method is practical, and robust to typical experimental imperfections such as limited imaging resolution, inhomogeneous trapping potential, and disorder in the system.
Generating Topological Optical Flux Lattices for Ultracold Atoms by Modulated Raman and Radio-Frequency Couplings

Abstract:We propose a scheme to dynamically generate optical flux lattices with nontrivial band topology using amplitude-modulated Raman lasers and radio-frequency (rf) magnetic fields. By tuning the strength of Raman and rf fields, three distinct phases are realized at unit filling for a unit cell. Respectively, these three phases correspond to normal insulator, topological Chern insulator, and semimetal. Nearly nondispersive bands are found to appear in the topological phase, which promises opportunities for investigating strongly correlated quantum states within a simple cold-atom setup. The validity of our proposal is confirmed by comparing the Floquet quasienergies from the evolution operator with the spectrum of the effective Hamiltonian.
Quantum simulation of exotic PT-invariant topological nodal loop bands with ultracold atoms in an optical lattice

Abstract:Since the well-known PT symmetry has its fundamental significance and implication in physics, where PT denotes the combined operation of space-inversion P and time-reversal T, it is extremely important and intriguing to completely classify exotic PT-invariant topological metals and to physically realize them. Here we, for the first time, establish a rigorous classification of topological metals that are protected by the PT symmetry using KO-theory. As a physically realistic example, a PT-invariant nodal loop (NL) model in a 3D Brillouin zone is constructed, whose topological stability is revealed through its PT-symmetry-protected nontrivial Z2 topological charge. Based on these exact results, we propose an experimental scheme to realize and to detect tunable PT-invariant topological NL states with ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, in which atoms with two hyperfine spin states are loaded in a spin-dependent 3D OL and two pairs of Raman lasers are used to create out-of-plane spin-flip hopping with site-dependent phase. Such a realistic cold-atom setup can yield topological NL states, having a tunable ring-shaped band-touching line with the two-fold degeneracy in the bulk spectrum and non-trivial surface states. The states are actually protected by the combined PT symmetry even in the absence of both P and T symmetries, and are characterized by a Z2-type invariant (a quantized Berry phase). Remarkably, we demonstrate with numerical simulations that (i) the characteristic NL can be detected by measuring the atomic transfer fractions in a Bloch-Zener oscillation; (ii) the topological invariant may be measured based on the time-of-flight imaging; and (iii) the surface states may be probed through Bragg spectroscopy. The present proposal for realizing topological NL states in cold atom systems may provide a unique experimental platform for exploring exotic PT-invariant topological physics.

Abstract:Topological insulators are a broad class of unconventional materials that are insulating in the interior but conduct along the edges. This edge transport is topologically protected and dissipationless. Until recently, all existing topological insulators, known as quantum Hall states, violated time-reversal symmetry. However, the discovery of the quantum spin Hall effect demonstrated the existence of novel topological states not rooted in time-reversal violations. Here, we lay out an experiment to realize time-reversal topological insulators in ultra-cold atomic gases subjected to synthetic gauge fields in the near-field of an atom-chip. In particular, we introduce a feasible scheme to engineer sharp boundaries where the "edge states" are localized. Besides, this multi-band system has a large parameter space exhibiting a variety of quantum phase transitions between topological and normal insulating phases. Due to their unprecedented controllability, cold-atom systems are ideally suited to realize topological states of matter and drive the development of topological quantum computing.

Abstract:Cold atoms with laser-induced spin-orbit (SO) interactions provide promising platforms to explore novel quantum physics, in particular the exotic topological phases, beyond natural conditions of solids. The past several years have witnessed important progresses in both theory and experiment in the study of SO coupling and novel quantum states for ultracold atoms. Here we review the physics of the SO coupled quantum gases, focusing on the latest theoretical and experimental progresses of realizing SO couplings beyond one-dimension (1D), and the further investigation of novel topological quantum phases in such systems, including the topological insulating phases and topological superfluids. A pedagogical introduction to the SO coupling for ultracold atoms and topological quantum phases is presented. We show that the so-called optical Raman lattice schemes, which combine the creation of the conventional optical lattice and Raman lattice with topological stability, can provide minimal methods with high experimental feasibility to realize 1D to 3D SO couplings. The optical Raman lattices exhibit novel intrinsic symmetries, which enable the natural realization of topological phases belonging to different symmetry classes, with the topology being detectable through minimal measurement strategies. We introduce how the non-Abelian Majorana modes emerge in the SO coupled superfluid phases which can be topologically nontrivial or trivial, for which a few fundamental theorems are presented and discussed. The experimental schemes for achieving non-Abelian superfluid phases are given. Finally, we point out the future important issues in this rapidly growing research field.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to manipulate a topological spin qubit which is realized with cold atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice. In particular, by introducing a quantum opto-electro-mechanical interface, we are able to first transfer a superconducting qubit state to an atomic qubit state and then to store it into the topological spin qubit. In this way, an efficient topological quantum memory could be constructed for the superconducting qubit. Therefore, we can consolidate the advantages of both the noise resistance of the topological qubits and the scalability of the superconducting qubits in this hybrid architecture.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are an emerging platform for manipulating light on a two-dimensional plane. Existing metasurfaces comprise arrays of optical resonators such as plasmonic antennas or high-index nanorods. In this letter, we describe a new approach to realize metasurfaces based on electronic transitions in two-level systems (TLSs). These metasurfaces can reproduce all of the major results in conventional metasurfaces. In addition, since TLSs can be lossless, tunable, and orders of magnitude smaller than optical resonators, atomic metasurfaces can realize functions that are difficult to achieve with optical resonators. Specifically, we develop quantum scattering theory to describe the interaction between single photons and atomic metasurfaces. Based on the theory, we use a sheet of three-level {\Lambda}-type atoms as an example and theoretically demonstrate dynamically tunable single-photon steering. We further show directional beaming of spontaneously emitted photons from atomic metasurfaces.
Synthetic non-Abelian topological charges in ultracold atomic gases

Abstract:Topological phases associated with non-Abelian charges can exhibit a distinguished bulk-edge correspondence compared with Abelian phases, although elucidating this relationship remains challenging in traditional solid-state systems. In this paper, we propose a theoretical framework for synthesizing non-Abelian quaternion charges in ultracold atomic gases. By designing artificial spin-orbit coupling patterns, the topological edge modes demonstrate a clear correspondence with the band topology determined by various quaternion charges. This paves the way for observing the interface modes whose existence is attributed to the nonconservation multiplication relation, which is fundamental to non-Abelian charges. This scheme can be readily implemented using current ultracold atom techniques, offering a promising approach to explore the intriguing non-Abelian characteristics of the system.

Abstract:Symmetry plays a fundamental role in understanding complex quantum matter, particularly in classifying topological quantum phases, which have attracted great interests in the recent decade. An outstanding example is the time-reversal invariant topological insulator, a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase in the symplectic class of the Altland-Zirnbauer classification. We report the observation for ultracold atoms of a noninteracting SPT band in a one-dimensional optical lattice and study quench dynamics between topologically distinct regimes. The observed SPT band can be protected by a magnetic group and a nonlocal chiral symmetry, with the band topology being measured via Bloch states at symmetric momenta. The topology also resides in far-from-equilibrium spin dynamics, which are predicted and observed in experiment to exhibit qualitatively distinct behaviors in quenching to trivial and nontrivial regimes, revealing two fundamental types of spin-relaxation dynamics related to bulk topology. This work opens the way to expanding the scope of SPT physics with ultracold atoms and studying nonequilibrium quantum dynamics in these exotic systems.
Simulating Z_2 topological insulators with cold atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Abstract:We propose an experimental scheme to simulate and detect the properties of time-reversal invariant topological insulators, using cold atoms trapped in one-dimensional bichromatic optical lattices. This system is described by a one-dimensional Aubry-Andre model with an additional SU(2) gauge structure, which captures the essential properties of a two-dimensional Z2 topological insulator. We demonstrate that topologically protected edge states, with opposite spin orientations, can be pumped across the lattice by sweeping a laser phase adiabatically. This process constitutes an elegant way to transfer topologically protected quantum states in a highly controllable environment. We discuss how density measurements could provide clear signatures of the topological phases emanating from our one-dimensional system.

Abstract:Topological matter is a popular topic in both condensed matter and cold-atom research. In the past decades, a variety of models have been identified with fascinating topological features. Some, but not all, of the models can be found in materials. As a fully controllable system, cold atoms trapped in optical lattices provide an ideal platform to simulate and realize these topological models. Here we present a proposal for synthesizing topological models in cold atoms based on a one-dimensional spin-dependent optical lattice potential. In our system, features such as staggered tunneling, staggered Zeeman field, nearest-neighbor interaction, beyond-near-neighbor tunneling, etc. can be readily realized. They underlie the emergence of various topological phases. Our proposal can be realized with current technology and hence has potential applications in quantum simulation of topological matter.
