Abstract:This study investigates the impact of labor unionization on stock price crash risk. We find that labor unionization is negatively associated with stock price crash risk. Such negative relation is more pronounced when firms can intimate more credible evidence on unfavorable prospects and when firms face more powerful labor unions. Our findings are consistent with the notion that firms take strategic actions to reduce the bargaining advantages enjoyed by labor unions and that labor unions force firms to take less risky investments and discontinue underperformed projects more timely, which leads to lower stock price crash risk.

Abstract:Trade unions in China play an important role of improving labor relations.From wages and rewards to benefits,trade union has promoted labor interests to a certain extent.Besides,the empirical analysis indicates that many employers are willing to establish a trade union in their enterprises and to make payment to trade union so as to enhance cohesion of enterprises and improve production efficiency.In general,the enterprises with higher level of educational and skill are more inclined to establish a trade union and with higher density of union member.The density of union member in enterprises influenced the average wages positively.Trade unions also influenced positively on educational fees of employees,employment and unemployment insurance,endowment insurance and medical insurance,housing fund and housing allowance.

Abstract:In this study, we examine the effects of two key variables associated with union effectiveness on the job performance of employees, and the mechanisms that explain such effects. More specifically, we investigate whether employees' perceptions that their union has a constructive relationship with management (industrial relations climate) and is able to act as an agent for their concerns (union instrumentality) promotes their job performance by enhancing their perceived job security and trust in management. Drawing on three waves of data from 303 employees and their immediate supervisors within 17 private enterprises in China, we find employees' perceptions of union effectiveness influence their job performance by enhancing both their perceived job security and trust in management. These findings are consistent with social exchange theory and conservation of resources theory. This article contributes to the literature by improving our understanding of how unions influence employees' work performance and by explaining how employees' perceptions of the industrial relations climate and union instrumentality influence their job performance. It also sheds light on the important issue of the effectiveness of unions in China, a country where the centrality of the Chinese Communist Party is often considered to have reduced the instrumentality of unions.

Abstract:Social Psychological and Personality Science, Ahead of Print. Research has produced mixed results on the relationship between economic inequality and social and political trust. These studies overrepresent developed countries, cross-sectional designs, and overlook the role of subjective evaluations of inequality. We use 13 waves from 18 Latin American countries over 23 years (above 250,000 participants) to examine the association between structural inequality and fairness evaluations with political and social trust. Multilevel regression analyses for comparative longitudinal surveys suggest that within-country changes in economic inequality over time are negatively associated with political and social trust. However, between-country inequality was negatively related to social trust but not political trust. In addition, fairness evaluations of inequality were positively related to social and political trust. Exploratory analyses revealed that fairness evaluations mediated the negative association between economic inequality and political and social trust. We discussed that fairness evaluations of inequality may explain why inequality affects social and political trust.

Abstract:European Journal of Industrial Relations, Ahead of Print. This article studies how perceptions of worker-management conflict are shaped by individual-level and macro-level variables. Drawing upon data from 33 countries from the 2015 International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), it uses multilevel models to examine how individual perceptions of worker-management conflict are affected by social class, union membership status, and the country-level protection of collective labor rights. The evidence supports the hypothesis that workers and union members perceive more conflict than employers and non-union members. The results also show that, as hypothesized, perceived workplace conflict is lower in countries with stronger protection of workers' collective rights. Finally, contrary to an initial hypothesis, cross-level interactions suggest that in countries where collective rights are more strongly protected, union members perceive more worker-management conflict than non-union members. Contributions to the literature on class and power resources as well as to the recent debate on the "neoliberal convergence" of industrial relations (IR) systems are discussed.

Abstract:Labor unions’ greatest potential for political influence likely arises from their direct connection to millions of individuals at the workplace. There, they may change the ideological positions of both unionizing workers and their non-unionizing management. In this paper, we analyze the workplace-level impact of unionization on workers’ and managers’ political campaign contributions over the 1980-2016 period in the United States. To do so, we link establishment-level union election data with transaction-level campaign contributions to federal and local candidates. In a difference-in-differences design that we validate with regression discontinuity tests and a novel instrumental variables approach, we find that unionization leads to a leftward shift of campaign contributions. Unionization increases the support for Democrats relative to Republicans not only among workers but also among managers, which speaks against an increase in political cleavages between the two groups. We provide evidence that our results are not driven by compositional changes of the workforce and are weaker in states with Right-to-Work laws where unions can invest fewer resources in political activities.

Abstract:In a period of uncertainty, trust in leadership and perceptions of fairness have emerged as pivotal factors for fostering employee identification and affective commitment. Drawing from authentic leadership theory, this leadership style is identified as a crucial antecedent of affective commitment, examining the mediating role of distributive justice and the moderating role of interactional justice. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing data from 302 questionnaires completed by Spanish retail workers. For data analysis, SPSS v.25 was used to generate descriptive statistics, while partial least squares structural equation modeling was applied to test the proposed hypotheses. Our findings revealed that authentic leadership is positively associated with the development of affective commitment, with distributive justice acting as a mediating factor between the two. Furthermore, interactional justice negatively moderates the relationship between distributive justice and affective commitment. Contrary to initial expectations, the second moderation, between authentic leadership and affective commitment, was not found to be significant. The research concludes by discussing the practical implications of the results.

Abstract:Challenging the new political-economic “mainstream” that considers trade unions to be “complicit” in labor market dualization, this article’s analysis of union strategies in Italy and South Korea, most-different union movements perceived as unlikely cases for the pursuit of broader social solidarity, shows that in both countries unions have successively moved away from insider-focused strategies and toward “solidarity for all” in the industrial relations arena as well as in their social policy preferences. Furthermore, unions explored new avenues of political agency, often in alliance with civil society organizations. This convergent trend toward a social model of unionism is ascribed to a response of unions to a “double crisis”: that is, a socioeconomic crisis, which takes the form of a growing periphery of the labor market associated with growing social exclusion, and a sociopolitical crisis, which takes the form of an increasing marginalization of the unions from the political process.

Abstract:Many policymakers and practitioners argue that corporations may become more stakeholder focused if employees are given more power. We study the causal impact of unionization on stakeholders by analyzing how close labor union elections affect environmental and social (E&S) scores. We find that unionization is associated with an increase in internal social scores that primarily benefit employees and a decrease in external E&S scores that primarily benefit non-employees. The negative effects on external E&S are amplified when firms have greater financial constraints. The effects on both internal and external E&S are magnified when labor unions have more bargaining power. Our results suggest that policymakers consider implications for all stakeholders before implementing policies that prioritize the corporate influence of one stakeholder group.
A Test of Labor Union Social Responsibility

Abstract:Social responsibility is addressed to corporations, but can also be applied to other powerful organizations. This study tests the impact of labor union social responsibility on key measures of labor union attachment. After developing a scale of labor union social responsibility, craft union apprentice workers were surveyed and their responses analyzed with structural equation modeling. Labor union social responsibility was directly and positively related to union commitment and job satisfaction. Union commitment and job satisfaction fully mediated the negative relationship between labor union social responsibility and propensity to withdraw from the union, and the positive relationship between labor union social responsibility and union participation. The results suggest that labor union social responsibility can enhance union attachment and inform union strategy.

Abstract:This paper addresses the question of why labour legislation produces diverse, often opposing, responses among sectors of the population that apparently benefit from it. In particular, it explores the changes in the attitudes of unionized Spanish workers to the social reforms between 1870 and 1930. These workers had previously rejected state intervention in labour relations. Since 1870, most continued without calling for social laws, but occasionally demanded the application of those already approved. A second current among them, organized in anarcho-syndicalist associations, reiterated their opposition to those reforms. A third trend, grouped around socialist organizations, initially rejected labour legislation, but ended up supporting it. The analysis presented here aims to explain these trade-union attitudes by examining their expressions in the press, in their manifestos and public statements, and in the labour conflicts. It shows that these attitudes were based on one of the two assumptions about the social relations that shaped workers conceptions and actions at the time: "sociable human nature" and "objective social structure." Its main thesis is that these two assumptions about what society was emerged from the partial reformulation or rejection of prior conceptions that had driven trade-union actions until the late nineteenth century.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the trust-based mechanisms underlying the relationship between ethical leadership and followers’ organizational citizenship behavior. Based on three-wave survey data obtained from 184 employees and their supervisors, we find that affective trust mediates the impact of ethical leadership on organizational citizenship behaviors directed at the organization and co-workers. In addition, we find that affective trust mediates the relationship between cognitive trust and follower’s organizational citizenship behaviors. Our findings suggest that both affective and cognitive trust play an important role in the social-exchange processes that underlie the relationship between ethical leadership and the discretionary behavior of followers.
Social Trust and Anti-immigrant Attitudes in Europe: A Longitudinal Multi-Level Analysis

Abstract:Research investigating how social conditions influence attitudes about immigrants has focused primarily on demographic and economic factors as potential threat inducing contexts that lead to anti-immigrant sentiment. However, the empirical evidence supporting this link is mixed, while social cohesion indicators such as the influence of social trust, have largely been left unexamined. This article uses the European Social Survey (2002–2016) to test how differences in social trust, both within and between countries influence attitudes about immigrants. Results from longitudinal analyses show that countries with higher levels of social trust have more favorable attitudes toward immigrants, and while changes in social trust over time are small, they result in comparably large changes in anti-immigrant attitudes, even when controlling for other social factors. These results are robust across different model specifications and data sources.

Abstract:Trust and team communication are central aspects for the achievement of both individual and common goals, which affect not only work efficiency but also the well-being of its members. In addition, organizational justice could affect these indicators, as well as the perception of collective efficacy within organizations, in this case, schools. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of organizational justice on teachers’ subjective well-being, and how this is affected/mediated by collective efficacy. We worked with a sample of 693 teachers across Chile. Multiple mediation analysis was carried out, where the latent variables of the study were estimated (subjective well-being, organizational justice, and two dimensions of collective efficacy). The results indicate that there is full mediation of the collective efficacy dimensions between the predictor–criterion relationship. Our findings allow us to hypothesize that perceptions of collective efficacy are central to explaining well-being as an intrinsic factor.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of an increase in unionization rates (union election wins) and no increase in union membership rates (employees who elect to join as members), we proposed and tested a prediction model of willingness to join a union based on data collected from a broad sample of nonunion subordinates ( N = 136) under the direct supervision of nonunion supervisors in work environments with a current union contract (a contract that covers members and nonmembers alike). As a hypothesized mediation model, we found support for the model, in which humility at work predicted willingness to join through union tolerance (one's tolerance of unions in relation to one's experience with unions in one's work environment). Further, posed as a research question, we asked whether the mediated results might be moderated by one's experience of respect at work in relation to one's supervisor as a contextual variable added to the model. In reference to the link between tolerance and willingness to join, we found the link was conditional on perceived respect, in which the link was present under conditions of high respect but absent under conditions of low respect. As such, within the broader context of common union avoidance tactics used by employers to discourage union membership—tactics directed at subordinates and delivered by supervisors—we anticipated and suggested that the moderated results could be rooted in fear of retaliation from one's supervisor (anticipation of poor treatment from one's supervisor in relation to one's stance on unions). Based on the study results, we provide notes on model expansion and sampling in reference to future studies on union membership and suggest development of engagement tools for subordinates to address aspects of respect with supervisors should they decide to join as members.

Abstract:While union membership has been in decline in recent decades, still 11% of the US workforce belong to unions. The job attitudes of both union and non-union employees are important to organizational success. Various studies suggest that union employees are as satisfied as non-union employees with benefits, wages, and job security. Non-union employees have more favorable attitudes toward the type of work they’re asked to do, autonomy, opportunities for advancement, and supervision. But job attitudes for both union and non-union employees vary widely by the team they are on, according to a summary of Gallup’s employee engagement global database. In this chapter, the authors summarize opinions from within highly unionized organizations, including 239,459 union-member and 42,053 non-union-member employees. They outline key challenges in engaging unionized employees and practical advice compiled from the study of successful organizations across industries.

Abstract:Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a concept which has been approached from various perspectives and application areas. One of these areas regards how individuals perceive this concept and how their own personal characteristics define a given vision of business responsibility. The present study seeks to explore connections between individuals’ sociodemographic characteristics and CSR perception. By using unionized workers as research subjects, analysis techniques applied in Social Media and models based on metric spaces, we explore the attitudes of these subjects towards CSR. Both empirical and theoretical results provide evidence for the existence of a well-behaved relation between sociodemographic aspects and CSR dimensions, which future studies could approach in more depth using techniques based on machine learning.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between union practices and two types of employees' extra-role behaviors, namely, union citizenship behavior (UCB) and employee voice (EV), and the mechanisms that mediate this relationship. Design/methodology/approach Using matched data from 46 union leaders and 279 union members of 33 workplaces in China, this study utilized multilevel structural equation modeling to test the cross-level influences of union practices on employees' extra-role behaviors and the mediation effects. Findings The results show that (1) union practices have a positive impact on employees' UCB and EV, and (2) union practices increase UCB and EV through the improvement of industrial relations (IR) climate at the workplace level, as well as union commitment (UC) and union instrumentality (UI) at the individual level. Research limitations/implications Although the authors collected data from multi-sources (i.e. union leaders and members), the cross-sectional data of this study limited the ability to make casual inferences. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature by providing theoretical explanation and empirical evidence to illustrate the role of union practices in increasing the extra-role behaviors of employees (i.e. UCB and EV). This is of particular importance in elaborating the effectiveness of enterprise unions under the recent reforms in China. In addition, the authors also unpacked the antecedents of extra-role behaviors in the union context by investigating how IR climate, UC and UI mediate the relationship between union practices and extra-role behaviors of employees.

Union membership density and wages: The role of worker, firm, and job-title heterogeneity

Abstract:We examine the association between union density and wages in Portugal where just 10 percent of all workers are union members but nine-tenths of them are covered by collective agreements. Using a unique dataset on workers, firms, and collective bargaining agreements, we examine the union density wage gap in total monthly wages and its sources – namely, worker, firm, and job-title or ‘occupational’ heterogeneity – using the Gelbach decomposition. The most important source of the mark-up associated with union density is the firm fixed effect, reflecting the differing wage policies of more and less unionized workplaces, which explains two-thirds of the wage gap. Next in importance is the job-title fixed effect, capturing occupational heterogeneity across industries. It makes up one-third of the gap, the inference being that the unobserved skills of workers contribute at most only trivially to the union density wage gap. In a separate analysis based on disaggregations of the total wage, it is also found that employers can in part offset the impact of the bargaining power of unions on wages through firm-specific wage arrangements in the form of the wage cushion. Finally, union density is shown to be associated with a modest reduction in wage inequality as the union density wage gap is highest among low-wage workers. This result is driven by the job-title fixed effect, low-wage workers benefiting more from being placed in higher paying ‘occupations.’
