Abstract:This is the last of a trilogy of papers on triangle centers. A fairly obscure "conformal center of gravity" is computed for the class of all isosceles triangles. This calculation appears to be new. A byproduct is the logarithmic capacity or transfinite diameter of such, yielding results consistent with Haegi (1951).

Abstract:The conformai properties of complex Finsler metrics are studied. We first give a characterization of a compact complex Finsler manifold to be globally conformai Kahler. By considering the total holomorphic curvature and total Ricci curvature in the volume preserved conformal classes, we then study the variational properties of Kahler Finsler metrics. By studying the spectral properties of two average metrics, the stabilities of critical Kähler Finsler metrics are verified. Finally, a Yamabe type problem for mean holomorphic Ricci curvature is considered, and a partial existence result is obtained.

Abstract:This is the third and final article in a series which prove the fact that a K-stable Fano manifold admits a Kähler-Einstein metric. In this paper we consider the Gromov-Hausdorff limits of metrics with cone singularities in the case when the limiting cone angle approaches 2 π \pi . We also put all our technical results together to complete the proof of the main theorem.

Abstract:A conformal metric g with constant curvature one and finitely many conical singularities on a compact Riemann surface Sigma can be thought of as the pullback of the standard metric on the 2-sphere by a multivalued locally univalent meromorphic function f on Sigma\{singularities}, called the developing map of the metric g. When the developing map f of such a metric g on the compact Riemann surface Sigma has reducible monodromy, we show that, up to some Mobius transformation on f, the logarithmic differential d(log f) of f turns out to be an abelian differential of the third kind on Sigma, which satisfies some properties and is called a character 1-form of g. Conversely given such an abelian differential omega of the third kind satisfying the above properties, we prove that there exists a unique 1-parameter family of conformal metrics on Sigma such that all these metrics have constant curvature one, the same conical singularities, and have Sigma as one of their character 1-forms. This provides new examples of conformal metrics on compact Riemann surfaces of constant curvature one and with singularities. Moreover we prove that the developing map is a rational function for a conformal metric g with constant curvature one and finitely many conical singularities with angles in 2 pi Z(>1) on the two-sphere.

Abstract:We study unparametrized conformal circles, or called conformal geodesics, study diffeomorphisms mapping conformal circles to conformal circles in pseudo-Riemannian conformal manifolds. We show that such local diffeomorphisms are conformal local diffeomorphisms. Our result extends the result of Yano and Tomonaga. We also present a holographic interpretation for our result on Poincaré-Einstein manifolds. The proofs take suitable variations of conformal circles.

Conformal dynamics at infinity for groups with contracting elements

Abstract:This paper develops a theory of conformal density at infinity for groups with contracting elements. We start by introducing a class of convergence boundary encompassing many known hyperbolic-like boundaries, on which a detailed study of conical points and Myrberg points is carried out. The basic theory of conformal density is then established, including the Sullivan shadow lemma and Hopf-Tsuji-Sullivan theorem. This gives a unification of the theory of conformal density on the Gromov and Floyd boundary for (relatively) hyperbolic groups, the visual boundary for rank-1 CAT(0) groups, and Thurston boundary for mapping class groups. Besides that, the conformal density on the horofunction boundary provides a new important example of our general theory. At last, we present applications towards the co-growth problem of divergent groups, measure theoretical results for CAT(0) groups and mapping class groups.

Concyclic Centroids and the Anti-Fuhrmann Triangle

Abstract:In this article we present a remarkable concyclicity of four centroids related to the orthocenters of the triangles $ABC,$ $BPC,$ $CPA,$ and $PAB$ of a quadrangle $ABCP$. Furthermore, we establish a result about orthologic triangles inscribed in a rectangular hyperbola. We present an application of the concyclic centroids theorem when $P$ corresponds to the incenter $I$ of $ABC$. This specialization leads to the discovery of a novel triangle intimately connected to the Fuhrmann triangle.

Conformally symmetric triangular lattices and discrete $\vartheta$-conformal maps

Abstract:Two immersed triangulations in the plane with the same combinatorics are considered as preimage and image of a discrete immersion $F$. We compare the cross-ratios $Q$ and $q$ of corresponding pairs of adjacent triangles in the two triangulations. If for every pair the arguments of these cross-ratios (i.e. intersection angles of circumcircles) agree, $F$ is a discrete conformal map based on circle patterns. Similarly, if for every pair the absolute values of the corresponding cross-ratios $Q$ and $q$ (i.e. length cross-ratios) agree, the two triangulations are discrete conformally equivalent. We introduce a new notion, discrete $\vartheta$-conformal maps, which interpolates between these two known definitions of discrete conformality for planar triangulations. We prove that there exists an associated variational principle. In particular, discrete $\vartheta$-conformal maps are unique minimizers of a locally defined convex functional ${\cal F}_\vartheta$ in suitable variables. Furthermore, we study conformally symmetric triangular lattices which contain examples of discrete $\vartheta$-conformal maps.

Conformal Tilings, Combinatorial Curvature, and the Type Problem

Abstract:Roughly, a conformal tiling of a Riemann surface is a tiling where each tile is a suitable conformal image of a Euclidean regular polygon. In 1997, Bowers and Stephenson constructed an edge-to-edge conformal tiling of the complex plane using conformally regular pentagons. In contrast, we show that for all $n \geq 7$, there is no edge-to-edge conformal tiling of the complex plane using conformally regular $n$-gons. More generally, we discuss a relationship between the combinatorial curvature at each vertex of the conformal tiling and the universal cover (sphere, plane, or disc) of the underlying Riemann surface. This result follows from the work of Stone (1976) and Oh (2005) through a rich interplay between Riemannian geometry and combinatorial geometry. We provide an exposition of these proofs and some new applications to conformal tilings.

Limits of Convex Projective Surfaces and Finsler Metrics

Abstract:We show that for certain sequences escaping to infinity in the $\operatorname{SL}_3\mathbb{R}$ Hitchin component, growth rates of trace functions are described by natural Finsler metrics. More specifically, as the Labourie-Loftin cubic differential gets big, logarithms of trace functions are approximated by lengths in a Finsler metric which has triangular unit balls and is defined directly in terms of the cubic differential. This is equivalent to a conjecture of Loftin from 2006 which has recently been proven by Loftin, Tamburelli, and Wolf, though phrasing the result in terms of Finsler metrics is new and leads to stronger results with simpler proofs. From our perspective, the result is a corollary of a more local theorem which may have other applications. The key ingredient of the proof is another asymmetric Finsler metric, defined on any convex projective surface, recently defined by Danciger and Stecker, in which lengths of loops are logarithms of eigenvalues. We imitate work of Nie to show that, as the cubic differential gets big, Danciger and Stecker's metric converges to our Finsler metric with triangular unit balls. While Loftin, Tamburelli, and Wolf address cubic differential rays, our methods also address sequences of representations which are asymptotic to cubic differential rays, giving us more insight into natural compactifications of the moduli space of convex projective surfaces.

Abstract:According to the uniformization theorem, any surface can be conformally mapped into a domain of a constant Gaussian curvature. The conformal factor indicates the local scaling introduced by such a mapping. This process could be used to compute geometric quantities in a simplified flat domain with zero Gaussian curvature. For example, the computation of geodesic distances on a curved surface can be mapped into solving an eikonal equation in a plane weighted by the conformal factor. Solving an eikonal equation on the weighted plane can then be done by regular sampling of the domain using, for example, the celebrated fast marching method (FMM). The connection between the conformal factor on the plane and the surface geometry can be justified analytically. Still, in order to construct consistent numerical solvers that exploit this relation, one needs to prove that the conformal factor is bounded. We provide theoretical bounds of the conformal factor and introduce optimization formulations that control its behavior. It is demonstrated that without such restrictions the numerical results are unboundedly inaccurate. Putting all ingredients in the right order, we introduce a method for computing geodesic distances on a two-dimensional manifold by using the FMM on a weighted flat domain. It is also shown how a metric on a curved domain can be reconstructed by reformulating the nonflat metric restoration problem into a weighted flat domain, again, with bounded weights for consistent results.

A Compact Form of 3D Conformal Block

Abstract:We reveal an intriguing connection between conformal blocks and fractional calculus. By employing a modified form of half-derivates, we discover a compact representation of the three-dimensional conformal block, expressed as the product of two hypergeometric 4F3 functions. Furthermore, our method leads to several implications for two-dimensional Conformal Field Theory (CFT), which we explore towards the conclusion of this paper.

Abstract:We identify the cone of smooth metrics $\mc{M}(M)$ on a manifold $M^n$ with the space of smooth isometric embeddings $f_g: (M,g) \rightarrow (\mb{S}^{\tn},\tg)$ into a standard sphere of large dimension $\tn=\tn(n)$, and their isotopic deformations, and the space $\mc{C}(M)$ of conformal classes with the embeddings of metrics in the same conformal class, isotopic to each other by conformal deformations. Uniform limits of $C^1$ isometric embeddings of a metric, or isometric embeddings of metrics on $M$ with a different smooth structure, and their deformations, are carried by $(\mb{S}^{\tn},\tg)$ also, but when the latter exist, they do not embed into a smooth flow of any $f_g(M)\hookrightarrow \mb{S}^{\tn}$. We characterize the metrics of constant scalar curvature by properties of their isometric embeddings, and use it to prove a homotopy lifting property of the bundle $\mc{M}(M) \stackrel{\pi}{\rightarrow } \mc{C}(M)$ by Yamabe metrics. When $M$ carries an almost complex structure $J_0$, this result extends to a homotopy lifting property of the bundle $\mc{M}^{J_0}(M) \stackrel{\pi}{\rightarrow } \mc{C}^{J_0}(M)$ of metrics, compatible with some $J$ in the same orientation class as $J_0$, and their classes, the lift now by almost Hermitian Yamabe metrics. We use these results and the gap theorem of Simons to study the existence and integrability properties of almost complex structures on spheres, and products. We find the sigma invariants of $Sp(2)$ and the $M^7_k$ spheres of Milnor, and with one exception, the almost Hermitian sigma invariant of any product of spheres with almost complex structures. We organize all manifolds with Yamabe, or almost Hermitian Yamabe metrics on them, in a Pascal like triangle, set according to their dimensions and symmetries, and the values of their associated conformal invariants.

Abstract:The paper proves a result on the convergence of discrete conformal maps to the Riemann mappings for Jordan domains. It is a counterpart of Rodin-Sullivan's theorem on convergence of circle packing mappings to the Riemann mapping in the new setting of discrete conformality. The proof follows the same strategy that Rodin-Sullivan used by establishing a rigidity result for regular hexagonal triangulations of the plane and estimating the quasiconformal constants associated to the discrete conformal maps.
Conforming Finite Element Function Spaces in Four Dimensions, Part 1: Foundational Principles and the Tesseract

Abstract:The stability, robustness, accuracy, and efficiency of space-time finite element methods crucially depend on the choice of approximation spaces for test and trial functions. This is especially true for high-order, mixed finite element methods which often must satisfy an inf-sup condition in order to ensure stability. With this in mind, the primary objective of this paper and a companion paper is to provide a wide range of explicitly stated, conforming, finite element spaces in four-dimensions. In this paper, we construct explicit high-order conforming finite elements on 4-cubes (tesseracts); our construction uses tools from the recently developed `Finite Element Exterior Calculus'. With a focus on practical implementation, we provide details including Piola-type transformations, and explicit expressions for the volumetric, facet, face, edge, and vertex degrees of freedom. In addition, we establish important theoretical properties, such as the exactness of the finite element sequences, and the unisolvence of the degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Let $\Omega$ be a smooth, bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^3$ diffeomorphic to a ball. Consider $M = \mathbb{R}^3 \setminus \Omega$ equipped with an asymptotically flat metric $g = f^4 g_{\text{euc}}$, where $f\to 1$ at infinity. Assume that $g$ has non-negative scalar curvature and that $\Sigma = \partial M$ is a minimal 2-sphere in the $g$ metric. We prove a sharp inequality relating the ADM mass of $M$ with the conformal capacity of $\Omega$. As a corollary, we deduce a sharp lower bound for the ADM mass of $M$ in terms of the Euclidean volume of $\Omega$. We also prove a stability type result for this ``volumetric Penrose inequality.'' The proofs are based on a monotonicity formula holding along the level sets of a 3-harmonic function.

Abstract:Consider discrete conformal maps defined on the basis of two conformally equivalent triangle meshes, that is edge lengths are related by scale factors associated to the vertices. Given a smooth conformal map $f$, we show that it can be approximated by such discrete conformal maps $f^\epsilon$. In particular, let $T$ be an infinite regular triangulation of the plane with congruent triangles and only acute angles (i.e.\ $<\pi/2$). We scale this tiling by $\epsilon>0$ and approximate a compact subset of the domain of $f$ with a portion of it. For $\epsilon$ small enough we prove that there exists a conformally equivalent triangle mesh whose scale factors are given by $\log|f'|$ on the boundary. Furthermore we show that the corresponding discrete conformal maps $f^\epsilon$ converge to $f$ uniformly in $C^1$ with error of order $\epsilon$.

Abstract:Two triangle meshes are conformally equivalent if for any pair of incident triangles the absolute values of the corresponding cross-ratios of the four vertices agree. Such a pair can be considered as preimage and image of a discrete conformal map. In this article we study discrete conformal maps which are defined on parts of a triangular lattice $T$ with strictly acute angles. That is, $T$ is an infinite triangulation of the plane with congruent strictly acute triangles. A smooth conformal map $f$ can be approximated on a compact subset by such discrete conformal maps $f^\varepsilon$, defined on a part of $\varepsilon T$ for $\varepsilon>0$ small enough, see [U. B\"ucking, Approximation of conformal mappings using conformally equivalent triangular lattices, in "Advances in Discrete Differential Geometry" (A.I. Bobenko ed.), Springer (2016), 133--149]. We improve this result and show that the convergence is in fact in $C^\infty$. Furthermore, we describe how the cross-ratios of the four vertices for pairs of incident triangles are related to the Schwarzian derivative of $f$.
Celestial conformal blocks of massless scalars and analytic continuation of the Appell function F1

Abstract:In celestial conformal field theory (CCFT), the 4d massless scalars are represented by 2d conformal operators with conformal dimensions h = = (1 + iλ )/2. The Mellin transform of 4d massless scalar amplitudes gives the conformal correlators of CCFT. We study the conformal block decomposition of these celestial correlators in CCFT and obtain the explicit blocks. This conformal block decomposition is highly nontrivial, even for the simplest 4d massless scalar amplitude. We use the analytic continuation of the Appell hypergeometric function F 1 and the method of monodromy projection of conformal blocks, to achieve this block decomposition. This procedure is consistent with the crossing symmetry, in both the correlator-level and each explicit block-level. We also investigate its behavior in the conformal soft limit and find that the Appell hypergeometric function F 1 does not reduce to the Gauss hypergeometric function. This is different from the block decomposition of celestial gluons we studied before, where the Appell hypergeometric function F 1 reduces to the Gauss hypergeometric function. This difference comes from the shift of conformal dimensions and is the reason why we adopt the new method here for the block decomposition of celestial massless scalars.

Constrained maximization of conformal capacity

Abstract:We consider constellations of disks which are unions of disjoint hyperbolic disks in the unit disk with fixed radii and unfixed centers. We study the problem of maximizing the conformal capacity of a constellation under constraints on the centers in two cases. In the first case the constraint is that the centers are at most at distance $R \in(0,1)$ from the origin and in the second case it is required that the centers are on the subsegment $[-R,R]$ of a diameter of the unit disk. We study also similar types of constellations with hyperbolic segments instead of the hyperbolic disks. Our computational experiments suggest that a dispersion phenomenon occurs: the disks/segments go as close to the unit circle as possible under these constraints and stay as far as possible from each other. The computation of capacity reduces to the Dirichlet problem for the Laplace equation which we solve with a fast boundary integral equation method. The results are double-checked with the $hp$-FEM method.

Abstract:New algorithms are presented for numerical conformal mapping based on rational approximations and the solution of Dirichlet problems by least-squares fitting on the boundary. The methods are targeted at regions with corners, where the Dirichlet problem is solved by the "lightning Laplace solver" with poles exponentially clustered near each singularity. For polygons and circular polygons, further simplifications are possible.
