Abstract:A moving medium drags light along with it as measured by Fizeau and explained by Einstein's theory of special relativity. Here we show that the same effect can be obtained in a situation where there is no physical motion of the medium. Modulations of both the permittivity and permeability, phased in space and time in the form of travelling waves, are the basis of our model. Space-time metamaterials are represented by effective bianisotropic parameters, which can in turn be mapped to a moving homogeneous medium. Hence these metamaterials mimic a relativistic effect without the need for any actual material motion. We discuss how both the permittivity and permeability need to be modulated in order to achieve these effects, and we present an equivalent transmission line model.

Dispersion can enhance such light drag according to Lorentz's predication. Here fast- and slow-light-enhanced light drag is demonstrated experimentally in a moving optical microcavity through stimulated Brillouin scattering induced transparency and absorption. The strong dispersion provides an enhancement factor up to similar to 10(4), greatly reducing the system size down to the micrometer range. These results may offer a unique platform for a compact, integrated solution to motion sensing and ultrafast signal processing applications.

Abstract:Fizeau drag means that the speed of light can be regulated by the flow of water, owing to the momentum interaction between photons and moving media. However, the dragging of heat is intrinsically elusive, due to the absence of momentum in thermal diffusion. Here, we design a spatiotemporal thermal metamaterial based on heat transfer in porous media to demonstrate the diffusive analog to Fizeau drag. The space-related inhomogeneity and time-related advection enable the diffusive Fizeau drag effect. Thanks to the spatiotemporal coupling, different propagating speeds of temperature fields can be observed in two opposite directions, thus facilitating nonreciprocal thermal profiles. The phenomenon of diffusive Fizeau drag stands robustly even when the direction of advection is perpendicular to the propagation of temperature fields. These results could pave an unexpected way toward realizing the nonreciprocal and directional transport of mass and energy.

Abstract:We introduce a method to realize superluminal phase velocity of electromagnetic wave which can be five thousand times larger than c (c is the speed of light in vacuum) in dispersive uniaxial media. Theoretical analysis on dispersion relation for plasma media reveals that the phase velocity is much larger than C when the refractive index is smaller than that in vacuum at special frequency. Based on the theory, we designed a metamaterial construction which is dispersive uniaxial and exhibiting Drude-model-like frequency dependence to realize the superluminal phase velocity. We also verified it through the experiment.

Abstract:Propagation, transmission and reflection properties of linearly polarized plane waves and arbitrarily short electromagnetic pulses in one-dimensional dispersionless dielectric media possessing an arbitrary space-time dependence of the refractive index are studied by using a two-component, highly symmetric version of Maxwell's equations. The use of any slow varying amplitude approximation is avoided. Transfer matrices of sharp nonstationary interfaces are calculated explicitly, together with the amplitudes of all secondary waves produced in the scattering. Time-varying multilayer structures and spatiotemporal lenses in various configurations are investigated analytically and numerically in a unified approach. Several new effects are reported, such as pulse compression, broadening and spectral manipulation of pulses by a spatiotemporal lens, and the closure of the forbidden frequency gaps with the subsequent opening of wavenumber bandgaps in a generalized Bragg reflector.

Abstract:The change in direction of the wavevector and group velocity experienced by a wave refracted at the interface of an anisotropic medium in uniform linear motion are determined analytically. These transmission conditions, which are shown to be consistent with generalized Snell's law written in the laboratory frame, are then used to examine the effect of motion on waves incident on a magnetized plasma. For an incident wave in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field the motion is observed to lead to non negligible deviation of the low-frequency X-mode, as well as to non-symmetrical total reflection angles. These effects are shown to be further complicated when the magnetic field is in the plane formed by the incident wavevector and the medium's velocity, as the anisotropy now competes with the motion-induced drag. Although obtained in simplified configurations, these results suggest that accounting for motion when modeling plasma waves trajectory could be important under certain conditions, calling for a more detailed quantification of the effect of motion in actual diagnostics and plasma control schemes.

Abstract:The interaction of light with superluminally moving matter entails unconventional phenomena, from Fresnel drag to Hawking radiation and to light amplification. While relativity makes these effects inaccessible using objects in motion, synthetic motion - enabled via space-time modulated internal degrees of freedom - is free from these constraints. Here we observe synthetic velocity of a reflectivity modulation travelling on an Indium-Tin-Oxide (ITO) interface, generated by ultrafast laser illumination at multiple positions and times. The interaction of the moving reflectivity modulation with a probe light beam acts as a non-separable spatio-temporal transformation that diffracts the light, changing its frequency and momentum content. The recorded frequency-momentum diffraction pattern is defined by the velocity of the diffracted probe wave relative to the modulation. Our experiments open a path towards mimicking relativistic mechanics and developing programmable spatio-temporal transformations of light.

Abstract:An optical field will undergo coherent diffusion when it is mapped into thermal-motioned atoms, e.g., in a slow or storage light process. As has been demonstrated before, such a diffusion effect is equivalent to a spatial low-pass filter attenuating the high-spatial-frequency (SF) components of the optical field. Here, employing electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-based light storage in hot atomic vapor, we demonstrate that the angular deviation between the control and the probe beams could be utilized as a degree of freedom to modulate the SF of the probe beam. The principle is to change the diffusion-induced low-pass filter into a bandpass filter, whose SF response can be tuned by varying the direction and magnitude of the angular deviation. Transverse multimode light fields, such as optical images and Laguerre-Gaussian modes, are utilized to study such SF modulation. Our findings could be broadly applied to the fields of quantum information processing, all-optical image manipulation, and imaging through diffusive media.
Observation of discrete-light temporal refraction by moving potentials with broken Galilean invariance

Abstract:Refraction is a basic beam bending effect at two media's interface. While traditional studies focus on stationary boundaries, moving boundaries or potentials could enable new laws of refractions. Meanwhile, media's discretization plays a pivotal role in refraction owing to Galilean invariance breaking principle in discrete-wave mechanics, making refraction highly moving-speed dependent. Here, by harnessing a synthetic temporal lattice in a fiber-loop circuit, we observe discrete time refraction by a moving gauge-potential barrier. We unveil the selection rules for the potential moving speed, which can only take an integer v = 1 or fractional v = 1/q (odd q) value to guarantee a well-defined refraction. We observe reflectionless/reflective refractions for v = 1 and v = 1/3 speeds, transparent potentials with vanishing refraction/reflection, refraction of dynamic moving potential and refraction for relativistic Zitterbewegung effect. Our findings may feature applications in versatile time control and measurement for optical communications and signal processing.

Abstract:In Physics, causality is a fundamental postulation arising from the second law of thermodynamics. It states that, the cause of an event precedes its effect. In the context of Electromagnetics, the relativistic causality limits the upper bound of the velocity of information, which is carried by electromagnetic wave packets, to the speed of light in free space (c). In anomalously dispersive media (ADM), it has been shown that, wave packets appear to propagate with a superluminal or even negative group velocity. However, Sommerfeld and Brillouin pointed out that the "front" of such wave packets, known as the initial point of the Sommerfeld precursor, always travels at c. In this work, we investigate the negative-group-velocity transmission of half-sine wave packets. We experimentally observe the wave front and the distortion of modulated wave packets propagating with a negative group velocity in a passive artificial ADM in microwave regime. Different from previous literature on the propagation of superluminal Gaussian packets, strongly distorted sinusoidal packets with non-superluminal wave fronts were observed. This result agrees with Brillouin's assertion, i.e., the severe distortion of seemingly superluminal wave packets makes the definition of group velocity physically meaningless in the anomalously dispersive region.

Abstract:We explore the propagation and transformation of electromagnetic waves through spatially homogeneous yet smoothly time-dependent media within the framework of classical electrodynamics. By modelling the smooth transition, occurring during a finite period τ, as a phenomenologically realistic and sigmoidal change of the dielectric permittivity, an analytically exact solution to Maxwell׳s equations is derived for the electric displacement in terms of hypergeometric functions. Using this solution, we show the possibility of amplification and attenuation of waves and associate this with the decrease and increase of the time-dependent permittivity. We demonstrate, moreover, that such an energy exchange between waves and non-stationary media leads to the transformation (or conversion) of frequencies. Our results may pave the way towards controllable light–matter interaction in time-varying structures.

Abstract:We contrast the two situations in which either a light beam is incident on a moving medium or a moving optical image is incident on a stationary medium. The principle of relativity suggests that the effects on the light of propagating through the medium should be similar. We find, however, that there are subtle differences which we can understand in terms of the relative alignment of the Poynting and wave vectors. Our analysis and experiments investigate both translational motion and rotation.

Abstract:A negative refractive index medium, in which all spatial coordinates are reversed (i.e. a left-hand triplet is formed) by a spatial folding transformation, can create many novel electromagnetic phenomena, e.g. backward wave propagation, and inversed Doppler effect (IDE). In this study, we use coordinate rotation transformation to reverse only two spatial coordinates (e.g. x' and y'), while keeping z' unchanged. In this case, some novel phenomena, e.g. radiation-direction-reversing illusions and IDE, can be achieved in a free space region wrapped by the proposed shell without any negative refractive index medium, which is easier for experimental realization and future applications.

Abstract:Recently, a considerable enhancement has been observed in the celebrated Fresnel–Fizeau light drag by innovative experimental and theoretical approaches because of its fundamental and practical interest in the emerging technology of quantum optics and photonics. We present a semiclassical density matrix approach on the demonstration of light drag in a slow-light moving medium comprising five-level single tripod atomic configuration. To accomplish this, we introduce Kerr-type nonlinearity that leads to electromagnetically-induced transparency amplification under resonance conditions. By switching ON Kerr-type nonlinearity effect, we observe a prominent transparency window in probe field's absorption spectrum whose width and amplitude can be controlled further by the intensity of Kerr field and control field. The incorporation of Kerr field also switches light propagation from superluminal to subluminal domain. We predict a significant enhancement both in the lateral and the rotary photon drag owing to drag of light linear polarization state subjected to translation and rotation of the host medium, respectively. Consistent with earlier results, light drag considerably depends on both transverse and angular velocity of the host medium. In regime of subluminal propagation, light polarization state drags along the medium motion while in the superluminal propagation region it drags opposite to the medium motion.

Abstract:The ability to steer and focus light inside scattering media has long been sought for a multitude of applications. To form optical foci inside scattering media, the only feasible strategy at present is to guide photons by using either implanted1 or virtual2-4 guide stars, which can be inconvenient and limits potential applications. Here, we report a scheme for focusing light inside scattering media by employing intrinsic dynamics as guide stars. By time-reversing the perturbed component of the scattered light adaptively, we show that it is possible to focus light to the origin of the perturbation. Using the approach, we demonstrate non-invasive dynamic light focusing onto moving targets and imaging of a time-variant object obscured by highly scattering media. Anticipated applications include imaging and photoablation of angiogenic vessels in tumours as well as other biomedical uses.

Abstract:The effect of a finite control beam on the transverse spatial profile of the slow light propagation in an electromagnetically induced transparency medium is studied. We arrive at a general criterion in terms of eigenequation, and demonstrate the existence of a set of localized, stationary transverse modes for the negative detuning of the probe signal field. Each of these diffraction-free transverse modes has its own characteristic group velocity, smaller than the conventional theoretical result without considering the transverse spatial effect.
Transient States to Control the Electromagnetic Response of Space-time Dispersive Media

Abstract:In this paper, we study the dynamic formation of transients when plane waves impinge on a dispersive slab that abruptly changes its electrical properties in time. The time-varying slab alternates between air and metal-like states, whose frequency dispersion is described by the Drude model. It is shown how the physics of this complex system can be well described with the joint combination of two terms: one associated with temporal refractions and the other associated with spatial refractions. To test the validity of the approach, some analytical results are compared with a self-implemented finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Results show how the transients that occurred after the abrupt temporal changes can shape the overall steady-state response of the space-time system. In fact, far from always being detrimental, these transient states can be conveniently used to perform frequency conversion or to amplify/attenuate the electromagnetic fields.

Abstract:We propose an effective method to achieve extremely slow light by using both the mechanism of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and the localization of a coupled cavity waveguide (CCW). Based on quantum mechanics theory and the dispersion relation of a CCW, we derive a group-velocity formula that reveals both the effects of the EIT and CCW. Results show that ultralow light velocity at the order of several meters per second or even static light, could be obtained feasibly. In comparison with the EIT mechanism in a background of vacuum, this proposed method is more effective and realistic to achieve extremely slow light. And it exhibits potential values in the field of light storage.
