Abstract:Abstract Integration of production and distribution operations at the scheduling level is one of the most important issues concerned in recent years in supply chain management. We investigate the scheduling problem with job delivery coordination. Concretely, we are given a set of jobs with non-identical processing times and non-identical sizes to be first processed by two parallel-identical machines and then delivered to a common customer by a single vehicle, which has a limited capacity that can carry up to a fixed total size of jobs in one batch. The objective is to minimize the makespan, ie, the time when all the jobs have reached the customer and the delivery vehicle has returned to the machine. The problem does not admit a polynomial time approximation algorithm with worst-case ratio smaller than unless P = NP. By introducing some novel ideas and new methods, including algorithms solving multiple knapsack problem as subprocedures and the rediscovery of the profound nature of the bin-packing algorithm, we propose a polynomial time approximation algorithm with worst-case ratio arbitrary close to . The algorithm, acquired after long-term research containing many earlier related works, is the first algorithm for this kind of problems and its theoretical performance is nearly best.

Abstract:Management of disk scheduling is a very important aspect of operating system. Performance of the disk scheduling completely depends on how efficient is the scheduling algorithm to allocate services to the request in a better manner. Many algorithms (FIFO, SSTF, SCAN, C-SCAN, LOOK, etc.) are developed in the recent years in order to optimize the system disk I/O performance. By reducing the average seek time and transfer time, we can improve the performance of disk I/O operation. In our proposed algorithm, Optimize Disk Scheduling Algorithm (ODSA) is taking less average seek time and transfer time as compare to other disk scheduling algorithms (FIFO, SSTF, SCAN, C-SCAN, LOOK, etc.), which enhances the efficiency of the disk performance in a better manner.

Abstract:To gain higher performance under many constraints, effective scheduling is a key concern in data-intensive grid computing. Based on a Dual-Component and Dual-Queue Distributed Schedule Model (DCDQDSM), we present task and data co-scheduling algorithms, by which the waiting time to access datasets for the scheduled task will reduce. Firstly data replication and elimination schedule are processed by an independent approach. Secondly, if a task is divisible, the task and its dataset are divided into subtasks and their necessary data subsets. Task scheduling adopts a general approach. Finally, when a scheduled task/subtask doesn't hit its dataset, associated data transferring is bound to this task. On the basis of relation between task execution and data access, data replication and computing may proceed concurrently in one scheduled task with divisible dataset or between scheduled tasks. Corresponding theoretic analysis and experimental results suggest that the scheduling algorithms improve execution performance and resource utilization.

Abstract:Audio, animations and video belong to a class of data known as delay sensitive because they are sensitive to delays in presentation to the users. Also, because of huge data in such items, disk is an important device in managing them. In order to have an acceptable presentation, disk requests deadlines must be met, and a real-time scheduling approach should be used to guarantee the timing requirements for such environment. However, some disk scheduling algorithms have been proposed since now to optimize scheduling real-time disk requests, but improving the results is a challenge yet. In this paper, we propose a new disk scheduling method based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) approach. In this approach, ACO models the tasks and finds the best sequence to minimize number of missed tasks and maximize throughput. Experimental results showed that the proposed method worked very well and excelled other related ones in terms of miss ratio and throughput in most cases.

Abstract:An operating system is software that is designed to manage computer hardware and software resources. However, this management requires applying an ample number of techniques and algorithms which are called synchronization and scheduling. The scheduling algorithms are used to arrange the way that the CPU is assigned to the processes, while synchronization is utilized to indicate how to work with multi-processes at the same time. Therefore, they are related to each other. CPU scheduling is a vital phenomenon of an operating system. At present, numerous CPU scheduling algorithms exist as First Come First Serve) FCFS(, Shortest Job First (SJF), Shortest Remaining Time First (SRTF), Priority Scheduling, and Round Robin (RR). In this paper, a survey of the current synchronization and scheduling algorithms have been presented. An overview of each technique with the main algorithms have been described in detail with the advantages and the issues of each algorithm. Furthermore, this paper has dug deep into the real-time operating system scheduling issues, which is the current trend in operating system researches.

Abstract:Developing CPU scheduling algorithms and understanding their impact in practice can be difficult and time consuming due to the need to modify and test operating system kernel code and measure the resulting performance on a consistent workload of real applications. As processor is the important resource, CPU scheduling becomes very important in accomplishing the operating system (OS) design goals. The intention should be allowed as many as possible running processes at all time in order to make best use of CPU. This paper presents a state diagram that depicts the comparative study of various scheduling algorithms for a single CPU and shows which algorithm is best for the particular situation. Using this representation, it becomes much easier to understand what is going on inside the system and why a different set of processes is a candidate for the allocation of the CPU at different time. The objective of the study is to analyze the high efficient CPU scheduler on design of the high quality scheduling algorithms which suits the scheduling goals. Abstract:As cloud services expand, the need to improve the performance of data center infrastructure becomes more important. High-performance computing, advanced networking solutions, and resource optimization strategies can help data centers maintain the speed and efficiency necessary to provide high-quality cloud services. Running containerized applications is one such optimization strategy, offering benefits such as improved portability, enhanced security, better resource utilization, faster deployment and scaling, and improved integration and interoperability. These benefits can help organizations improve their application deployment and management, enabling them to respond more quickly and effectively to dynamic business needs. Kubernetes is a container orchestration system designed to automate the deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. One of its key features is the ability to schedule the deployment and execution of containers across a cluster of nodes using a scheduling algorithm. This algorithm determines the best placement of containers on the available nodes in the cluster. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of various scheduling algorithms in the context of Kubernetes. We characterize and group them into four sub-categories: generic scheduling, multi-objective optimization-based scheduling, AI-focused scheduling, and autoscaling enabled scheduling, and identify gaps and issues that require further research.

Abstract:Since the publication of the first scheduling paper in 1954, a huge number of works dealing with different types of single machine problems appeared. They addressed many heuristics and enumerative procedures, complexity results or structural properties of certain problems. Regarding surveys, often particular subjects like special objective functions are discussed, or more general scheduling problems were surveyed, where a substantial part is devoted to single machine problems. In this paper we present some results on polynomial algorithms, complexity and approximation issues, where the main focus is on results, which have been published during the last decades in papers, where at least one of the first two authors of this paper was involved. We hope that the reviewed results will stimulate further investigation in related research fields.

Abstract:Undoubtedly, the MapReduce is the most powerful programming paradigm in distributed computing. The enhancement of the MapReduce is essential and it can lead the computing faster. Therefore, here are many scheduling algorithms to discuss based on their characteristics. Moreover, there are many shortcoming to discover in this field. In this article, we present the state-of-the-art scheduling algorithm to enhance the understanding of the algorithms. The algorithms are presented systematically such that there can be many future possibilities in scheduling algorithm through this article. In this paper, we provide in-depth insight on the MapReduce scheduling algorithm. Abstract:Power and heat have become two of the major concerns for the computer industry, which struggles to cope with the energy and cooling costs for servers, as well as the short battery life of portable devices. Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) has emerged as a useful technique: e.g. Intel's newest Foxton technology enables a chip to run at 64 different speed levels. Equipped with DVS technology, the operating system can then save CPU's energy consumption by scheduling tasks wisely. A schedule that finishes the given tasks within their timing constraints while using minimum total energy (among all feasible schedules) is called an optimal DVS schedule. A theoretical model for DVS scheduling was proposed in a paper by Yao, Demers and Shenker in 1995, along with a well-formed characterization of the optimum and an algorithm for computing it. This algorithm has remained as the most efficient known despite many investigations of this model. In this talk, we will first give an overview of the DVS scheduling problem, and then present the latest improved results for computing the optimal schedule in both the finite and the continuous (infinite speed levels) models. Related results on efficient on-line scheduling heuristics will also be discussed.

Abstract:Efficient application scheduling is critical for achieving high performance in homogeneous computing environment. The application scheduling problem has been shown to be NP-complete. However, because of its key importance, this problem has been extensively studied and various algorithms have been proposed in the literatures. In this paper we present a novel algorithm based on list-scheduling and task-duplication on a bounded number of fully connected homogeneous machines. The algorithm is called fast duplication based on earliest finish time (FDEFT). In order to provide a robust and unbiased comparison with the related work, a parametric graph generator was designed to generate weighted directed acyclic graphs with various characteristics. The comparison study, based on both randomly generated graphs and the graphs of Gaussian elimination, shows that our scheduling algorithm significantly outperform on average all other excellent algorithms

Abstract:One of the fundamental problems in parallel and distributed systems is deciding how to allocate jobs toprocessors. The goals of job scheduling in a parallel environment are to minimize the parallel execution time of ajob and try to balance the user's desire with the system's desire. The users always want their jobs be completed asquickly as possible, while the system wants to service as many jobs as possible. In this paper, a dynamic job-scheduling algorithm was introduced. This algorithm tries to utilize the information of a practical system to allo-cate the jobs more evenly. The communication time between the processor and scheduler is overlapped with thecomputation time of the processor. So the communication overhead can be little. The principle of scheduling thejob is based on the desirability of each processor. The scheduler would not allocate a new job to a processor that isalready fully utilized. The execution efficiency of the system will be increased. This algorithm also can be reused inother complex algorithms.

Abstract:A Dynamic parallel machine Scheduling Algorithm based on the pattern of operation attributes for scheduling problems with the Constraint of fittings number(DSAC) was proposed for dynamic parallel machine scheduling problem in the uncertain manufacturing environment.The algorithm could readjust the starting time of operations and the sequence of adjacent operations according to the operation-attributespattern to optimize the total tardiness performance.Computational experiments under different scales of operations and equipments as well as different alternations of fittings number were carried out.Results showed that the algorithm was effective,and it had characteristics of low computation complexity,excellent real-time ability,and insensitiveness to the original scheduling method.
